Video: James Cameron Reacts to the Sub Implosion: ‘I’m Struck by the Similarity of the Titanic Disaster Itself’

US News • Views: 17,716

YouTube

“Titanic” director James Cameron, who has explored the ship’s wreckage site himself, called the implosion of a submersible that vanished on a Titanic tour Sunday “quite surreal.”

All passengers are believed to be dead after a desperate dayslong search for the Titan, a 21-foot deep-sea vessel operated by OceanGate Expeditions. Coast Guard officials said during a news conference Thursday said debris found during the search for the vessel is consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber. #titanic #jamescameron

A remarkable remark Mr. Cameron made was that there had been accidents, yes, in this very niche diving world, but no one ever died. Until last Sunday. He was close friends with Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was onboard Titan, having known the man for 25 years.

Wow, right at the end he says the sub had dropped its ascent weights and they were trying to come up to the surface.

Oh God. Can you imagine the terror they must have gone through in those final moments? An alarm sounding in your ear, perhaps some signs of physical distress - creaking or groaning metal, the pulse of an approaching pressure wave? The captain trying to scramble while keeping calm for his customers, blowing the tanks, dropping the weights, giving the ascent everything he had in the vain hope that a miracle might happen?

The ascent weights are special weights attached to the sub that they can detach to increase their buoyancy in an emergency. Apparently it was too late.

There’s a Wikipedia article. While I can imagine it’s going to evolve quickly, one thing caught my eye: Previous dives took around 2 hours to get down to the wreck. Those poor people were near the sea floor, probably around 10,500 feet down, when everything suddenly went to hell. They never had a prayer of making it back up in time.

The families can’t sue this company because they all signed waivers, but this will probably put OceanGate Expeditions out of business. Which it should.

Thinking out loud.
Could it be that water began entering the sub and weights were dropped to ascend. Then, water flow increased quickly causing the air to pressurize sufficiently to explode the sub thus resulting in the debris field.

We tried last night. They never took the tarp off the field and waited over 2 hours to finally call a rainout…..

I made a mistake earlier; we saw the Phils at Fenway two years ago. This’ll be my first Citizens Bank Park game in about three years, weather permitting.

I was debating about taking the trains over, but if we go what you went through, it might be slightly easier to get home if we drive. Since they’re playing the Mets, the Broad Street Subway might be even more packed than usual.

Carbon fiber. When it goes, it really goes.

The Völkl ski company had a carbon fiber ski called Werks. It skied nice ‘n’ strong, like a good Völkl ski should, but I saw catastrophic failures too, skis breaking right in half, cracks forming from tip to tail. I’ve never seen more skis go back to a company for warranty. I soured on carbon fiber skis after those few seasons selling them in Beaver Creek.

Could it be that water began entering the sub and weights were dropped to ascend. Then, water flow increased quickly causing the air to pressurize sufficiently to explode the sub thus resulting in the debris field.

At the depth they were reportedly at when contact ceased (roughly two miles down), the water pressure would be about 300 atmospheres or over 4000 psi; a failure of the pressure vessel at that depth would compact everything to the volume of a baseball, while superheating the air inside to a temperature hotter than the surface of the sun, before shredding and scattering what didn’t burn to a crisp or get turned into Jell-O into the debris field that was found.

Something else may have happened to get them to abort and attempt an ascent, we’ll never know, but one thing’s certain: once the pressure vessel failed within a fraction of a second from still intact to completely destroyed, it’s most likely Rush and his passengers never felt a thing before being turned into burnt jam.

That’s the last tooth on that side on top; I hope they can save it. I haven’t been able to eat much in solid food over the last couple days.

Mrs. Fish asked if there was any kind of a distress signal, which we know there wasn’t. That raises the thought that maybe all the captain had time to do was attempt an ascent. So “last minutes,” probably not - it still seems like things went to pot pretty quick.

Trump in high heels Amanda Chase alleges voter fraud causing her to lose her Virginia State Senate seat…then she backs off…just a tad…

‘We don’t know’: Notorious Virginia election fraud conspiracist not sure there was actual election fraud

A day after putting out a press release claiming there were hundreds of “illegal votes” cast in Chesterfield County, Sen. Amanda Chase, R-Chesterfield, acknowledged she’s not sure if any election fraud actually happened.

One of the most prominent spreaders of election conspiracy theories in Virginia politics, Chase appeared to lose a close three-way GOP primary to former Republican senator Glen Sturtevant. She is not conceding defeat and says she’s talking to lawyers and raising money for a possible legal challenge.

