A Haunting Solo Performance: Bruce Hornsby, “Shit’s Crazy Out Here”

Music • Views: 23,142

Bruce Hornsby wrote a classic pop song with “The Way It Is” in 1986. But his new album is full of sounds drawing from contemporary classical music and the film scores he’s done with Spike Lee. He joins us to play a couple of songs and talk about a surprising range of music.

If a 17-year-old can cross state lines with an AR-15, go into a protest, shoot three people killing two, walk with his hands up towards the cops and the cops ignore him, and then get back into his car and drive back to Illinois and half of the country makes him out out be some kind of a hero, the country is fucking finished.

Remember the advertisers who “fled” Laura Ingraham over her Nazi apologia slowly slipped back in after the furore died down.

Unless pressure is kept up on advertisers, all they see is sales opportunities. They do not care about fascism, they can make money under that system as well.

BTW, in case anyone was wondering what has been going on with USS Bonhomme Richard, since the fire last month that burned for four days and left it a gutted hulk in “uncertain” condition: the Navy has announced they are finally getting around to investigating the blaze, and (somewhat unsurprisingly) announced they are investigating a sailor for arson in connection with the fire.

No names have been released yet, but there is suspicion that one Seaman Judas Scapegoat of Coventry, RI may have been involved…

In the last thread where breaking up a Gish Gallop seems tough, it’s because Gish Gallops aren’t meant to have a back-and-forth conversation. They are meant to preach (whether it’s actual preaching, or promoting some sort of political position).

Thus when you interrupt a Gish Gallop, the person (particularly a religious person) will become highly offended.

Videos of people like Duane Gish or Ben Shapiro or just about any Christian caller on The Atheist Experience shows them becoming extremely agitated when they are forced to slow down and explain points.

Where a Gish Gallop is used in a debate, the goal is to group all the assertions. Many times Gish Gallops simply restate the same point in different ways, so in the rebuttal numerous points can be dispatched at the same time.

Got an ad for Jorgensen. Wanted me to take quiz. Here are two of the questions

What is the most important issue facing our nation in 2020?
Auditing the Federal Reserve
Ending the federal war on drugs
Getting rid of the personal income tax
Balancing the ballooning national debt
Bringing our troops home from foreign wars
Fixing our broken healthcare system with free market solutions

Do you believe the allegations of sexual assault both Donald Trump & Joe Biden are facing?
Yes
No
Only Joe Biden
Only Donald Trump
Unsure

Not giving my name/email. Wanted to say drop out of the race, but I think she’s stealing more votes from trump than Joe.

And to the surprise of perhaps no one on this website, Kyle Rittenhouse, the alleged Kenosha gunman, is quite a fan of Trump. Hell, maybe Trump will pardon him on his way out next January (and let’s keep our fingers crossed that Trump will indeed be on his way out come January 2021).

The law enforcement-obsessed 17-year-old who was charged with shooting and killing two people and injuring another in Kenosha, Wisconsin, during protests for Jacob Blake appeared in the front row at a Donald Trump rally in January.

Kyle Howard Rittenhouse’s social media presence is filled with him posing with weapons, posting “Blue Lives Matter,” and supporting Trump for president. Footage from the Des Moines, Iowa, rally on Jan. 30 shows Rittenhouse feet away from the president, in the front row, to the left of the podium. He posted a TikTok video from the event.

Seven months later, Rittenhouse went with his rifle to the third night of Black Lives Matter protests in Kenosha after police shot Blake, a Black man who is now paralyzed as a result, according to his family. Rittenhouse attended as an armed vigilante, supposedly assisting police and protecting property in an unofficial capacity. Instead, he allegedly prowled the protest with a gun. Videos captured him fraternizing with law enforcement and attempting to get their attention.

By the end of the evening, he was considered a fugitive on the run. He was arrested Wednesday morning in Antioch, Illinois, and is expected to be extradited to Wisconsin to face charges of first-degree intentional homicide. Rittenhouse’s mother did not respond to a request for comment. The Lake County Public Defender’s Office, who represented him in court today, told BuzzFeed News it does not comment on active cases.

