“Thought”?? I’m sure most of them think that way even today. Reading a lot of reports from the UK before the Brexit vote, I was struck by the recurrent theme delusion among the “Leavers” that a non-EU Britain would somehow be able to make up the economic shortfalls that Exit would cause by virtue of their supposed imagined position as “Center of the Commonwealth” or “the Mother Country” or whatever. The Remain campaigners tried to remind them that it wasn’t 1910 any more, but to no avail.
