And I wish that James Cameron had directed Alita: Battle Angel himself, but I understand he was deeply involved in his Avatar sequels at that point. Apparently, Cameron is a huge fan of the manga series and had long planned to make a live-action film out of it.

That being said, Alita: Battle Angel is still a good flick, and one of the better live-action manga/anime adaptations out there.

Yeah, I’m never going to be able to quite forgive him for that one. The final product was good, but he’d been promising fans of the manga for years that all the work he was putting into making Avatar was basically prep work because Battle Angel was his goal and he wanted to develop the tech in order to do the movie “right.” And then Avatar drops, he goes quiet for a bit because of how popular it became, then says “Oh yeah, I’m not gonna have time to do Battle Angel because I’ll be working on Avatar sequels.”

Again, I like what eventually came out, but it still feels to me like he went for the cash grab.