The wingnut narrative forming in defense of Rittenhouse is totally unsurprising: They’re claiming he was the victim in this whole incident and that he was acting in self-defense.

According to the narrative, Rosenbaum threw a “molotov” at Rittenhouse as he was fleeing, which was all the justification necessary to fire in self-defense.

Then Rittenhouse fled from the “mob,” trying to surrender himself to the cops. That’s when he was jumped, with Kyle shooting Huber (again in self-defense) after he was hit in the head by a skateboard. And Grosskruetz was shot in the arm (say it with me: “in self-defense”) after he pulled a gun with intent to shoot Kyle.

But I hear you asking “Why didn’t Kyle turn himself into the cops then and there?” Well, it does look like he did have his hands up when the cops showed up…but he was a white boy who looked non-threatening despite having a rifle slung, so they just drove by him. And instead of being so distraught over his actions that he went to the KPD to surrender, he drove all the way back home in Illinois and is now awaiting extradition.

re: #57 Jack Burton

I’m seeing a lot of posts about this on Facebook linking it to BLM. Am I wrong in thinking “umm, no this is about the damn virus you all got bored with.”

In this case, it seems to be BLM-related. From the SI story:

The first domino fell Wednesday afternoon when players from the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the court for Game 5 against the Orlando Magic in protest against the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis. When both teams agreed to not play the game, the NBA postponed the other two games scheduled for Wednesday.

“We fully support our players and the decision they made,” the Bucks said in a statement signed by Marc Lasry, Wes Edens and Jamie Dinan. “Although we did not know beforehand, we would have wholeheartedly agreed with them. The only way to bring about change is to shine a light on the racial injustices that are happening in front of us. Our players have done that and we will continue to stand alongside them and demand accountability and change.”

For the immediate future, Thursday’s scheduled games will likely not be played, according to Mannix. The fate of the remainder of the playoffs is still up in the air as players continue to discuss options going forward.

I recall (either before or shortly after the 2016 election) when the media was doing their Cletus safaris, a lot of the white interviewees stated they felt that they “no longer recognized America” or that “America was slipping away from them” or things to that effect.

And we all know what that meant. The fact that a Black man with a vaguely Arabic-sounding name had been elected to the position of supreme authority in the United States - not once, but twice - had driven them straight out of their goddamn minds.

Yeah, you ain’t kidding.

As per Wisconsin statute 939.48(2)(a):

“A person who engages in unlawful conduct of a type likely to provoke others to attack him or her and thereby does provoke an attack is not entitled to claim the privilege of self-defense against such attack, except when the attack which ensues is of a type causing the person engaging in the unlawful conduct to reasonably believe that he or she is in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm. In such a case, the person engaging in the unlawful conduct is privileged to act in self-defense, but the person is not privileged to resort to the use of force intended or likely to cause death to the person’s assailant unless the person reasonably believes he or she has exhausted every other reasonable means to escape from or otherwise avoid death or great bodily harm at the hands of his or her assailant.”

Piotrowski claimed that where he was they never got any calm, which is strange because the map indicates they were in part of the eye.

It appears as if downtown Lake Charles was on the very eastern fringe of the eye at that time.

I was sad to find out that Pedro Wong’s Mexican and Chinese drive-in restaurant in Payson, Arizona was no longer in business…

Yeah, for me, it’s always kind of sad when I see a local institution close its doors for good. Canton Grill had been serving Portlanders since 1944. On the other hand, I know that nothing lasts forever and frankly, 76 years is one helluva great run.

Canton Grill was one of those old-school Chinese restaurants that seem to be slowly disappearing in the Portland area.

I may have seen it here a few months ago, but there was reporting that Chinese restaurants are disappearing everywhere because after the first couple of generations of ownership (which was usually an expediency because other jobs weren’t readily available in China or here) the families have achieved their purpose—to make sure their children or grandchildren could pursue other professions.

