The original opening credits for “Doctor Who” from 1963. At the time, no one had either seen or heard anything like it. The show terrified a whole generation of children, bringing rise in the British lexicon of “hide behind the sofa.”

The song was not created with a theramin or a synthesizer (the latter didn’t exist then) as is commonly thought. It was created by splicing a myriad of audio tape pieces, sped up or slowed down using such things as audio oscillators, along with a string instrument playing a single note (also sped up or slowed down).

The original theme song was released as a 45 rpm record in 1964. The original formulation of the song was used from 1963 to 1980. The BBC did not credit the creator of the music (Delia Derbyshire) for decades. She died in 2001.

The opening video credits were also unlike anything seen in the world at the time. “Doctor Who” is where the idea of travelling faster-than-light looks like travelling through a tube for every science fiction show or movie comes from out of those credits.

Opening credits were also longer back then. (2:36)

Doesn’t Vermont have a state lab which regularly checks water samples?

We don’t have fluoride in our water because we pump it straight from the wells to the water tower, but Nebraska does test for it (we are not required to have it).

A few years ago, I was working as a park attendant for the local county parks. The boss ranger kept tanks full of (mostly harmless) snakes.

One day, I was watering the flora outside his office, and heard him cry, “Oh FECK!”.

I rushed in to see what was happening. One of the harmless sneks had tried to bite him when it was being fed a mouse.

It was fortunate that he had disposed of the rattlesnakes that he used to keep there.

Us park attendants chortled.

So I decided to make one. Please note I have no professional filmmaking experience and this entire video was pretty much a one-person job. Hope you enjoy!

My squirrels drop 10 acorns for every one they eat in the tree. Right now it is raining in the back yard. I swear the squirrels aim for my head when dropping acorns. In my old house they buried walnuts in my yard, lifted the grass, place the nut and carefully lay the lawn back down. In the spring they’d just rip the lawn up, grab their acorn, then leave the flap of lawn up in the air. Fuckers.

The citizens may have good reason for a class action suit for lost benefits.

An economic review of multiple studies found that savings for communities ranged from $1.10 to $135 for every $1 invested. Per capita annual costs for community water fluoridation ranged from $0.11 to $24.38, while per capita annual benefits ranged from $5.49 to $93.19.

It’s early but I’m going to sashay off to bed. I have to get up early to drive the car in for round one of its repairs and pick up our rental car.

The rental car agency in Scottsbluff tried to switch us to an SUV (my wife can’t get in those) by telling us “for a car, all we have is a subcompact. It really doesn’t have a lot of room.” (Also, SUVs are a lot more expensive to rent.)

Since we own a Smart, I really don’t think “subcompact” is a problem here: It is probably bigger than our car.

Saturday evening, accompanied a girl friend, who is an artist, to an art exhibition at Stola Contemporary Art on Irving Park in Chicago. Should be there until about December 4. Very fun exhibit for those who live in the area — and there was a pointed indirect commentary on Dobbs..

I’m going to share this channel with you all. It’s posting very short (1 minute) Japanese anime for “Nights with a Cat.” Turn on the closed captioning for English subtitles. This is an adaptation of a manga with the same name. It’s just cute. The first one explains why there’s now a cat in the household and also recapitulates the “longcat is long” meme. The rest you can watch in any order. There are 18 so far and new ones get posted every week or so.

アニメ『夜は猫といっしょ』 第1夜 「ネコが家に来た日」

The 1 minute anime is followed by a 1 minute, 30 second theme song. No kidding.

Opinion America should spend billions to revive local news
By Perry Bacon Jr.
wapo.st Gift Link

My vision for addressing the huge decline in local journalism involves hiring 87,000 new journalists for about 1,300 news organizations with more than $10 billion in funding. Such a massive investment in local news isn’t going to happen next week and probably not next year, either.

But it is also not a pipe dream. There is a growing recognition that the collapse of local news and information is a crisis undermining the United States’ politics and communities. Ten billion isn’t much money for the United States to spend on something the nation defines as a crisis. Millions of dollars are already being pumped into reviving local journalism, although right now that’s largely limited to a few major cities such as Chicago and Philadelphia.

