This is “Fine me hard in the ass!” territory for the Wisconsin Republicans. NBC got their ass kicked for having EAS tones in a promo. I have ham radio software that decodes EAS tones and I feed YouTube through it to see what codes and areas come out.

Plus modern weather radios use those tones to switch on the radio to pass an alert, based on the embedded FIPS code (the country is divided into tens of thousands of alert areas: You can code your radio for one or more codes for alerts).

To send out the EAS signal to the entire friggin’ state during a tornado emergency is incredibly reckless.

FOX Sports was fined $540,000 by the FCC for using the tone to promote a football game.

The segment, which aired on more than 200 television and radio stations, was connected to a promotion for a football game.

I don’t think that this comes as a surprise to anybody sane.

It’s less insane that an outright invasion, but it’s…exactly the model that didn’t work in South America, and therefore is still pretty insane.

Sanity would be asking questions about why addiction happens and not criminalizing it.

But that would make the ROI go down for a lot of people in the defense and border industries….

Before the storm came through here (and a mighty one it was!), I headed out to prepare a tank for my onion sets, and heard some odd clicking and cooing. A courting pair of nice, plump turkeys were strolling up to my back door. When my mother first moved over here, twenty years ago, a turkey came strutting past the kitchen window, and she called me and said, “There’s an ostrich in the yard!” A neighbor dealt in zoo stock, so it wasn’t out of the range of possibilities, but we narrowed it down.

Many years ago, I worked at a radio station doing a satirical news/sketch program. For our May 1 show one year, one of the writers wanted us to shout “mayday! mayday!” which, um… probably would have cost the station their broadcast license. The FCC has no sense of humor.

That’s a pro-Modi account that compiles Hindu grievances and complains that Indian government “secularism” is anti-Hindu. Not quite openly talking Hindutva, but continually making the argument that Muslims are aggressors against Hindus. Dig deeper in their thread and they merge leftism and Islam as having common cause.

Also, the thread cites a bunch of Daily Mail equivalents to frame events in India, where admittedly regional politics can be deeply shit and noone is the good guy, but where the constant BJP line is that trouble comes from non-Hindus and the answer is…more police, more ideological policing. There’s also a slice of denying caste violence against violence and some shit-talking about Sikhs bothered by a major policing action being done to find one seperatist dude. BJP Hinduism excludes a lot of Hindus, too, so there’s also some HINO labelling.

So when two blood-red conservatives condemn “Hinduphobia” chances are pretty good they’re doing it because the BJP has been expanding its connection to US politicians.

Basically, this is the Indian equivalent of the US culture war, with the exact same “we’re victimized because we feel Muslims are treated more sensitively”: constantly finding slights and playing them into outrages, then using that as fuel to build a more authoritarian state with more extralegal violence.

Once you get the key vocabulary, the similiarities between their far right and ours become unmistakable. Inside the basic “we’re victims” semiotics are a whole set of tropes that label people deserving contempt and not-Indian-ness.

The tweet I added above is circulating a commonly held opinion among reactionaries that Bollywood is actually run by Muslims with the intent of degrading authentic Hindu culture.

This is why I never cottoned to the post-9.11 anti-Muslim rhetoric; I’d been listening to the type of Hindus that do pogroms sell the exact “antisemitic tropes, but sub in Muslims” thing for my whole life.

Associated Press, yesterday

US Marine’s adoption of Afghan war orphan voided

Kidnapping in the name of Jesus. The story gets worse the more you read it.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — In a highly unusual ruling, a state court judge on Thursday voided a U.S. Marine’s adoption of an Afghan war orphan, more than a year after he took the little girl away from the Afghan couple raising her. But her future remains uncertain.

For now, the child will stay with Marine Maj. Joshua Mast and his wife, Stephanie, under a temporary custody order they obtained before the adoption. The Masts will have to re-prove to the court that they should be granted a permanent adoption.
Read AP’s Investigation:

- Afghan couple accuse US Marine of abducting their baby

Despite the uncertainty, the ruling was a welcome move for the Afghan couple, who had been identified by the Afghan government as the child’s relatives in February 2020 and raised her for 18 months. They dropped to their knees in prayer outside the courthouse. As they held each other, the young man wiped the tears from both their eyes with his wife’s headscarf.

The Masts quickly left the courthouse after Thursday’s hearing, flanked by their attorneys. The parties are forbidden from commenting by a gag order.

The dispute raised alarms at the highest levels of government, from the White House to the Taliban, after an Associated Press investigation in October revealed how Mast became determined to rescue the baby and bring her home as an act of Christian faith. But until now, the adoption order has remained in place.

“There’s never, ever been a case like this,” said Judge Claude V. Worrell Jr. on Thursday.

My son was given the smallpox vaccine after it was phased out in the USA, because of my military posting in Spain. Controversial social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan have been moved from custody to house arrest following a ruling by a Romanian judge.

The ruling by the Court of Appeal in Bucharest replaces the latest period of custody, which was to end on 29 April.

Two associates, Georgiana Naghel and Luana Radu, are also being released.

All four have been ordered to stay in the buildings where they live, unless they have judicial permission to leave.

A spokeswoman for the Tate brothers told the BBC the brothers were “ecstatic”.

After being released, Andrew posted a video of himself pacing in a room while smoking a cigar, saying: “Since last year I’ve been in 24-hour lockdown. No yard time.

It’s less insane that an outright invasion, but it’s…exactly the model that didn’t work in South America, and therefore is still pretty insane.

Sanity would be asking questions about why addiction happens and not criminalizing it.

But that would make the ROI go down for a lot of people in the defense and border industries….

