OK, you are given a choice between having Jacob Wohl or Jim Hoft as a cell mate?

One of my neighbors who was very sick died a couple of months ago. I found out about this today as I was headed for work. This was the neighbor that I substituted for at the primary election. It seems that I am now the defacto Minority Inspector. I am not sure what will happen after the election; my ward leader might want me to remain as a committee-person who fills in for a Minority Inspector.

Comcast/NBCU has paid Trump millions of dollars over the years. There is no reason to believe that Comcast/NBCU has any reason to back off of their relationship with Trump. Even when he was talking about running, there were discussions about him continuing his program on NBC.

Just because MSNBC has shows like Maddow does not mean the corporation is invested in the doing the right thing. To them, shows like Maddow are just ways to sell advertising to particular demographics.

For those who might be interested, state-wide elections were held today in Israel; Not the general elections for prime minister and the parliament (that mess is up next year, one way or another) but just the country’s equivalent of municipal/governorship elections.
As of this time, there have been two notable developments.
The first and most juicy is that in a surprise twist, the prominent candidate for mayor of Jerusalem, Ze’ev Elkin - a current government minister and personal favorite of PM Netanyahu who also had the support of other senior officials (including the outgoing mayor), lost in one hell of an upset.
A second round of elections will be held in two weeks between the two who got the most votes; Elkin came in fourth with just 19%.
The second development and notable takeaway was the very nature of this year’s elections. Today marked the first time that a municipal election was held as a shabbaton , a nation-wide day off. It was done primarily as a test to see if it would improve the voting turnout. Well, in the hours following the polls closing, statistics showed that the voting percentage was higher by 15-20% (!) than the previous municipal elections five years ago. So the answer is a definitive yes.
This is something I’ve always thought would be a good idea to implement in the US as well to boost voter turnout. While they have a different political system here, the results reinforce that notion considerably nonetheless.

It is part of their “all sides” coverage to make them feel they also are fair and balanced. I think they want to make that money on both sides rather than like Fox being all-in conservative. So, they give some time to everyone and try to straddle the money making line and call it all part of the news.

Some of the programs are good, others not. A few are still the most liberal TV you can find on big media.

OT - It’s check-in time.

So far the snowbird migration has been going very well. No problems passing through Canada even though I was packing a hunting rifle. The rifle was a 1946 Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage caliper that I bought in 1964. I was bringing it south to pass on to my son. Had the paper work filled out, paid the $25(CA) fee, and was sent on down the road. The U.S. Border Patrol did want to see the Canadian paperwork so the rifle is now in the U.S.system.

My wife had her cataract surgery and it was a big success. We were going to wait until February for her second eye but, being so successful on the first eye, she’s having the other eye done in mid November.

That means we’ll be hanging around Southern Oregon for the next 3 weeks. Right now we’re camping in an OR State Park just outside Brookings, OR. Really nice CG and I can see the ocean right out my window.

Did get our absentee ballots in the mail. Don Young has to go!! Did you hear where he nearly crushed his challenger’s hand giving her a “manly” handshake after their debate?

Since we’re just hanging about I’ll try to check in more often.

Chee

Looks like there’s some new lizards on board. If so, welcome everyone.

Whitey Bulger got whacked in prison today, too:

Within hours of his arrival at a federal prison in West Virginia, gangster James “Whitey” Bulger was beaten to death by inmates Tuesday in an attack that marks the final, brutal chapter in the life of one of Boston’s most notorious villains.

Two inmates were under investigation in the attack, including Fotios “Freddy” Geas, 51, a West Springfield Mafia hit man serving a life sentence for the 2003 slaying of the leader of the Genovese crime family in Springfield, according to several people briefed on the attack. The men were captured on video surveillance entering Bulger’s cell around 6 a.m., according to one of the people.

It was about two hours later that Bulger was found beaten, with his eyes nearly gouged out, the people said.

Bulger was a violent sonofabitch and deserved what he got, delayed as it was

Geas whacking Bulger just made him a fucking rock star in the eyes of his betters in the Mafia; he already has a life sentence, so it’s not going to matter much there, but there’s a lot of wiseguys in and out of stir that are going to treat him like a king.