He has a do-able idea. That doesn’t mean it will happen. Or be implemented in red counties. But it’s an idea to a major problem.

The Western European countries are indeed having a really hard time with this for a bunch of reasons.

For example, in the UK, Brexit has crippled their ability to raise expenditures. And the political turmoil has made it very difficult to even plan a coherent strategy. Let alone implement it.

Germany is still trying to work out a new internal social contract that can respond to an actively hostile Russia.

And all democratic countries have a layer of Russian shills within in National leaderships. With big questions on the direction of the US after the 2022 and 2024 elections. We are still paying for the 2016 tfg election and 4 years of misrule.

I grew up and served during the Cold War where armies involved millions of serviceman, thousands of tanks, artillery pieces, etc.

And now I am finding out that the French have less than 50 Caesar artillery pieces, the Germans a few hundred tanks, and smaller powers even less…

I guess that I am of two minds.

First, it’s great that the money was reallocated to to other things that are, presumably more productive and contributing to society.

Second, the war in Ukraine shows that it would be better to have more depth in one’s defense capability.

I suspect that it will take a couple of more years before defense production gears up to sustaining levels.

Fortunately, the West has a significant economic and productive advantage over Russia. And that is before corruption and incompetence are included. If we can keep our republic.

Suitable for a woman who tried to ban sex toys. Conservatives are pretty much the same everywhere (see also Ted Cruz trying to enforce the numerical dildo ban in Texas).

Margaret Thatcher tried to ban sex toys in the name of ‘public decency’ (Metro, December 30, 2014)

Maggie Thatcher once considered banning sex toys during her time as Prime Minister, it has been revealed.

Never known for her liberal attitude in life, Baroness Thatcher, who died last year, wanted to do away with dildos to protect ‘public decency’.

This is pretty ironic, considering her nick-name, The Iron Lady, actually sounds like the name of a dildo.

The National Archive have released documents which show Mrs Thatcher met with anti-obscenity campaigner Mary Whitehouse twice to discuss the issue, and said there was a ‘strong case’ to ban sex toys in Britain.

Why would fentanyl be in cocaine? Speedball? Then they most likely intended to buy heroin and coke. Never heard of a premix speedball.

From the article:

Fentanyl is a powerful legal opioid, prescribed for cancer patients and others with severe pain. Traffickers have found it is easy and inexpensive to make. The illicit form has spread throughout the illegal drug market, turning up in heroin as well as pills stamped out to look like oxycodone or Adderall and other drugs.

Dealers also cut it into cocaine, a stimulant, to be more potent and addictive, introducing the drug to unsuspecting buyers. A tiny amount of fentanyl can kill unseasoned users.

“Hey try not to do too much because it’s really strong,” read a text sent to Ms. Scher later that night from the delivery number. Ms. Ghahramani missed seven calls from the number.

Deaths hit an annual high of 107,521 people in 2021, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up 51% since 2019. Three-quarters of the 2021 deaths involved fentanyl, the CDC said.

But cocaine is a stimulant. Fentanyl is an opiate. So they were buying speedballs which is an opiate(heroin) with cocaine added. They are junkies.

The issue is not what they thought they were buying. The issue is how the seller tried to increase profit by cutting the cocaine with cheaper fentanyl. Cocaine has been cut with other stuff (like baking powder). Adding fentanyl still provides an alteration of senses, as long as too much isn’t added.

There are wingnuts calling for the banning of fentanyl, particularly after all the copaganda claiming police officers are being sickened after touching it (fentanyl is not absorbed through the skin).

The main issue is that fentanyl is easier to make than cocaine, so a number of producers of cocaine might cut it with fentanyl, then sell it to street dealers. The dealer nor the buyer really knows if the cocaine has been adulterated or not, and many states prohibit possession of fentanyl testing kits (that is considered drug paraphernalia and many states will prosecute such possession).

Both cocaine and fentanyl are Schedule II drugs (they are legal under prescription from a doctor—the Navy prescribed me cocaine hydrochloride after a nasal surgery once, and the VA prescribed fentanyl for my hand surgeries several times during recovery—fentanyl is also frequently prescribed to dying cancer patients).