That’s an interesting point, actually. Now that the second and third generation is firmly established on the socio-economic ladder, there’s no need to continue operating the establishing enterprise.

Another interesting thing I learned from a PBS program on the history of Chinese restaurants in America is that, broadly speaking, most of the first were from Fujian province (or Canton) dating back to the 1800s. The next wave was Sichuan via Taiwan: these were mostly Nationalist or people who had to flee with Nationalists to Taiwan during and after the civil war from the area where the Guomindang had set up their capital in Sichuan. Finally, when Chinese food attained more than just buffet status among Americans, a variety of other styles and gourmet fusions appeared.

In 1956 Pittsburgh, the restaurant near us (the first I’d seen) made a point of calling itself “The Free China Restaurant”. It was pretty much chop suey all the way.

I’ve a strong suspicion that all this is gonna end up coming down to what happened to prompt Rosenbaum to toss what looks like a plastic bag at Rittenhouse. Personally, I think what we have here is a kid who got way too fuckin’ big for his britches, said some stupid shit, and then shot someone without any real grasp of how bad an idea that was.

My grandmother loved Chinese food, but in truth the restaurants we went to were similar. Or else it was basically wonton soup and “sweet and sour” everything. Later, when my Chinese language professor (had to take it as part of my degree) took the grad students out, I finally learned that there is so very much more even in those restaurants, and that most of it is not on menus for the average ignorant white guy like me.

You know, I was just thinking, maybe Trump should try just straight-up telling the truth. He can address the American people, maybe a live presser even, and say, “Folks, believe me, look, I’ve committed so many crimes, I’m stealing taxpayer dollars every hour of every day, not just me, my kids too, even Jared. But here’s the thing, it’s so many crimes that if I’m not re-elected, we’re all gonna go to jail. I’m an old guy….hell, I can’t take prison, I’d be dead in a month. So sure, OK, Joe’s a nice guy, ain’t gonna lie, but I’m sayin’ c’mon folks, keep me and my kids out of Sing Sing.”

Maybe as a last-ditch tactic or something.

Yes, particularly when combined with the fact that he wasn’t local and had no stake in being there. He was there to intimidate and harass. He was close enough that he could get there to get his hate boner on, and shot two people. I don’t care what the first victim did (or what his arrest history was). Rittenhouse created the situation. I really, really don’t care what the second victim did…he was trying to stop a known shooter. Bottom line…it is all on Rittenhouse, his parents, and Kenosha PD.

A few days after Andrew hit Miami-Homestead, we built what became a DoD Joint Task Force. The most organized add-on was a detachment from the US Forest Service—totally had their shit together. They were there in an urban-suburban environment because more than 100,000 trees were down, and they were screwing up the recovery logistics.

President Trump is shifting his focus from the U.S. Postal Service in his concerns about potential fraud in mail-in voting, claiming problems with mailed ballots lie with local elections officials who are “going to count them wrong,” NBC News reports.

Said Trump: “It’s not the post office … it has nothing to do with the post office.”

The End Times were here, the Romans had conquered the assorted Jewish warbands and bickering tribes in a slow walk and they owned the Jewish homeland which was evidence of the Tribulation. Like any troublemakers who wouldn’t sit down and shut up he eventually came to the attention of the cops and got nailed to a tree for his troubles. Oof.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) decreased at an annual rate of 31.7 percent in the second quarter of 2020 (table 1), according to the “second” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP decreased 5.0 percent.

The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for the “advance” estimate issued last month. In the advance estimate, the decrease in real GDP was 32.9 percent. With the second estimate, private inventory investment and personal consumption expenditures (PCE) decreased less than previously estimated (see “Updates to GDP” on page 2).

bea.gov

Also,

Another 1 million American workers filed for first-time unemployment benefits last week on a seasonally adjusted basis, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

The report met economists’ expectations, and was a small decline from the prior week, but the report was still somewhat of a disappointment. So far, we’ve only seen one week — at the start of August — with fewer than a million claims since March, when the pandemic started to take its toll on America’s job market.

