Charles, keeping on making me buy new music.

I know, I got into them a while back when he posted stuff off of a then new album and I fell in love with them. Exquisite trio work, even with the lineup changes.

holy shit he’s playing a guitar

mastodon.social

I saw Bob Dylan at Red Rocks in 2007. It was a pretty magnificent evening of music. Only time I’ve seen him. I know his live performances can be a mixed bag.

He played guitar on exactly one song the whole show (he played keyboards the rest of the night, along with his trademark harmonica), the first tune of the night, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35. I knew I was in for something good when I saw that. He played a combination of his new and old stuff. I heard him play Blowin’ In The Wind that night.

Are “Never Trump” Republicans Actually Just Democrats Now?

While not convinced large numbers of them will vote Democratic, it is obvious reading this that there is (will be) a civil war in the US. But it will not be between conservatives and liberals, as so many MAGA Republicans think. It is betwen the nutballs and the Never Trumpers. We are seeing is play out in the House right now.

They will have to solve their own civil war before liberals really need to begin worrying, I suspect.

The only distinction between “Never-Trumpers” and MAGAts is the former still possess a functioning brain stem and so feel some measure of shame from being associated with the walking turd. As has been demonstrated time and again in the past 5 years, once you get past that surface layer, most are every bit as fascist as the MAGAts. It’s how somebody like Meatball Ron has managed to rise in the ranks, the hope that he could be “Trump-lite” in a theoretical primary field where Trump had exited politics entirely.

For the same reason that we have a sign that clearly says “OUT OF ORDER” on the card reader for the front door, yet I still get geniuses who run their card and pull on the door three or four times before looking at me for help. One asswipe last night acknowledged that he’d seen the sign…but still criticized us for “poor customer service” because he apparently needed a huge neon sign that says “DOOR BROKEN, USE THE DOOR YOU ALREADY ENTERED THROUGH FIVE MINUTES AGO, DUMBASS” before he understood.

I bought a bike torque wrench. I found out I really suck at guessing how tight I wrench bolts. On three different sets of 4 bolts that should match each other, they were all over the place. Overall, I’d say half the bolts were too tight and half were too loose, and one was just barely below the right torque. This wrench only goes up to 20 newton meters so now I’ll need one for the higher torque bolts on the crank and pedals.

I agree with you but regarding the civil war they seem to want so much, it seems they are now attacking each other more than any liberals. Paxton vs Texas (Bush) , the House, Trump vs forced birtghets, etc.

There is a civil war going on but it is between parts of the GOP - mostly the establishment, Wall Street vs Trumpers. This could decimate both sides, leaving a power vacuum as the GOP disintegrates.

One foot-pound is approximately 136 Newton-centimeters. Since I used a torque wrench a couple of times to get around 20 foot-pounds, it was funny to think of one being used in my mouth.

The only thing keeping the entire shitshow going at this point is the devotion of the party voter base to their porcine god. Any time you remove him from the equation, what you end up with is a bunch of scared children desperately searching for their daddy. It’s why DeSantis looked like he might have a shot at the WH at one time, because so long as he was within the confines of his little banana republic, he could act as big a dick as Trump with a compliant legislature to make all his little fantasies come true. But much like a deep-sea fish, remove him from the unique environment he evolved to thrive in and he collapses into a pile of gray jelly. Same holds true for jackasses like MTG and Gas Pedal, whose clout relies entirely upon sharing the remote to the spiked buttplug they crammed up Qevin’s ass as part of the price to be Speaker. As soon as he loses the gavel, they’ll find that nobody wants to follow them because everybody on the same level as them is every bit as stupid and ambitious.

An issue not mentioned over the Togo-flagged ship that his a mine in Romanian waters.

If Romania invoked Article Five of the Atlantic Treaty and NATO responded by opposing Russia’s forces, Turkey would close the Bosphorus Straits to NATO warships.

As of now, those straits are closed to the belligerents in the war, which only affects Russia. NATO can still conduct freedom-of-navigation sailings throughout the international waters of the Black Sea.

That would change if a NATO-flagged vessel was hit in a NATO country’s waters. The calculus would be on that country (for example, if an Italian-flagged vessel was hit, Italy would have to make the call).

It will be interesting to see what happens with abortion. Trump has doubled down about allowing some abortions during a certain time period. This will not sit well with the maniacs. Will it be enough to break the connection? Not sure but it might cause some problems. We are already seeing some like DeSantis try to use this as a wedge.

