Since I killed the last thread I’ll repost it here. Bro-in-law just talked to his wife, she says she is fine and wants him to keep safe. His renters in the house he owns next door have parents in Danbury, which is why they all went there.
—-
My brother-in-law just E-mailed me. As the water continues to rise in his house, he decided it was time to go. He has left Alvin and is now is at a friend’s house in Danbury. He points out the area where they have opened the two dams are very wealthy homes.
He points out that all of Houston’s petrochemical industry is now shut down, but as a significant portion of the nation’s refining capacity gasoline is likely to go up in price.
His ‘65 Thunderbird is safe on higher ground (gotta remember the important stuff). His Miata ingested a lot of water escaping and he thinks it will need repairs. He moved everything he could to the second floor.
My sister-in-law is still in Russia since she can’t get home (and right now that would probably not be a good idea).
He says his rain gauges say he’s gotten thirty inches of rain so far.
This projected Moscow deal would have been a licensing deal for Trump: i.e. no entrepreneurial risk - only a payment for his name.

I just read the craziest thing on Pajamas Media (no link for them):
Now Trump wouldn’t call it running. He thinks he is fighting back. His deliberate provocations, two Tuesdays in a row, one in an insane-looking press conference and another at the most disgusting (un-)presidential rally most of us have ever seen, are designed to foment discord - to divide, even if the divisions become so heated that violence might ensue.
What’s the goal? It’s a way to make his supporters even more angrily defensive on his behalf, and thus to add even more combustible elements into the mix, as if somehow Mueller will be warded off by an angry show of pro-Trump mob strength. Trump seems instinctively to believe that even if his overall number of supporters drops, the sheer passion of his remaining ones will somehow act as a deterrent to his pursuers.
Mueller will not be deterred.
Nor should he be.
And the rest of us will not be fooled. We know Trump is a hollow man. We know he is standing and trying to take his swings from rapidly eroding soil. And we know (forgive the mixed metaphors) that special prosecutors, unlike golf opponents on a course he himself owns, give no mulligans.

Though in fairness, she did get sandbagged by her own party: who encouraged her to run against Hillary Clinton for the Senate in 2006: then dumped her (since she polled at 30-62) for another GOP shlep (who lost 31-67). Just goes to show….
Jeanine Pirro did have a promising career at one time: as it turned out, though “fake judge on Fox” is about where she belongs…
I loved the way she came out to announce her candidacy, but had misplaced a page of her speech.

“The IRA wasn’t really after the British,” Mr. O’Callaghan told the Los Angeles Times in 1997, recounting his disillusionment. “It was the guy down the road who had the better land that his ancestors had taken from the Catholics. The bitterness was there all the time, rooted and deep. What they really wanted to do was to murder their neighbors. It was tribalism.”

A quick look in on the investigation(s):
“…shutdowns are a major cause of “abnormal” emission events, according to a 2012 report from the Environmental Integrity Project. Short-term impacts of these events can be “substantial,” because “upsets or sudden shutdowns can release large plumes of sulfur dioxide or toxic chemicals in just a few hours, exposing downwind communities to peak levels of pollution that are much more likely to trigger asthma attacks and other respiratory systems.”

Republican voters aren’t going to let a woman let alone a woman whose parents were Indian immigrants become their party’s nominee.
I would not make as bold a statement. Not in this new internet social media era of politics.
The Republicans will do anything they can to hold power. If a woman is shown to be a great candidate and has good polling, they will run her. They can lie and deceive the voting public with a women as well a man.
Remember Sarah Palin.
Compared to Palin she would be seen as a great conservative woman and the right woman to be this nation’s first female president. If she is named Secretary of State, then there will be the comparisons to Hillary too. If Hillary was ready, Nikki is moar!

Keep in mind, there were a lot of Republicans that wanted Colin Powell to run for president at various points. And a few that wanted to see Condi Rice run as well (or at least be the VP nominee). Hell, there was even talk at one point of an amendment that would have allowed Arnold to run for president. The Falklands is complicated, no doubt about it. But the majority of the Falklanders prefer to be with the British over the Argentines. And who can blame them? They enjoy high living standards compared to the average Argentine, they get to drive on the left side of the road, and they get to drive around in 4WD vehicles such as Land Rover Defenders or Land Cruiser diesels that wouldn’t be able to in the motherland.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) is pushing an amendment to severely curtail special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.
DeSantis has put forward a provision that would halt funding for Mueller’s probe six months after the amendment’s passage. It also would prohibit Mueller from investigating matters that occurred before June 2015, when Trump launched his presidential campaign.