Continued jobless claims, which count people filing at least two weeks in a row, stood at 14.5 million on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The House Oversight committe is pushing the DoD to inviestigate if the other Colonel Vindeman is being retaliated against for reporting concerns. His evaluation before Trump made the Ukraine call:

Yevgeny is the epitome of an Army officer and lawyer. He is a hardworking, disciplined, tough-minded team player who manifests the Army Values. He is unremittingly honest in delivering legal advice, without concern of repercussions. Yev does the right thing and is approachable and personable. … Yev is a top 1% military attorney and officer and the best LTC with whom I have ever worked. Functioning at the executive level, he advises White House senior staff with skill, tact, and judgment on matters of geostrategic importance. Sought by White House staff regularly, he can do any job in the legal field under unusual and constant pressure and scrutiny. Select now for Senior Service College and promote immediately to Colonel. Absolutely unlimited potential!

And his evaulation eight months later:

During the prior reporting period and early portions of the reporting period, LTC Vindman performed his duties satisfactorily. Over time, LTC Vindman displayed increasingly poor judgment and failed to learn from his mistakes. On multiple occasions, his unprofessional demeanor made NSC staff feel uncomfortable. Despite express guidance from his supervisor, he continued to add himself to meetings with senior NSC staff where he did not add value. LTC Vindman’s substandard performance—his lack of judgment, failure to communicate well with his superiors, and inability to differentiate between legal and policy decisions—caused him to lose the trust of NSC senior leadership. … With additional counseling and experience, LTC Vindman’s performance may improve. He would benefit from additional experience in a slower paced work environment subject to less pressure and scrutiny. In time, he may become a better attorney

Yesterday, I mentioned my hero, Bill Russell’s, reaction to the “doings” in sports. Here’s an article in today WaPo about his actions back in 1961:

Nearly 60 years earlier, Russell was the one pulling himself out of an NBA game as a demonstration against racist behavior. His Black teammates on the Boston Celtics followed suit, as did Black players for their opponent, the St. Louis Hawks.

it’s likely that NBA players today would have no trouble finding common ground with a sentiment Russell expressed at the time: “I am coming to the realization that we are accepted as entertainers, but that we are not accepted as people in some places.”

I remember reading a Bob Gibson quote that broke my heart. He said if he couldn’t pitch a baseball, he’d be just another n-word to most white people. Makes me sad. But I sadly do believe that still has truth. The way black athletes are treated when they speak out is appalling.

As for glorifying Kyle Rittenhouse, it’s already well under way over at Dreher’s blog at the American Conservative. I snapped back at him in his latest post, for saying “nobody is afraid of Kyle Rittenhouses burning down their neighborhoods.” I told him a lot more afraid of Kyles killing one of my black kids than I am of protestors burning down my apartment complex. But it’s the comments in an older post of his about Kenosha where the fascists are really strutting. Here’s a few wretched samples:

