Unprovoked, illegal, invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Maybe “Russia crisis”, but certainly not “Ukraine crisis”.

I was hoping Anonymous would join the party.

The Taiwan News and other sites are reporting that Anonymous hacked a Chinese site (chineseculture.com.cn) and inserted a page detailing its compromise of a Russian device as a “warning shot.”

The hacktivist stated, “Anonymous will formally attack Russian websites or devices later” in retaliation for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Assuming Ukraine has been testing the javelins on accurate depictions of caged Russian tanks, this could be good news for the effectiveness of those missiles.

Single runway without a full length parallel taxiway and limited road access; should be easy to block/disable that airport. The international apt. on the opposite side of Kyiv has more ramp space and better access—it’s also slightly closer to the city center. That makes it more likely the place for an assault to establish a bridgehead near the city.

Speaking purely as an armchair pacifist, I do hope the Javelins have a 90% or better success rate. But I fear that if they inflict too much damage Putin will go straight to war crimes and begin carpet bombing.

Javelins fire a missile that arcs upward and then attack the target from above almost straight down. Tanks by nature are generally weak to this.

What doesn’t seem to be helping their case is that every time the prosecution presents new evidence, it just furthers the picture of a pair of shitheels that were more focused on their own problems than their kid:

“Now my mom thinks I take drugs,” reads one text, according to prosecutors. “She thinks that’s the reason why I’m so mad and sad all the time, and she doesn’t worry about my mental health. They make me feel like I’m the problem.”

Another text shows Ethan Crumbley indicating that he had asked his father to take him to the doctor, but he refused.

“He just gave me some pills and told me to suck it up,” the text read, according to prosecutors.

Gee, I can’t imagine how these two could be Trump supporters.///////

Hence the subterfuge and the deliberate strong-arming of the military into becoming “contract soldiers” while also confiscating their phones and other mobile devices, the need to maintain total control over all information coming from the front lines on the Russian side.

This isn’t Chechnya where they can BS the populace that they’re uncivilized savages who must be put down with uncompromising force, these are their brothers/cousins who they wish to bring back into the fold. Which is why they’re emphasizing that their targets are the government and the military, because they want to convince people that the civilians are simply “victims” of Zelensky and others.

That lady and Jennifer Rubin should be a tag team. Jennifer’s questions the media should be asking Republicans:

Is Putin a war criminal? Would you reject a political leader who praised him? Is such a person fit to be commander in chief?

Is Putin a “genius”? Are you comfortable that Russian state networks think remarks from Trump-acolytes are so effective that they air them on TV?

How can you criticize President Biden for being weak when Trump appeased Putin for four years and still roots for him?

Why did you not stand up to Trump during his presidency when he attempted to extort Ukraine and so often sided with Putin? Was that “America First”?

How can you call yourself an advocate of a strong U.S. foreign policy if you’d support Trump for president again?

Don’t you think fawning over Putin gives him the impression that the West is divided? Doesn’t this aid his invasion?

I’ve seen a number of comments about how “some people” have become experts on the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication aka SWIFT. However, I suspect 99 percent of those people don’t have a job where they have to pull up a consolidated screen with transaction flows on it for monitoring purposes, and a few of those flows are for SWIFT. Let me just say that when there are problems with SWIFT, it’s a really bad day at work.

That’s just it, they’re gonna be committed to an open-ended occupation if they choose to depose the existing government in favor of a pack of quislings. Between how Vlad’s handled elections back home and the open efforts in the past 2 decades to influence Ukrainian elections, nobody but the truly naive are gonna accept any votes taken under Russian occupation as legit. Which means months or even years of keeping Russian troops in-country until they can stand up a large enough force of loyal Ukrainian troops willing to replace them.

On a non-war note, I thought you all might enjoy this poem I wrote some months ago for a gender fluid friend of mine:

DEFENDER

A lot of folks don’t understand you.
That’s their problem and not yours.
You might live a little differently
But you’re still human to the core.

They will say abrasive, awful things
They will yell and scream and curse,
But if they’re out to hurt you,
Then they’ll have to beat me first.

If they’re trying to snuff your light out,
Or send panic through your bones.
Then I’m gearing up and rolling out.
You’re not fighting this alone.

Don’t let ‘em chain you down with fear,
Or sow you full of doubt.
Burn your haunted house away,
And drive the ghosts right out.

I assure you, I’m fast and and nimble
And I can really throw a punch.
So let them try and take me down,
I’ll thrash the entire bunch.