Because of the OMYGAWDFENTANYLMEXICODRUGMULESOPENBORDERSDERPDERP a bunch of Republicans want to change fentanyl to schedule I (no accepted medical use which is a lie). There has been pushback from physicians and pharmacists against the GOP, but a moral panic always sells better to conservative voters than science.

However, the problems with unregulated products has been widely recognized since the 1870’s. The FDA was created in the 1930’s on the heels of a chemical company marketing an analogue of anti-freeze to the public as a miracle ‘sulfa’ drug. It reportedly killed 100 people.

Capitalism and lack of accountability can be a deadly combination.

The drug in question was sulfa (the antibiotic). Massengill (the manufacturer) wanted to expand their market in the South, but Southerners preferred medications as an elixir rather than a tablet.

The chief chemist for Massengill formulated “elixir sulfanilimide” to fulfil the market demand, using diethylene glycol rather than ethanol, because sulfa doesn’t dissolve well in ethanol.

The fledgling FDA didn’t have the authority to pull the drug based on safety reasons at the time, but they did have the authority to pull it due to false advertising (elixir is defined as a drug dissolved in ethanol).

The owner of the company, when pressed to admit some measure of culpability, infamously answered, “We have been supplying a legitimate professional demand and not once could have foreseen the unlooked-for results. I do not feel that there was any responsibility on our part.” Watkins, the chemist, committed suicide while awaiting trial.

In the category “there are morans in Canada, too”:

Most people check the requirements to enter another nation so they aren’t unduly delayed or turned around at the border. I spent weeks before going to Canada making sure everything was in order before we travelled to New Brunswick.

I hope that cost your friend a fair amount of money. A vaccine in Canada would have been much cheaper.

Musk is an interesting figure. I’d say he has an affinity with the Republicans due to being a libertarian dudebro manchild. It also seems he’s not completely gone, as his practical support of the Ukrainian military operations shows, despite his naive views about a solution. Seems like he is trying to be a “chaotic neutral”, for the lack of a better description.

Little people lived in the hills:

Hunter-Gatherer’s Skull Found in Taiwan

[…] Analysis of the bones suggests they belonged to a young woman who stood just over four feet tall, and resembled people of the so-called Negrito ethnic groups of the Philippines and Southeast Asia. […]

Full paper:

Negritos in Taiwan and the wider prehistory of Southeast Asia: new discovery from the Xiaoma Caves

Taiwan is known as the homeland of the Austronesian-speaking groups, yet other populations already had lived here since the Pleistocene. Conventional notions have postulated that the Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers were replaced or absorbed into the Neolithic Austronesian farming communities. Yet, some evidence has indicated that sparse numbers of non-Austronesian individuals continued to live in the remote mountains as late as the 1800s. The cranial morphometric study of human skeletal remains unearthed from the Xiaoma Caves in eastern Taiwan, for the first time, validates the prior existence of small stature hunter-gatherers 6000 years ago in the preceramic phase. This female individual shared remarkable cranial affinities and small stature characteristics with the Indigenous Southeast Asians, particularly the Negritos in northern Luzon. This study solves the several-hundred-years-old mysteries of ‘little black people’ legends in Formosan Austronesian tribes and brings insights into the broader prehistory of Southeast Asia.

Stuff like this bothers me because it’s not “the same nation”. The physical country hasn’t changed at all, but the contents thereof have changed a LOT since then. The world we live in now is not the same world that existed almost 50 years ago; that generation is dying, and newer, younger generations are taking over.

A Michigan woman is being charged after allegedly stealing items from Walmart by not scanning all of her items at the self-checkout.

Police say 34-year-old TeddyJo Marie Fliam was using the self-checkout at an Alpena County Walmart when loss prevention workers noticed she wasn’t scanning every item. Fliam became agitated and denied she was skipping items when confronted by a loss prevention worker and left the store, according to a report from Fox 2.

The incident caused the store to review its surveillance footage, which showed Fliam had stolen more than $1,000 in merchandise by not scanning it from the Walmart since April.

The AI has more soul and humanity than Roger Waters.

(We were all big fans of Pink Floyd in their glory prog rock days, but this was the album that put me off them forever.

I’ve been listening to older Pink Floyd recently, especially “Animals”.

