Maybe the NFL needs a grotesque, on the field death to convince them that safety is paramount. (I’m referring to Dale Earnhardt’s death in 2001.)

From what I recall, Dale Sr.’s death was entirely avoidable; the HANS device, which was made mandatory for all drivers following the accident, was “optional and highly recommended” by the racing league at the time, but Dale Sr. was adamantly opposed to it.
