It surely was a day of joyful tears. And those joyful tears for Alisa Amador, the winner of the 2022 Tiny Desk Contest, came at a time when she had been considering putting her music career on hold. For the staff of NPR and the Tiny Desk crew, it was our first Tiny Desk concert with an audience in over 800 days, and Alisa’s captivating music surely intensified our spinning emotions.

Alisa Amador opened with her Contest-winning entry “Milonga accidental,” a song about embracing your contradictions. It’s a song that our judges — iLe, Big Krit, Michelle Zauner (of Japanese Breakfast), Raveena, Nate Chinen (of member station WBGO), Tiny Desk producer Bobby Carter and I — all found to be so filled with passion. I often fall for a song because of the lyrics, and this is the first Tiny Desk Contest winner whose winning song is in Spanish. Despite the fact that I don’t speak Spanish, I felt the conflict, the yearning and the song’s questioning.

Alisa grew up in Boston, Maine, Puerto Rico and Argentina, and was raised by Rosi and Brian Amador, her Latin-folk musician parents who play in the band Sol y Canto; they were also in attendance. She’s been singing since she was four, and has been entering the Tiny Desk Contest every year since 2018. In fact, the song “Together,” which closes this concert, was an astonishing entry from 2020. For COVID safety, we limited the audience to a small group of masked NPR employees, yet the sing-along for the closing track was still powerful.

Alisa also set her winning song to a lovely string arrangement performed by a Washington D.C. quartet and rehearsed for the first time just hours before the performance. The arrangements were originally done by Jamie Oshima after a recording session a few years back, and then Alisa’s friend Noah Fishman transcribed the arrangement. For the next three songs, she’s joined by Jamie Oshima (guitar, keys), Noah Harrington (bass) and Jacob Thompson (drums, keys).

“When will I know how to decipher my purpose? / When will I feel at home in my voice?” As Alisa sings those words to her winning entry in Spanish at the Tiny Desk, I’m thinking: Perhaps that moment is now.

My friend made a comment that she was getting a message that the link wasn’t going to work after some time in June but I thought she was using some NYT address.

My workplace has been going through dishwashers in an attempt to replace a really good one who had been there 15 years. They estimated three to replace her. One new one seems to be working out. Another started today. I think the one who started a couple days earlier was training him. One that only lasted a day called in sick after her first shift because she was barfing. The next day she called in quit because she’s pregnant.

Turkey controls the one and only (and narrow) sea connection between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.

They know they have that ace in the hole.

Preparing for the worst:

Paper highlights the need to prepare for the mental health issues that would follow a nuclear event in Ukraine

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 had disastrous humanitarian consequences, […] The ongoing conflict will undoubtedly have severe mental health consequences for numerous Ukrainians, yet these could be further aggravated in the occurrence of intentional or accidental nuclear events in Ukraine.

Researchers at Uniformed Services University in Maryland and Musashino University in Japan have recently published a paper exploring some of the mental health-related issues that could arise should a nuclear event take place in Ukraine. Their paper, published in Wiley’s Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, outlines some of the actions that governments and health care systems could take to prepare for the mental health consequences of such an event.

[…]

While I believe Biden has done what he has to do (in selling/leasing equipment to Ukraine), I also fear that we may be heading into a black hole of one-upmanship.

Welcome back to the MADness. The risks are real and unavoidable. The only alternative is to surrender world domination to whichever nuclear warlord is craziest.

The future is here now:

A world first: Human liver was treated in a machine and then successfully transplanted

The Liver4Life research has developed a perfusion machine that makes it possible to implant a human organ into a patient after a storage period of three days outside a body. The machine mimics the human body as accurately as possible, in order to provide ideal conditions for human livers. A pump serves as a replacement heart, an oxygenator replaces the lungs and a dialysis unit performs the functions of the kidneys. In addition, numerous hormone and nutrient infusions perform the functions of the intestine and pancreas.

[…]

The team prepared the liver in the machine with various drugs. In this way, it was possible to transform the liver into a good human organ, even though it was originally not approved for transplantation due to its poor quality. […]

The patient was able to leave hospital a few days after the transplantation and is now doing well […]

So the question is: who will make the first successful womb?

re: #29 Decatur Deb

It seems NBC is associated with all three TV adaptations. On the latest (2020) version on Peacock a critic wrote:

Why Is It So Hard to Adapt ‘Brave New World’?

