Can someone briefly explain why Italy just went off the cliff?

Post WWII Italy has been a long-running disaster as far as governments. Turning them over quite quickly, the fundamental problem no doubt lies deep in history.

Indeed, I think it is the longevity of the history of the Italian peninsula that is part of the problem.

Things haven’t been right since the Etruscans were taken over by the Romans.