I’m fighting for a person.
I’m fighting for a heart.
I’m fighting for a vibrant soul
I won’t let get torn apart.

I won’t give up that battle,
As long as I can breathe,
Because I know that you are worth it
And in truth and justice, I believe.

So in the brightest light of day,
Or the darkest depth of night.
Call me if you ever need me.
I’m always ready for a fight.

re: #70 gocart mozart

It was worse than that. Gregorovich Kelliski said during that unhinged rant:

1. Get rid of term limits
2. Implied just having a dictator so they don’t have to “bother campaigning every couple of years”
3. He apparently think Xi Jingping has been in power for like 20 years… because he’s a fucking moron.*
4. Implied Biden, GW Bush, and Clinton were “clownish amateurs” but Clownstick was a “pro”

I can name off the top of my head the 3 leaders of the PRC before Xi. I bet Gregorvich would have to look it up.

Deng Xiaoping, Jing Zemin and Hu Jintao… btw

Ukraine and the United Nations

Ukraine signed the Charter of the United Nations as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic on 26 June 1945 and came into force on 24 October 1945. Ukraine was among the first countries that signed the United Nations Charter, becoming a founding member of the United Nations among 51 countries. This provided the Soviet Union (a permanent Security Council member with veto powers) with another vote in the General Assembly.

They justified it by allowing them to have some foreign relations outside of USSR foreign policy, and allowing each to have it’s own “army” (in dick quotes). It was of course all a sham in classic Russian bullshittery.

Taibbi certainly knew better than most. He made his career out of chastising the American financial services industry, but he chose not to focus on people equally if not more heinous in Russia. We’ve all speculated why, but his apology seems to be evidence that it was personal issues rather Russia having something on him.

About three weeks ago we had an ice storm event (with snow). By the time we got up at 5am, there were already multiple reports of cars sliding off roads locally. My wife asked to cancel her morning client, a bed-ridden French-Canadian woman. The company called the family and they said it was ok, she could re-do on Saturday. Then later that day the company sent out an email emphatically thanking the caregivers who had taken risks to get to their clients.

That day was the first day my wife ever was so afraid to drive that she declined. She has driven on bad two-lane roads in blizzards, but she didn’t want to do ice. There were never mass emails thanking people before. It may have been a fluke (probably), but she took it personally.

So, snow is supposed to start here around 3am; between 7 and 10am we’re supposed to get over an inch an hour, and it will continue until about 8pm. Wife didn’t want to drive, but didn’t want to cancel. The son of the client drives a big pick-up with a plow, so at first the idea was that I would drop her off (it’s about 10 miles from here) in the morning and the son would drive her home. But she got scared of me driving when there would already be at least 5” on the road. I told her that the plows would be out and the main roads passable. She instead called the family and asked if I could drop her off tonight to spend the night, and then the son with the big truck could get her home. So, for her $15/hr pay she is spending the night all to not be shamed for not traveling in a storm. She still only gets the 4 morning hours that she is scheduled for.

I have some issues with her employer and they need to rethink their “in all weather” policy. But I went in with my wife and the first thing we saw was the elderly husband holding on to the countertop. He said, “today I went to l’hospital and ze doctor he give me blood thinner; I have no strength. Merci for your wife to stay tonight.”

She remembers her clients’ birthdays and brings flowers and sometimes candy. I know she sometimes breaks rules to do more than is allowed, but she was raised by her grandmother and has always enjoyed the company of elderly people.

Anyway, lonely tonight, but due to cancellations I won’t have to get up at 5am. Unless the dog bounds up the stairs, leaps onto the bed, and sits her 60# on my head to let me know it’s time for food and a walksie.

There was reportedly a small reconnaissance section that surrendered to the Ukrainians. I think that they are referring to that incident.

The NCO in charge was interviewed on video. He was kind of down on the whole military adventure into Ukraine thing. I suspect that he will regret that interview if he makes it back to Putin’s Russia.

I may have told this story before, but my junior high church youth group took a trip to stay a weekend in a church in south Chicago. Our hapless most Reverend (I loved this guy) promised that after volunteering at a homeless ministry we would get to go to a movie. There was only one theater in walking distance and they were showing “MASH” (Altman’s). I don’t know how he got about 15 thirteen-year-olds in, but it was quite an experience.

