And Now, a Joyous Tiny Desk Concert by Chicano Batman

Felix Contreras | April 17, 2017 - These guys had me at their name.

Ever since I heard the first EP back in 2009 I’ve watched Chicano Batman grow, with a sound that perfectly captures dark lounges, quinceñera dances, car shows and backyard parties.

Lots of other folks have heard something in this music — since that debut the band has played some of the biggest outdoor music festivals for diverse crowds around the country.

The magic of a band like this is in the details, and their performance here allows us to fall into the non-stop groove and passion of a sound that gets better and better with each performance. See for yourself.

Sorry, but Hasan Minhaj isn’t very funny. He’s bombing.

It’s too bad. There’s a great opportunity here, with Drumpf off tooting his own horn in Bumfuck, PA.

After showing a video of Trump praising Fox and Friends and a clip with Steve Doocy going “wow, what do you think of that!” Samantha Bee said: A 70 year old white guy from Queens watches Fox News. Stop the Presses!

Yep, Fox News created Trump and Trump is a Fox News junkie.

Interesting. Samantha Bee should have the gig. She’s doing really well skewering the media in her special.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she’d already made plans to do her gig by the time they asked her and so she wasn’t available.

Of course my knowledge of the timelines involved is such that I could be completely wrong.

I watched Hasan Minhaj’s WHCD gig. He landed some zingers and skewered the big cable news outlets pretty good. And he admitted that it was a thankless job that no one wanted and that it was one of the weirdest moments of his professional career.

Neither would I.

We are in that great dark green and yellow blotch in the middle of the country, with rain falling hard and without stopping. Our farm creek is out everywhere, but so far I am lucky. I’ve got power, and even some satellite internet. This whole section of west central Illinois is under water. Blah!

re: #180 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Our lawn consists of juniper bushes in the front and concrete around some tree landscaping in the back. mr. klys did not want a high maintenance lawn. (I keep fantasizing about changing it to something else low maintenance but…)

I’d love to put in some raised beds in the backyard, but the reality is that I have no idea how long we’re going to stay here and the dirt would be a decent chunk of $$$ so I opted against it for this year. If it looks like we’re still going to be here through next summer, I may work on it then and see about adding in a split to the irrigation pipe in the back that I installed with my dad so that I can put in some drip irrigation into there as well.

In the meantime, pots.

We had a lawn in front, but when the drought started, we ripped it out and covered it in mulch. One problem is that when MOST people do that, they put down landscape cloth, so that the weeds don’t grow. Not Mrs. FBW! No, she HATES landscape cloth, and insisted we’d just pull the weeds when they came up, till they finally gave up trying.

Turn out by ‘We’, she meant ME. So, this afternoon, I spent two hours pulling grass tufts. Enough to fill the Big Green Compost Bin from Recology. Probably 150# of that shit. This is after pulling TWO big green bins full of thistles in the back yard two weeks ago!

I like weeding better than gardening, oddly enough. Weeding is satisfying. It restores order and gives one the brief hope that one can actually control something.

Yes, actually, though I’ve been hesitant to say so until now. She was only in her mid-50s - that’s *way* the fuck too young to just die in your sleep. I can only assume it was due to some underlying condition, perhaps complications from the aneurysm that nearly killed her a few years before…in which case, were the signs her doctors missed, something they should have looked for but didn’t? That’s always going to bother me.

And don’t even get me started on the fact that she’s gone while the oxygen thieves polluting the current US gov are very much alive…

Because of the drought, some of the college lawns around here were left unwatered for a couple of years, so they’re now studies in various wild shrubs — grasses and other plants — and every space is different. I find myself liking them at least as well as boring grass plots, so you might consider not pulling them after all.

(I always hated weeding.)

People like me are in the most vulnerable position: Apostates from the Righteous Path, people who have abandoned evangelicalism and hard-core right-wing politics and who have embraced moderation in political and religious life. I expect both church and state to come down hard on people in my position sooner rather than later, but there’s no way in hell I’m going to just roll over and die.

I suspect me first: Lifelong liberal, lifelong atheist, living in an extremely conservative area and locally-well known.

