Disgusting News of the Day: Appeals Court Slashes Bond in Trump Civil Fraud Case to $175 Million

Law • Views: 11,795

We have two justice systems; one for the rich and privileged who get away with everything, and one for the people who die in solitary at Rikers because they can’t come up with $300 for a bond.

Former President Donald Trump picked up a win Monday when an appeals court lowered the bond in his civil fraud case to $175 million. Trump had been on the hook for a bond of over $460 million coming into the day. CBS News correspondent Errol Barnett has more.

He’d quickly go off on a tangent and be nonresponsive to either his own lawyers or prosecutors. He would be a liability to himself, potentially exposing him to further charges.

A competent lawyer would never let him testify on the stand. Because no one who knows Trump knows that he could be disciplined enough to stick to the questions asked and not go off on a tangent. Once he does, he’s fooked. Even if he stays on point, he’d prove his own guilt because he would end up admitting that he did the acts underlying the crimes, but claim that it’s not a crime (prosecutors - yeah, the acts and the law say it’s a crime, so thanks for admitting it, dumbass).

Even if he could somehow be convinced and trained not to admit to the crimes in question out loud on the witness stand, he would absolutely contradict himself in ways that would make his testimony in his own defense useless. The prosecution would have an easy job making him look like such an unreliable old fool, he couldn’t be trusted to tell you what he had for breakfast.

He is incapable of intentionally telling the truth. He only tells the truth by accident or if for some reason the truth in some way makes him look good. Any testimony by him will aid in his conviction and probably get him a perjury charge or two,

My conclusion?
We are in an honest-to-zog zombie apocalypse, surrounded by vicious, violent, braindead former humans who have lost all power of reason. The cause is not a physical virus but the mental virus of self-serving, propaganda driven conspiracy claims.
Items found in the last 5 minutes, at random: An article about the giant Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. One poster refuses to believe it was built by human beings in the 1920s, since “history always lies to us” and it would have to be much older than that since it was obviously built by wise ancients with now forgotten super-technology. Anyone who doubts that is a sheep who believes everything “the government” says.
Similarly, an overhead picture of a World War One German battleship (SMS Nassau if anyone cares). One poster insists the picture is fake because “they didn’t have drones back then.”
Radio controlled aircraft (“drones”) did exist within this ship’s lifetime (1908-1925) but that admittedly isn’t common knowledge.
It is, or at one time was, common knowledge that airplanes and dirigibles existed in that time, though, and the photo was taken from one of those.
I deliberately chose non-controversial examples to show just how far the brain rot has gone.

Putin seems to have just done another speech where he acknowledges ISIS as the perpetrator, but insinuates that Ukraine contracted ISIS to do the attack

(or that whoever makes Ukraine fight Russia is also behind the ISIS attack)
Again typical UA speak, “fight to the last ukrainian” “carry out washingtons command” Nazi references, claims of corruption…

Vladimir Putin about the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall and SVO:
“We know that the terrorist attack was carried out by radical Islamists. We are interested in who the customer is.
“The terrorist attack can only be a link for those who have been fighting us with the hands of the Kyiv regime since 2014.” And the Nazis never hesitated to use the dirtiest methods. Especially now that their counteroffensive has failed. The goal is to show that all is not lost for the Kyiv regime. We need to follow Western curators and fight to the last Ukrainian, and also create something like the Hitler Youth in a new edition.
“Despite the general pain, the investigation must proceed objectively and without bias.
— The United States, through various channels, is trying to convince everyone that there is supposedly no Kyiv trace in the bloody terrorist attack in Crocus, that it is the banned ISIS.
“We need to answer the question why the terrorists tried to go to Ukraine after committing the crime and who was waiting for them there.
— Russian society, against the backdrop of the terrorist attack in Crocus, showed real cohesion and solidarity.

As I noted in the dead thread, it’s disappointing that the App Div reduced the amount that Trump had to put up in bond, and stayed enforcement of the other Trump penalties, but he’s got 10 days to put up the $175 million, and it’s not clear he can manage that either.

The special master gets to review all those financial terms too.

