I’m really enjoying John Oliver’s deep dives into current events; he uncovers a lot of interesting facts and perspectives that you won’t get anywhere else. For example, in this piece he totally busts Fox News using 5-year old footage to fear-monger against Syrian refugees — and the rest of it is great too.
In contrast to Fox’s predictable fearmongering and hate, the blog Humans of New York is sharing various refugee stories to show the people behind the mass exodus. This particular story brought tears to my eyes:

Are they typical younger people that know yelling that while being filmed on a video might make some people uneasy and they see that as funny? Maybe they were just having a laugh at the expense of the video (news?) takers and the rest of the people they knew it would drive crazy.

While House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is rounding up votes to seal his bid to succeed John Boehner as speaker of the House, far-right congressmen are backing an insurgent bid by Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla., who tried to unseat Boehner earlier this year.

Most controversially, Webster spoke at one IBLP event about the need for wives to submit to their husbands and for husbands to be the heads of their households, which, as Sarah Posner notes, is strongly in line with Gothard’s views about the dominance of male authority.