Here’s an article discussing how various groups in France are shaking out in the runup to the second round of voting. The decision is being played as (my interpretation) “Macron is a generally bad choice, but Le Pen is decidedly more horrible. I’m voting for Macron.”

The former Socialist mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, told RTL radio he would follow his party’s call to vote for Macron, reminding listeners: “Hitler was elected by universal suffrage. I don’t want to make anyone feel guilty. I’m calling for responsibility, conscience … and generosity. At this given moment we have to put France before our old resentments.”

The conservative Les Républicains party, whose presidential candidate François Fillon was defeated in the first round, has also called for an electoral “barrage” against Le Pen, though some in its traditional Catholic right wing have drifted to the far right.

Even Macron’s arch-nemesis, sheep farmer José Bové, the European ecologist MP and anti-globalisation militant famous for once dismantling a McDonalds restaurant, said he would vote for the En Marche! candidate “without ambiguity or hesitation”. Bové said he had no time for “leftwing purists” like the hard-left firebrand, Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

theguardian.com

These people sound shittons more sensible than Young Mr. Douthat at the NYTimes, who doesn’t seem to have a problem with Marine Le Pen becoming president of France. At least these people understand that Macron is not a great choice, but miles better than an unrepentant Fascist.

It would appear that the various party leaders in France are urging their supporters to vote strategically in the French run-off: The choice between a former banker (who would not appeal much to the left or right) is far-and-away a superior choice to the (former) leader of the National Front.

Hopefully the French electorate can see what Donald Trump is doing here and reject that. The Netherlands already did.

Someone else here, when the news about CL first broke, remarked that she wouldn’t get to see America return to sanity :( (let’s leave aside the “none of us will” jokes for now).

As someone who’s not religious and doesn’t believe in any sort of afterlife, it’s especially upsetting for me to think of all the things she won’t live to see or experience - yet another indignity to heap on the sheer unfairness of it pile.

I try not to think of my own mortality too much, but when I do it always seems to come back to whether I’ll live long enough to see one of two things:

1) Discovery of extraterrestrial life
2) The end of civilization as we know it

I just can’t shake this weird, bizarre, not-at-all-based-in-reality feeling that the choice is either one or the other, and dammit, I want to know how the story ends…

The hard reality is that we, as a Democratic Party, have sent the political message that we do not care about them. Yes, in poll after poll, no matter the region of the country, our policy positions are viewed more favorably than the Republican position.

So, how is it we have made it clear to people in these areas we do care about them if they agree with us on most of the issues? Simple, we do not ask for their vote, we do not seek to represent them. In the last election cycle, 1,479 state legislative districts were not contested by the Democratic Party. Those districts represent around 117,000,000 constituents. We did not care enough about them to ask for their vote. Not contesting a seat is a powerful statement about your priorities, it is the most powerful statement of who a political party desires to represent.

This is what happens when news media outlets are interested in clickbait and eyeballs rather than journalism.

There were several smaller outlets and foreign sources that knew where the USS Carl Vinson was, as well as the Navy Department and the Department of Defense. No one bothered to check with them.

It didn’t help HR McMaster, James Mattis, and Donald Trump threw more red meat to the media rather than correcting them. (I doubt Trump could have corrected them, but the others could.)

It was very concerning to hear the NY Times published an article supporting Le Pen. That is a true outrage especially after their hiring of Bret Stephens. But then I actually saw the column and was reassured: it was just the usual nonsense from Ross Douthat; if we are fortunate perhaps this would be the time for the NY Times to announce that Douthat is leaving. After all, there is no need for his presence now there is a new right wing columnist writing nonsense for the paper.

re: #72 Hecuba’s daughter

If I want right-wing opinion I can read my local paper, which discontinued George Will’s column as too liberal.

From a news outlet such as the New York Times I would want accurate and factual reporting. In opinion pieces (which by definition aren’t news), I would still want them to present facts with their opinion pieces (not something like that climate denialist derp they published the other day).

Free speech does not equal giving every crackpot a platform in your privately-owned newspaper.

Conservatives say they would punish only doctors. With new medicines, there are none.

