A Great John Oliver Bit on Migrants and Refugees Catches Fox News Using Old Footage to Spread Fear

“We’re not saying any of those people are terrorists”

I’m really enjoying John Oliver’s deep dives into current events; he uncovers a lot of interesting facts and perspectives that you won’t get anywhere else. For example, in this piece he totally busts Fox News using 5-year old footage to fear-monger against Syrian refugees — and the rest of it is great too.

In contrast to Fox’s predictable fearmongering and hate, the blog Humans of New York is sharing various refugee stories to show the people behind the mass exodus. This particular story brought tears to my eyes:

There’s an entire series that’s been going for the last few days on Twitter and Facebook. Check it out.

That video John Oliver first shows from Fox that was shot in 2010 prior to the actual exodus is suspicious to me on it’s own.

I see younger people on a train with one of them chanting Allahu Akbar and others answering back and smiling.

Are they typical younger people that know yelling that while being filmed on a video might make some people uneasy and they see that as funny? Maybe they were just having a laugh at the expense of the video (news?) takers and the rest of the people they knew it would drive crazy.

Hey, I was young too, and we sometimes did some things like this just to mess with people.

Rush says NASA is lying about water on the moon. Because reasons. (link via JoeMyGod)

“They’re lying about it. They’re just making up the amount of ice in the North and South Poles, they’re making up the temperatures, they’re lying and making up false charts and so forth. So what’s to stop them from making up something that happened on Mars that will help advance their left-wing agenda on this planet? OK so there’s flowing water on Mars. Yip yip yip yahoo. You know me, I’m science 101, big time guy, tech advance it, you know it, I’m all in. But, NASA has been corrupted by the current regime. I want to find out what they’re going to tell us. OK, flowing water on Mars. If we’re even to believe that, what are they going to tell us that means? That’s what I’m going to wait for. Because I guarantee, let’s just wait and see, this is September 28, let’s just wait and see. Don’t know how long it’s going to take, but this news that there is flowing water on Mars is somehow going to find its way into a technique to advance the leftist agenda.”

Which is why I have issues with the video. But the smiling each time they chant just says to me they are having fun with it all and probably using it fake scare some folks that are easily scared. Like FOX News viewers.

Matter of fact, the guy leading the cheers reminds me of a good friend in good old Catholic high school who would often do this kind of thing to get people going. That is exactly why I thought of the whole “goofing” thing in the video.

Think about that.

They made it so big a story that they criticized her for not addressing it while she was trying to ignore it. Now that they forced her to address it, they move the damn target and criticize her for talking about this all the time.

What is she to do? Nothing will be good enough.

And now, the Duggar candidate to be Speaker.

Far-Right’s Choice For Speaker Tied To Disgraced Duggar Leader

While House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is rounding up votes to seal his bid to succeed John Boehner as speaker of the House, far-right congressmen are backing an insurgent bid by Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla., who tried to unseat Boehner earlier this year.

Webster could also win support from the Religious Right, as he has, in the words of University of North Florida professor Julie Ingersoll, “aligned himself with organizations and individuals who advocate the application of biblical law to contemporary society, including wives submitting to their husbands.”

Specifically, Webster has long history of collaborating with the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), a ministry founded by Bill Gothard. Ingersoll writes that Webster’s speeches to Gothard’s group emphasized that “God is on his side and that God opposes his opponents,” even “attribut[ing] the fact that he has often run unopposed to God’s intervention as a result of these prayers.”

Most controversially, Webster spoke at one IBLP event about the need for wives to submit to their husbands and for husbands to be the heads of their households, which, as Sarah Posner notes, is strongly in line with Gothard’s views about the dominance of male authority.

Florida can’t sink back beneath the waves too quickly for me.

My knee jerk thought is that it’s bad for everyone - except Trump to feed his fragile ego. It gives the impression that he’s our next president even though primaries haven’t even been held yet. No other candidate is getting even a whisper of press, not an acknowledgement of existence. It’s making a total joke of our democratic process and I, for one, find it offensive.

