Another possible wrong assumption is that the accommodationists are being naive. Perhaps it’s not so much naivete as much as desperation to maneuver themselves onto the “winning” side.
Bandwagon effects are positive feedback mechanisms, and perhaps we are seeing one such phenomena now with the mainstreaming of bigotry.

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to select Wilbur Ross Jr as secretary of the Commerce Department, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing two people familiar with the deliberations.
Ross is a former Democrat, but over the years switched and was a Trump supporter.
He is also known for eliminating unions and being pro-coal:
ICG was formed in May 2004 by investor Wilbur Ross, who led a group that bought many of Horizon Natural Resources’ assets in a bankruptcy auction. Ross, originally operating as Newcoal LLC with four other investors, expressed interest in buying Horizon’s nonunion properties, but not its six union operations. Horizon was then allowed to sever its union contracts, including pension benefits, by bankruptcy court, according to the Associated Press in the story “Coal Miners Lose Health Benefits” on August 9, 2004.

Yes.
However, I will note that there is quite a bit of asymmetry when it comes to pooling labor and pooling other types of capital.
Namely, human agency. That is, human desires, wishes, foibles, feelings, etc.
The value of, say, robots is that they are free of such foibles. So a owner of a factory of robots is far, far better off than a union of 100 people who otherwise might have been employed in that endeavor.
It seems to me that in practice the labor movement of the first half of the 20th century is now going extinct. Whatever little influence labor unions have had remaining in the past decade or two will certainly be squashed in the Trump epoch.

This year my family was scattered in various places, so I had an 11 a.m Thanksgiving lunch at a managed care facility with parents, a brief conversation with son on his way to dinner with girlfriend and grandmother, and then a long drive for an early evening dinner in the country with wife, daughter2 of 3 and her new boyfriend. Before the day’s rushing around began, I had coffee and watched the 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony on CSPAN. I recommend it highly if you need an hour of feeling good about the country, (tempered by the knowledge that the next honorees may include Chachi, Ted Nugent, and Gary Busey).

And as the stories spread, Coler makes money from the ads on his websites. He wouldn’t give exact figures, but he says stories about other fake-news proprietors making between $10,000 and $30,000 a month apply to him. Coler fits into a pattern of other faux news sites that make good money, especially by targeting Trump supporters.
However, Coler insists this is not about money. It’s about showing how easily fake news spreads. And fake news spread wide and far before the election. When I pointed out to Coler that the money gave him a lot of incentive to keep doing it regardless of the impact, he admitted that was “correct.”
Coler says he has tried to shine a light on the problem of fake news. He has spoken to the media about it. But those organizations didn’t know who he actually was. He gave them a fake name: Allen Montgomery.
Coler, a registered Democrat, says he has no regrets about his fake news empire. He doesn’t think fake news swayed the election.
It’s “not about the money” but he’s going to keep doing it for the money.

Thanksgiving festivities have concluded at Toad Hall.
The star attraction has been duly dismembered and the bones-o are simmering for turkey stock. The Macy’s parade was watched, albeit with loud commentary — CBS coverage was pitiful, NBC only marginally better. Football was viewed, but watched Miracle on 34th Street in classic b&w instead of the final uneven contest. The vintage china was used, JC Penney Vineyard pattern inherited from my father’s mother. The little turkey-shaped candle that has survived unburned through at least seven moves and fifty-odd years served as the centerpiece.
The little old matriarch has hobbled off to bed after declaring her intention to have dressing and gravy for breakfast. (the former made according to her mother’s recipe with apples and celery and onion and raisins. not allowed to forget the raisins.)
Tradition has been upheld.
About to give way to the siren song of tryptophan myself.
Grateful for this community of sane crazy folks, to brace each other through the breakers ahead. Thanks to and for you all.

My Mrs has been a travel agent for mainly corporate clients for almost 2 decades. She never recommends Trump hotels. Says they are a glitz and no service.
Will only book people into them if they are the best deal by far or a client has an in there for a special rate. For all the travel I’ve done with her we have yet to stay a Trump property.
She had for a while a Trump sales person that used to call her. One of the new hotels that has since gone belly up. Pre opening she had called asking for better rates to try it out herself or for clients. They never agreed and said they didn’t need agents booking rooms. When it was apparent the property was going to fail they started to call her regularly offering her deals. She said you were so rude pre opening i wouldn’t send an enemy to your hotel even if it were free.

Wife is an expert on hotels. Says the problem with Trump hotels is bad service and lots of tacky decorations that don’t go together.
High end properties are supposed to have a very familiar look and feel throughout across all markets. The only allowable exception is resort properties where you vacation as opposed to work cities.
The idea being if you are doing corporate travel you can send a client to any city and if you stay in a Ritz Four Seasons etc you know what you’re getting before you get there.
Trump hotels largely being different actual companies under an umbrella name don’t follow that normal business model. As an agent makes sending clients to them difficult. Might like property A but property B could a completely different creature.
As the agent you don’t want clients calling you at all hours to say this place in Dubai is nothing like the hotel in SoHo get me out of here.