You’ve heard the stories of the coat hanger and the back alley, those bloody days before Roe v. Wade. Sen. Patrick J. Leahy told one recently at the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Neil M. Gorsuch. As a Vermont prosecutor in 1968, three years before the court struck down state abortion bans, cops woke Leahy up in the middle of the night, because “a young co-ed nearly died from bleeding from a botched abortion.” The senator’s drift was clear: If confirmed, Gorsuch could cast a vote, or several, to bring back those horrors (if not the archaic phrase “co-ed”).

This is by now a rehearsed conflict. Mention dying women to antiabortion activists, and they insist that women weren’t prosecuted for having unlawful abortions before Roe v. Wade and won’t be if abortion is banned. Women, in this formulation, are victims of cruel abortionists. Indeed, Leahy wound up prosecuting the seedy go-between in that case, not the woman.

Trump gave away the game (we already knew it, though) that the anti-abortion foetus cult really wants to punish women and abolish contraceptives.

As far as medications that facilitate an abortion (or prevent a pregnancy), they don’t mean much if you can’t get them. (Most pharmacies in this area do not carry any contraceptives or drugs like Plan B. You can’t force a private business to carry a product it doesn’t want to sell.)

The counter to that is a YouTube video (I can’t find it now) where a same-sex equality ordinance was being debated by a Missouri city council. A minister rose up to speak about the bill, reading all the evils this would cause, then noted at the end he had the wrong speech, that was the one given about Jim Crow in the past, noting they were making precisely the same arguments.

How Western Civilisation Could Collapse (Goes to the BBC)

Essentially the argument is rising income inequality will first destroy the middle class and poor, followed by the wealthy who are supported by them.

Good to see the BBC is getting on board with what liberals in the USA have been saying ever since Ronald Reagan was elected - “trickle-down” economics doesn’t work.

That economic stratification may lead to collapse on its own, on the other hand, came as more of a surprise to Motesharrei and his colleagues. Under this scenario, elites push society toward instability and eventual collapse by hoarding huge quantities of wealth and resources, and leaving little or none for commoners who vastly outnumber them yet support them with labour. Eventually, the working population crashes because the portion of wealth allocated to them is not enough, followed by collapse of the elites due to the absence of labour. The inequalities we see today both within and between countries already point to such disparities.

Why is the FCC Boss Being Such a Jerk?

The move was not unexpected [to end net neutrality]. But what was surprising was how FCC chair Pai decided to relay it: rather than outline the logical policy reasons for why such a big change was necessary, he instead embarked on a fact-free, frequently misleading and highly partisan speech that bordered on a rant, even going so far as to mock and dismiss anyone who opposed his idea.

Interest in the decision was significant but rather than talk to any number of telecom policy experts or reporters about the topic, Pai instead decided to give an exclusive interview with Breitbart - the hard-right website masterminded by odious presidential Svengali Steve Bannon. An odd choice.

Pai has been avoiding interviews for months with journalists who cover communications, technology, and policy, only turning up to softball interviews with outlets that he knows will praise him or light TV shows more interested in fashion trends than telecom policy.

Decided to brush up on my E&M after many years have passed since I last studied it… and I realize how very boring the textbooks are.

No wonder I didn’t like it the first time around.

In my later life now, I have come to believe that science education has been long forced to be too many things without really being the most important thing: interesting.

E&M ought to be taught with emphasis first on phenomena, I propose. Go through the history of discoveries, and unfold the problems as they naturally occurred in time.

Instead, textbooks all too often start with eigenvectors, Green’s functions, etc.

As much as I like mathematics, I think that’s just fundamentally wrong.

And even for intro-physics, which starts with basic calculus instead of all that messy Bessel function stuff… if you really want to engage a young mind then present them with problems, hands-on demonstrations, and such.

Not only should evolution be taught, but I believe it should be central to the curriculum, as I believe biology needs to play a much bigger role in the education of children.

Now that is hot topic for two reasons - evolution, and sex. Both subjects seem to upset some parents. Perhaps most parents in some part of this country.

Today, shortly after Sonny Perdue was sworn in as the U.S. Agriculture Secretary, U.S. Senator Ben Sasse invited the new secretary to Nebraska and urged him to “be a champion for free trade” inside the administration.