People guarding businesses with rifles are well within the law. Rittenhouse had his hands up when he walked past the cops, so he was clearly no threat to them. There is no comparison with the rioters. …
I will go back to and stand by my original statement that the rioters in Minneapolis who burned down the police station should have been shot as they tried it (though not the people protesting or even looting, as odious as the latter is). Not doing so has set the tone for all this and made the tolerable seem intolerable. A violent attack on a public institution is not a protest or even civil unrest. It is insurrection and violence against the general public and public welfare. Not stopping it with force has let the cat out of the bag and it’s going to be a big, big tiger before this is all over. …
After watching a documentary about the LA Riots of the 90’s you said, “I stand withe the rooftop Koreans, do you?”. I affirmed that I did and do and the rooftop Koreans of our time are atop the buildings of Kenosha, Wisconsin 2020. They are armed and ready to defend their themselves, their families, their businesses, their neighborhood and their town from the rioters and looters, the gangbangers and the White Communists. I stand with the rooftop Americans in Kenosha, do you? …
The Left wing violence has been going on for weeks, and, finally, it can be justified because a violent right-winger showed up for the party. Of course this happened - No shit. If your beloved rioters keep this up, there will obviously be more of the same. Probably a lot more. Again, No shit. But this means that “fascism” is real, right? And so your beloved rioters are righteous, no? Valiant Defenders! …
A 17 year-old kid managed to slot 2 anarchists and hideously maim another. There is plenty of evidence showing he acted in self defense and the prosecutors already overcharged him so he will most likely walk. Antifa isn’t so scary when they can’t mob a person 5 to 1, throw a brick or take a cheap shot. Kenosha antifa couldn’t subdue and disarm a 17 year-old kid who was separated, on the ground and alone, with one of the attackers carrying a Glock and pretending to surrender before pulling it out—typical filthy, dishonorable antifa tactic. False surrender is a war crime under the Geneva convention. …
The arrested the poor boy and charged him with murder even though the videos quite clearly show he was legally and morally in the right. Decent people must find a way to defend him.

And now it seems like any progress is being made, shit is just devolving even worse because the monsters see no reason for restraint or keeping the mask up: murder is good, murder is great, long as its the untermenschen fake Americans being killed, not the glorious godly super-human Real Americans that love Trump more than everything else and hate blacks and the “other” like all Real Americans should. The US does a shitload more voting more often than most countries and their “ballots” can run to several pages elections of judges and dogcatchers, bond issues, changes to local laws etc. Counting them all by hand would be a Sisyphean task.

Kipling wrote a satirical piece about this peculiarly American obsession with direct democracy in one of his few science-fictional stories, “As Easy As ABC”, about Democrats in a future rural-libertarian Illinois causing trouble by insisting on voting on everything, like what they were going to have for dinner.

I talked yesterday about how the white power structure is entrenched in this country and will not go away easily. I mean just look at the last few days:

1. White kid kills two people and is initially allowed to WALK AWAY after TRYING TO SURRENDER and is only arrested later after returning home. Said white kid then becomes a hero and “national treasure” according to a number of prominent white people (i.e. Tucker Carlson).

2. ANOTHER black man is brutally killed by a white police officer (who most likely won’t see discipline for it because - again - white power structure).

3. Police in Kenosha give high fives and water bottles to heavily armed white dudes in their streets while harassing and arresting black protesters.

4. White people start complaining about black people having the nerve to stop playing the sports they love to watch (and exploit for gain) because of item #2 and because they think the players should just “Shut up and dribble”.

5. The Covington kid and the St. Louis gun couple who trained an ASSAULT WEAPON on peaceful protesters get primo speaking spots at the RNC.

6. The largely white owned media continues to amplify white viewpoints and/or take bothsider-ism to the extreme on issues where one side is CLEARLY much more in the right than the other. And let’s also mention how mostly white run social media CONTINUES to allow neo-nazi, white supremacist and far right movements to prosper on their services.

I was going to stop here, but you know what? Let’s keep going.

7. Black and minority voters are disenfranchised in MUCH higher numbers than white voters…and it’s getting worse.

8. The mixed race family who got a home valuation over $100 000 HIGHER when they removed all the “Black stuff” including A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY, from the home during the appraisal.

9. The recent report about black newborns who have worse outcomes when treated by white doctors.

10. The Pandemic. White people are statistically MUCH more likely to survive if infected and are usually NOT the demographic most at risk of infection. Blacks and Latinos? Sorry, brown folks. You get what you get. Best of luck to you. Let’s also mention a not insignificant percentage of white people who accept all the minority deaths from the Pandemic as “acceptable losses”.

11. Oh and most of the cops responsible for Breona Taylors death have STILL seen no consequences.

Why? It’s obvious. There are two Americas: One for white people and one for everyone else and I say this as a white person who realizes my skin color allows me to get a free pass on things when others wouldn’t.

And that’s really fucking appalling.

