So what other laws enacted before a state actually became a state are waiting out there like dog turds hidden in the wet grass?

A person ridin’ a hoss into a saloon whilst shooting off pistols and yelling Yee Haw spends a night in the box.

Failin’ to doff one’s hat in the presence of the school marm spends a night in the box.

Wrasslin’ with a sportin’ gal and failin’ to pay for the poke spends the night in the box.

re: #206 Nerdy Fish

Especially since they have to know they have no shot here. Their defense basically hinges on him being treated as special because he used to be President of the United States, but so far, most courts (excepting the Calvinball Court) aren’t about to entertain that notion.

I have to disagree with this, in order for them to get the felony charges they have to prove the underlying felony, being that Stormy was paid off to affect the election, and not to hide it from his wife or just to generally protect his reputation. Proving intent is hard, that’s why John Edwards got off and the DoJ and FEC and previous manhattan DA chose not to bring charges. It is a Manhattan jury so I think he is more likely than not to be convicted, but it isn’t a slam dunk by any stretch.

re: #239 darthstar

Trump’s another 280 million dollars poorer so far today.

It’s not as though Truth Social was some real company that had a real value. Other social media companies have a real client base; Threads may not be worth much on its own but its parent Meta definitely has substantial assets, at least for now. Truth Social’s only purpose was to post Trump rants. X is the real Truth Social platform that promotes the voice of the Trump cult. Trump cult members who want visibility aren’t using the Trump platform — they all use X where they can engage with the opposition. If a Trumpster posts on Truth Social, they are silent to the larger community, because Truth Social made every effort to keep others off the site.

Could Elmo decide to buy Truth Social and incorporate it into his platform? It’s not as though any of those who own a share of his company would object to the acquisition and it’s not a major cost. That would provide Trump with a needed flow of funds and make him a real billionaire.

Over at one of my two primary photo websites we have a new member who’s an older fellow full of lots of… questions. I think he’s serious but he still comes across as more than a little bit trollish… Today’s moment was a pointless question “What’s the whole point of taking pictures?” Most of the others were trying to at least semi-seriously answer him. I wasn’t.

My reply was:

Why photograph? Because it’s an easier way to deal with the world than to drink a fifth (or smoke a lid for that matter) before noon on a day off.

And on a good day, I might even have something other than a hangover to upload to instagram.com

I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader to decide how serious this particular aesthetic philosophy is.

He does tempt me to nom a Delta 9 gummy though. Twit.

It’s from the Daily Mail, but looks like The Line - part of MBS’ ambitious megacity project - has run into difficulties.

Saudi Arabia has been forced to scale back its $1.5trillion plans for a 106-mile linear desert megacity, according to reports, in a humiliating climb down for the kingdom.

The Line - part of the country’s audacious and futuristic NEOM project - was meant to be home to around 1.5 million residents by the end of the decade, with plans to ultimately increase its full capacity to nine million people.

Now, according to people familiar with the project, the development will only stretch 1.5 miles and house fewer than 300,000 residents by 2030, according to a new report from Bloomberg citing sources close to the project and documents.

As a result of the reduction to the construction of The Line, at least one contractor has started dismissing workers it employs on the site, the publication has said.

This video from Adam Something humorously goes into why The Line, and NEOM, is a stupid idea.

Steve Deace just realized now that Trump was using him and his fellow Xtians….

‘Lied to us for decades’: Christian conservative uncorks Biblical rant on GOP

Christian conservative broadcaster Steve Deace is not at all happy with the way that former President Donald Trump and many Republicans have run away from the issue of abortion rights.

Writing on Twitter Wednesday, Deace accused the GOP of pulling a long con on anti-abortion voters in the United States, as he said that they used the anti-abortion cause to secure votes while then running away from the issue once it became politically unpopular.

“We thought Roe was a shibboleth of the damned for Democrats, but it was for both parties,” he argued. “For it also allowed Republicans by and large to lie to us for decades… Now that Republicans have a chance to show they are sincerely pro-life, and act on decades of speeches and promises, they are by and large punting and cowering — starting with the guy responsible for overturning Roe itself. Now plenty of our own teammates are also showing they’re fine sacrificing kids on the altar of personal convenience, just like all the single moms in the Democrat Party.”

Deace wasn’t just content to level charges of hypocrisy against the GOP, however — he also had a biblical warning for all of America that God might soon get fed up with us.

“Some of the harshest moments in the Scriptures stem from when we embrace the killing of children,” he said ominously. “The final straw for Israel was when the people went down into the Valley of Ben Hinnom and cast their babies into the fire for the demon Molech, setting the stage for their diaspora.”

He ended his angry tirade by informing America that it could not possibly win in a fight against God.

“We are playing a very dangerous game as a people,” he said. “A game we cannot win. Don’t say we weren’t warned.”

Lawyers, Guns & Money:

Trump makes mouth noises; media treat this as meaningful

Old habits, like democracies, die hard:

[CNN]:

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would not sign a federal abortion ban if one reached his desk were he to be elected in November.

It’s Trump’s firmest response to date on a national abortion ban. He has simultaneously claimed credit for appointing the Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade while distancing himself from some of the stricter efforts by Republicans across the country to limit the procedure, and on Monday, he called for the issue to be decided by the states.

“Would you sign a national abortion ban if Congress sent it to your desk?” Trump was asked by a reporter in Atlanta on Wednesday.