“As you assume your new position in the Administration, I call on you to be a champion for free trade,” wrote Sasse. “Your leadership on these important issues is vital now more than ever because the Administration has provided little certainty that they understand the importance of free trade policy and its many benefits for America’s farmers, ranchers, and small businesses. Specifically, I call on you to prioritize the following critical areas: 1) Advocate for free trade policies in any consideration of the North American Free Trade Agreement; 2) Advocate for U.S. leadership in the Pacific markets post Trans-Pacific Partnership; 3) Prioritize bilateral trade deals; and 4) Expand market access and make America more competitive.”

Reminds me of Trump and how it is not about the subject at hand but how awesome his leadership is to allow this upsurge in attendance. I guess the drivers and race teams should be glad Vlad is allowing this.

And there is Vlad on the winners platform handing out the Trophy’s and he is ducking out fast so he doesn’t get sprayed with champagne. Guys on TV just warned drivers to not spray little Vlad.

Hmmm. I have a feeling Trump will want to be in Austin Texas in November for the U.S. Grand Prix.

Oh dear lord, that was awful:

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Honestly, John, I’m okay. But why didn’t Podesta and the Democrats, why didn’t they allow the F.B.I. to eject the server? They hired some company who somebody said some pretty bad things about, to go and check their server and give the information. So they were hacked. Why didn’t they — the Democrats allow the F.B.I.? They told the F.B.I., “We are not going to allow you to do it.” Why did they do that? Why did they do that, John? Why wouldn’t they let the F.B.I. go in and check? And by the way, why didn’t the F.B.I. complain about it?

JOHN DICKERSON: Mr. President, I think we’re going to have to end it there. [Because interviewing you is fucking pointless.]

Amelia Molitor’s Story Is Better, And More Important, Than Joe Mixon’s

With one right hook to her face, Amelia Molitor’s life changed. The girl who’d grown up a Sooner through and through - whose family had been Oklahoma season ticket-holders growing up, had matriculated to the only school she ever dreamed of attending. She’d been an active participating in the Oklahoma University community, joining clubs, attending sporting events, and working to help pay her way through.

One night in Norman, a nice, although maybe not ideal college life was interrupted. Some words. A shove. And ultimately a punch that’s still reverberating.

Amelia lay prone on the floor of a place called Pickleman’s, her famous football-playing assailant having long since bailed, friends and onlookers trying to help and comfort, and her face in a mangled mess of broken jaw and cheek bones.

From there, things got worse. Physically. Eight hours of surgery. A jaw wired shut for weeks. A steady liquid diet. Numbness in her face for six months.

… .

The guy who punched her will play for the Cincinnati Bengals this fall.

MTP had an interview with both U.S. Senators from Maine…Angus King and Susan Collins. At the end of it Chucky said that wasn’t so bad and maybe others will see it is good to have people from across the isles on and speaking with each other.

King is a workable independent like Sanders* but is not a Democrat. Maybe Chucky’s words would mean more if there was an actual Democrat.

And now his stupid panel is running down Democrats for going too far left on social issues and Trump spoke for the common man.**

Gawd, some of this stuff is just really bumming me the fuck out. Everyone is right, everyone is wrong and everyone is hunkered down in their own foxholes.

* What’s with New England Senators being independent.

** So sick of this common man bullshit. He spoke for the ignorant common man that doesn’t know crap and is finding out it was crap.

Arrrrrggghh! I need to give up watching politics on TV!!! They are not helping. But it is obvious ALL of this is the Democrats problem. I guess it was up to them to stop Trump and since they didn’t they own it. Hell, that’s the way Sanders thinks.

Reading that reminds me first of high school where the only thing the school cared about was having a winning football team. Why? Because in Western Pennsylvania, Football is the REAL religion. High School football players are treated like Gods.

Then going to Pitt and seeing it taken to an even further extreme. Football players rarely in class but getting A’s and B’s. They’re eating at the local steakhouse while we were eating dorm food. Players would beat up people and the school would come to their defense as well as the local media. Players got girls pregnant and alumni would take care of arranging the abortion.

And then I see picture of my High School reunions which I never would go to and see all those high school jocks who now realize that their life peaked at 18 and from then it was all downhill…

Err, what textbook are you using? The only texts that *start* with Green’s functions are graduate level, which kind of assume that you’ve gotten the historical motivations out of the way earlier.

