My vote for best B&W film is split between Fail-Safe and Doctor Strangelove. The former was produced right around the same time as Kubrickβs film. It was a classic film, playing the risks of nuclear war completely straight. But it lost the zeitgeist to Kubrick.
Nevertheless, the film was so well remembered that Noah Wylie got CBS to produce a live remake (!!!) one summer. It was a very good production.
Fail Safe is great, one of those films I go searching for every few years. Along with The Bedford Incident