Thoughts below the fold…
The Targaryeans were well known for incest - Dany’s parents were brother and sister. And Westeros has a very different definition of incest than we do - their’s is a more medieval definition. For example, Tywin Lannister’s wife (the mother of Cersei, Tyrion, and Jamie) was also his cousin. I’m also curious if this bit about Jon’s real name being Aegon is how they’re going to adapt the Aegon storyline from the books.
All that said, I’ve been kind of underwhelmed by the last two seasons. I feel like once they lost the training wheels of published source material and had to do their own thing, they kind of rushed things and otherwise did stuff that didn’t fit with the character development. That really doesn’t bode well for their proposed new show Confederate, with no source material.

The New Gilded Age: “Doesn’t matter how dangerous it is out there, your ass is expected to be here on time or you start looking for a new job.”
Several jobs ago I worked at a call center. The management of this place was horrid. This was back in Canada and one particular March day we got THREE FEET of snow dumped on us in one day. Now Canadians can deal with a hell of a lot of snow but that much coming down that fast will cause problems no matter how used to winter you are.
So I called work and said I wasn’t coming in. The manager who answered had the nerve to give me lip about it and act like I was just being fucking lazy because I didn’t want to go in.
Guess what?
The people who did go in that day got STUCK IN THE PARKING LOT that night because the snow was so high and the plows hadn’t made it out there yet. So yeah, I’m such a lazy ass for not going in..
Oh and another story. I used to work at a retail chain as a third shift manager. I was scheduled to work an open to close shift (900 am - 900pm) Saturday of Memorial Day weekend because the Store Manager and Assistant Manager were off and hey, extra money.
Well unfortunately I got a nasty stomach bug the night before and could barely move by the next morning. I called my manager to see if he could contact someone to fill in for me as I saw no chance of being able to go in. Of course he and the AM were out of town so he more or less told me tough beans, I HAD to go in, even going so far as to say I could just sit at a desk in the stock room for most of the day if I wanted, the important thing was I be there to unlock the doors and open the registers in the morning and then close up everything at night.
He didn’t even give me the option of leaving and coming back which I would have gladly done. So I chugged down some Pepto bismol and went in. Thankfully my staff was awesome that day and carried the load for me.
That’s what sucks about hourly jobs. If you don’t go in, you don’t get paid and they often don’t give much leeway where illnesses and injuries are concerned. I know a guy who worked with his wrist in a thick brace for years because he could never afford to take enough time off to allow it to heal properly.

He also approved the sale of fighter jets to Suharto’s regime in Indonesia and continued on with the official endorsement of Indonesian sovereignty over East Timor. The occupation of East Timor took the lives of 200,000 East Timorese Catholics from 1975-1999, to demonstrate how our support of Indonesia’s illegal occupation of a former Portuguese colony was catastrophic for those who experienced it.

Yeah, Joe should have read or his lawyer advised him of the fine print on that pardon that accepting it was effectively an admission of guilt. And a pardon only covers criminal charges, it does not immunize him from civil suits.

Are we sure about that? I know that is part of the typical pardon process. But I’m also not entirely sure it’s required, and knowing Trump, I could see him not requiring an admission of guilt on this one, especially since he keeps going with the whole “he was just doing his job” bullshit.

Don’t disagree. It may seem like singling out Carter on this one, but I assure you it is not the case. Reagan, Nixon, and LBJ I have more criticism of than Carter.

Fair enough. The one thing that troubles me though, in all honesty, is this: if you don’t repent on defending a war criminal as a Governor and arming Suharto, would that negate the good work he has done later on? Or do they ends justify the means in this case?

26 years after the fall of the USSR, it can be difficult to remember or understand the driving force behind a lot of the US’s antidemocratic actions during the Cold War. When we learned how hollowed out the Soviets were by the end, it was a shock. We really had expected this conflict to go on for decades more of a balance of power. This expectation drove all of foreign policy - even the Arab-Israeli conflict. So, we ended up supporting friendly dictators like Pinochet over potential Soviet allies like Allende.

Sure, but what was said up the thread was:
Man I still can’t support Carter, no matter what. His blind defence of William Calley will always be a thorn in my side.
So I’m guessing there is no president worthy of support, none at all.
I don’t know a whole lot about Calley other than the massacre he was convicted of, and in searching I can’t really find anything saying Carter supported that. The closest I get is a citation from Wikipedia, quoting someone else named Bourne, who said:
When Lieutenant William Calley was convicted in a military trial and sentenced to life for his role in the My Lai Massacre in South Vietnam, a politically polarizing issue, Carter avoided paying direct tribute to Calley. He instead instituted “American Fighting Man’s Day” and asked Georgians to drive for a week with their lights on in support of the military.
Avoided paying direct tribute to Calley to me doesn’t mean the same thing as supported Lt. Calley.
I really must go now. There’s a tongue-lashing to prepare for over water. See y’all later.

I think with Carter, we’ve gotten to see the struggles of a good man in the job of the Presidency. You have to make choices between two bad things, because The Right Thing isn’t available, or expedient. There are a lot of reasons why Carter wasn’t a good President, but not being a good PERSON is not one of them.