ETA: it was called “youth club.” Later “youth club” became a go-to place for information on parties and how to get nickle and dime bags. Late ’70s, early ’80s, so you know the vibe—terry cloth, etc.

re: #47 GlutenFreeJesus

What’s the white cloth around the Russian soldier’s leg signify? Anyone?

The white cloth is probably white engineer tape. It comes in long rolls and is used to mark paths, minefields, etc. It can be tied in pieces on barbed wire so that soldiers dont walk into it at night.

In this case, I suspect that it is being used as recognition device, to identify members of a specific unit.

” … “U.S. District Judge James Donato told a lawyer representing the former president that while technology and law might change and evolve, ‘one thing that’s been more or less a constant going back 20 years is that private companies like Twitter are not subject to the First Amendment,’” Courthouse News reports.

Judge Donato made the statement Thursday during a hearing in San Francisco on Twitter’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Trump last year, seeking the reinstatement of his account. According to Courthouse News, Donato signaled “a strong inclination” to rule in favor of Twitter’s motion.

“You’ve got a mountain of law saying ‘no’ to your First Amendment claim. It’s not clear to me how you are traversing that,” Donato told Trump attorney Marie Fiala.

Trump’s attorneys have argued that Twitter acted in concert with Democratic lawmakers to ban him, thereby making the company a “state actor.” But Donato rejected that claim.

“It’s perfectly fine for a politician to express dissatisfaction with conduct. I’m not looking for what a Democrat said at a committee hearing but an actual threat,” Donato said. “We’re talking express threats of government prosecution, some kind of criminal sanction, a taking.”

He added that as alleged by Trump, “the threat factor seems pretty low.”

“I read, reread and read again your complaint and I’m not seeing any coercive statements by state actors and that is the hook you are hanging your hat on,” Donato said, according to a report on the hearing from Bloomberg. … “

The Poles fought valiantly too against the armies of Germany and Russia, with no outside help. They lasted 26 days. I do not see this ending well for the good guys; based on their history, the Russian military is likely to have no restrictions on its use of force against civilian populations. The anecdotes that suggest a lack of enthusiasm for this war are just that — anecdotes; there is no reason to expect that such attitudes are prevalent among the military forces. They will be brutal.

They’ll take control of the city in principle, but in reality they’re looking at days or even weeks of urban warfare that has to be handled delicately if they want anything to be left standing when it’s all over.

It is true that war is horrific and brutal. It is also true that the Russians may choose to be deliberately more brutal. And it is true that the Ukrainians could still lose this stage of the war.

It is far too early to know the outcome. And even if the Russians succeed in occupying Ukraine, they still have to ‘pacify’ it and create a successful puppet government. Or tie down much of their military for years to come.

And yes, it’s a terrible human tragedy on a scale that has not been seen in Europe since World War 2.

None of us have any control over any of this. Stressing ourselves out over things we cannot control damages our ability to manage things we can control. A lot of folks are recommending that we pace ourselves and, if needed, take time off for self-care.

I have been studying this stuff for almost 60 years. And there times when it gets so intense that I need to take a break. In the end, not one bit of any stress on my part is going to mean diddly (scientific term) to how the war proceeds.

The anecdotes that suggest a lack of enthusiasm for this war are just that — anecdotes; there is no reason to expect that such attitudes are prevalent among the military forces. They will be brutal.

The Poles were effectively abandoned from the very beginning, as France and Britain had guaranteed their sovereignty without any plan on how to actually defend it. Their defense plans had assumed that they were only facing German aggression and that they simply had to hold the line until pressure could be taken off or their numbers reinforced with foreign assistance. They had no way of knowing that the Reich and the Soviets had negotiated a pact in secret to carve up the country to expand their own spheres of influence. The final factor was that they’d taken to military modernization and reorganization much later than Germany had, so that they were technologically behind and what weapons they had that were of equal measure were in short supply.

None of these are a real factor here with regards to the current conflict. Ukraine hasn’t been abandoned, it has one of the world’s largest military alliances at its back. It’s getting economic and military support, even if those countries cannot get involved directly. It’s fighting a single foe who is handicapped by the need to maintain a facade that this is anything but a war of conquest. And it is at least technologically on par with its opponent, even if its forces are numerically inferior to them. Even if Kyiv falls and the government is forced into exile, the people will continue to fight on until either Russia leaves or until they are all dead. I’m not saying that they will win in the end, what I am saying is that Russia is not going to have an easy time of taking and keeping the whole of the country.
