The moon is pretty damn worthless in terms of materials. The only valuable elements are so dispersed you’d have to actually significantly deplete the mass of the moon to get at them. Asteroids, on the other hand, are chock full o’ goodness.

The moon would be a natural stepping stone on the way. Why launch from earth when you can have a low gravity base and staging area? The moon and the la grange orbits like L3 will have traffic back and forth.