We use paper ballots in Colorado, they mail them to us three weeks before Election Day. If you want you can go into the County Building and use an electronic voting machine. I did that in 2012, and it spits out a paper receipt of how you voted.

I’ve told this before, but now seems a good time to repeat it.

I’m not Jewish, but the wonderful woman I lived with for sixteen years in NYC was. For a while it seemed that we were beset by people who called themselves Jews for Jesus. They were really Baptists, but fuck them anyway. One Friday night my companion and I were walking along, I think, 8th St. near 6th Ave when we we accosted by one of these people. He had some sort of hick accent (I say this as a Louisiana boy) and eventually I challenged him about his authenticity as a Jew. He went into a whole routine about how he was truly Jewish but believed that Jesus was the Messiah. At a certain point my girlfriend had enough and damn near snarled at him, “If you’re such a frumeh yid, why aren’t you in shul?” (remember, Friday night). It was like checkmate, tool.

forum.rpg.net

RPG Net has a new rule: Do not post in support of Donald Trump or his administration.

They called it support of a hate group. Dayum.

The following policy announcement is the result of over a year of serious debate by the moderation team. The decision is as close to unanimous as we ever get. It will not be the subject of further debate. We have fully considered the downsides and ultimately decided we have to stay true to our values. We will not pretend that evil isn’t evil, or that it becomes a legitimate difference of political opinion if you put a suit and tie on it.

We are banning support of Donald Trump or his administration on the RPGnet forums. This is because his public comments, policies, and the makeup of his administration are so wholly incompatible with our values that formal political neutrality is not tenable. We can be welcoming to (for example) persons of every ethnicity who want to talk about games, or we can allow support for open white supremacy. Not both. Below will be an outline of the policy and a very incomplete set of citations.

We have a community here that we’ve built carefully over time, and support for elected hate groups aren’t welcome here. We can’t save the world, but we can protect and care for the small patch that is this board.

(more details on the rules, plus comment thread)

That’s how you do it Twitter.

Hoo boy did I have fun today! My Trumphumping neighbor stopped by our place because we are having a very large diseased tree removed from behind our house and he wanted to see what was going on. After talking ‘tree’ for a bit the conversation dropped for a few as we stood there watching the guy feeding the chipper. After a few I decided that since he wasn’t leaving my property then it was time to talk turkey. I won’t go in to too much as a lot was talked about over some 20 minutes, but here are a few highlights from memory:

Nationalist - He stated that he, like the Orange Asshole in the White House, is a nationalist. I looked at him, did a Spock eyebrow-lift and asked “White nationalist?”, to which he responded “NO! I’m against globalists and I love my country! I’m a nationalist, not a white nationalist!”. I told the poor guy that not only can you not separate the white from nationalist, but that globalist is code for ‘wealthy Jews taking over the world!!!’. He denied that globalist was code for anything and that to him it means a person who wants the world to do better at the expense of the good ol’ US of A. I told him that he can define it mean whatever he wants but that isn’t going to change the fact that it’s a anti-Semitic slur. He then tried to get me to say that I was a nationalist;

Him: Do you want to see your country do better than other countries?
Me: Yes, of course.
Him: Then what do you call that?
Me: I’m pro America.
Him: No, give me a one word description for it!
Me: There isn’t one word encapsulates how I feel about my country, I’m pro America and that’s it.
Him (shaking his head and laughing): No, there’s a word for it and it’s nationalist!
Me (looking at him deadpan, first point at myself and then him): The word “nationalist” means something completely different to people like me than it does to you. It has a history that can not be denied and even the asshole in the White House acknowledged that history immediately before calling himself a nationalist. He knows exactly what he is saying and it’s not a dog whistle, it’s an air raid siren.