Brilliant prog rock. And a totally different feel than material from Genesis, Yes, and most of the other stuff I listen to of that genre.

And it seems to me to be a very well-done synthesis of Waters’ lyrics (often cynical and depressed) with ethereal and sort of dreamy or expansive musical passages. Wright’s keyboard work and Gilmour’s guitar are wonders. And between Animals and The Wall it appears that Waters starts dominating things further and further.* The Wall overall is sort of depressing and the material I like in it is that generally mainly featuring Gilmour.

I find The Final Cut unlistenable. Seems to me to be forty-some minutes of Waters whining about his father being killed in WW2 and the world in general. Which cemented to me that as Waters froze out the others in the writing and creative process the synthesis that made Pink Floyd great to listen to was removed as well.

I find post-Waters Pink Floyd good to listen too. It’s missing a certain edge that Waters added to things, but they were also trying to get into the prog rock groove and feel of their material from before The Wall I think. And they sort of succeeded.

* - Wright having drug problems at the time seems to have been a major factor. Heavily reduced his productivity and apparently infuriated Waters.

Same. $1000 is nothing to them. Why bother? Unless maybe they wanted justification to ban her from that store (which really wouldn’t do much as there are tons of Wal-Marts around).

Remember too that they calculate that shrinkage based on their spent cost not the foregone retail

Yes, and also by my lack of domain knowledge. “National security announcement” could mean so many things, I wouldn’t even know where to begin speculating. It’s the DOJ, so I assume it has to be criminal-related.

Boris panicked at Covid (remember his “herd immunity” proposal that went nowhere?) because he knew that between that and Brexit, the UK economy was going to take a double-whammy hit that would likely send it into a irrecoverable tailspin.

Now add the world energy/inflation crisis and you have the Perfect Tory Storm.

Or not:

When asked about the “rising problem of transphobia” within the party, Sunak said: “Prejudice against trans people is wrong. The Conservative Party is an open, welcoming family to everybody across society, no matter who they are and irrespective of their background.”

But it’s complicated. (It seems likely to me that he has no views at all and is happy to pander to whatever group he’s in front of.)

Last week I was at a Wal-Mart neighborhood market. This store has ALL self checkouts now, there are no manned cashier lanes anymore.

While I was checking out, virtually all of the self checkouts were being used and there was only ONE employee overseeing them. Given that ratio, I’m sure it would be incredibly easy to “forget” to scan a couple of things and have it go under the stores radar.

Store probably figures it’s cheaper than hiring personnel to scan the purchases.

When I was in high school, someone gave me a copy of The Final Cut and told me, “It’s OK, but it’s really not Pink Floyd - it’s more like ‘Roger Waters and Friends’.”

Well…he wasn’t wrong.

I consider myself to be an honest person but I just don’t want the hassle of having to go back into the store, confess to the attendant, and then run the item through and pay for it. I seldom use the self-checkout line but usually have some kind of problem with the process. I won’t do it if there are more than a couple items UNLESS I’m shopping really late at the 24 hour Woodman’s. They don’t have anyone working the counters in the overnight shift.

I’m the same. It usually happens to me at Wal-Mart, so I justify it by saying it’s probably a semi-regular occurrence for a lot of people and the store likely doesn’t give a shit if they don’t get the $4.25 from the gallon of milk I forgot to scan. Sometimes I’ll make a small donation to a cause I support to offset the money I didn’t spend at the store.

As a bonus, any time you’re turned away from the border, crossing again becomes A NIGHTMARE. You’re always going to be highly scrutinized, you’ll never get a couple of simple questions and be on your way. This is something you’ll carry with you for a long time if not forever.

That said, I’m not buying this. I cross the border all the time. The US never once asked me this. Never. Canada, OTOH did. They don’t now but they did until relatively recently. Now mind you, I wasn’t crossing when the border was closed so I don’t know how that played out, but it’s been open for months now.

With that said, a United States citizen who is returning from Canada would not be subject to said restrictions, which is truly unfortunate; it’s a lot more likely an American would be unvaccinated than a foreign visitor.

I guess the Tories are going to chew through all their minority and woman lesser leaders one after another until nothing but the Eton Boys are left?

That’s how they won WW2, sitting in bunkers behind the lines while they send the lower and middle classes out to assault the trenches.