Today’s paper, the pre Black Friday edition, estimated that if a reader purchased every item on sale listed in the ads in the paper they could save a grand total of $73,786.97!
WOW…note the accuracy. I wonder if the newest intern is stuck with a calculator and the ad sheets to compute this very accurate information.

For a class with my business English students, we studied a unit about Branding. I found a couple of YouTube videos about the subject, and they suggested a company’s brand (and logo) should reflect the values and mission of the company. For companies that have a long history, the brand over many years becomes synonymous with the culture of the firm. The flipside of branding requires the company to support the public image of the brand with responsible and consistent behavior and practices. So, despite problems with some Ford models over the decades, people still trust Ford as a maker of decent automobiles. And Ford cars are consistently good, no matter where you buy them. Ditto Apple, Nike, Starbucks, McDonald’s, and other big names. People stay at Hilton hotels, because Hiltons are consistently clean, solicitous to guests, and comfortable. The company makes it that way.
But Trump is just a label someone is leasing. It’s not their brand, and the Trump Org could care less how that property is being run. Over time, the Trump “brand” will be regarded as overpriced products, returning considerably less value for the money than competing properties. Basically, Trump is violating all the common-sense business rules of maintaining a brand’s value. And he supposedly went to Wharton.

I have a tendency not to reboot my laptop very often, since it serves as my main computing device. I leave Opera open for long periods of time, opening and closing tabs as necessary. There’s probably a memory leak issue there.
So, I shut down the laptop and went off to teach young minds. Now I am back, wondering if the students had left their young minds in their dorm rooms. I’ll spare you the teacher complaints about students’ inability to follow simple directions given just four days prior to class. They’ll hear all about it on Monday.

Mystery manIf I could remember where or when I saw the photo with the younger Trump, it would make my search much easier. Alas, I cannot. And my google-fu has failed me. So, the association may remain only imaginary.

In his essay that ran at a white nationalist blog, he does not identify himself, other than supposedly being “half-Jewish” — which is a pretty weird description if you ask me. If it weren’t for the heil Hitler pose — oh, excuse me, the “Roman salute” — I wouldn’t even bother hoping to tie him to Trump Jr.
As if 2016 didn’t suck bad enough already, “Mom” (Florence Henderson) has passed away at age 82.

I did a search on Ixquick and got “no hits, here’s a picture of a puppy instead.”
This guy might be just some random dude trying to get attention, though his face seems familiar to me. On the other hand, lots of faces seem familiar to me, as I am not very good with faces even of people I have known for decades.
I’ve got a pretty good memory for faces, but even so, I’ve gone up to complete strangers to say, “good to see you again!” only to realize they’re a totally different person, making my approach seem rather awkward. D’oh!
Sorting out my many students is a challenge, because inevitably I’ll have two or three in each class that resemble each other in hair styles or facial structure that I have to think twice before calling on them by name.
PS I’m teaching 172 students this term. Then there’s the two groups graduating this June and the year after whom I’ve already taught — for another 145 or so.
I gather that most Chinese profs and teachers don’t even bother learning their students’ names. One of my freshmen was so surprised I remembered who she was that she made a point after class to thank me profusely. I just told her it’s my habit.

Of note, the Green and Libertarian Parties did file for a recount in Ohio in 2004, which resulted in the jailing of two election officials there who tried to jimmy the recount (by not randomly selecting ballots).

One of the things Dr. Stein noted on her Website is that some of the voting machinery used in Wisconsin is identical to machinery banned in California due to ease of chicanery and lack of updates.
I don’t know that a recount would necessarily flip any of the states she is calling for, but it is her right to ask for a recount if she puts up the bond to pay for it (and pays the appropriate lawyers and such).
I can’t imagine the butthurt on the right if a recount managed to flip those states.
Dr. Stein claims she is not interested in either flipping the election to Sec’y Clinton, nor confirming the election of Mr. Trump. She claims she is only interested in ensuring the integrity of counting the vote tally.

Well, the Connecticut Compromise did not explicitly address the issue of more representation for slave states (such as Delaware, a small slave state) over Connecticut (a free state). All that compromise did was ensure equal representation in the Senate.
From Article V of the Constitution:
…no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.
However, the Three-Fifths Compromise did ensure additional representation in the US House for slave states.
On the issue of the Three-Fifths Compromise, Wikipedia [citation needed] notes that the compromise afforded slave states about a third more Electoral Votes (and House seats) than those states would have had if slaves were not counted at all.