(Sorry for ranty post. I’m just in a pissed off mood this morning)

It’s a NT verse that many skip over. Mostly, the NT “Jesus” is not the nice guy that is often portrayed.

This. I just had a chat with a Black coworker who moved here last year from Alabama. He said:

“Honestly, yesterday I was very hurt. I just pushed through. I almost called off work. I have gone from angry, to furious, to confused, to now just painfully hurt. All I can feel is hurt ‘cause I don’t even understand how after so very long how this type of hatred can exist in America.”

We chatted some more after that. I gotta say this one conversation was more clarifying than all the stuff corporate has sent out this summer. I told my coworker that I was there if he ever needed to vent to a white woman.

re: #102 Targetpractice

I’ve a strong suspicion that all this is gonna end up coming down to what happened to prompt Rosenbaum to toss what looks like a plastic bag at Rittenhouse. Personally, I think what we have here is a kid who got way too fuckin’ big for his britches, said some stupid shit, and then shot someone without any real grasp of how bad an idea that was.

For decades teenagers barely older than Rittenhouse were drafted to fight, kill, and die in our wars. Our movies glorified our soldiers and our missions while promoting the message that the enemy is evil and must be destroyed. That is what Trump has been doing since he took the escalator to announce his run for office — working to brainwash the nation that only he should be followed and anyone who opposes him is a criminal. Teenagers, who have less experience in dealing with the real world, are very susceptible — especially when there is a whole RW media and Internet sites promoting these messages of white supremacy and killing opponents. Of course, QAnon has shown that adults are equally manipulatable.

He is no different than Yigal Amir, Rabin’s assassin, who had been persuaded by Israel’s RW, that Rabin was the enemy and must be destroyed.

True story: years ago when my brother lived in Florida, he had a neighbor who was a police officer involved in undercover investigations. My brother offered to help him out, because like so many gun owners, he wanted to demonstrate his prowess with his weapons in real life situations and was eager to actually kill some “bad” guys.

Kellyanne was on FOX this morning. I thought she resigned her post at the WH to deal with some very public family issues. More like she used her daughter’s public outcry to start to disentangle herself from Trumpco. Withdrawal is tough, and she needed a Fox fix.

She announced she was leaving ‘at the end of the month.’ So she’s just using up those couple of bags of lies she’s got laying around the office. It’ll make packing up easier.

Yeah me neither.

Yet some people are pissing themselves about some property damage.

Let’s not minimize the destruction that looting can inflict on a neighborhood. If your store is burned down or destroyed, you may lose your livelihood and not be able to recover. And if too many shop owners flee a community, the community may not recover either. Chaos and anarchy are destructive too. Even if there are no deaths, violence scars people — and burning cars and breaking windows and invading stores are forms of violence that promote terror and fear and can cause otherwise caring individuals to retreat into a mindset that supports jack-booted agents of an authoritarian regime.

The purpose for a demonstration is to seize and consolidate the moral high ground in the public mind. Two assholes, a ratfucker, and a drunk can wreck that in a blink.

Yeah I was speaking more relative to some people in my orbit who seemed more concerned about “riots” and property damage than in the underlying conditions that feed all of it.

It’s a legit question as to how he got home. I mean, fair enough, he might well have had a DL at 17 (I did) and he might’ve just borrowed his mom’s car and hightailed it outta there.

But if someone picked him up after the murders and took him back home, yeah, that person (whether it’s his mom or another individual) could be in big trouble.

Also, there’s video of him on his cellphone saying, “I just killed someone.” Who was he talking to? Who was the recipient of that phone call?

A hypothetical (and it’s purely hypothetical): he called his mom - probably not knowing what else to do - and she comes and picks him up and takes him home. Now she’s aiding and abetting, she’s an accomplice to two murders, she’s now involved in illegal flight to avoid arrest and prosecution (across a state line, no less)……IANAL by a damn sight, but as a layman, I’d venture to say she’s now in some pretty deep shit.
