In college I had a friend who invited me to go with him and some others to his parents place during spring break. Now I wish I had gone, but at the time I was like “this is the best time of year in Atlanta and I’ll have campus all to myself.”

Sanibel Island was a gorgeous and very expensive place to live. It will cost even more to fix it.

And I have had no problems since I logged on this morning, I-Mac, Safari, AT&T home Wi-Fi broadband.

Crush White Nationalism  Sep 30, 2022 • 11:12:57am
BOSTON — A former eBay Inc. executive was sentenced on Thursday to almost five years in prison for leading a scheme to terrorize the creators of an online newsletter that included sending live spiders, cockroaches, a funeral wreath and other disturbing deliveries to their home.

David Steiner, who along with his wife was the target of the harassment campaign, told the court that eBay former Senior Director of Safety and Security James Baugh and other eBay employees made their lives “a living hell.” He expressed fear that other companies would use it as a blueprint to go after journalists in the future.

“This was a bizarre, premeditated assault on our lives … with buy-in at the highest levels of eBay,” Steiner told the judge.

Another former eBay executive, David Harville, was sentenced later Thursday to two years behind bars for his role in the scheme targeting David and Ina Steiner, the publisher and reporter who angered executives with coverage of the company in their newsletter, eCommerceBytes.

Baugh and Harville, eBay’s onetime director of global resiliency, are among seven former employees who have pleaded guilty to charges in the case.

Court records in the case show how the top eBay executives became enraged by the Steiners’ newsletter and readers who posted comments criticizing the company on their site, which eBay viewed as a threat to its business.

The scheme was hatched in August 2019 after Ina Steiner wrote a story about a lawsuit brought by eBay accusing Amazon of poaching its sellers. A half-hour after the article was published, then-CEO Devin Wenig sent another top eBay executive a message saying: “If you are ever going to take her down … now is the time,” according to court documents. That executive sent Wenig’s message to Baugh and called Ina Steiner a “biased troll who needs to get BURNED DOWN.”

Fun fact: I learned to play that song from Rock Band 3. That was the version that essentially had rolling tablature for the pro guitar track.

Still always amazes me when I play a song I’ve heard on the radio for years/decades. There’s this weird disconnect between hearing the notes, watching my fingers make them, and realizing I’m the one actually doing it. “Dreamlike” is too strong a phrase, but it’s like “How the eff is this happening?”

PHP 8 is getting on my last nerve with all these “undefined array key” and “undefined variable” warnings.

I liked the way PHP was lenient about referencing undefined variables and array keys, goddammit. It was a feature, not a bug. Fixing all the warnings means a lot of extra code to check if the variable is set before referencing it.

I think I mentioned this earlier, but most modern languages are going the opposite direction: Eliminating the need for those checks by using nullable types. Basically, I can assert that something isn’t null in a place, or tell the compiler, “If this thing is null, just treat the result of this expression as null,” without explicitly checking if the thing itself is null or not.

They suddenly decided to change the way their embedded timelines work, so that’s why you aren’t seeing the one that normally appears at the bottom of the right sidebar.

They’re calling this an improvement, but they REMOVED the live updating feature, which was the main reason I liked to use it.

Before I retired, I had 43 years of programming experience under my belt. I think one of the top 5 things that really pissed me off when trying to fix or upgrade legacy code was that the original programmers or later maintainers left it so that the compiler would generate pages of warnings. Since I didn’t know if they were meaningful, it was necessary to investigate each and every one. I can’t tell how many hours were consumed by this. Had someone taken the time to insure that a clean compile would occur, hundreds of man-hours might have been saved. A compiler generates these warnings for a reason. On all newly developed code, I would insist that the compiler be set to treat warnings as errors thus forcing the developer to fix them before the code could be checked in. I may have received some dirty looks but my legacy is future legacy code that compiles cleanly and makes some poor developer’s life easier sometime down the road.

Right. And with PHP, warnings have a way of becoming fatal errors in later versions.

My skill to the group I work in is that I am a software engineer first. I don’t know nearly as much about the systems our software interacts with as the others, but I like to make sure that code is written correctly, using the best techniques. And one of my things was to make sure warnings were cleared. One warning I chased down in some C++ code ended up being a write to the wrong memory area. I told everyone about it, and someone replied that I had fixed a bug they couldn’t figure out.

