Lake Street Dive Plays “Nick of Time” on a Boston Sidewalk

We recently made a special trip to the Boston sidewalk that started it all.

10 years ago we released our cover of “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5, and today, from the very same spot, we share with you a live version of our newest cover “Nick of Time” by Bonnie Raitt. Call us sentimental, but it just seemed fitting

LYRICS:
A friend of mine, she cries at night
And she calls me on the phone
Sees babies everywhere she goes
And she wants one of her own

She’s waited long enough she says
And still he can’t decide
Pretty soon she’ll have to choose
And it tears her up inside

She is scared,
Scared to run out of time

I see my folks are getting on
And I watch their bodies change
I know they see the same in me
And it makes us both feel strange

No matter how you tell yourself
It’s what we all go through
Those lines are pretty hard to take
When they’re staring back at you

Oh Oh Oh, scared you’ll run out of time

When did the choices get so hard
With so much more at stake
Life gets mighty precious
When there’s less of it to wa-a-a-aste

Mmm-m-m-m-m-m

Mmmmmmm, scared you’ll run out of time

Just when I thought I’d had enough
And all my tears were shed
No promise left unbroken
There were no painful words unsaid

Yo-o-o-u came along and showed me
I could leave it all behind
You opened up my heart again
And then much to my surprise

I found love, baby, love in the nick of time
(Love in the nick of time)
I found love darlin’, love in the nick of time
(Love in the nick of time)
I found love baby, love in the nick of time

Ooooooo-ooo-ooo-whoo-ooo

Yeah baby
Uhhhhh-huh-uh

Found love…
In the nick of time…

Thought I’d given up…
Given up baby…

Could someone provide a simple summary of the legislation that may — or may not — be passed in the Senate due to whatever machinations were involved between Manchin and Schumer? Bonus points if McConnell is going to implode because he has no way to stop this from proceeding.

From NPR:

“After many months of negotiations, we have finalized legislative text that will invest approximately $300 billion in Deficit Reduction and $369.75 billion in Energy Security and Climate Change programs over the next 10 years,” the senators said in a joint statement. “The investments will be fully paid for by closing tax loopholes on wealthy individuals and corporations.”

The legislation — called the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 — would also continue expansions to the Affordable Care Act that passed during the pandemic though 2025 and allow Medicare to pursue lower drug costs by negotiating directly with drug companies. Democrats say the plan avoids any new taxes on families making $400,000 or less and does not include any new taxes on small businesses.

Warnock Opens Up Big Lead in Georgia
A new SurveyUSA poll in Georgia finds Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) leading challenger Herschel Walker (R) by 9 points, 48% to 39%.

In the race for governor, Gov. Brian Kemp (R) leads challenger Stacey Abrams (D) by just one point, 45% to 44%.

Democrats Pull a Fast One on Mitch McConnell
“Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said last month that he wouldn’t allow the Senate to pass a bipartisan bill on computer chips if Democrats tried to revive their ‘Build Back Better’ agenda,” the HuffPost reports.

But Will Sinema Back the New Manchin Tax Deal?
“Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) has spent the summer out of the spotlight. That’s now going to change,” Axios reports.

“Solving the Democrats’ tax and spending puzzle in the Senate — where President Biden’s agenda has stalled for over a year — has always involved two key pieces: Sinema and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV).”

“But much of Washington is flying blind on whether she’ll back spending $369 billion on climate and another $64 billion on health care by raising the corporate minimum tax rate to 15%.”

A war with Russia is inevitable. They will continue to attempt to rebuild the Russian Empire, and the fact that many former parts of the Russian Empire are now NATO or EU member states does not matter to them.

We must crush them, no matter the cost.

It’s them or us - and there is no “peaceful coexistence” with a murderous, genocidal regime.

That cost could well be nuclear war…which is why we need a measured approach, although I agree that the current autocratic, oligarchic regime needs to be toppled. The hard part will be replacing with something that is not equally as bad or even worse.

I am sure that Putin will be able to find other customers, but none as close or lucrative as the established system as it exists Western and Central Europe.

I know the Russians are working with China on a natural gas pipeline, but that’s not likely to be up and running until 2030, at the earliest.

And yeah, it’s gonna be a rough winter, especially for Czechs. For reasons I’ll never understand, people here keep their heaters going at full blast during the winter. Seriously, you walk into someone’s apartment here in mid-January, and it’s like walking into the Las Vegas strip on a hot August afternoon.

I typically keep the temp set around 16 or so. Which is fine for me.