It’s not clear he can come up with the money, or conclude sales to raise that money in the time allotted.

And the disgorgement sum of $465 million, plus interest/fees still applies, though that too could get reduced on appeal. He’s still facing a reckoning and his businesses are going through some things. It’s not the death sentence it should have been.

That being said, I think he might be able to do that, but that’s all gonna pass under the watchful eye of Barbara Jones, so Trump’s ability to pull off his typical financial shenanigans is going to be a lot more limited than it would’ve been in the past.

And with that, time for me to call it a day. Have a good one, Lizards and stay healthy.

That’s a very interesting point!

There are a number of historians who concluded that the US Civil War started because a railroad line between Georgia and South Carolina opened up in 1860.

The historians’ thinking goes:

There had been a number of South Carolina initiatives to secede from the Union before 1861. But South Carolina, feeling isolated, had always backed down.

But in the winter of 1860, a lot of Georgia legislators and other influential folks visited South Carolina leaders during the Christmas break. The result was that South Carolina no longer felt isolated.

It’s almost like some in Israel want a regional war.

This is a redistribution process: the state legitimizes land taking and the new owners are incentivized to keep the state operating in the same parameters. This is not just engineering the West Bank out of existence bit by bit, but also creating an Israeli bloc that politically and culturally benefits from a political administration that ignores international law and actively uses the coercive force of the state to reward participation.

The likely intention is not a war but to hold as much as possible before they’re forced to the table, with the distant ideal being you just get…everything…but, much like South Africa there comes a point where the pressure is too great so they just gel what they hold. The shit that’s already stolen often can be presented as fait accompli; there’s a bunch of countries where the good land is still held by British people or institutions because kicking out the Empire didn’t change the underlying notions of ownership the world views as normal.

Trans youth will no longer be prescribed puberty blockers, NHS England says

(from the 12th)

Puberty blockers solve the moral panic about kids with wrong-bodies being dangerous to their peers, but it does so in a way that keeps the window of transition open, and is therefore unacceptable to people that believe, implicitly or explicitly, that people’s bodies are not their own.

Kids have to become what their parents want, unless their parents are too weird, in which case kids have to become what “normal” third parties want.

Must like abortion access, the modern synthesis of how to control others involves demolishing all of the options, then declaring that there was no other choice. We’re winding back to the old atrocities of eugenics, but mediating layers of casuistry.

Somewhere in here there’s an estimate being made of the Cold-War origin of the US support of Israel as a means of projecting force across ME.

The gambit is that the US is still more afraid of Iran and Russia than anything Israel can do in Palestine, and that our other MENA allies have limited strategic functionality…willing to be bases but not field a proper army of their own.

You can see a similar gauntlet being dropped by the KSA: they’ve got oil and money and clout that we need to shift things in the Sunni parts of the MENA, just like they’ve done since WW2, and both their internal and external activities are less important than their strategic function for US foreign interests. That’s…worked out just fine for them as a wager; nobody’s talking about their bombing of Yemen and the Khashoggi murder is in the rear view mirror.

What we’re watching is satellite nations’ ruling classes scenting an advantageous shift in the imperial center and trying to see what value they can extract: they already have license by virtue of being, effectively, enforcers in a US world order, but as internal US politics show imperial decline kicking in, their position as middlemen of the status quo becomes more and more leverage-able. They’re scraping whatever they can scrape and super excited for the next elected American that will simply announce that rights and laws—the bare minimum of “liberal international order” that exists—is secondary to power.

One time my son bought me airline ticket to fly to Denver out of Reagan AP in DC. My son had bought a new house, and it didn’t show up on Apple maps, so I had to switch to Goggle maps while there. Forgot about that, and when I flew back, I was in my car leaving, I tried to pull up my trip TO Reagan, and got confused, and the traffic in that airport is like 10 foot merge zones and a zillion signs.
In my confusion I turned onto I-395 and crossed the Potomac right into bumper to bumper insanity. Took a bit of wrangling to find a spot to pull over and sort it out.
Almost as much fun looking for the Throgs Neck Bridge after they changed the name to JFK bridge, which I was unaware of, out of LaGuardia.