They got better about fixing warnings after that.

Deliberate petty cruelty and consciousness of guilt.
Imagine a 24 hour bus ride where adults and children get just two bathroom breaks,
while anonymous drivers and guards try to hide from reporters.

Excerpted from SA Express-News story.

We followed one of Abbott’s migrant buses from Texas to Chicago. Here’s what we learned.

Jerry Lara/San Antonio Express-News
Sam González Kelly, Staff writer

“…They signed waivers agreeing to be transported to Chicago and absolving the state of Texas from liability. Twenty-five minutes later they boarded a bus with a few migrants who had been picked up at the shelter in Del Rio.
They were on their way, with the two of us journalists in a rental car trailing behind.

The journey

Within a few miles of the shelter, the sleek white charter bus had pulled into a Department of Public Safety facility where officials searched riders with a dog, presumably sniffing for drugs. Then it was back on the road and up Interstate 35 another 10 hours toward the southwestern corner of Arkansas.
The bus made a handful of stops in Texas, where drivers and guards disembarked to use the restroom or grab a bite for the road. No such luck for the passengers.

At a gas station near Dallas-Forth Worth, the passengers were told they would be able to get off to use restrooms or get food in another couple of hours, according to a man who was communicating with us via WhatsApp.
The bus pulled off the highway about 1:30 a.m. at the second exit in Arkansas, and lingered in the darkness for nearly an hour, but still the passengers were not allowed off.
Commenting about his hosts, the man on the bus wrote in Spanish, “If you’re going to offer us help, then help us, but please remember that we’re human beings and not animals.”
When asked whether this was common practice for buses heading north, Abbott’s press secretary, Renae Eze, said: “Each bus is stocked with food and water, makes multiple stops along the trip to refuel and switch drivers, and is provided with security to ensure a safe journey for all on board, including the drivers. Migrants are allowed to purchase any needed provisions, use the restroom, or disembark at any of these stops, as they have been processed and released by the federal government.”

The drivers knew journalists were trailing them; one had even driven a loop in front of our car and beeped before merging back onto the highway after refueling. But after finally letting passengers off at a rest stop over 12 hours into the journey, they hustled people back onto the bus after spotting a photographer.

A new driver began taking evasive maneuvers, pulling onto the shoulder of the two-lane highway in near darkness after noticing our car behind them. At this point, we opted to get ahead of the bus and meet the people on it in Chicago. The rest of the journey for those on the bus was, by all accounts, uneventful. Some said they were allowed off one or two more times.”

Dandy photos

I’ve always objected to the term “badlands”. The lands, themselves, aren’t bad, it’s just that those that named them that, lacked the imagination or ability to exploit them. For that, I am extremely grateful. As are all the myriad plants and creatures that have been able to make a home among them. We all need more such “badlands”.

My bad. The exception to Republican approval of rape is if the wife of a rich man is raped by someone other than her husband.

Essentially, conservatives see rape as a property crime, with the only “victim” being the owner of the resulting reduced-value property.

Although conservatives have countless awful views, this may actually be the worst of them all.

If anybody complained when I rejected their code because it compiled with warnings, I would remind them that we are professionals. As a professional, part of our responsibilities is to deliver a product, code, in this case, that meets it specifications, that it has been tested and has been found to function correctly, and that it is written to be maintainable, not just by the coder, but by others. Like professionals in other lines, we should always strive to perform our craft to the highest levels of which we’re capable.

In national news here, a group of Inuit confronted a French Oblate in France, demanding he return to Canada to face charges of running a child sex abuse ring for decades in Nunavut. France refuses to extradite him to Canada despite the outstanding warrants and an extradition treaty between the countries, arguing the Inuit are trying to persecute Christians.

This is all nonsense.

France won’t extradite him because he is French. France like almost all countries doesn’t extradite its own citizens.

Also Canada has never even asked for his extradition. Canada even dropped the charges against him in Canada.

Also Canada has never tried to get him charged in France. Any French citizen who commits a crime overseas can be prosecuted in France.