That’s a bit cold for my family, but I live in a country where gas is plentiful and cheap. In January, when air temperatures can top out during the day below 0 °F (-17.8 C), I can keep my house at 70 °F (21.1 C) without breaking the bank.

When I lived on-campus in college, our dorms were heated by hot water radiators that were controlled from a central boiler. It was extremely common for rooms to have windows cracked and fans running, even in January.

There was a Brezhnevka building in Prague I used to teach at twice a week and yeah, it was the exact same problem. It was like being in a sauna. It got so damn hot indoors during the winter you’d have to open the window.

The Atari 2600 is back - as a LEGO set.

LEGO announced last week that it will be releasing a re-creation of the popular video game console on Aug. 1 for $239.99.

The LEGO Atari 2600 set is based on the four-switch revision of the Atari 2600, which was released in 1980, three years after the original console was released in 1977, according to a press release from LEGO.

Customers who buy the new LEGO set will be able to build their own Atari 2600 game console with features including a controller with a joystick that is supposed to feel just like the original, the release said.

When it’s built, the LEGO Atari 2600 opens in the front to show a pop-up scene from a 1980s gaming room, according to the release.

The set also includes brick versions of three iconic video game cartridges: Asteroids, Adventure and Centipede, the release said.

The U.S. economy contracted for the second straight quarter from April to June, hitting a widely accepted rule of thumb for a recession, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Thursday.

Pressured by surging inflation, rising interest rates and intensifying supply chain pressures, gross domestic product fell 0.9% for the period, following a 1.6% decline in the first quarter. The Dow Jones estimate was for a gain of 0.3%.

Officially, the National Bureau of Economic Research declares recessions and expansions, and likely won’t make a judgment on the period in question for months if not longer.

But a second straight negative GDP reading meets a long-held basic view of recession, despite the unusual circumstances of the decline and regardless of what the NBER decides. GDP is the broadest measure of the economy and encompasses the total level of goods and services produced during the period.

On heat in buildings. Central heating is not common in residential housing in Japan. When I lived in the far north, I would turn off my kerosene heater at night, climb into my futon, pull on my stocking cap, and sleep (winter, obviously). When I woke up, I’d reach over to turn on the heater and wait for the room to warm. I also recall living in houses in Tucson and Phoenix that had heaters in the bathroom and nowhere else.

Uvalde parents stormed out of a school board meeting last night..chanting “no justice, no peace”..after the board refused to accept any responsibility for the deaths of their children.

No school board is going to make a statement like that unless they want to get piled with lawsuits from here to eternity.

No school board is going to make a statement like that unless they want to get piled with lawsuits from here to eternity.

Here’s the thing.

Police failures. School board failures.

All of those will spawn lawsuits.

Guess who ultimately pays those lawsuit settlements and costs?

The very taxpayers and families who will see settlement money. Uvalde will hike taxes/fees to cover the costs for settlement. Insurance can cover some of those costs too. But ultimately, the settlements get funded out of what taxpayers bear.

We’ve seen that nationwide - like NYC has hundreds of millions in settlements with NYPD abuse cases a year, and that is a cost borne by NYC taxpayers - the NYPD and the police union don’t face those costs directly and personally.

Maricopa County elected Law-and-Order Sheriff Joe Arpaio who promised to keep costs down by doing things like housing prisoners in tents out in the desert and cutting procedural corners wherever possible.

And as a result, they got saddled with over $100 million in legal costs stemming from his abuses.

If Manchin played McConnell, that is wonderful. Adding that to Rand Paul vetoing a judge McConnell wanted, makes it a bad month for McConnell, and a good one for America.

Basically anything bad for Mitch is good for America and vice-versa.

Last year right about this time, the cities in the nearby Ahr River Valley were wiped out in a flood, with dozens killed.

Now the Ahr is so low that you can literally stand astride it where it flows into the Rhine

On Monday, I’ll have to go and take a look at the Ostravice River, which runs through the city center here. It’s normally a pretty shallow river (knee depth) during summer, but I’d bet it’s probably lower than that now.

Except for the minor detail that they’re depleting their stocks of almost everything war materiel, and have no way to replace them. Certainly we need to continue to support Ukraine and remain vigilant, but for the rest, the threat doesn’t seem imminent to me.

Mad Max Thunder Road also caused those dateless wonders to freak out for its strong female leads and feminist themes.

Now if you are the sort of non-toxic, non-alienated guy who actually has a girlfriend to invite out to the movies, that is a positive aspect, you can get her to come along and there will still be enough explosions, car crashes and flame-spouting guitars to keep it interesting for the both of you.