You may have seen some conversation on Twitter about Osteen not opening his church.
He’s a swindler, but even if he opened it, the surrounding streets are flooded and I don’t think many could get there. You can see “Lakewood Church” in the middle of this, just north of flooded I-59.
Houston Chronicle is compiling a flooded streets map here:

The same ones who still bitch and whine about Jane Fonda to this day.
What she did is peanuts compared to what happened in My Lai. That was a true betrayal of American military ethics and values, not an actress posing around some anti-aircraft artillery.
And this is coming from someone who used to believe she deserved to be treated like a pariah, even once regretfully cheering the veteran who spat on her at a book-signing event in 2005.

Yeah I just don’t get what these people choose to get angry at. I understand why people were upset at Fonda but My Lai should have infuriated them. If you truly believed in the cause of stopping Communism’s spread, how on earth could you defend that? Too many people in our country want to view our country’s history the same way many revisionists in other countries do. When I was talking with my brother today, he brought up how Trump and others are trying the slippery slope thing to discredit CSA statue critics, he said that these people need to think about how an African-American may view George Washington and our founders who no doubt viewed PoC as their inferior.

Yeah this wasn’t unfortunate collateral damage, but the deliberate targeting of civilians by an established military force. Women and children were deliberately targeted by those in uniform. A uniform that many of us hold dear to, and see the message it upholds.
Fonda to her credit has repented countless times (which explains why I’ve softened my stance on her significantly in the years since), but she still is a declared enemy to veterans.
It was over 4 decades ago, she didn’t kill anybody nor did she torture any POW’s, get over it and move on already.
I just remember when the torture came out in the Bush years. All that rationalizing. All that rationalizing for things that would have horrified and rightfully so if we knew the Taliban, Al Queda, insurgents, or anyone was doing to our guys. I remember reading about Japanese treatment of Allied POWs in WWII and it horrified me. I get that we weren’t saints then either but damn.

First, the civilian command defines the mission, defines what ‘winning’ means, and defines what is and is not allowable to achieve the mission. An interesting side note but history tells us that American soldiers in the Korean War were furious when Truman fired MacArthur. My above mentioned Grandpa always told my brother and I that he was happy when that happened and even happier when he got home. If one had met my Grandpa, you’d think he’d be perfect fodder for the Reagan Dems but he never fell for that shit I think in large part due to his aversion to warfare and as he liked to joke with us “Reagan wasn’t even that good of an actor.”

The media’s job isn’t to write a glowing report of everything the military does. The media’s job is to report the truth and they did that in Vietnam and a lot of hardcore assholes didn’t like that. Thing that fascinates me about war and warfare is how different many people can come out from it. Mentioning my Grandpa again but he was pretty much a pacifist because of it. He never protested Vietnam or Iraq but I knew he worried for those young men and women. Others though came out of it hawkish than ever.

It was much worse in the Pacific Theater:
As Niall Ferguson pointed out in his 2006 book, The War of the World: Twentieth-Century Conflict and the Descent of the West, while discussing this very photograph of young Natalie Nickerson and the Japanese skull: “Allied troops often regarded the Japanese in the same way that Germans regarded Russians—as Untermenschen. Boiling the flesh off enemy skulls to make souvenirs was a not uncommon practice. Ears, bones and teeth were also collected.”
The difference between #PodestaUkraine and any-Trumpkin-you-want/Russia is simple. The former wasn’t working with a declared ENEMY gov’t.

I keep coming back to — in the first Gulf War, Iraqis surrendered whole battalions at a time. It was an easy win for us, because the opposition was happy to lay down their arms. We only lost a few dozen KIA that war. Ever since Abu Grahib, they’ll fight to the death, and take as many of us as possible with them. More than 4000 so far.

Yeah: major differences, though. It was WWII: dead German or Italian soldiers were usually considered just “dead” casualties: to be counted and buried. Japanese casualties were very often looked on as merely potential souvenirs.
(Though Betty Homefront in that picture definitely looks unsure as to how to thank her boyfriend for the gift of that “paperweight” he sent her….)

His discussion of ‘winning’ is the giveaway - he’s thinking in strictly tactical terms. You win by defeating the enemy on the battlefield. Strategically, you can win all the battles, even the war, and still lose.
I’ve had people claim that the Tet Offensive was a HUGE defeat for NVN, because they spent so many lives doing it and didn’t permanently take any territory, and it left them depleted. What it did, though, was demonstrate not only that they could do that, but that the reason they could do it was that we were NOT winning ‘Hearts And Minds’, and probably never could. We’d have to stay there forever losing soldiers every day just to maintain the status quo. We could never ‘win’.