In spite of smart touches like a privacy-erasing contact lens that feels like a direct descendant of Instagram and a Savage Lands that caricatures 21st-century working-class life—as well as nice moments like John the Savage (Alden Ehrenreich) getting awakened to a richer, wider world by discovering a Radiohead song—it plays less like an adaptation of Huxley’s novel than an extremely watchable dilution, with little of the ambiguity that makes the novel so disturbing. […]

But maybe a dilution is the best we can hope for. Or maybe the novel works best as a set of building blocks. Beyond Gattaca and Logan’s Run, Brave New World inspired Kurt Vonnegut’s Player Piano, George Lucas’s THX 1138, and other works (to say nothing of one of the Buzzcocks’ best songs). Or perhaps it’s just one of those books best left to work its disquieting spell on the page. Writing of it appreciatively on its 75th anniversary, Margaret Atwood, no stranger to disturbing visions of the future, contrasted it to George Orwell’s 1984, which she describes as a “horrific vision of a brutal, mind-controlling totalitarian state.” Orwell’s world might be tough to prevent, but it’s easy to spot; we’re in the midst [remember this is 2020] of a presidential administration that’s used its power to batter away at the very idea of truth in plain sight.

At least the AfD in Germany is a minority party that no national party will associate with on a national level, and they seemed to have peaked in popularity at around 13% and are currently in decline.

So the question is: who will make the first successful womb?

They didn’t create a liver, sadly. They took a liver, and kept it functional for days. What this means is that we don’t have to rush an organ from one place to another to get it implanted before it is no longer useful.

Did you read the article?

Video recordings of Republican Party operatives meeting with grassroots activists provide an inside look at a multi-pronged strategy to target and potentially overturn votes in Democratic precincts: Install trained recruits as regular poll workers and put them in direct contact with party attorneys.

The plan, as outlined by a Republican National Committee staffer in Michigan, includes utilizing rules designed to provide political balance among poll workers to install party-trained volunteers prepared to challenge voters at Democratic-majority polling places, developing a website to connect those workers to local lawyers and establishing a network of party-friendly district attorneys who could intervene to block vote counts at certain precincts.

Poll workers don’t need to call attorneys. Poll workers already have rules for dealing with questionable ballots. Rules that only seem to be a problem when one side decides that normal modes of operation will cause them to lose. None of these people had problems as long as their side could mostly be assured of victory.

Personally, I think the gun talk happening is dangerous. But, Republicans deciding that they’re going to turn “He didn’t cross the t in his name” into “his vote is disqualified” is very dangerous because they’re going to make sure that the 250+ year precedence of counting votes by having unethical people disrupt the counting is one more piece of the destruction of our democracy.

SW fanboys are a toxic mess (a subset of the larger toxic mess that brews every time a casting decision doesn’t put a white guy/woman in a role that these toxic guys think belongs to a white person).

We saw that with the Percy Jackson series where they cast a person of color as Annabeth, and we’ve seen it with lead roles and storylines that featured John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, etc. We saw that with Idris fucking Elba cast as Heimdal in Thor/MCU.

It’s fucking fiction, and even the writers/originators of the content are like - we support the casting decisions and the actors for the roles.

Lemme guess. Dumbass had the gun slung across his back like we see in countless photos of these fearful spiteful hateful fuckers going into stores carrying long guns because they feel they can (they’re invariably white, so that’s the privilege speaking). Guy sneaks up behind him, grabs gun, and robs him. Guy goes back to his car to fetch other guns, because having one wasn’t enough, and starts a shootout.

But for the availability of guns, this would not have happened.

The guy who had his gun stolen from him should lose his right to possess firearms since it was clear he had no idea how to possess one properly.

I will repeat this although I am preaching to the choir here:

If you want a gun to defend your hearth, home and family, then that is your good right and nobody is seriously or actively advocating that the government take that away from anyone.

But toting your gun around in public is another matter, and live-shooter situations in public can and do rapidly get out of hand, especially when LEO’s arrive and attempt to determine who is the good guy defending American Civilization and who is the criminal/terrorist/threat to public order…

LoL. I live in Idaho. This place is so red that it wouldn’t matter which way I vote or not. A rethuglican will be elected. But regardless of that I will be voting Dem in the mid-terms and in 24. I’m just frustrated at no forward moving progress. Hell, even a DOJ or Dept of Ed investigation/lawsuit for Title IX or X violations at the State level would be a welcome change.

I agree. There is more that he can do, and would be in a position to do if we had a Congress that proportionally reflected the share of Democratic and GOP voters, but the main thing right now is not to let things get worse.