He started walking off at that point so I walked along with him (still on our property) and told him that if he wants to call himself a nationalist he needs to know that people like myself are going to assume that he’s a white nationalist and that he better be ready to explain every single time that he’s not one of “those” kind of nationalists. I also added “Good luck with that.”…lol

We also talked about the shooting and after going over the killers stated reasons for attacking the synagogue, I told him that IMO Trump, Fox News and the Republican party have the victims blood on their hands for having created and fed the environment where this guy (and the bomber) felt the need to step up and do something about the ‘horrible things!’ that they are being told that those in power were powerless to stop. I was surprised when he did not react strongly to this, his only excuse was “there are crazy people everywhere”. I told him “That’s no excuse at all when Trump and the Republicans were the ones whipping up the crazy. You can’t keep going around saying this kind of bullshit and then play stupid when someone decides to act on it.”

There was much more that we talked about (wages, rich/businesses getting away without paying taxes, and more, all properly countered with facts) and I even told him to look up nationalism, globalism and since he was at that moment doing it, whataboutism. He asked about the last one and I told him it’s akin to this:

/me as a kid

Mom: Did you do this stupid thing?
Me, knowing a lie will get me in more trouble): Yes.
Mom: Bend over, time for a spanking.
Me: That’s not fair, my older brother did it first!

I told him that at this point in politics, my Mom walks away unable to do anything because I neutralized her with my brilliant argument defending my actions. Then I looked at my neighbor, smiled and said “Actually, no. My Mom, like most people, can walk and chew bubblegum at the same time. The end result would be that both my brother and I got our asses beat.”

I told him that one party using the alleged actions of another to excuse their own actions is saying that two wrongs make a right. I then told him to look up the history of whataboutism and how it has been historically used in propaganda. He seemed interested so I will ask him some time in the future if he actually ever looked it up. ;) One thing I was really glad to say to him was that I hoped that the Republicans get their asses handed to them next month because they need to be stopped. He chuckled, seemingly confident that it will not be happening.

I hope he is proven wrong next Tuesday.

You can use the word patriot. Orwell wrote a fairly detailed essay on nationalism versus patriotism (“Notes on Nationalism”):

“By ‘patriotism’ I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power. The abiding purpose of every nationalist is to secure more power and more prestige, not for himself but for the nation or other unit in which he has chosen to sink his own individuality.”

The “one word description” that would have probably best served you in this argument is “Patriot.” Followed by an explanation that the conceptual difference between American “patriotism” and “nationalism” is identical to that between “a philosophy that elevates the ideals underpinning the American Constitution” and the absolutist, simple-minded phrase “my country right or wrong.”

freetoken  Oct 31, 2018 • 2:18:29am

Many words in English are quite overloaded in meanings.

To me, I find the very question of “Do you want to see your country do better than other countries?” to be troubling.

At its heart, such a question is about the type of survivalism that has been so well portrayed in all the reality-TV competitions of the past couple of decades.

This gets to why Trumpers love Trump so much: because Trump on his TV show played the ruthless judge to determine who would do better than the other contestants.

The idea that one has to do better than another means that if the other does better then you are worse off.

This is the essence of the zero-sum mindset the infects the nationalists.

I’ve lived outside the US, I’ve traveled to a few different countries beyond that. There’s not a place I’ve been that I don’t want the people there to “do better” than they already are.

While in the big scheme of the planet we are all caught in the great throws of entropy and eventually we’re all going to pass away and everything we’ve made will turn to dust (though the bits and bobs we’ve left on the Moon and sent into deep space will probably last billions of years), for now, in the lifetimes of those who not only are alive now but in the near future, we all benefit from all of humanity doing “better”.

re: #184 ericblair

re: #187 goddamnedfrank

It really never occurred to me to use that word as I never have thought of myself as a patriot, just an American who loves his country.

re: #189 freetoken

That question bothered me too and the answer I gave him was cut short to keep it simple for the simpleton. A more complete answer would be of course I want our country to do better than others but that’s because too many others are horrible places to live (political, governmental, environmental, etc). As bad as it is in those places, there are other nations who in many ways are doing better than we are and there’s no excuse for it.

