So why is the rank of major higher than a lieutenant but a lieutenant general higher than a major general?

So it seems that the rank of “Major General” was once styled as “Sergeant Major General”, whereby a sergeant major is inferior in rank to a lieutenant.
I am the very model of a modern military insignia nerd…