The basis for a potential lawsuit, Chase said in an interview Thursday, is that her campaign wasn’t present when Chesterfield ballot scanning machines used for early voting were tested for accuracy and certified.

“We weren’t there to witness it,” Chase said. “So was there fraud? We don’t know. We don’t know because we weren’t there.”

If Aaron Sorkin was writing current affairs. My theory that would be a lot of fun in the movie.

TL:DR My theory - the DOJ has really awful material from a Bedmister search. It wpuld not like these to be known to be out in the wild. So, instead of indicting Trump they will use these as leverage to make Trump behave in the Florida trial.

The Mar-a-Lago indictment mentions transporting boxes of documents to Bedminster but does not charge them with that, even though they could. Why?

What if the FBI actually did search Bedminster? The only way we would know is if Trump told us. Why wouldn’t he? Because these were his best of the best, the ones he really knew he could sell and also know he could be in big trouble over. If he kept his mouth shut no one would realize before the DOJ indicted him in New Jersey. Maybe he could get elected and pardon himself.

So why have they not indicted him in NJ? Well, these would be really sensitive materials. Traitor stuff. The DOJ would really not like them to even be known were out there much less dealt with in an open court. even a realtively closed one. So, they are using them as levarage over Trump.

Let the Florida trial proceed without funny stiff and take the consequences. Don’t play ball and we indict you in NJ.

It would be nice. I give it about a 25% chance of being right.

“…With her crew, Klemp rescued over 1,000 migrants that were in risk of drowning while crossing the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe. Now she has been charged in Sicily for “assisting in illegal immigration,” as part of far-right Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini’s crackdown on migration.

“Italy’s fascists are using this case as a showcase to deter others from aiding migrants,” international analyst and professor Rula Jebreal said on Twitter, adding that “they would prefer to let people drown in the Mediterranean.”

Since assuming office, the far-right PM has sought to put a stop to migrant rescue ships docking on Italian shores and allowing refugees to disembark, under the banner of “Italy First.” On April 2019, he refused for another Sea Watch ship to dock in Italy, the vessel had saved 12 women, an 11-month-old girl and a 6-year-old boy among the group of migrants.

However, as the captain explains her actions and those of other rescue boats in the Mediterranean are completely legal and protected by the 1982 United Nations (U.N.) Law of the Sea.

According to its article 98, “every state shall require the master of a ship” to “render assistance to any person found at sea in danger of being lost” and “proceed with all possible speed to the rescue of persons in distress.”

For every 100 hours of operation, it needs an inch-by-inch inspection by a specialist Certified Inspector. If you’re even a few hours late with your inspection, it invalidates your airworthiness certificate.

The amateur sub reminded me of the Schlitterbahn waterparks. I googled it, and see that the murder and manslaughter charges were dropped.

Kansas City, Kansas — A judge dismissed criminal charges Friday against a Kansas water park owner and the designer of a 17-story slide on which a 10-year-old boy was decapitated in 2016. Wyandotte County Judge Robert Burns cited improper evidence in dropping second-degree murder charges against Schlitterbahn owner Jeff Henry, designer John Schooley, and general contractor Henry and Sons Construction Co.

The judge also dismissed an involuntary manslaughter charge against operations manager Tyler Miles, The Kansas City Star reported.

They were charged after Caleb Schwab died while riding the waterslide, which was marketed as the world’s tallest slide.

“The court has grave doubts as to whether the irregularities and improprieties improperly influenced the grand jury and ultimately bolstered its decision to indict these defendants,” Judge Robert Burns said. “Quite simply, these defendants were not afforded the due process protections and fundamental fairness Kansas law requires.”

Wow, right at the end he says the sub had dropped its ascent weights and they were trying to come up to the surface.

That is just speculation. The Titan lost communication with the surface less than 2 hours after departure and there is no way of knowing what the occupants did after that happened.

Maybe they can tell that the weights weren’t present at the implosion by their condition.
If so, it seems like they went through a minute of panic, then died so suddenly they couldn’t experience it.

It’s still so much better than the nightmare freezing or suffocating scenarios people had going through their heads.

Virginia acquits school spokesman who was targeted by Glen Youngkin in campaign for governor

rawstory.com

A longtime spokesperson for a school district that had been attacked by Gov. Glenn Youngkin in the 2021 gubernatorial campaign was acquitted today of a perjury charge brought by Virginia’s Republican attorney general at Youngkin’s request.

“The jury took only about two hours to deliberate before acquitting Loudoun County Public Schools Public Information Officer Wayde Byard on the sole perjury count lodged against him by a special grand jury,” the Associated Press reported.

“The perjury case was the first prosecution to go to trial from the special grand jury’s probe, commissioned by Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares at the request of Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin.”