The Three-Fifths Compromise gave a disproportionate representation of slave states in the House of Representatives relative to the voters in free states until the American Civil War. In These Times is calling for a general strike or national sick out on Inauguration Day to “send a message.”
I find these so-called messages “don’t shop on Black Friday,” &c not to be counter-productive, but simply non-productive.
Say I have grocery shopping or holiday shopping to do. I choose to honour this boycott on Black Friday or Inauguration Day. That means I do that shopping the next day. Didn’t send much of a message to business, most of which didn’t have anything to do with Mr. Trump’s election or commercialisation of the holidays in the first place.
These sorts of things aren’t like the Montgomery Bus Boycott, where people said “nope, not riding the bus at all until they change their policies” and were willing to suffer real inconvenience until change happened.
My skipping the grocery store for one day will do precisely nothing except make me feel good (if I felt good about that sort of thing). If I skipped the grocery store all the time (presuming I could do that), it would hurt my local grocer, not Mr. Trump.
About the only thing that would hurt Mr. Trump would be a boycott of his businesses, which I do not patronise anyway (I don’t have that kind of money). Ivanka Trump is apparently feeling the hurt in her business in that she is now separating her business Twitter accounts from her personal account and such, because a whole lot of people don’t really care for her politics.
I don’t really see how to hurt Mr. Trump, but a one-day boycott or strike isn’t going to do it. It’s not really more than a variant of hashtag activism.

I’m sure Trump’s main objection was to win the nomination, then win the election if he could. He had no plan after that, or in fact any interest in serving as president. As someone said here, he’s like the dog who chased and then caught the car. He has no idea what to do with it.
Those 60 million people voted for a guy who’s only mission was to be elected president, not to BE president. He’s done no planning; only rambling about what he wants to do, then changing his mind 10 minutes later. He’s Crazy Uncle Donnie, who’s maybe got signs of Alzheimer’s.

We had turkey two ways. One roti with a sausage stuffing from a French butchery up in the city (about 7lbs) and one ‘brick’ or spatchcock (about 9lbs). The second was my favorite. All I did was make up a stick of herbed butter, insert said butter under it’s skin wherever I could reach, then drizzled a little olive oil, salt, and pepper on it and put it on the grill (indirect heat) for about 1 hour. Skin was crispy, meat was juicy, and presentation was pretty damn nice too. I’ll never deep-fry a turkey again…that’s fun, but it dries the bird out.
This was after the first 15 minutes at a high heat (500ish) to get it started…then about 50 minutes at 350.
I did slip a baking tray under the grill to catch the fat drippings. No flare ups. Gotta pull that thing out and clean it today though.
We gotta wait until tomorrow to do Thanksgiving here in Germany, but the turkey is already on to brine and the cranberries are sauced…

Some of you may recall my bitching through August and September about Hillary not campaigning on the issues - that she was playing Trump’s game of character assassination…something he was far better at because he didn’t care if he was right or not. Well, apparently I wasn’t the only person to notice.
The content of the ads is revealing. Both candidates spent most of their television advertising time attacking the other person’s character. In fact, the losing candidate’s ads did little else. More than three-quarters of the appeals in Mrs. Clinton’s advertisements (and nearly half of Mr. Trump’s) were about traits, characteristics or dispositions. Only 9 percent of Mrs. Clinton’s appeals in her ads were about jobs or the economy. By contrast, 34 percent of Mr. Trump’s appeals focused on the economy, jobs, taxes and trade.
Since the start of presidential campaign television advertising in 1952, no campaign has made 76 percent of its television ad appeals about any single topic. On average, traits typically garner about 22 percent of the appeals. The economy typically generates about 28 percent of the appeals. There’s usually much more balance.

This year more than most.
We went around the table last night giving thanks, and at the end my wife said how refreshing it was to have a zero politics evening. I followed that with a toast of “We made Thanksgiving great again!”
I made one other sarcastic political comment that got groans of “too soon”…but we were a pretty liberal group -me, my wife, her mom, a retired Jewish dentist and his wife from New York, their son, their daughter and her girlfriend (and her daughter), and a gay couple from the city. My mother would have freaked the fuck out with that crowd in the house.

I felt the very same thing during the campaign - I kept wondering, where on earth are the blanket ads with reasons to vote FOR Hillary? Where, during the DNC, was the condemnation of GOP obstruction and the “Obama could have done so much more with a cooperative congress, so make sure HRC has one”? Instead, it was all trump, all the time, even giving loathsome creatures like Paul Ryan an out (that “Trump doesn’t really represent GOPers” rubbish)
And then there’s this, which is tantamount to campaign malpractice: Garbage In, Garbage Out. Turns out Clinton’s ground game sucked.
A labor organizer in Ohio, who wished to remain anonymous, reports that Clinton’s early GOTV effort there focused on Republicans in the mistaken belief a significant number of them could be peeled away. This play largely failed. And it also involved serious opportunity costs: traditional Democratic constituencies like African Americans and the white working class were neglected, and Clinton ended up badly under-performing Obama among both groups, especially in the Rust Belt.