Details: aptnnews.ca

Edit: add link to Aboriginal Peoples Television Network news story.

(The idea of France, which invented the concept of laïcité in the late 19th/early 20th century to destroy the political power of the Catholic church objecting to an extradition on grounds of “persecution of christians” made me laugh).

Getting a steady rain but thankfully no wind to really speak of. We’ve already had 6.60 inches of rain here at the TarHellion Estates this month, though none to really speak of since Sept. 10. Yes, it poured during storms when we transitioned from summer to fall.

Funny, when MrsTarH and I went to the bank today, one of the employees said, “We need the rain.” Mind you, we are on track for 60-plus inches of rain this year, more than 20 percent above our annual average. Never underestimate the power of recency bias.

Normally Charles would have put in place a very short lived DNS record some time before the switchover.

e.g. if the normal TTL of the record was one week then around two weeks before the change a new record with a TTL or one day would be put in place, then two days before the change a record with a TTL of one hour, then two hours before the change one with a TTL of one minute…

Then the change is made…

re: #134 John Hughes

I can’t say. I only know what I was told. I do know they were also discussing the case today on CBC Radio 1.

Your own article from APTN says that an Interpol arrest warrant was issued by Canada, but was stayed in 2017 due do lack of cooperation of France.

Nations extradite their own citizens to other countries all the time. That is the purpose of extradition treaties.

two of those deaths were in Volusia County.

at 6am yesterday, my sister in Volusia County texted that her power was out and wind gusting more than 50mph

7:40am, water starts coming up in her yard and there’s a leak in the roof. She can still hear power arcing somewhere in the neighborhood

7:52am, she says “getting kinda scary here”

then nothing until almost 10am when she texted that she and her cat bugged out to her neighbor’s house when her roof disappeared.

Right now she’s trying to get things dried out, get the generator going, and get the new roofing up. She’ll spend another night with her neighbor.

OK, finally … I haven’t seen a fatal error in the PHP error log for quite a while, so that’s good, but there are still a shit-ton of warnings about undefined variables, goddammit. Even those are slowing down now.

There are also still some issues that don’t show up in the error log, though, so I still have things on the to-do list.

Those problems. I HATE THOSE PROBLEMS. Inevitably, I wind up having to push up experimental changes just to get some logs around the problem, so that I can even SEE what’s going wrong to fix it. Which, when stuff can only go to production once every two weeks, is a BITCH.

Looking at the drone shots around Naples and Fort Meyers/Port Charlotte. Good fucking grief.

I am very happy all we have to worry about here are flash floods, wild fires, tornadoes, and rattlingsneks.

I’ve heard north of $50 B-b-b-billion in damage in Florida and the Carolinas. And noone is talking yet about how much flooding there will be in the Appalachians this weekend.

Getting Mitch murdered might break Trump’s hold on the party. Might. It might also tighten it, which would have been unimaginable a few years ago.

Opinion Thousands were released from prison during covid. The results are shocking.
washingtonpost.com

To protect those most vulnerable to covid-19 during the pandemic, the Cares Act allowed the Justice Department to order the release of people in federal prisons and place them on home confinement. More than 11,000 people were eventually released. Of those, the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) reported that only 17 of them committed new crimes.

That’s not a typo. Seventeen. That’s a 0.15 percent recidivism rate in a country where it’s normal for 30 to 65 percent of people coming home from prison to reoffend within three years of release.

Of those 17 people, most new offenses were for possessing or selling drugs or other minor offenses. Of the 17 new crimes, only one was violent (an aggravated assault), and none were sex offenses.

Nations extradite their own citizens to other countries all the time. That is the purpose of extradition treaties.

Common law countries may extradite their own citizens.

Civil law countries like France rarely do.

I was wrong about Canada not making a formal extradition request. They did. In August of 2022.

Your own article from APTN says that an Interpol arrest warrant was issued by Canada, but was stayed in 2017 due do lack of cooperation of France.

In an article linked from the article I posted it claims there was an Interpol red notice, but the image in that article is of a Canadian arrest warrant.

No other article on the site claims there was a red notice.

The whole mess seems to be that previous Canadian governments just couldn’t be bothered and Canada is blaming the French for their own lack of action.