Ideally, I would want all nations to do better but that answer would have (further) short-circuited his brain, which would have lead to him call me a globalist. Then I would have had to point out to him that I’m not Jewish and it would never end… :)

While that’s an excellent essay, I have two competing ideas of the word Patriot:

One more thing I mentioned to my Trumphumping neighbor was that the MAGA crap pisses me off. I knew this would make him happy and sure enough he smiled and asked me why. I quickly wiped that smile off of his face and it was one of the things that we talked about that he had no rebuttal for.

I told him that the Make America Great Again slogan is bullshit because our country has never stopped being great and it’s bullshit that any American who loves their country would even say something like that. Ever since WWII we have been THE country that much of the world has admired, THE economic powerhouse, THE military powerhouse… you name it, we have dominated it. Not only that, but we have spread that greatness in many ways in assisting other nations and their citizens. Then here comes this orange asshole and his party telling us that we’re not great any more and that only they can make us great again. MAGA is a bullshit slogan because to embrace it you have to believe that America isn’t the greatest nation in the world, which is a lie.

Seeing the smile disappear from his face was a true pleasure and the fact that he had no comeback to it just shows that MAGA really is bullshit.

It never has to be a win/lose situation - the only one that trump wants. Any decent management training talks about win/win - and the same happens with countries. If one does better - they can pull others up with them. The US doesn’t have to be better than everyone else - it simply has to be a fine place to live for everyone, not for just a few wealthy whites.

Bingo. That’s exactly what I’m going to my neighbor about regarding trade the next time I get to talk to him. Taking the Trumpian view that trade must be a win/lose proposition for us and another nation, who would want to trade with us?

One other thing I may have to hit him with next time is that if he is going to run with Trump and declare himself a nationalist, I am wondering how he will differentiate his nationalism from that of, lets say, black nationalists?

I’ll have to remember that one. :)

DEA of St. Louis warns of drug-laced Halloween treats

The Drug Enforcement Administration of St. Louis sent a warning to local law enforcement and first responders Tuesday cautioning the dangers of drug-laced treats this Halloween.

The DEA St. Louis Division has not identified a specific threat, but warns that the Midwest has seen a rise in the commercial production and illegal distribution on various types of drug-laced candies.

Last Halloween, the DEA discovered marijuana-laced candies sold in packages designed to look like traditional candies; including Munchy Way, 3 Rastateers, Twixed, Keef Kat and Rasta Reese’s.

Right, somebody is going to hand out $25 cannabis candy bars for Halloween. Only the DEA would think anybody would believe that.

(CNN)A hole was gouged in the deck of Russia’s only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, Tuesday when a crane fell on it while the vessel was undergoing repairs in the northern city of Murmansk, according to Russian state media.

The accident took place after a power supply disruption caused the pumps on the floating dry dock, which was holding the aircraft carrier, to break down, causing the structure to sink.
The dock, known as PD-50, is one of the world’s largest floating dry docks and the biggest in Russia, measuring 330 meters long (1,082 feet) and weighing more than 80,000 tons.
Following the disruption, PD-50 quickly became submerged, causing two cranes to fall onto the deck of the Russian vessel, leaving a hole measuring four meters by five meters (13 feet by 16.4 feet), state media Sputnik said.

Looks like today is getting off to a pretty good start too.

Kids and I are invited to a Hallowe’en party. One advantage of life in this part of Germany is that November 1st is a holiday, so we can party until we are purple and sleep in tomorrow.

And although Hallowe’en is mostly an artificial holiday here introduced by the US soldiers and Irish Pubs, there are a few isolated regions like the Hunsrück, which were not coincidentally areas inhabited by the ancient Celts, where it never died out and survived as Klumpennacht, where the kids dress up, carve turnip lanterns and go trick-or-treating.

Halloween is something new here in Czech Republic…..it’s been slowly creeping in over the last 17 years that I’ve been here. When I first arrived, you could only find Halloween-related merchandise at Tesco (UK-based supermarket). Now, its pretty much everywhere.