It’s more that the “established, canonical” character looks like a white American male, and has no demonstrated shapeshifting powers. Because the common tropes (alternate universe, different time period, “retirement”, parallel character development, etc.) can’t possibly explain why a man-shaped alien calling himself Superman exists.

From Josh Marshall’s mini-editorial about this today at TPM:

The question is whether enough House progressives will take the lead of Senator Bernie Sanders and vote against the bill as a giveaway to corporate America. But the administration seems to have members of the House Progressive Caucus broadly on board.

Most importantly, that determination is left up to the actual owners of the intellectual property, or the licensees thereof. As a fan, I don’t get to unilaterally declare something “isn’t Tolkien” just because it has Black people in it. If Christopher Tolkien says it’s okay, whether I disagree with him or not, it’s canon. As a fan, I don’t get to unilaterally declare something “isn’t Tolkien” just because it has Black people in it. If Christopher Tolkien says it’s okay, whether I disagree with him or not, it’s canon. Dwarves can be Black.

What if Tolkein got it wrong??//

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience.

I’m an engineer with over 20 years of experience, and I don’t like this at all. The pessimists in our organizations are the ones who haven’t had an idea in decades, and either don’t want to do anything or don’t want to get blamed for anything.

If someone can explain why something won’t work, great, all ears. If someone just tells us it’s not going to work because that’s how the world goes, thanks for the input and please leave.

The goal of most propaganda isn’t blind belief of the propaganda. It’s despair, cynicism, and pessimism that makes the victim not bother to try to fix anything but sit around their house and smirk at anyone who does.

I have been wondering if the way to attack this is an equal rights argument.

I’ve said it before.

Even if the ‘unborn’ are constitutional persons (they aren’t) that would not give them automatic, unquestionable, superior rights over anyone else. There is no special protection or class.

Whether that be the mother or me.
No difference.

We argue conflicting rights cases all the time.

Yes I know some people are more equal than others. And I still think the fundamental argument is about bodily autonomy for everybody. Still I think this might be one avenue of the fight.

Definitely would not work. That would mean that in any anti-choice red state where a woman wanted/needed to terminate a pregnancy, she would have to go to court to argue the case. It is not only the financial costs that would burden both the court system and the individual woman, it is also the danger to the woman’s life when hours could make the difference between survival and death/permanent physical harm.

ICYMI: Another “Major Lawsuit” pending (maybe) from TFG… (via TPM)

Donald Trump said today that he plans to sue CNN for defamation, claiming the network and digital news outlet has been defaming him since the 2016 election. And he takes specific and particular issue with use of the term “Big Lie,” a phrase which nearly every mainstream news outlet in America has used as short hand for his attempted coup since the 2020 election.

Trump put out a statement through his Save America PAC today, saying he’s “notified CNN” of his “intent to file a lawsuit over their repeated defamatory statements against me.” He also said he does, in fact, plan to go after other media outlets.

“I will also be commencing actions against other media outlets who have defamed me and defrauded the public regarding the overwhelming evidence of fraud throughout the 2020 Election. I will never stop fighting for the truth and for the future of our Country!”

Which, okay. Best of luck.

In a 282-page letter that Trump’s lawyers sent to CNN executives on July 21, the ex-president’s attorneys warned the network to retract or correct a bunch of online articles and comments made on live television. The lawyers detailed dozens and dozens of statements and published pieces they deemed defamatory, taking issue with the use of phrases like “lies,” “Big Lie,” “false narratives” and “baseless theories” to describe Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

I would REALLY hate to be the legal intern at CNN that has to slog through 282 pages of Trumpisms.

And I’m guessing their response to the threat of this suit (as usual with Dolt 45, we notice there is no actual filing, just the blustering intimation of one) can be summed up in just two words. And they aren’t likely to be “Merry Christmas”….

Of course it’s weak, the amount being spent on climate change will barely make a dent. But we are getting into “Democrats did something, but it’s not enough so F the Democrats” territory if we overanalyze it without context.

I wonder if Manchin did a calculation that if he continues to be a dick to Democratic leadership they might well decide that he isn’t worth anything to the party and thus potentially support jettisoning him at some point. (It’s already been discussed that Manchin is pretty much dead in the water if he changes allegiance outright to McConnell and the GOP.)

And with the various Senate recesses there is not that much more Senate business time before the November elections and if the Democrats make it to 52 Senators (and associated independents) than Manchin’s influence drops off the cliff come 2023.