The “faithful” already got their “W” with Dobbs, they’re not going to get too awful bent out of shape about his supposed reversal. All he’s really doing is trying to rob his rivals of abortion as a wedge with “moderate” voters by suggesting that there might be a compromise that he’d support and they’d be comfortable with. Anybody who thinks they’re going to be able to capitalize on this to draw votes away from him is delusional.

This is going really slow looking for that comment I put up with the URL of the science and medicine code list.

I am using the search terms “scientist” and “BlueSky” (which I know I put in my original comment with the link to the Google Doc). I just got to the LGF comment where I said I reserved my name there while I tried to figure out what to do with an account.

BlueSky is getting better with banning chuds, but I still have a Christian there who uttered a murder threat against me a couple days ago. He’s also been spewing antisemitic and rape crap. (I made a complaint to the FBI and my local sheriff about that.) As of yet he hasn’t been banned.

That guy is a Calvinist and Biblical legalist. (Like almost all amateur apologists, he’s only been armed with a few talking points he parrots though the murder threats are new to me). After the first murder threat, I probably shouldn’t have called him a liar (I’ll bet you haven’t killed anyone in the name of God yet) and a coward (because I can be found on the Internet including my phone and address).

I am locking my doors though.

So on a different topic, last night’s dinner.

My wife was looking through her old Searchlight Cookbook and came across a recipe for “Eighteen-Hour Potatoes.”

This recipe involves cooking thinly-sliced potatoes in a loaf pan with cheese and other things, then setting a weight (a cast-iron loaf pan works) inside, refrigerating for eighteen hours, then heating and slicing it up in thick sections.

The recipe calls for extremely-thin sliced potatoes using a mandoline, so they will stick together when pressed.

We have a mandoline we inherited with the house, a cheap plastic straight-blade one from the Seventies with interchangeable plates for various thicknesses, including Julianne and shoestring cuts. I’ve used it a couple times and I’m not impressed with it (plus the blade is in the open).

She’d never used a mandoline before and insisted she would do it. (I am not a cook by any means, so her assumption was I had no idea how to use it.)

She sliced the potatoes too thickly (about ¼” thick), so when she dumped them out of the loaf pan to heat, they were not a loaf. They spilled all over more like an au gratin.

Anyway, it was very good, though she was not happy with the way it looked.

I offered to show her how to change the plastic plates in the mandoline (which the way it is designed is somewhat dangerous), or alternatively, buy a better mandoline. She passed. She said she’ll have me change the plates in the future if she ever uses it again.

Here in California someone got the five white balls correct. While in other states that is usually $1M, here in California the lottery is parimutuel and sometimes that works for the winner and sometimes that works against the winner.

This time it worked for the winner:

‘Perverted intentions’: McCarthy allies rage against ‘arsonists’ in their own party over government shutdown

Allies of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) this week raged against hard-line Republicans in their own party as leadership in the House of Representatives works to stave off a looming government shutdown, The Hill reports.

Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA) told reporters. “I think people’s perverted intentions have really caused problems this year.”

“The arsonists are out there, number one, whining that their house is on fire; number two, are going to want credit that they put the fire out; and then number three, are gonna set up a GoFundMe site to get paid for it,” Graves added

Graves later said the fault of a government shutdown would lie squarely with those who engaged in “disingenuous” behavior.

“I think that if we get into a shutdown, it’s because there was a failure in strategy that was absolutely manipulated or distorted by disingenuous behavior, intentions and probably ignorance,” he said.

As The Hill reports, House “leadership does not have the votes to advance a short-term funding bill to keep the lights on past Sept. 30, with a handful of hard-line Republicans handing [McCarthy] setback after setback. They are also not yet taking the step of working with Democrats on a compromise, a move that would further inflame the rebels and potentially threaten McCarthy’s Speakership.”

“They like to stop everything and then they turn around and say it’s your fault, you’re not getting anything done,” McCarthy said.

“I don’t understand, if a few people here want to hold it out why do the border agents have to pay? Why do the Coast Guard have to pay? Why do they not have to be paid because somebody wants to throw some fit here?” McCarthy added. “That’s not right.”

The same bullshyte argument from conservaliars that there’s no such thing as a negative right.

The I Amendment protects free speech. You can choose not to speak.

The V Amendment prohibits the government from forcing self-incrimination. You can choose to confess to a crime.

The I Amendment protects freedom of religion. It does not compel you to have one, nor does it prohibit non-belief.

They are conservatives, therefore they are liars. They are lying about the Constitution for their religious position; that makes them anti-American.

Good move.

I’m working on a bike for my Seattle friend that she picked up here at the bike coop. Lots of loose stuff, brake shoes the riskiest.