As much as I like mathematics, I think that’s just fundamentally wrong.

And even for intro-physics, which starts with basic calculus instead of all that messy Bessel function stuff… if you really want to engage a young mind then present them with problems, hands-on demonstrations, and such.

Female former border patrol agent alleges the agency is rife with sexual assault on female agents, moral failure, and corruption.
crooksandliars.com

I am proud of my accomplishments as a former federal agent with the Border Patrol. Less than 5% of agents are women. That has been a consistent statistic for over twenty years. To say that the Patrol is not fond of women is being kind. To graduate and last six years is even more rare as most women drop out much sooner.

But with that pride in serving my country comes a fairly equal amount of shame. Like any other law enforcement agency, the USBP likes to promote the image of honor and integrity. The only problem is that they have none of that. They are instead an agency systemically full of corruption, abuse, hypocrisy, racism and sexism. While it’s true that there are a “few bad apples” in every agency, the USBP is in reality the opposite; there are instead a “few good apples.”

That was James Watt’s excuse for not looking after the environment.

Brings back long suppressed memories when my Aunt made me go to her Foursquare church whose Pulpit Pimp Preacher always filled his BS sermons with the latest GOP talking points.

One day, James Watt shows up and gave his “testimony” that there was no reason to conserve any natural resources because JC and his Sonshine Band were going to return to Earth in less than a year and when JC returns he will make all the resources that the faithful need.

I sat in that pew and tuned out the bullshit to the best of my ability as my aunt stood up and tried to outshout every other brainwashed fool in that church…

“Talk to any federal law enforcement agent aside from Border Patrol agents, and they will tell you that USBP is by far the most corrupt. This is in part due to the the minimal hiring standards which have become more and more lenient as administrations have tried to increase the numbers. Unlike other agencies, Patrol agents are not required to have a high school degree or even job experience. A valid driver’s license and passing grade on a drug test and criminal background check is it.

That is to say a background check must be started. While on duty, I saw other agents fired because their background checks finally came back as failing only after they had graduated the academy and were assigned to a station. These agents had been on duty and armed without clearing their backgrounds. The Patrol does not administer polygraphs or psychological tests like most other agencies. Many agents are in fact in the Patrol because no other agency would accept them.”

Holy shit.

Giving up cable news will do wonders for your health. It feels as if MSNBC is swerving to the Right. Not sure why since they’re not going to draw away the Rightwingers who are enamored with Fox News. Seems like a fool’s errand to try to compete for the angry White Working Class viewers who swear by Hannity.

I only watch Rachel and Lawrence and a little Chris Hayes but that isn’t all the time. And I like Joy Reid but am too busy doing stuff on weekends to catch. I was a long time MTP on NBC watcher and it has been difficult to shake it.

I know there has always been us and them thinking but the media was better at explaining what was going on. Now the media seems to be hands off let ‘em say what they want and we’ll watch where the chips fall and report on that.

There is zero political education going on and we are paying for it.

We already know that, while Dems’ and independents’ view of the economy is largely the same now as a few months ago, Republicans’ has jumped YOOGELY.

Similarly, while Democrats’ and Independents’ views of the war against ISIS have stayed relatively constant, Republican’s surge from 28% ‘going well’ to 72% - with no new facts on the ground.

For your perusal, a bizarre coincidence from television.

From 1957 to 1959, CBS aired a Western called “Trackdown.” The show was about a Texas Ranger who went from town to town saving people.

en.wikipedia.org

One episode was called “The End of the World.”

imdb.com

In that episode, a travelling snake-oil salesman named Trump offers to save the town by building a wall around it. The character Trump in the episode frequently threatens to sue people. The Ranger has to convince the town that Trump is conning the town. The sheriff doesn’t like the Ranger and will not listen to him telling the sheriff Trump is a known con man.

Agreed, it has nothing to do with browser compatibility. I wish Twitter had implemented that better though, pretty sure it confuses most people at first. I’d have made it so the text and time data appeared in a shadow box in the lower third of the still image and then disappear when the play button is pressed.

It’s a basic UX problem, on Twitter itself people almost always read the tweet text before clicking the video. With this embedding scheme they’ve encouraged the reverse, so a lot of people are clicking on the video without knowing the intended context.