Under the subject line “Remote work is no longer acceptble” [sic], Musk wrote that “anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. This is less than we ask of factory workers.”

The guy who had his gun stolen from him should lose his right to possess firearms since it was clear he had no idea how to possess one properly.

he lost control of his weapon and thus created a threat to those around him -
DROP THE FULL WEIGHT of personal responsibility on him for HIS OWN voluntary ACTIONS.

loss of:
freedom - he should go to jail for endangering others
finances - civil fines and lawsuits by those around him who were potentially endangered by his uncontrolled weapon
future - as you say loss of future 2A privileges

what he did after, by going for another gun and escalating, well this time he created a demonstrable threat to those around him
freedom - he should go to jail AGAIN
finances - civil fines and lawsuits by those around him who were ACTUALLY OR potentially endangered by his misuse and loss of control of weapon #2
future - NO 2A rights for this bozo. bystander SHOT people don’t get a second chance not to be shot. KILLED people don’t get a second chance.

Most of those stories about “heroic” use of firearms to prevent a tragedy are just that — stories that have no basis in reality. Ask that coworker for a link to that anecdote — you’ll probably discover it’s something they heard from some gun rights source without any substantiation.

Just like they see the 1st Amendment to mean the right to free speech without consequences, they see the 2A as the right to bear weapons with no responsibility.

correct

which is why i keep saying that this is the real fight: about responsibility.

the gun owner’s personal responsibility and accountability.

the gun owner is the only person who has total control over what is done with a weapon: storing, carrying, possessing, handling, loading, cleaning, lending, selling, brandishing, discharging, etc etc

if not the gun owner, then who? how, absurdly could it be anyone else?

and if it’s not the gun owner and they cant answer the question who, then it’s no one.
and if we can get them to start saying no one, then the real fight is defined.
because it’s a childish inanity, dumber than reinforcing doors.

no amount of banning the AR-15, or any specific gun or type will matter.
there are millions of other guns out there that are still legal to manufacture, sell, and ‘keep and bear’. And if no one’s responsible for how they are used???

same for background checks, insurance, databases, training, etc.
all great ideas, and, yes, they all would put a dent in the numbers.

but all these ‘solutions’ miss the much larger point.
the fight isn’t about the iron.
there is no argument to be made that the 2nd amendment is consequence free.
so they should be forced to make it.

No right of exercise comes without responsibilities. None.

Responsibility after the fact has nothing to do with infringing on the ‘keeping and bearing’. argue all you want about what infringed means.

But TCAF is at the center of a firestorm of controversy after announcing that NFT artist Pink Cat, also known as Saba Moeel, would be one of the festival’s featured guests. On Tuesday, TCAF announced that they are uninviting Moeel, and clarified the original intentions behind her invitation.

The controversy around Moeel intensified when social media users went through her online history to find a history of tracing artwork, tweets disparaging community artists, appropriating Black culture for profit, and transphobic remarks. Polygon contacted Moeel for comment via Twitter; she replied with the following message.

The Federal Reserve is about to start shrinking its $8.9 trillion balance sheet, deploying a second tool along side higher interest rates to curb inflation, though officials don’t know just how effective it will be.

Minutes of the Fed’s most recent policy meeting, on May 3-4, said that, “Regarding risks related to the balance-sheet reduction, several participants noted the potential for unanticipated effects on financial market conditions.” The next meeting is scheduled for June 14-15.

and this:

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon says he is preparing the biggest U.S. bank for an economic hurricane on the horizon and advised investors to do the same.

“You know, I said there’s storm clouds but I’m going to change it… it’s a hurricane,” Dimon said Wednesday at a financial conference in New York. While conditions seem “fine” at the moment, nobody knows if the hurricane is “a minor one or Superstorm Sandy,” he added.

“You better brace yourself,” Dimon told the roomful of analysts and investors. “JPMorgan is bracing ourselves and we’re going to be very conservative with our balance sheet.”

The reference to Tesla factory workers is also interesting in light of the situation at the carmaker’s plant in Shanghai.

Thousands of staff there have been effectively locked in for months, working 12-hour shifts, six days a week. Until recently, many were sleeping on the factory floor as part of a closed-loop system meant to keep Covid out and cars rolling off the production line.

Smarter businesses look at worker productivity.

Companies that have to justify their real estate holdings will pressure white collar workers to return to office. Those smart enough to recognize that they can WFH and be just as productive will not force those workers to return to office, but some will do so naturally over time because of the social aspects of work.

