It’s the most thoughtful and well-worked out discursion into the meaning of American Pie I’ve ever read.

Late winter, 1977. Great Lakes, Illinois, Naval Training Center.

Yr. humble servant: fresh from flunking out of college, more than a little scared of just what I had gotten myself into.

One evening, maybe three or four weeks into the training, about 20 or so of us recruits, taking a smoke break in the shower room. Started talking about music. This being the 70’s, of course the topic eventually got around to American Pie.

Someone started singing it, and a few others joined in, and eventually everyone else, and we sang the whole damn song right there and then.

American Pie has always been one of my favorite songs, and more than a little bit of the reason was that night in Great Lakes.
