The Verdun battlefield is beautiful nowadays but it is nevertheless the saddest and most tragic place I have ever visited. The thing about Verdun, compared to the other Great War slaughterhouses, is that the battle area is so small, just 20 square kilometers. You can easily see the whole thing from the roof of Fort Douamont, which was the focus of the battle. A quarter of a million men died in that area in the space of 10 months. It is a national forest now, with the remnants of craters and trenches still visible. The rangers still find human remains every week. These go into the giant crypts of the Douamont Ossuary.