Instead, the Clinton campaign went all in on TV ads. Meanwhile, field offices suffered. In 2012 the Obama campaign had 789 field offices; this time around, Clinton only had 489 nationwide.It gets worse. With too few people on the ground and the local knowledge of grassroots activists being shunned, the campaign apparently started feeding garbage to its computers and thus got garbage in return.
The computer-obsessed Clinton campaign — having lost touch with people but not big data — seems to have inadvertently turned out Trump voters!
And weren’t we even expressing concerns about GOP crossover a few months ago, as well? That it was a bad idea since those people, even if they did vote for HRC at the top of the ticket, would go GOP all the way down?

I think it was a mistake to try to beat Trump on character - too easy to lose on false accusations and retaliations don’t always get the airtime they need to sink in. I think if she’d run on issues and refused to participate in being outraged and disgusted at her opponent every time she was in front of a camera, people who get their opinions from TV appearances exclusively might have seen that she was a mature alternative and not just as petty and mean as her opponent.

That’s why he may be the one pulling the strings here, metaphorically stabbing Trump and his administration in the back.
Because a crippled Trump administration - one in which his cronies won’t be able to do anything amidst chaos, confusion and anger - would be even more ideal for a guy like Putin, who can step in to fill the void internationally.
That was my main concern ever since Moonbat Jill announced this. If it is a stunt, she’ll have her reputation (whatever it was, please don’t laugh) destroyed outside of the Bros. And then there’s this, which is tantamount to campaign malpractice: Garbage In, Garbage Out. Turns out Clinton’s ground game sucked.
Ugh. Well, we are at the bone picking stage, so there is going to be a lot written and speculated as to how Clinton could have lost the election.
Some of it doesn’t make sense to me at this time. Being in Columbus it seemed like she was doing the same type of things Obama did as far as street level. And it is my understanding that in Franklin County (Columbus) she actually outperformed Obama’s two elections.
It has been reported the eastern Appalachian areas of Ohio is what turned the state to Trump. The turnout was way up for those people. It will be interesting if that could be broken down to campaign issues, like negative commercials instead of positive, or was it character.
I keep seeing and hearing a lot of people said they just couldn’t stomach Hillary and at the same time saw her as the untouchable/unapproachable establishment? That hints for some no matter what she did it wasn’t going to work.

I didn’t help out on either of Obama’s campaigns so I don’t have that reference, but there were a lot of apathetic and overconfident Democrats out there who didn’t want to volunteer to help out.

I watched all of the debates, and yes, while she did have policy proposals each one was coupled with an attack on Trump…this is from the first question from the first debate. I remember because at the time I tweeted that she drew first blood…

I’m also going to be very leery about reporting on the election. Take for example the link the Darthstar just put up. I checked the “about” info.
Jacobin is a leading voice of the American left, offering socialist perspectives on politics, economics, and culture. The print magazine is released quarterly and reaches over 20,000 subscribers, in addition to a web audience of 1,000,000 a month.
It is a good guess that they were very pro Bernie Sanders. And I do have issues with “unamed” sources. I believe data when someone puts a name to it and there is a reputation and professionalism behind it.
And that bit about African Americans and Latinos saying “you only come around every four years” sounds canned. That would be more a problem of the Ohio Democratic Party than Clinton’s campaign.
It is true. Only three years ago the Ohio Democratic Party underwent almost complete turnover in the leadership. I don’t follow it real close, but I wonder if they were not up to power with the new people. It had gone through the blender due to Kasich’s killing a lot of Democrats his last two elections.

I was the one who posted the Jacobin article, not darthstar. The reason I’m inclined to believe it is because it’s entirely consistent with the end results we saw with our own eyes (I mean, it was obvious HRC was trying to get GOP crossover votes early on - just look at the DNC convention speeches - and the mayor of Madison, WI said the Clinton campaign never even contacted him)
As for trump steamrolling the rest of the GOP field, I can’t help but notice he was the only GOPer who came out against the TPP. I’d say, at least as far as his rust-belt success goes, he stole elements of Bernie’s populist rhetoric and successfully conned just enough voters into believing him. In contrast, HRC’s stated opposition to TPP must’ve rung hollow and false (in fact, I’d say Trump’s most effective debate lines were when he said “oh, so you’re going against Obama? You’re going against your husband?” - exactly the kind of argument to destroy HRC’s credibility with trade-deal-hating rust belt voters)