Serious question: Did they originally call themselves “Who?” (like in “Who’s on first”), but were finally (as the Declaration of Independence says) “fatigued into compliance” by people’s idiotic compulsion to stick a “the” in front of every band’s name?

The Driftglass take on the hideous exhibition of Chuck Todd and Carly Fiorina’s PP discussion:

“Voters” are entirely motivated by their “moods”, and consequently it is not the job of elite, Both Siderist pundits to discuss whether some candidate is, say, lying through her fucking teeth or not. They are merely there to note the rise and fall of candidates based on how well they pander to the mood of the monolithic, non-party-affiliated “voter”.

And if Chuck Todd had even one scintilla of credibility left (he did not, by the way) this corked it:

CHUCK TODD:
Can I just tell you that Bill Kristol wrote this great column yesterday where he basically said, you know…

And that is the exact moment I turned off “Meet the Press”.

“In February 1964, the Detours became aware of the group Johnny Devlin and the Detours and changed their name. Townshend and his room-mate Richard Barnes spent a night considering names, focusing on a theme of joke announcements, including “No One” and “the Group”. Townshend preferred “the Hair”, and Barnes liked “the Who” because it “had a pop punch”. Daltrey chose “the Who” the next morning”

This is the best part and the first time I’ve felt even remotely fond of Putin—not because I think he’s a nice guy, but because all the wingnuts & Islamophobes are going to freak the hell out now and that makes me happy. He even picked Erdogan & Abbas as guests of honor—those two are the the sprinkles & cherry on top:

Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas were the guests of honour at the unveiling of the 20,000-square-metre mosque in the Russian capital.

“This mosque will become an extremely important spiritual centre for Muslims in Moscow and the whole of Russia,” Putin said in a televised speech, on the eve of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, known as Kurban Bairam in Russia.

“It will be a source for education, spreading humanist ideas and the true values of Islam.”

“Terrorists from the so-called Islamic State actually cast a shadow on the great global religion of Islam,” he added. “Their ideology is built on hate.” […]

And I don’t blame her for that reaction - looking at it objectively it does look a lot like an ad. It has the little arrow symbol in the upper right just like Google ads do, and it doesn’t match the style of the rest of the site. So subscribers will no longer see it.

If Zimmerman keeps it up he’ll be the one to beat for a GOP Congressional seat from Florida.

I bet he would do very well in certain parts of Florida.

He sure wouldn’t need to do those crazy commercials where the candidate is out shooting to show everyone they can use guns.

So, another rad skier passed away in a skydiving accident. Erik Roner, 39, leaves behind a wife and two young children.

I’ve said it before, athletes like these get picked off one by one every year. It’s so sad yet it seems inevitable we see tragedies like this fairly consistently. RIP

It was the right wing that was going for the long con, and caught up a lot of people in it. In some cases it took 6 or 7 years to figure out we’d been had. Many still haven’t.

Been working today on cleaning up all the “undefined variable” notices the new version of PHP is throwing at me. I understand why it’s considered a best practice not to reference a variable before it’s defined, but man oh man, it’s way simpler to assume an undefined variable is FALSE than to test it first.

Oh brave new coding world, that has such notices in it.

They come from the same breed of people who stop in a roundabout and let traffic in.

It’s in Beautiful Downtown Kent—the street swerves over and becomes another street, left, then right. I’m going physically straight at the first curve, so I dutifully signal a right turn, but half the people in front of me who just follow the road think they have to signal a left turn.

My house is on an intersection in a little pocket neighborhood where 3 of the four directions away from my house only go a block before curving off to the left or right (the fourth direction goes to a roundabout). I’ve caught myself signaling the turns a couple of times. At least I can still find my house…

The house I grew up in is on a street with an intersection at the bottom of a hill, and 100 times out of 100 I would make a left. On the rare occasions I was supposed to go straight I never did and would up going two extra miles to get back to where I meant to go.
