So, he’s only tweeted twice (and he deleted one) in roughly 25 hours. Has to be a record. Maybe one of his attorneys finally sat him down and told him to shut his fucking yap before the FBI busts down the Oval Office door.

re: #20 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Climate changes all the time, duh!!

That’s pretty much exactly what he said in 2012.

Q: Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?

A: No. The Earth’s climate has always varied substantially as demonstrated by pre-industrial human records and natural evidence. There is no doubt that human activity can change local conditions, but on a global scale natural processes including variations in solar output and ocean currents control climatic conditions. There is no credible scientific evidence that greenhouse gas atmospheric concentrations, including carbon dioxide, affect global climate. I oppose regulating greenhouse gases. Doing so will significantly increase energy prices and keep more people in poverty.

The Verdun battlefield is beautiful nowadays but it is nevertheless the saddest and most tragic place I have ever visited. The thing about Verdun, compared to the other Great War slaughterhouses, is that the battle area is so small, just 20 square kilometers. You can easily see the whole thing from the roof of Fort Douamont, which was the focus of the battle. A quarter of a million men died in that area in the space of 10 months. It is a national forest now, with the remnants of craters and trenches still visible. The rangers still find human remains every week. These go into the giant crypts of the Douamont Ossuary.

These DNA tests are becoming quite popular, which means that they are also popular topics for stories for websites, newspapers, etc.

Of course “privacy is out the window”, but not in the way implied by the headline.

No one is going to steal your DNA.

And, the reason people use DNA on genealogical sites is to be found.

That’s the whole point of using DNA for genealogy - so your relatives can find you.

Now, if that bothers you then don’t do the DNA tests.

There are probably people who take these tests who don’t know what they are doing. But having looked at the websites of the legitimate companies, it appears to me they go to some length to provide information telling people what is involved.

The criminal case that made the headlines yesterday gathered DNA from evidence - not from strangers. The data was used to compare to public or semi-public data in genealogy databases (it appears, though the police accounts are a bit murky on the details).

But herein lay a great truth - we are all related to each other. Now, we all won’t show up as cousins to each other on these tests because the purpose of the tests are to find close-ish relatives and not relatives separated by a thousand years.

Yet I bet that I share at least one common ancestor, probably more, with nearly all the members here within the past 500 years.

I find it comical that white supremacists love to take these tests to prove that they’re truly white - and the results come back that they are anything but causing nothing but problems for these idiot extremists. They see percentages of anything outside of Europe as a problem and most people have that.

And that these tests are now being used to take down criminals is great.

If only law enforcement had a ready source of test material they could work against and which could help solve tens of thousands of crimes across the nation.

From a health perspective I am both curious and don’t know if I want to know if BRCA1/BRCA2 are in my maternal line. Along with other prospective health issues. Thus far I have decided not to know and it’s working just as well. Plus this way no insurance companies can charge me more, when the Rs finally allow them to start doing shit like that.

In fact, Defendant Trump this morning repeatedly emphasized that in the investigation, “they’re looking [in]to something having to do with his [i.e., Mr. Cohen’s] business” and not the legal work hedid for Mr. Trump in this case, that Mr. Cohen did “absolutely nothing wrong,” that Mr. Cohen is pleading the Fifth because “he’s got other things—he’s got businesses,” and that no campaign funds were used to pay the $130,000.[See<#sp=show-clips>">video.foxnews.com; at 14:15-16:00.]These statements—which contradict the position taken by Mr. Cohen in this declaration (and by Defendants in their stay application)—further underscore why the absence of any meaningful detail in Mr. Cohen’s declarationto enable the Court to make an intelligent assessment of his Fifth Amendment claimis fatal to Defendants’position.

The Old Timer Cheechakos brought sourdough on their quest for gold. It was the only way they could make bread for survival. Many carried their starter in pouches they hung round their neck under their clothing to keep the starter from freezing. Without the starter their flour was worthless.

Why did you have to make my favorite food and post it here? My mouth is watering just looking at the pic. I love totally homemade food. That’s how I cook my meals. I’m not a take-out food kind of person. I made some yeast rolls recently, took lunch to one of my former students and her colleagues, and none of them knew the rolls were homemade until I told them. Cooking is my passion next to the remodeling work I’m doing on my house. The guy doing the work was here last week and said it looks as if I’m finished with everything. I told him I can always find something else that I want to change, and I can. In fact, I already have, so I’ll be calling him tomorrow with a new list to complete. Cooking and working on my house keep me busy since my daughter graduated college and took a job in another state.

Heh. Watching Lawrence O’Donnell and he is contending that the Trump Fox ‘n’ Friends segment this morning was cut short by Rupert Murdoch. He thinks Murdoch was watching and called to have Doocy hurry Trump off.

He is saying that there is no way anyone would cut a President off as Doocy did, without the command coming from the top. He feels Murdoch, an early riser, watched the show because it may have been his creation as a friend to Trump.

Then he realized it was going off the rails and Trump was hurting himself and so the call came to cut it.

Interesting conjecture. Who knows, but it makes some sense as it is all a big TV production anyway. It’s how Trump got elected.

I was surprised when my DNA test showed Iberian Peninsula, with me thinking I was part Hispanic! That lasted long enough for my brother to inform me that’s where all the French part came from and we weren’t Hispanic. We are white as white can be. I was frickin’ disappointed!