“No,” Trump said, shaking his head.

“You wouldn’t sign it?” the reporter asked.

“No,” Trump said again.

The notion of Trump having a “firm response,” in the sense that what he says on this issue should be treated as meaningful in some way, is an example of how the media simply can’t bring themselves to recognize that what Trump says simply has no informational value whatsoever in regard to his future behavior, and to think that it does is the most basic sort of category error. Trump will veto a national ban on abortion if and only if he considers it in his interest to do so at the time, and it’s difficult to impossible to imagine a situation in the future where this will be the case. So what he says now means, very literally, nothing at all.”

A couple comments about Three Body Problem Netflix series — ignore if you’re not watching or haven’t reached episode 4.

1. Evans communication with the San-ti was ridiculous. Why didn’t he just explain that we have stories or allegories that are not literally factual but are meant to entertain or instruct, but not deceive? They are not lies because the readers know that the events are not reality.

2. The San-ti seem like a malevolent version of the aliens in “Galaxy Quest”, who also took every story literally.

3. The weapon deployed was truly monstrous and I cannot believe that it would have been approved for use, even given the circumstances. Why weren’t Evans and the item he carried completely shredded into microscopic bits as was almost everything else on board the ship, rendering the attack useless?

Based on what we know… it’s not going to be a great time for Trump:

To try to prove their criminal hush money case against former President Donald Trump, prosecutors in New York are expected to rely on several witnesses who are or were part of Trump’s inner circle, including his longtime assistant, Rhona Graff, his former director of Oval Office operations, Madeleine Westerhout, and longtime trusted aide, Hope Hicks, sources familiar with the case told ABC News.

The sources said prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney’s office are also expected to call Deborah Tarasoff, who worked in the Trump Organization’s accounting department, and Jeffrey McConney, the Trump Organization’s former controller, as well as Trump’s former attorney and so-called “fixer,” Michael Cohen. McConney is also expected to testify in Trump’s defense, sources said.

He does tempt me to nom a Delta 9 gummy though. Twit.

Over at Ars Technica, that kind of behavior is called “JAQing off”.

Not sure how many other Traitors fans we have in here, but Australia season 2 was WILD.

Australia was such a roller coaster. I thought it was going to be the worst, displaying all the things that can go wrong, with a sociopath as a traitor and a bunch of dum dums as the Faithful. But watch it to the end. It is worth it. It may be the best.

Yeah but change is tough for some people. My grandfather was part of the greatest generation and passed in 2011. His entire adult life he referred to black people as “negroes” and Asian guys as “chinamen”.

He never did this to their faces and did not intend to be disrespectful when using the terms in conversation with other people. He was just simply using the terms he grew up using.

I never thought of him as a racist or a bad man. Maybe just someone a little behind the times.

Yeah, I’m not sure TBH how bodies would react to something like that. The ship as a whole was sliced into sizable layers. You can also see it in the hallway scenes somewhat.

Oh, Billy Dee…

I’m sorry, I respect you and sort of get what you’re trying to say (that actors should be willing to stretch and fully “become someone else” to play their parts), but I have to strenuously disagree about blackface: it wasn’t cool when Al Jolson did it, it wasn’t cool when Lawrence Olivier did it for his version of Othello in the 60s for stage and screen in the midst of the American civil rights and worldwide black independence struggles, and it sure as fuck ain’t kosher today.

There’s exceedingly-slim-to-none valid artistic reason for blackface (or yellowface [Warner Oland, Peter Lorre, Peter Ustinov, and Mickey Rooney, among others, have much to answer for there], redface [the most egregious and audacious example I can think of right now being Iron Eyes Cody], or brownface [right, Fisher Stevens?] in this day and age. Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder is only one of a few instances of blackface/brownface being used satirically to make a point that isn’t putridly awful that I can think of (right, Soul Man?), but, overall, it’s just not cool at all to do and it never really was.

He’s just trying to get the most votes this fall, under the assumption that he will be dictator-for-life and not have to worry about the future. I am sure that most anti-choice leaders understand the message and will get their base out — and the ones that don’t will be quietly reassured about Trump’s true intentions.

2 seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.

That was confusing.

There’s part 1 and part 2 of Season 1 on Netflix. Season 2 wasn’t released. Some episode guides incorrectly call part 2 “Season 2”

Netflix released the first season of Inside Job in two installments: the first 10 episodes, consisting of Part 1, debuted in October 2021, and the eight episodes of Part 2 premiered this past November.

re: #96 IngisKahn

I believe their orbit is too low for that.

Starlink satellites have to fly very low to reduce ping times for internet traffic. They’re built cheaply and mass produced, not to “space” standards because they’re not expected to last long in orbit and they will re-enter the atmosphere after a few years due to atmospheric drag.

What’s likely to be part of the creative accounting claims is that a lot of SpaceX commercial launches are to deliver Starlink constellations into orbit rather than earning revenue by making money outside the Musk empire’s walled garden.

The Starship project is a gaping hole in the SpaceX budget with lots of expenditure to date and no sales, just a few contracts for capability development from the US government and a highly inflated promise of profitability if and when they can actually carry out the sort of Starship launch cadence they’ve been promising. The problem is that there isn’t a large pent-up demand for launches that’s just been waiting for $100 a kilo FOB to LEO. There’s a lot of PowerPoint and wishful thinking but little in the way of actual promised payloads other than hundreds of Starlink satellites per Starship launch.