Yesterday in the Grand Island Independent

ACLU files suit against Northwest Public Schools

Northwest Public Schools and Superintendent Jeff Edwards face a lawsuit stemming from an LGTBQ-driven decision to end the high school’s student newspaper, the Saga.

According to a statement by ACLU of Nebraska, “The lawsuit argues that school officials’ decision to shutter the newspaper violated plaintiffs’ First Amendment free speech rights on three counts: their right to be free of viewpoint discrimination, their right to be free of retaliation and their right to receive information.”

The lawsuit seeks a judge’s declaration the district violated the law and award damages as the court sees fit.

Pennell said in a statement: “Ever since I graduated, I felt I had a responsibility to seek accountability and advocate for the students who are still there, especially the LGBTQ+ kids. We have a right to be who we are and to write about our lives.”

Pennell, a transgender student, is a former Saga staff member, who has since graduated. In April 2022, Pennell used his preferred name in the publication. The newspaper staff was subsequently reprimanded by school administrators and directed to use legal names.

Students on staff decided to produce an LGBTQ Pride-themed June issue, which contained three LGBTQ-related, student-written articles along with stories about a Northwest High School student’s national art honor and a review of “Worst Roommate Ever.”

Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Apr 1, 2023 • 4:18:39am

More from the article above:

The June 2022 Saga, often referred to now as the Pride issue, was published May 16, 2022. It turned out to be the school newspaper’s final issue.

After news of the Saga’s fate was made public last summer, ACLU of Nebraska submitted a public records request, which resulted in hundreds of documents, including emails and text messages.

In a May 17 email to Edwards, Northwest High School Principal P.J. Smith and Activities Director Matthew Fritsche, Northwest school board president Dan Leiser said: “I’ve read the publications in the Viking Saga. I’m sure this is a revenge tactic from the pronoun thing a month or so ago ….”

Later in the email, Leiser said, “I’m hot on this one, because it’s not ok. The national media does the same crap and I’ve had enough of it. No more school paper, in my opinion. You give someone an inch, they take it a mile.”

Northwest school board member Paul Mader sent an email that same day to fellow board members. In it, he included a photo of Pennell’s story about the “don’t say gay” bill.

“Has anyone read our school paper this month?” Mader asked in the group email.

Staff and students were notified of the Saga’s elimination on May 19.

Seeing Red Nebraska, February 3. 2023

New Governor, same feedlot smell: Pillen prepares to pillage rural broadband funds

On January 6, just a day after taking office, new Nebraska governor “Step Into a Slim” Jim Pillen took his first steps toward financially rewarding his Good ‘Ol Boy network by announcing the creation of a new “Broadband Office” by executive order. This office will take over the Nebraska Broadband Bridge Program (NBBP), passed by the legislature in LB388 last year and signed into law by the less hirsute but equally porcine former governor Ricketts. As you can read here (description of the programme now removed from the state government Website and only returning a blank page—note by me), the NBBP will use a variety of federal and state funds to help bring long-overdue broadband service to parts of rural Nebraska. And we’re all for it! This is a critical program for evening the playing field for rural residents of our state, letting them compete both in modern business and have a real-time voice in the marketplace of ideas.

What we’re NOT a fan of is what Jimmy P. is already trying to do with the NBBP to hide crony kickbacks from public scrutiny: while announcing his executive order, Lincoln senator Suzanne Geist (you might recognize her “rural auntie” makeover vibe beaming down from practically every billboard in the city for her mayoral run, or you might remember her father’s tainted blood scandal that killed thousands of Canadians) introduced LB683, which further refines the details toward implementing the new Broadband Office. In last year’s LB388, NBBP authority was designated to Nebraska’s Public Service Commission, the state agency most logically equipped to navigate such matters, as they already have experience with telecommunications systems and the kinds of grants and initiatives that expand and improve our communications infrastructure. There are standards to follow, metrics to be achieved, and deadlines to make, or we stand to lose many millions of dollars in federal funds. The Public Service Commission has successfully administered many annual cycles of broadband grant programs across the state, and they’re already handling these deadlines for the first year of NBBP.

There’s a lot of Czechs convinced, thanks to some media outlets, that the Czech economy is in the absolute toilet and that food riots are gonna break out any day now. This is mostly far-right/far-left/anti-government oligarch media pushing that line.

If the Czech economy was really in the shitter, it’d be noticeable. Is it as good as it was, let’s say, five years ago? No, it’s not. But it’s also pretty damn far from the economic apocalypse these media outlets like to portray.

There is always something to handwring about economically. For years people fretted that if there was another economic downturn the hands of the Fed would be tied because the fed rate was already at zero, and now that interest rates are back in the historically normal range they are fretting that the banking system can’t take it. Meanwhile its possible that we may actually achieve a soft landing of gradually decreasing inflation without tipping the economy into a recession. But of course Fox News and the GOP have a vested interest in portraying the economy in the worst possible light.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has confirmed the Turkish parliament’s decision to ratify Finland’s Nato membership, several Turkish media outlets reported on Saturday. The president’s final decision has been published in Turkey’s official gazette.

The Turkish parliament decided late on Thursday to ratify Finland’s Nato membership. The president’s signature concludes Ankara’s drawn-out ratification of Finnish membership, which has been pending since last summer. Under Turkish law, Erdogan had up to 15 days to sign the ratification - and he waited nearly that long to sign North Macedonia’s Nato ratification in 2020.

To set the record straight: This drama around teaching Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture, one of the most important works of art in existence, has become a distraction from, and a parody of, the actual aims of classical education.