I found out my 2nd classification was eastern Europe Jewish. My mom is a mystery & I am thrilled. I also got my results on passover.

My surname is German, Paternal grandfather’s Dad came from Germany as a boy and his mom had a German immigrant father and a mother whose parents emigrated. I’m all over the place.

I got Great Britain at 56%, Ireland/Scotland/Wales at 17%, Iberian Peninsula which accounts for my French Canadian roots at 14%, and Scandinavia at 6%. That’s it. I was hoping for something interesting!

Very cool!

I had a friend who is adopted do the DNA test and the results came back with her actual biological mother and aunt! She spent some days wondering what to do, but then decided to contact them because she figured they wouldn’t have done the DNA if they hadn’t wanted to be found.

I find that the ethnicity stuff is mostly low on precision, especially at the nebulous levels of terms like “Hispanic”. I know only a few tests gives one metrics to evaluate precision. Some human populations with enforced marriage rules (like endogamy) probably give a higher precision.

The cousin matching is very powerful though, and through that one can find connections to all sorts of places.

Regarding being “white”, I notice that quite a few Americans with colonial American ancestry who, all things considered, think of them as “white” who get cousin matches to African Americans, which gives a rather direct view into our American history.

The Iberian peninsula was a merry mixture. The literal Iberians were probably Berber-speakers from across the Straits, but the main population of the Peninsula were Celts before the Romans took over. Then of course, the Visigoths. I’m ignoring the Carthaginians, because they never amounted to much populationwise.

Inheritance is quite random.

And, because recombination rates are lower in males, many men will pass on chromosomes in whole to their offspring, which means the child will not inherit DNA from many distant ancestors.

Which is a good thing. Persistent passing down of the same DNA would increase the probability of inheriting defective genes.

DNA is a hot topic right now, but I wonder how many people understand that we’re really discussing evolution?

I’ve always wondered if creationists take these DNA tests, and if they do what they make of them.

In my genealogy circles I don’t encounter obvious creationists. Cryptic ones may abound, but I think if they do they must be under some hush-hush order.

My ancestors mostly came over before the Revolutionary War began. The most interesting fact in my family - and I’ve mentioned it before - is that I believe that a major gap in the documentation in my paternal lineage occurred because a son of the family escaped Kentucky with some slaves and a family friend and ran to the free state of Indiana, where he met and married his wife and they all settled down together.

One of the side effects of doing genealogy is that one gets to study history. Well, genealogy is family history, but I mean in the larger sense.

For example, until I got into my family tree I was very ignorant of American history of the period from the middle 18th century to about 1830, ignoring the actual Revolutionary War.

Now, though, I feel I’ve learned quite a bit.

My ex’s maternal grandmother has a fairly extensive Danish history in a book. They lived in the state of Washington. I just need to track down which relative has the book since I gave it to the ex when we got divorced. I could use that to put together the family tree.

Ancestry retains ownership of the dna test results. I use the site for genealogy research. Every time I get a begging email telling me the wonders of their dna tests - I write back and tell them I prefer to retain the right to my heritage. I also don’t put my family tree online. I’ve found relatives in many countries of the world without the need for dna or having my family details online.

I can’t image not having PTSD after being on the Eastern Front. However, it does sound like she might be just the person to answer your questions. She didn’t live it. Her father did. I think that’s much different than asking the person who has suffered because of what they went through.

I haven’t run into a lot of O’Farrells. In fact, I’ve run into none, although interestingly when I was a kid, we were at the San Diego Zoo and they have the different markers that show the names of donors. There was one that was an O’Farrell family and listed the siblings who had the exact names as me and my brother and sister. That was a little strange!

I do love the fact that I’ve been spending a lot of time in San Pedro, California, and they have an O’Farrell street. How can I not love that? Oh, and I know San Francisco has an O’Farrell street as well.

I’m with you on your own research. I discovered a family tree started by some one in the family that didn’t have my grandmother’s name correct nor one of her brother’s. That’s just not right. I’ve gotten some people to make changes to their trees. In my communications with people found by looking at their trees, I’d say about half are appreciative of being contacted.

Once someone had my own grandmother in the wrong family! I think that one was eventually changed.

The tough nut to crack is the “one tree” at FamilySearch, where anyone can edit. Some people get quite determined to assert a particular relationship, even when it’s wrong. Or to kill off living people, etc.

Regarding DNA - all I can say is that it has been useful to me. And more importantly, I’ve been able to help some people who did not know their biological parents/father, or discovered the hard way that the person who was supposedly their father was in fact not the biological father.

Haven’t done my DNA yet. Are people here mostly using 23 and me?

Ancestry. I’m not interested in the ethnic breakdown but finding cousins. Just heard from a lady whose great grandmother was mine’s older sister and her dad remembers my grandfather’s family in Pittsburgh.

This will probably kill the thread, since a new post is up, but doing paper genealogy, no dna, I’ve discovered that my husband and I are 11th cousins. And that I really should have given my great aunt’s Old Fashioned recipe to my father in law, since he was also related to her husband. Tangled trees.

That’s pretty amazing. It’d be shocking if I found how my parents relate. Their families were from totally different parts of Europe.

re: #54 Charles Johnson

I’ve made reference to Trump as Queeg in the movie “The Caine Mutiny”. He’s melting down just like Queeg. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Trump fondling steel balls during his “press conferences”.
