Okey dokey, I don’t know what’s going on with this and don’t know how common this is, but something’s going on.
“The Biden White House has spent months trying to make ‘Bidenomics’ work. But as the general election campaign begins, the president’s team is rolling out something a little different: an economic argument that tries to frame former President Donald Trump as the candidate of corporate tax cuts and Biden as a scourge of the ultra-wealthy,” Politico reports.
Quotations from several of America’s greatest statesmen:
Franklin Delano Roosevelt - “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.”
John Fitzgerald Kennedy - “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”
Donald John Trump - “When there’s a crash, I hope it’s going to be during this next 12 months.”

That’s very uncommon. Basically, a federal grand jury has been empaneled - presumably in DC, but could be elsewhere - and the investigation that is related to this grand jury requires specific documents created by the House of Representatives. This is a brown-pants moment for our insurrectionist friends in the House, who will no doubt try to quash the subpoena rather than fulfill it.

Sean Hannity used this song as intro music for years. Maybe he still does.
But it’s WOKE AS FUCK.
Is it a sin to beat off to this? Asking for a friend.
A poster of Christ to promote Easter week in Seville has drawn a sharp backlash from Spanish ultra-conservatives, who denounced it as “effeminate” and “offensive” to Roman Catholics.
Designed by Seville artist Salustiano Garcia, the poster shows Christ after his resurrection from the dead, stood semi-naked in front of a blood-red background, with the lower part of his body covered by a white cloth.
It shows “the radiant side of Holy Week” in the “purest style of this prestigious painter,” said the Council of Brotherhoods and Guilds which organises the main Easter week events in the southern city.
In a social media backlash, however, many people denounced the poster as “sexualised”.
“It’s absolutely shameful and an aberration,” wrote the ultra-conservative Catholic IPSE, which says it fosters “respect for Christian symbols” and is active in opposing abortion.
The image portrayed Christ as “effeminate” and “camp”, it said, demanding a public apology from the artist for a poster that was not in the spirit of Holy Week.

Arrested years ago for marijuana, Christopher M. McClinton sleeps in an Alabama prison at night. He spends his days working at a fast food restaurant, slinging fries and milkshakes in a small town near the Gulf.
The state keeps about 40% of each of his paychecks. And the state will not grant him parole.

One question is which branch of government attorney is going to represent the Sergeant at Arms/Custodian of Record prior to testimony and documents being presented to the Federal Grand Jury.
I’ve testified before a Federal Grand Jury as an office of the court so I’m aware that counsel is not allowed within the GJ chambers. But my office retained counsel to be available on site should any questions occur outside the scope of my testimony, at which point I would step outside to obtain advise of counsel.
Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva has been retroactively disqualified from the 2022 Olympics following a two-year investigation, according to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland.Valieva violated anti-doping regulations, and she received a four-year ban retroactive to Dec. 25, 2021.
Starting the ban on that date voids Valieva’s results from the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and most notably the team figure skating competition on Feb. 7, 2022.
The Russian team, including Valieva, won the event, with the United States finishing second and Japan finishing third.
Her disqualification should now give the United States another gold medal from the event, while also awarding fourth-place Canada a bronze medal.

Might even be able to shift all authoritarians to a parallel Earth, but that creates another problem, rescuing people who give up authoritarianism when they see what an entirely authoritarian planet produces. So many challenges.
So part of the Biden economic recovery plan passed in 2021 was the Affordable Connectivity Program.
ACP was intended to help bridge the digital divide and offered low income people monthly discounts on internet service ($30 standard, $75 for those on Tribal lands).
The bill included what at the time was believed to be enough funding for five years, but, due to more widespread enrollment in the program than expected, it will run out of money in approximately 90 days unless Congress passes an extension.
And your friendly neighborhood Republicans are doing all they can to make sure that doesn’t happen. They think ACP is a failure because a decent portion of enrollees already had internet service beforehand and the program did not achieve its goal of connecting the unconnected.
So millions of people will start paying more for Internet in April unless something changes. The FCC is suspending new enrollments in about a week.

re: #101 Eclectic Cyborg
Yeah, Cox sent out an email about the ACP running out of money.
Internet connections are expensive in the US because the legacy cable companies and media companies want the lucrative cash flow that existed in the old days of cable TV.
High speed internet connections are much less expensive in many other countries.
People buying traditional cable packages are plummeting in numbers. Traditional cable companies like Cox thus have to make money on internet connections and smartphone bundles.
All the cable companies don’t care from where the money comes - they gladly will take government payments.
Just as long as they can still charge high fees for internet connections.
Cox for example charges $90/mo. for my 350Mb connection. (My old modem doesn’t go that high… but Cox charges me anyway.)
It’s been quite a while since I lived in Japan, but even back then my high speed internet to the apartment was like $15/mo.
I suspect the US government could provide high speed internet to every household (other than those in the deeply remote areas of wilderness) for about $10/mo.
100M households * $10/mo = $1B/mo.
That’d be considerably less than what Comcast, Cox, etc. bring in.
And for those in remote locations: it is likely that most of rural America could be eventually connected, it’d just take time.
But efficiency in society is bad for business.
It’s better to make money today than build a better economy for tomorrow.
All that matters is the next quarterly report.

And universal healthcare is a human right. To deny the service to poor and under served Americans is a yoke that will pull down the ability to prosper and grow.

I was in a Trader Joe’s once with my dad and I was not impressed with it. A few years ago I was going to shop at a Trader Joe’s because it was near my credit union but there was a line to get into the place and they only allowed 10 people in at a time. There was an incoming snow storm and folks were stocking up. I ended up at DiBruno’s getting all of my food there including a dozen eggs. Someone said Trader Joe’s ran out of eggs.

