Hello Lizards,

Am a bit late for this, but I just wanted to pay tribute to my Maternal Grandfather, Robert Hendrickson, on this (day after) Memorial Day thread. Born in 1900, he lied about his age and volunteered to fight on the Italian Front in 1915! After being transfered to the Western Front in 1918, he was gasses and had his thigh pock-marked with shrapnel, for which he spent months in Hospital recovering.

I’ve been told by those know knew him, that I closely resemble him in habits and interests. Sadly, he died 6 years before I was born, so I never got to know him nor his great love of history (he had 1000’s of books), antiques (he ran a landmark Greenwich Village shop for over 30 years), and politics (he was a traditional Northeast Republican with a highly individualistic streak). While I can’t bring him back, this picture below from the classic 1949 “Greenwich Village: Today a& Yesterday” taken by Bernice Abbott will have to suffice.

A proud WWI Veteran and the Grandfather I never knew….

Here’s to all of our Veterans, on this (belated) Memorial Day.