As many of the residences now flooded will be uninhabitable even when the water goes down, the number of people needing long term housing solutions will be large.
This is a problem which will need to be addressed and it will take a large amount of money.
The idea of neighbors helping neighbors is a nice heart-warming story during the actual flood, but afterwards then what? The billions and billions of dollars to rebuild has to come from somewhere. Will these same Texans support raising taxes to pay for it?

Since the flooding was so extensive, a lot of it was in areas where flood insurance was not required. Apparently a very high percentage (2/3?) of the homes damaged were not covered by flood insurance.
So, in addition to an almost certain lack of qualified people available to rebuild homes, an awful lot of people just won’t have the money to do it. This has got to be a major hit to the area’s economy, to say nothing of the loss to the people who can’t rebuild.

The nationalists are having difficulty covering up their raging stiffy over recent events, as they think the “threat” of a North Korean nuke will push public opinion towards “revising” or simply doing away with Article 9. In keeping with the theme upthread, we rubbed the noses of the “Good Germans” in the raw sewage of their atrocities and turned the camps into constant reminders of the crimes done in their names. But most of Japan’s worst crimes happened in foreign lands, so the average guy on the street could convince himself after the war that the atrocities were overblown or even totally fictional. Men like Abe grew up in a Japan that was in total denial and it shows.
Some generic guy being interviewed on KHOU just bagged on New Orleans, saying they (during Katrina) were just putting out their hands hoping someone would help them, but here in Texas they take care of themselves.
These people.

Not surprising that they would elevate themselves to a higher level due to some sense of superiority that is in their head.

Pretty good analysis, I think. There was also a part—maybe majority—of the population that came of age during the war and turned pacifist, some even anti-emperor, after the war. They are very old now. I know people on both sides, but the pacifists were of course more likely to talk with me about the war.
re: #392 electrotek
Dude was in a nice neighborhood next to a country club. They are experiencing the worst flooding in recent history, because the reservoirs have had to be opened up.

On another note, has anyone heard of this 4 part UK miniseries in the UK called The State on Channel 4? It’s supposed to air on National Geographic channel next month.

Iirc correctly, the boyfriend was a naval officer. When the story appeared in Life magazine, the Navy seized the skull and buried it. This kind of barbarism was not official policy but Japanese atrocities like Nanking and the Bataan Death March certainly were.
George Gigicos, the former White House director of advance who had organized the event as a contractor to the Republican National Committee. Trump later had his top security aide, Keith Schiller, inform Gigicos that he’d never manage a Trump rally again, according to three people familiar with the matter.
Big reason Trump was so angry in Phoenix? Before his rally, he watched coverage of the crowd size + that set him off https://t.co/QvyvQdVKcU

Remarkably wide area expected to get 6+ inches of rain during the rest of the week: the whole south Louisiana coast, western Louisiana up to near Shreveport, the eastern half of Arkansas, Memphis, Biloxi, Mobile…

I’m near Biloxi myself. Thanks to Katrina (yes, Mississippi got fucked up too, it wasn’t JUST New Orleans) people around here are well prepared. We may see some localized flooding but the worst case scenario I saw earlier was between 8-10”. That should be manageable.
I’m off work for the next two days at least (not due to the storm, my normal off days just happened to line up nicely).

The other funny thing about this? Trump was mad about the crowd size, yet repeatedly during the rally he complained that the ‘Fake News Media’ wouldn’t turn the cameras to show the YOOOGE crowd. He’s just lucky none of them did, although I’d bet that not doing so was part of the deal.

You wouldn’t expect him to not use his favorite well-worn lines about one of his base’s favorite targets would you?
Let’s not start using fact now.

And the fact that he watched reports on crowd size was probably the reason he kept downplaying the size of the crowd outside. He mentioned it a few times and every time he said something like ‘there aren’t many people outside.’
He was pissy because his supporters were outnumbered. He maybe better get used to that.

Don’t know. It was around 17:40 Pacific time, during the KHOU live feed on Facebook.
Nice, this means Osteen’s excuse that the Church was too flooded to provide shelter has been confirmed to be a complete fabrication.

I’m finally a little caught up on today’s threads and comments, tweets, links, etc.
Sure is a lot of “fake news” going around today.
Trump’s gonna have a lot to tweet about angrily tomorrow morning.
As for self reliance, I remember the guy in New Orleans who took it upon himself to bury his neighbor lady because no one else was available to do it.
The surviving low level circulation still presents well on the rainbow IR:
Most of the rain for Harris county will be over by this time tomorrow, but between now and then they are going to get enough rain to make sure all the reservoirs and lakes are overflowing to record levels.
It was only a year and half ago that Houston has very serious flooding. Now this.
It’s going to be a tough decision to make, but I think a strong ethical case can be made for not rebuilding in some locations.

Why? If the people of Houston are that delusional, we prolly need to know about it, since they’ll be resettled throughout the centre of the country for the next 3 years like Katrina evacuees…