Forcing people to return to office when they’re going to be less productive and it costs more for them to work than stay home just breeds resentment. Going to work means transit costs, fuel costs, etc. WFH was a de facto pay raise.

That is one of the objectives of tax cuts to create a deficit in order to force cuts in social spending.

re: #180 Dangerman

the idea that they are agitating for the complete disintegration of the civic fabric of american life does not seem to have entered their enough brains at any point yet

What they may really have believed is
1. Their side had all the civilians with arms
2. The Biden voters would have peacefully accepted this power play
3. Even if Biden voters protested, the military would have willingly suppressed any widespread protests

The Germans submitted to dictatorship without a second thought — but there would likely have been violence throughout this nation if their scheme had succeeded.

The people who shelled Ft. Sumter probably had no idea of what they were setting off, either.

They did, they just assumed it would all be blown over by Christmas.

The one that Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington died storming in Glory never fell (Fort Wagner?)

We assume that Morgan Freeman survived to relate the plot details to white folks all over the North.

But Pickens stayed a Union fort, and was reinforced about the time Sumter fell. Pensacola, an extremely important port at the time, remained closed until it became a Union asset.

The successful siege of Fort/Battery Wagner on Morris Island was won by the Atlantic Ocean after the war since the entire site has since bee totally eroded away.

And it was a Confederate earthwork construction made to add to the Charleston defenses as compared to one of the masonry “Third System” forts like Pickens or Sumter that were built or under construction when the war began.

The chance to camp at Pickens might be lost to those same forces. The access road is threatened, and the Park Service staff said the next major hurricane might make it un-repairable. (Daytrippers will still visit via ferry from Pensacola.)

I don’t think different people who have different jobs are relevant to people who do not need to be in the office to work.

I understand that, but at the same time, I think the optics of the execs working from home, while the factory workers have to put in 40+ on site aren’t great. But having said that, it really comes down to productivity. If people at the executive level positions at Tesla are still hitting whatever quotas, deadlines, etc. etc. and maintaining appropriate professionalism, then that is all that should matter.

Pretty much the history of what happens to barrier islands/coast. The storms and hurricanes rearrange them.

The National Park Service is a bit at odds with Gov. De Santis and his phobia about teaching CRT. Looks like the Yankees might have to ship more powder to Ft. Pickens.

During the Civil War, men of African descent fought to preserve the nation they helped create and extend freedom to enslaved people. Black infantrymen in the 25th United States Colored Troops (USCT) carried freedom’s banner into northwest Florida. From Pensacola Bay, the 25th helped save the Union, end slavery, and prepare for a new future.

End of an era - last HoJo restaurant closes in Lake George NY.

Growing up, we’d vacation in Lake George, and this was a regular stop. It was eclipsed by other chains that did fast food faster/better and did fast casual better. The hotel brand lives on, but the restaurants are now history.

It’s an untenable situation for many Catholics, but the legal explanation is simple. In 2019, the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal ruled that the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. John’s, the archdiocese’s secular arm, is vicariously liable for sexual abuse at Mount Cashel in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s.

The Christian Brothers of Ireland, a Catholic lay order, ran the orphanage, but the court decided the archdiocese allowed the brothers to commit decades of sexual and physical assaults with impunity.

The judge awarded $2.4 million in damages to four survivors, opening a path to claims from more than 100 more.

John Doe No. 26, who waited for that court decision most of his life, spent eight terrifying years at Mount Cashel in the 1950s. The abuse was sexual, physical, psychological.

“All the time there was fear. All the time,” said Doe, whose identity is protected by a court order. The court assigned each survivor a number in order to keep the dozens of victims straight.

“My memory of that will never go away — you know, never, never, never go away. It’s imprinted.”

If they are full Civil Service jobs, the benefits are quite decent (even under the newer FERS system). The actual pay tends to run a bit lower than national salaries for comparable work. That varies a lot by career field.

If there’s a more thoroughly and irretrievably corrupt organization on the planet than the Catholic church, I have a hard time imagining what it is.

Honest although admittedly extremely biased and prejudicial question from an atheist: If you still consider yourself a member of the Catholic church, why?

I don’t. I left the religion when I was around ten years old because none of it made any sense and no one could sensibly answer my questions.

I have family members and friends who are Catholic; they love their faith and are at odds with the hierarchy. They are Dorothy Day social action Catholics who advocate for the vulnerable and the needy, welcome the stranger and call for action. They are fellow travelers with the Nuns On The Bus.
I respect their commitment.
They live their faith’s moral and ethical precepts.