History has a sense of humor - and an ironic one at that:

The Biden administration is in talks with Vietnam over an agreement for the largest arms transfer in history between the ex-Cold War adversaries, according to two people familiar with a deal that could irk China and sideline Russia.

A package, which could come together within the next year, could consummate the newly upgraded partnership between Washington and Hanoi with the sale of a fleet of American F-16 fighter jets as the Southeast Asian nation faces tensions with Beijing in the disputed South China Sea, one of the people said.

The deal is still in its early stages, with exact terms yet to be worked out, and may not come together. But it was a key topic of Vietnamese-US official talks in Hanoi, New York and Washington over the past month.

Just goes to show what a senseless tragedy the Vietnam War was. We should never have helped shore up the French in Indochina after WWII and supported decolonialization, but the US was obsessed with the notion that there was a unified communist bloc seeking to conquer the world that had to be fervently opposed everywhere.

Will be interesting to see if this unhinges the Russian defense line to the west. I guess that depends on how the Russian supply lines flow and if the current Ukrainian push is cutting off those units.

Reading this story, it occurs to me the thief in question knew precisely what he was there to steal.

The thief pulled up to an antiquities gallery on La Cienega Boulevard with a clear plan.

He backed a rental van into the gallery driveway, broke through a gate and entered a storage yard carrying a moving dolly. Bypassing African wood carvings, Japanese terracotta roof tiles and assorted stone sculptures, he seized a massive 250-pound bronze Buddha statue worth $1.5 million. The entire operation took less than 25 minutes.

The identity and motive of the thief who hit the Barakat Gallery around 3 a.m. on Monday remained a mystery Saturday. Was he a connoisseur of temple art from feudal Japan? Was he hired by someone who was? Or was he just one of the many scrap metal scroungers who prowl Los Angeles by night and entirely oblivious to the object’s historical value?

With Los Angeles police investigating, gallery staff were re-watching surveillance video that captured part of the crime and batting around various theories.

The US supplied a massive amount of military aid to Yugoslavia during the Truman and Eisenhower administrations. This followed the acrimonious Tito/Stalin split of 1948. The military gear was in response to a genuine fear of a Soviet invasion, as happened later in Hungary and Czechoslokia. The aid stopped in the late 50s but some of the equipment stayed around long enough to see combat in the civil wars that followed the Yugoslav breakup in the 1990s.

Oh, good morning.

I do wonder if that was some kind of contracted theft. Or maybe something like the 1990 Gardner Heist - the FBI is pretty sure the Boston Mafia was involved and that the stolen artworks were sent to Connecticut and Philadelphia after a decade of laying low, with what they believe was an attempted sale in Philadelphia in 2002.

When I was in the 6th grade, they put me in the ‘gifted’ program, which was consolidated in a history class that met for part of the day, kinda like jr. high did, they told us. Then they let us pick a country to write a big report on. I thought, ‘Cool. I’ll do Yugoslavia’, because one of my grandmothers was born there, so I had an information source.

Gramma was no help. She did tell me that it was the Austro-Hungarian Empire when she was born there. I was overwhelmed by books about it. I got no academic supervision. I turned something in, and finished the class, then I yanked myself out of the gifted program.

Aubergines are eggplants for you red hats.

Charles De Gaulle started the shitshow in 1946 (TL;DR version: re-occupied Vietnam out of war-wounded pride, and to avoid giving the Communists a “win”), but the US ended up taking over the “responsibility” by the mid-50s.

Say kids!

Guess who else called for General Milley’s execution!

If YOU guessed Paul Gozar…Congratulations!

GOP rep’s weekly newsletter muses that ‘in a better society’ Gen. Milley ‘would be hung’

alternet.org

In his weekly newsletter, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) called for the execution of Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Mark Milley, musing that “in a better society, quislings” like Milley “would be hung.”

The text of Gosar’s newsletter was published on X Sunday by reporter Ben Jacobs, who included a screenshot of the far-right congressman’s diatribe. Discussing the events of Jan. 6, 2021, Gosar writes:

After the riot was in full swing, the Chief’s request for National Guard was finally approved. But even after approval was given, General Milley, the homosexual-promoting-BLM-activist Chairman of the military joint chiefs, delayed. Of course, we now know that the deviant Milley was coordinating with Nancy Pelosi to hurt President Trump, and treasonously working behind Trump’s back. In a better society, quislings like the strange sodomy-promoting General Milley would be hung.

In a better society, Paul Gosar would be locked up in isolation for the rest of his life.