Both Youngkin and Miyares “had blasted Loudoun County schools during their runs for office in 2021 that featured calls for more parental control over education,” the Washington Post reported.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s trial on charges of abuse of political power and misuse of public media began in the country’s highest electoral court on Thursday in Brasilia.

The charges stem from a meeting Bolsonaro held with foreign diplomats in July 2022, in which he is accused of spreading false information about Brazil’s electoral system and bringing its credibility into question - a strategy the former president used in his reelection campaign.

If found guilty, Bolsonaro could be ruled ineligible to run for public office for up to eight years.

In Thursday’s court session, a report from Judge Benedito Gonçalves on the case was read aloud and both sides presented their arguments. The trial has now been adjourned until next week. Proceedings could be extended by months if any of the judges request more information.

And I wish that James Cameron had directed Alita: Battle Angel himself, but I understand he was deeply involved in his Avatar sequels at that point. Apparently, Cameron is a huge fan of the manga series and had long planned to make a live-action film out of it.

Yeah, I’m never going to be able to quite forgive him for that one. The final product was good, but he’d been promising fans of the manga for years that all the work he was putting into making Avatar was basically prep work because Battle Angel was his goal and he wanted to develop the tech in order to do the movie “right.” And then Avatar drops, he goes quiet for a bit because of how popular it became, then says “Oh yeah, I’m not gonna have time to do Battle Angel because I’ll be working on Avatar sequels.”

Again, I like what eventually came out, but it still feels to me like he went for the cash grab.

True, but it’s just been the spin since the news initially broke and I was going with it. This whole mess has the very strong whiff of being about money, all the bragging about dodging regulation in the name of “innovation” sounding more like excuse-making by a man desperate to cover the investment he was losing with the whole “tourism” bit. To give an example, the price per seat doubled from the $102,000 originally offered (cost of a 1st class berth aboard Titanic adjusted for inflation) to $250,000 in less than a year.

Twitter has agreed to comply with tough new EU laws on fake news, Russian propaganda and online crime after a team of officials from the European Commission entered its headquarters to stress test its capacity to operate legally in Europe.

The move came just weeks after Elon Musk, Twitter’s owner, quit the bloc’s voluntary code of practice on disinformation.

In the first exercise of its kind, EU officials were allowed into the company’s headquarters on Thursday to carry out a mock exercise with Twitter staff to test its controls on Russian propaganda, fake news and criminal activity including child sexual exploitation.

I posted this yesterday about the Titan submersible.

re: #385 Shropshire Slasher

Unfortunate news for the families of the submersible, maybe they have a recording of the implosion if this is still operational.

The Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS) was a submarine detection system based on passive sonar developed by the United States Navy to track Soviet submarines. The system’s true nature was classified with the name and acronym SOSUS themselves classified. The unclassified name Project Caesar was used to cover the installation of the system and a cover story developed regarding the shore stations, identified only as a Naval Facility (NAVFAC), being for oceanographic research. In 1985, as the fixed bottom arrays were supplemented by the mobile Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System (SURTASS) and other new systems were coming on line, the name itself changed to Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS). The commands and personnel were covered by the “oceanographic” term until 1991 when the mission was declassified. As a result, the commands, Oceanographic System Atlantic and Oceanographic System Pacific became Undersea Surveillance Atlantic and Undersea Surveillance Pacific, and personnel were able to wear insignia reflecting the mission.

The burglar fired off a blowtorch to melt the plastic of the locked cases inside a Queens Walgreens Friday before grabbing several boxes and shoving them into his bag, according to footage making the rounds on social media.

The alleged thief stole about $448 worth of skin care products from the East Elmhurst store, located at 93-12 Astoria Blvd., as other shoppers and employees stood by silently filming the wild act on their phones, according to cops and the video.

yes. sadly, I think Jesse came back once for a meal, and then I spooked her by getting up from my chair (didn’t know she was in the kitchen) and out the door she fled again. I’m trying not to take it personally. After all, she’s a cat, so she’s got a brain the size of a walnut, but it does irritate the piss out of me that the cat spent 2 1/2 years sleeping with me, and one bad experience with the deck washers has left her too shattered to repair the breech between us. The families can’t sue this company because they all signed waivers, but this will probably put OceanGate Expeditions out of business. Which it should.

The families can still sue. Will they win? That’s the better question.

They might still be able to get past the initial hurdles because of gross negligence on the part of the company (using inferior materials, cobbling things together, knowing they had failures in past, and continued doing the same thing without changing process) - that they knew that they were engaging in malfeasance and continued to operate in this fashion anyways.