One major difference is that I have yet to see any kids doing the whole trick-or-treating thing; for the most part, Halloween here is a holiday for adults, an excuse to cosplay and get drunk at Halloween parties.

Politico thinks they’ve got the goods - he’s been planning to subpoena Trump, and there’s been an ongoing legal battle in the DC federal courts.

As to why Trump’s legal team has gone dark in recent weeks could be that even they know how seriously the courts take matters where the sides are required to be silent as the case is sealed.

Trip up and spill any details about a case that is sealed, and you can find yourself hauled before the court and harshly sanctioned. Even Rudy knows that.

I wonder if any Mexican soldiers who were actually there when the “caravan” arrived have read this mierda?

To me, I find the very question of “Do you want to see your country do better than other countries?” to be troubling.

Morning.

I cringed when I saw that question too. Sure I like to see the good ol’ USA strong, but also as a leader for the entire world. I want to see the entire world do better because of our example…not by our military power and force.

The whole world humming along doing well should always be the goal. It helps everyone, prevents wars, helps the planet, helps trade and travel, etc.

So, what’s Mueller been up to lately?

Politico thinks they’ve got the goods - he’s been planning to subpoena Trump, and there’s been an ongoing legal battle in the DC federal courts.

[Embedded content]

As to why Trump’s legal team has gone dark in recent weeks could be that even they know how seriously the courts take matters where the sides are required to be silent as the case is sealed.

Trip up and spill any details about a case that is sealed, and you can find yourself hauled before the court and harshly sanctioned. Even Rudy knows that.

People who know law stuff seem to think it might be legit.

There’s a lot GKC designed churches (Which were actually usually designed by Isi Metzstein and Andy MacMillan) in central Scotland, particularly around Glasgow and the new towns. The interesting thing about them is that although they look brutalist on the outside, the insides are nearly always gorgeous, with great use of light and space.

So you end up with something like St Bride’s in East Kilbride, which looks like a power station from the outside, but inside looks like this.

There’s an indescribable number of awful looking churches, especially from the exteriors.

There’s brutalist designs, and then there’s the ones that look like someone repurposed a shopping mall or a parking structure or a garage. I think some of those are worse than the brutalist designs.

Some of these were incredibly expensive to build, so it’s not that money was an issue in getting to a good design. It’s that someone thought that these would inspire people in some fashion.

Pretty good piece from Politico on how the alt-right has scattered - Trump’s Culture Warriors Go Home

The constant infighting has worn thin on many in this loose-knit network, some of whom would not discuss their gripes on the record. Cernovich has no such qualms. “I just found myself around people who half of them I just really don’t like at all,” he says. “You’re working with people who are really just bad people, man. They’re gossipmongers.”

Even the Trumpists’ publicity stunts are starting to fizzle, as the enthusiasm of their followers wanes and the shock value fades with repetition. The Unite the Right 2 rally, held in Washington in August as a sequel to Charlottesville, was a shadow of the previous summer’s fiasco. Fewer than 40 demonstrators showed up, and they were shouted down by thousands of anti-racist counterdemonstrators.

In September, the right-wing activist Laura Loomer interrupted a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing at which Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was testifying to protest the platform’s decision to suspend the accounts of various Trump supporters. A year earlier, when she and fellow pro-Trump provocateur Jack Posobiec had interrupted a Central Park staging of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” in which Caesar was modeled on Trump, the public disruption had made national news. This time, coverage of the Capitol Hill stunt focused more on the deadpan response from Missouri Republican Rep. Billy Long, who drowned out Loomer’s screams with a stream of auctioneer babble.

True. It’s no accident that the radicalization of the NRA coincided with the Civil Rights movement. The process wasn’t complete until the “coup of 1977” but the struggle between the nuts and the old guard had been going tooth and nail for 15 years before that. Younger people would not believe what the NRA was like before the 60s.

$279 in 1962 is over $2,000 in today’s money. White trash rednecks couldn’t afford and embrace the AR back then as they can today. Now that that ARs are readily accessible to their white trash base, the NRA loves the rifle.