I prefer Wegmans to Trader Joes, but the closest Wegmans to my current location is about 2-3 hours away. The local major chain (Giant Eagle) is OK, but not as good. I like Trader Joes for a few items and trying something new every so often, but never used them for the majority of my shopping. Even when living in Center City when one was six blocks away.
re: #124 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)
I like Wegman’s too but the closest one is in King of Prussia. Since my local supermarket is less than a mile I go to the local Acme.
Used to get Thanksgiving turkeys from TJs. They were very good. But then one year I decided to give my busineee to the local poultry farm. More $ but worth it.

Still remember when I lived in Pittsburgh when Kroger shut down in 1982 instead of negotiating with the Union.
Dad and Mom took their business to Thorofare, Shop & Save & Giant Eagle, Golden Dawn & several IGA stores.

‘Our side’ has all kinds of people in it. I still don’t trust ‘Occupy Democrats’, among way too many others. I have to make an effort to get rid of a suspicion (or a grudge).

When I was living in Center City I was getting out to West Chester or King of Prussia every week or two. So stopping in a Wegmans for staples was pretty simple to do. Once I was out in Paoli there was a Wegmans just down US-30 a few miles in Malvern. Also a Trader Joes about the same distance north just before I would get to King of Prussia.

The closest one to me is a 9hr 45min drive.

I personally get annoyed at “ended”, “destroyed”, “eviscerated”, in describing things that don’t actually do anything. I would so love that Greene’s argument was destroyed by Hunter’s action but she just keeps on making it.

And then when things DO get destroyed, they say ‘decimated’ (reduced by a tenth).

Personally, I told my kid that while thunderstorms are pretty intense, we have multiple ways to get through them, including good construction on home, and grounded electrical systems, and that, if we needed to, we are prepared to deal with any issues. Plus, it is pretty awesome that something with that much power can exist.
Not only did he sleep much better, he also spent a couple of years learning meteorology. Friends of ours sent us a video of him lecturing some adults at the science museum in the weather section during that time.

re: #21 Backwoods Sleuth
No doubt that it’s related to January 6.
FWIW:
Paul D. Irving, the former House sergeant-at-arms who resigned the day after the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, recently provided testimony to the select committee investigating the Capitol attack, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Irving was one of four top security officials on the Capitol Police Board responsible for protecting the Capitol and has been heavily criticized for not adequately preparing for Jan. 6.
There was a substantial delay in the National Guard being deployed to quell the pro-Donald Trump rioters, a problem that drew particular scrutiny on the inefficient way the board functioned in that scenario. That problem played out last year in a Senate hearing reviewing the attack when Irving and Steven Sund, the Capitol Police chief during the insurrection, gave conflicting accounts on when Sund asked Irving — and Irving’s counterpart in the Senate, Michael Stenger — for the National Guard to help during the attack.
Sund testified to the Senate panel that by 1:09 p.m. on the afternoon of the riot, he notified both Irving and Stenger of the department’s need for a state of emergency declaration and National Guard troops, which was not approved by the Capitol Police Board until after 2 p.m. Irving said he did not recall getting a request for the National Guard until shortly after 2 p.m.

so far i haven’t minded. I watched an episode of the wild wild west, and there was a 30 second one at the front and then a couple of 15 second ones, not at obnoxious spots, during the 50 minute show. I may add it by the month if something comes on that I want to binge and feel like 3 bucks wouldn’t be a bad trade-off.

The subpoena was announced on the House floor.
re: #115 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus
I suspect the US government could provide high speed internet to every household (other than those in the deeply remote areas of wilderness) for about $10/mo.
100M households * $10/mo = $1B/mo.
That’d be considerably less than what Comcast, Cox, etc. bring in.
And for those in remote locations: it is likely that most of rural America could be eventually connected, it’d just take time.
But efficiency in society is bad for business.
It’s better to make money today than build a better economy for tomorrow.
All that matters is the next quarterly report.
this is central to what I have started calling Business School Brain Rot. So much of our economy has been broken by the short term thinking interpretation of shareholder supremacy.

Outgoing State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen (Digitalization) is quitting X because the platform does not comply with EU laws and does not appear to have any intention of doing so, she told nu.nl. “For me, it is done,” she told the newspaper.
On Monday, the State Secretary will post a final message on X, formerly Twitter, to announce her departure. Her account will continue to exist for the time being so that her past posts can be read back. But she is deleting the app from her phone, Van Huffelen said.
Van Huffelen said she gave X time to comply with new European laws to better protect citizens and create a fairer playing field for tech companies. But that has not happened. “That is also the line we have always chosen with Facebook,” she told nu.nl. “We speak to them if they do not comply with the rules. We then have a conversation to see whether they are working on it. But with [X owner Elon] Musk, that conversation never happened. He is not open to it.”
“Freedom of expression is allowed on any social media,” Van Huffelen said. “However, European law does ask these types of platforms to adhere to several rules. So that there is moderation, that there is no hate speech, and that it is a safe environment for everyone.”
The State Secretary stressed that her decision to quit X was personal and not the Dutch government’s general policy. The accounts of other Cabinet members remain active.

All I just got my California Sample Ballot. Looking at it and I see for both Senate races Steve Garvey is on the first line. Adam Schiff is on the bottom line for the short tern race With Barbara Lee and Katie Porter in the middle of both ballots.
For President…Grifter Marianne Williamson has the top line…and Joe Biden is in the bottom of the ballot…
27 people are on the ballot for the full Senate term and only 7 are on the ballot for the short term.
Only one initiative on the ballot involving mental health services and since I see Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association opposing it That means it’s OK and I’ll vote YES on that.
OJ prosecutor Christopher Darden is running for one of the Judicial offices…