Think of it in the same way that you go to an amusement park and there’s a liability waiver on the ticket. If a park ride malfunctions and you’re injured, you can still sue, because the ride was within the company’s control and they failed to maintain it properly, or there was gross negligence or malfeasance involved.

In the case of an amusement park you can investigate the ride in question, in this case, much of the evidence is lying at the bottom of the North Atlantic

Put another way, the company can try to disclaim all the liability it likes with waivers, contracts, etc. The law, however, says that you don’t get a free pass to say, “I do what I want,” and get away with it.

That’s certainly an angle I could see a lawyer for one of the families trying to go for, that the company lied (even if it was a lie of omission) about the dangers involved, perhaps telling the passengers that it was “certified” to operate at the depths involved when it had not been submitted at any point in its construction to a regulatory body for such certification.

I doubt that Habba could handle a Trump direct, let alone Smith crossing Trump.

She’s a real estate lawyer out of her depth. She’s not a criminal lawyer, and she’s not a national security lawyer who knows how to deal with the Espionage Act and national security law that has specific rules in place (like the requirement to get clearances to even see the evidence that Trump claims was declassified - which undercuts his public arguments that he could just declassify anything in his possession by thinking about it).

Harris moves into second place for most Senate tiebreaking votes in history

She needs one more to tie John C. Calhoun and 2 more to take the lead. This would make her the most impostant VP in history wrt getting the President’s agenda passed.

And she will easily break the record. Calhoun took 7 years to accumulate 31. While Harris has 30 in less than 3.

We can thank Manchin for this, who voted with the Republicans., He voted agaist a Biden nominee.

And curiously, Joe Biden is the only VP on record to serve two full terms without ever having to cast a tiebreaker. Simpler times…

Just because they signed waivers doesn’t mean they can’t sue. “The waiver itself was invalid.” “It was signed under duress/not given enough time to consider, etc.” To be honest, OceanGate Expeditions probably has nothing, and I doubt they had insurance on their operation, being it was inherently hazardous, but I’m sure some lawyer, somewhere will find a reason to sue.

Biden to sign XO expanding access to contraception:

Klein said the order directs federal departments to consider requiring private insurers to offer expanded contraception options under the Affordable Care Act such as by covering more than one product and streamlining the process for obtaining care.

Biden’s order comes as reproductive rights advocates say rising barriers are leaving millions of women without easy access to contraception.

Contraceptives have been in focus since the Supreme Court on June 24 of last year overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are expected to make remarks on Friday marking the one-year anniversary of the landmark decision, Klein said.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday breathed new life into a Biden administration policy that will set immigration enforcement priorities by focusing on public safety threats.

The justices, in a 8-1 vote, overturned a Texas-based federal judge’s ruling in June of last year that blocked the policy nationwide. It had previously been in effect for less than a year.

Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote for the majority that the challengers did not have legal standing to sue over the plan, which focused on the longstanding discretion that federal officials have in enforcing laws.

PLOVER, Wis. (WSAW) — The former Plover youth pastor charged with eight counts including child sexual assault is scheduled to reach a plea deal in his case, avoiding a jury trial.

Jordan Huffman, 52, was arrested last August in Florida. Court documents state the alleged victim said the crimes began in 2017 when the victim was 12 years old. Authorities were told Huffman was working as a youth pastor at Woodlands Church in Plover when he was contacted to mentor the victim. The incidents were reported by the alleged victim’s father in June. Court documents stated the assaults happened more than a dozen times over a two-year span.

The alleged victim stated that nothing sexual in nature had occurred at Woodlands Church, but that some assaults happened in Huffman’s office at his next place of employment, Forest Lakes District in Stevens Point.

A plea hearing is scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m. in Portage County Circuit Court.

I’ve seen more than a few people claiming that it took a year for the DOJ to begin investigating and prosecuting for 1/6.

Well, yeah. Let’s think about the timeline. Biden had to wait months before the GOP allowed the Garland nomination to go through. The GOP then held up the DC federal attorney until the end of October, which meant that it took almost 10 months to get the two key roles filled. It took even longer as other key positions in the DOJ were held by Trump holdovers until Biden nominations could get confirmed.

That slowed things considerably.

Trump’s holdovers continued the politicization and covering for Trump, while Biden’s team was trying to ramp up the prosecutions.

re: #171 lawhawk

I think another issue would be whether the waiver was actually “knowing”. You can put all the risk language in the waiver you want, but if there was no way for passengers to know the sub was only designed for a depth of, say, 2000 meters, and that was expressly mentioned in the waiver, the waiver doesn’t mean shit.