Graduates of the “public” schools, like Eton, had a much higher mortality rate than the general British serviceman during World War I— 20% versus 13%.

Stuff like this bothers me because it’s not “the same nation”. The physical country hasn’t changed at all, but the contents thereof have changed a LOT since then. The world we live in now is not the same world that existed almost 50 years ago; that generation is dying, and newer, younger generations are taking over.

[Embedded content]

Yup!

I think that the leavening in the 1970s was the presence of a generation that had seen and fought in WW2 and lived the Great Depression. They had seen what happens when countries go awry.

The folks that had seen what a world war does are all gone now. And the new generation cannot, apparently, imagine the horror. Thus they place immediate personal gain over communal well being. And are rewarded for it.

Herodotus commented on this very human phenomenon thousands of years ago.

My grandfather used to sum it up as “Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations”. Which in “Missouri speak” of the time meant from poverty to wealth back to poverty in the course of three generations in a family.

The other thing to keep in mind is that my generation, and to a large extent the generation before me, and for certain the generations after me - we were all brought up in an era of relative wealth and ease. The oil embargo of 1973-1974 was a thing of the past; I didn’t learn about it until the first time gas hit $1, which was shocking to me, but my parents told me about the 1970’s and what they went through as a dating/young married couple. I never really knew hardship, neither did any of my friends or younger relatives. There’s a deep seed of an entitlement mentality in my generation that comes along with the fact that for many of them, they have never been without - and that’s the crux of the right-wing message: Those People (tm) are coming to take away what you have intrinsically always had, and push you into the unknown territory of poverty. It’s not true, not in the slightest, but the fear of the unknown is a powerful motivator.

Might just be the border guard was lazy and didn’t fill in all the proper details.

It’s just not American. We’d do 10/1/2022. And a border agent who fills these out all the time filling it out improperly? Possible but I’m still not buying it. It smells like week old fish.

I will say, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re wrong that the incident didn’t happen. It’s not like the anti-vaxxers are paragons of truthfulness and morality.

that’s because they sent all the junior lieutenants into no-man’s land to lead attacks on German machine guns armed only with a whistle and a swagger stick.

‘Twas ten years ago come December.

Expats tend to get a bit homesick around the holidays….then I caught the news on Sandy Hook and realized I did not have to worry too much about the safety of my kids in the schools here in Germany.

My homesickness lessened greatly at that moment.

Was getting ready to do a little hedge trimming as the passionflora vine has gotten a bit out of control and I wanted to plant some Chinese poppies for spring…as I was getting ready to charge the car anyway, I thought I’d test the 110v adapter that came with it first…works great. One of these days I’m going to drive up to a scenic overlook, plug in my 50 watt Boss amp, and shred for the whales.

Gave me a start. There is a College of Visual and Performing Arts at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. And there is a “Kings Highway” not too far away.

I am saddened that so many people are suffering and dying so that a few gun merchants make money. And that ideologues and tv shows make believe that guns and killing solve problems rather than create them.

re: #296 Charles Johnson

A small nitpick: aside from the fact that Evans’s source is the highly problematic Hitler’s Table Talks, here’s what the leading researcher of this book Mikael Nilsson has to say in Hitler Redux: The Incredible History of Hitler’s So-Called Table Talks:

Historians far too often regard matters that Hitler may very well have said off the cuff as already-decided-upon plans for the future of the Reich or for the occupied territories in the East and so on. The utterances about what was to happen to the people and the land in the East, recorded during the early months of Operation Barbarossa in the summer of 1941, have been frequently quoted by historians and presented as being Hitler’s plans for the future. This is done even though the same historians otherwise show that they understand that Hitler rarely, if ever, planned anything so far in advance. He was a slave to his impulsiveness in politics, as in the field of military matters, and his reluctance to be nailed down on issues concerning the future is one of the best attested of his character traits in the Hitler literature. Several witnesses, including Heim, testify that Hitler was thinking out loud, and sometimes testing ideas, during these dinners and Teestunden. Indeed, he could not have laid out plans that he did not have yet. The notes probably tell us more about the kind of mind that would utter statements like these than they do about the actual future of the occupied territories, had Hitler won the war.
