Keep in mind, there were a lot of Republicans that wanted Colin Powell to run for president at various points. And a few that wanted to see Condi Rice run as well (or at least be the VP nominee). The Falklands is complicated, no doubt about it. But the majority of the Falklanders prefer to be with the British over the Argentines. And who can blame them? They enjoy high living standards compared to the average Argentine, they get to drive on the left side of the road, and they get to drive around in 4WD vehicles such as Land Rover Defenders or Land Cruiser diesels that wouldn’t be able to in the motherland.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) is pushing an amendment to severely curtail special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.
DeSantis has put forward a provision that would halt funding for Mueller’s probe six months after the amendment’s passage. It also would prohibit Mueller from investigating matters that occurred before June 2015, when Trump launched his presidential campaign.
Because every criminal investigation can be wrapped up in 6 months…and Trump obviously became a brand new human being when he came down the escalator.

The Targaryeans were well known for incest - Dany’s parents were brother and sister. And Westeros has a very different definition of incest than we do - their’s is a more medieval definition. For example, Tywin Lannister’s wife (the mother of Cersei, Tyrion, and Jamie) was also his cousin. I’m also curious if this bit about Jon’s real name being Aegon is how they’re going to adapt the Aegon storyline from the books.
All that said, I’ve been kind of underwhelmed by the last two seasons. I feel like once they lost the training wheels of published source material and had to do their own thing, they kind of rushed things and otherwise did stuff that didn’t fit with the character development. That really doesn’t bode well for their proposed new show Confederate, with no source material.

Several jobs ago I worked at a call center. The management of this place was horrid. This was back in Canada and one particular March day we got THREE FEET of snow dumped on us in one day. Now Canadians can deal with a hell of a lot of snow but that much coming down that fast will cause problems no matter how used to winter you are.
So I called work and said I wasn’t coming in. The manager who answered had the nerve to give me lip about it and act like I was just being fucking lazy because I didn’t want to go in.
Guess what?
The people who did go in that day got STUCK IN THE PARKING LOT that night because the snow was so high and the plows hadn’t made it out there yet. So yeah, I’m such a lazy ass for not going in..
Oh and another story. I used to work at a retail chain as a third shift manager. I was scheduled to work an open to close shift (900 am - 900pm) Saturday of Memorial Day weekend because the Store Manager and Assistant Manager were off and hey, extra money.
Well unfortunately I got a nasty stomach bug the night before and could barely move by the next morning. I called my manager to see if he could contact someone to fill in for me as I saw no chance of being able to go in. Of course he and the AM were out of town so he more or less told me tough beans, I HAD to go in, even going so far as to say I could just sit at a desk in the stock room for most of the day if I wanted, the important thing was I be there to unlock the doors and open the registers in the morning and then close up everything at night.
He didn’t even give me the option of leaving and coming back which I would have gladly done. So I chugged down some Pepto bismol and went in. Thankfully my staff was awesome that day and carried the load for me.
That’s what sucks about hourly jobs. If you don’t go in, you don’t get paid and they often don’t give much leeway where illnesses and injuries are concerned. I know a guy who worked with his wrist in a thick brace for years because he could never afford to take enough time off to allow it to heal properly.

Are we sure about that? I know that is part of the typical pardon process. But I’m also not entirely sure it’s required, and knowing Trump, I could see him not requiring an admission of guilt on this one, especially since he keeps going with the whole “he was just doing his job” bullshit.

26 years after the fall of the USSR, it can be difficult to remember or understand the driving force behind a lot of the US’s antidemocratic actions during the Cold War. When we learned how hollowed out the Soviets were by the end, it was a shock. We really had expected this conflict to go on for decades more of a balance of power. This expectation drove all of foreign policy - even the Arab-Israeli conflict. So, we ended up supporting friendly dictators like Pinochet over potential Soviet allies like Allende.

I don’t know a whole lot about Calley other than the massacre he was convicted of, and in searching I can’t really find anything saying Carter supported that. The closest I get is a citation from Wikipedia, quoting someone else named Bourne, who said:

For me, one of my great struggles is rectifying my mom’s father whom I’m named after who made a lot of great economic points about how a lot of the world’s problems are rooted in greed with the fact that he quite honestly was racially prejudiced. An interesting side note but history tells us that American soldiers in the Korean War were furious when Truman fired MacArthur. My above mentioned Grandpa always told my brother and I that he was happy when that happened and even happier when he got home. Yeah. I hate to endorse anything Niall Ferguson wrote, but I’d just add that the dehumanization was pretty mutual. Check out Unbroken (the book, at least; I never saw the movie) for some very nasty behavior on the part of Japanese jailers and the like. A couple of my parents’ friends were forced to work on the Burma Railway (see Bridge of the River Kwai) and it obviously broke them, though they lived through it.
But then my dad, a Brit who was in Europe, never said anything about his WWII experiences except to note that he “walked up Italy.” When videos arrived, he bought only one, Oh! What a Lovely War — and insisted that everyone who visited watch it. Check it out, I’m sure it’s around somewhere.

Since the flooding was so extensive, a lot of it was in areas where flood insurance was not required. Apparently a very high percentage (2/3?) of the homes damaged were not covered by flood insurance.
So, in addition to an almost certain lack of qualified people available to rebuild homes, an awful lot of people just won’t have the money to do it. This has got to be a major hit to the area’s economy, to say nothing of the loss to the people who can’t rebuild.

The bigger picture remains though of what to do with tens of thousands of displaced people. This means short term housing, supplies etc. Then the rebuilding has to be undertaken, and frankly I don’t understand why someone would want to rebuild in any areas of Harris county which have now been flooded on several occasions the past few years.

The place itself is probably dry, but the access roads to it are mostly flooded. It’s right on the SW Freeway (I-59). Most of the people who need shelter are miles away, or would have to cross a lot of flooded streets (coming from Meyerland).

Pretty good analysis, I think. There was also a part—maybe majority—of the population that came of age during the war and turned pacifist, some even anti-emperor, after the war. They are very old now. I know people on both sides, but the pacifists were of course more likely to talk with me about the war.

I’m near Biloxi myself. Thanks to Katrina (yes, Mississippi got fucked up too, it wasn’t JUST New Orleans) people around here are well prepared. We may see some localized flooding but the worst case scenario I saw earlier was between 8-10”. That should be manageable.
I’m off work for the next two days at least (not due to the storm, my normal off days just happened to line up nicely).