When you look at what seems to be a spike in rapes and sexual assaults in churches of every denomination, it seems like it came out of nowhere.

This is similar to the sudden spike in left-handedness.

Some local pastor is accused of raping children, the church covers it up to protect its “reputation.” If he’s arrested, then it gets reported in local media.

This spike in child rapes coincides with the rise of the Internet, first Usenet (where they were also tracked) and now the World Wide Web.

It’s not that there’s a spike. It’s now you can learn about how it was always in every denomination (even the UU Church).

Speaking of the Unitarian-Universalits, they’ve also had repeated “closed door” commissions which looked into accusations of clergy rape.

Reforms Take Aim at Clergy Misconduct (UU World, Winter 2014)

The article describes all the misconduct in that church up to that point. That was not the first because they had another “closed door” commission in 2010.

UU World (now digitised) of course only went to people within the church who subscribed to it, and like other churches the UUs were concerned with their reputation, so everything went under the carpet.

Oh wait, and they reported on it again in 2018.

i agree wit hthat partially

when i was actively teaching scuba, my liability release, which I stole, was something like this:

WHATEVER happens to you when you willingly go underwater is COMPLETELY and ENTIRELY your own responsibility!
If you cannot accept this responsibility, stay out of the water!

i’d explain how to apply this thinking to the first water session - ie an uncertified student who is ‘only’ going to breath under 3 feet of water for the first time.

now this sub adventure was not a ride at disney and should not have been promoted as anything so innocuous

you have to (ought to) do some sort of research to know if you’re accepting an accurate risk willingly.

it’s different than being a self sufficient scuba diver because of the nature of it being a sub and you’re mostly just ‘riding along’.

do you understand what could happen, what you could be called on to do to save yourself and others, etc.

otherwise you’re just a what? guinea pig? sheep?

Also known as Apollyon, Abaddon makes an appearance in the last book of the New Testament: Revelation (Revelation 9:11). The name means destruction, so you can hazard a pretty good guess as to whether this being is good or bad.

Although Satan has gone by many names, Apollyon is not one of them. Abaddon appears to be a demon who works under him who rules an Abyss full of locusts that will arrive onstage during the Final Days. The locusts will bite, sting, or cause pain to those who do not believe in Jesus Christ.

And what happens if he skips? What is the penalty when those signing cannot afford the bail? Are they forced to declare bankruptcy? Or is the bail bondsman out of luck?

Per what I’ve read so far in LGF, it’s my impression this bail is a direct transaction between the Santos family and the court.

In my experience, no bail bondsman is going to post a $500K bail without supporting assets to cover his liability.

Is Ben Shapiro really that big of an idiot, or does he just play one on the Internet?

If I’d bother responding to his nonsense, I’d ask him a simple question: if he were in, and survived, say, a shipwreck or plane crash in a remote area, what would be his attitude towards “institutional credibility” re search and rescue operations? Or would he be OK with authorities just saying, “screw it, they’re probably dead, let’s go home“….?

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Russia’s Wagner mercenary outfit, said in a bombshell video that Russia did not face an imminent security threat to justify its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Moscow Times reports.

Said Prigozhin: “The Armed Forces of Ukraine were not going to attack Russia with the NATO bloc. The Russian Defense Ministry is deceiving the public and the president.”

Midland HS coach arrested in Lubbock, placed on leave by MISD

Hampton was one of 24 arrested in Lubbock Police Department’s human trafficking operation. According to LPD, 24 arrests were made over the course of a 2 day operation on June 19th and 20th.
Douglas was arrested for Solicitation Prostitution. More information about the operation can be found on LPD’s Facebook page.

It seems to be some kind of Texas police rule that at least one high school coach has to be included in every human trafficking roundup.

Important to note that Hillary Clinton had, and still has, a bit of a public perception problem. Despite the fact that she’s very clearly not guilty of any of the charges that have been leveled at her, enough people believe she is that it may have materially affected the number of people who said, “I’ll never vote for Trump, but I’m not going to vote for HER, either.”

This cat is just insatiably curious. I flushed the toilet and she was immediately looking over the toilet seat to examine how all of that worked. She of course comes in to keep an eye on me when I’m sitting in there. It does make things a little stressful. It’s like trying to take a crap while security with an earpiece is outside the stall sending reports. “Olympus has dropped one. repeat, Olympus has dropped one.”

Better than my one cat who’d wait until I was sitting there and then would come and put one of her own into the litter box right there. And then just walk out without doing the usual cat thing of at least trying to bury it.

Chat Noir, on the other hand, would spend 5-10 minutes attempting to scrape litter into place from even outside of the litter box.
