Today’s program from our podcasting affiliate, The Bob Cesca Show:

The Scream Of The Turtle — [Explicit Content] It’s ‘Good News Day’ on the show. The new and sweaty photo of Trump. Senate Democrats on the verge of passing major legislation on the climate crisis, the deficit, and taxation on corporate profits. Manchin screwed Mitch McConnell on the CHIPS bill. It’s happening! The Justice Department is, in fact, criminally investigating Donald Trump for seditious conspiracy. The dumbest crooks ever used the word “fake” in their emails. Mnuchin, Pompeo, Ratcliffe, and Wolf from the Trump cabinet are set to testify. Marc Short to testify. The RNC might’ve just stopped Trump from running for president. 42 Republicans filibustered healthcare for veterans. With Spicy Jody Hamilton, David “TRex” Ferguson, music by Matt Springfield, Japan Van Damme, and more!

Finally watched the full diatribe from Jon Stewart about the PACT act. The one thing that annoyed me about the whole thing, and in general annoys me about Stewart post late night retirement, is that he likes to both sides issues and/or keep the exact cause in a gray area. For example, in his diatribe he never once mentions the Republican party. He mentions specific Senators by name, but the average American has no idea which party that Senator is with. He references the Senate multiple times which allows both siders to jump on board. Not once did he mentioned the Republican party and their total failure and disgust towards veterans and the American people. Because he doesn’t once mention the Republican party if any of his quotables are printed the average American isn’t going to understand who is to blame.

Interviewed for a visiting position there and taught a demonstration class. It’s such a great school. In Lexington I had a few students from the Hazard and also Pikeville areas. They were gems, but taught me a lot about the privations of living under mountain-top blasting. Such a horror what is happening now.

Barefoot Grin  Jul 28, 2022 • 4:57:10pm

Vet related, but off topic. I have been cleaning out my desk drawers and found something. A year or so before the pandemic I was on campus in summer and an elderly gent pulled up in the parking lot and asked for directions to an office. I didn’t have anything else to do, so I offered to walk with him to where he needed to go and also to give a tour. At the end he went into his car and gave me a US Army Special Forces Association medallion with information about the chapter it was from. He said, “just go into a bar and put this down. I guarantee you someone will pay for your drink.” Is this a thing?

After tax cash value will be a lot less of course, only $493M here in California.

A lot of money, because a lot of people are hoping to win it.

Regulatory capture in action:

Following whistleblower complaints, the Federal Aviation Administration said it has substantiated allegations of “overall mismanagement and lack of oversight” at a safety office responsible for Southwest Airlines.

The FAA said there had been “interference on the part of FAA senior leadership” from 2018 through 2020 at an FAA oversight office in Irving, Tex., near the airline’s headquarters.

Citing its review of extensive interviews from a related investigation, the FAA said one of the agency’s top safety officials came through Texas for a visit and apologized to Southwest because local FAA safety officials had supposedly been too “heavy-handed” with the airline.

Such coziness by the nation’s top aviation safety regulator bubbled up elsewhere, the FAA acknowledged. An FAA manager said there was a strong friendship between Southwest’s top executive and a senior FAA official in Washington, “with near weekly texts, emails or phone calls” between the men, according to an April report by the FAA’s Office of Audit and Evaluation released this week.

“This raised questions among inspectors about whether they would be allowed to perform their oversight responsibilities appropriately,” according to the FAA report, which summarizes findings from other internal and external reviews, including a 2020 audit report by the Transportation Department’s Office of Inspector General and an investigation by the Senate Commerce Committee.

Random code. The other day, I put up an image of some python code that generated all possible permutations of a sequence. That one generated them all at once, and you had to provide a listener as they were generated.

The new one fixes that problem. With this class, you keep calling next() to get the permutations.

Dwarfs you? China has about twice the CO2 emissions of the US. I wouldn’t exactly say “dwarfs”.

My opinion is that starting with The Wall his stuff went from cynical to outright negative. And unfortunately without Gilmour and others from Pink Floyd as leavening or otherwise a limiting factor like it still was on The Wall the output (e.g. The Final Cut as a prime example) sounds like whining and being pissed off his father was killed in WW2. It might be musically complex and interesting as some of the reviewers claim, but to me it’s something I have no interest in listening to a second time.

Russia’s demographic implosion continues:

The decline surpasses the previous record contraction of 57,000 people a month in 2002, when Russia’s population shrank to 145.3 million from nearly 146 million the previous year.

Russia’s population has fallen to 145.1 million after a decline of 430,000 people, according to Rosstat’s latest demographic report.

The rate of Russia’s population decline has almost doubled since 2021 and nearly tripled since 2020, according to The Moscow Times’ Russian service.

re: #111 Dr Lizardo

I’m old enough to remember when “grooming” was called “recruiting”. It was definitely a popular CT flying around in the 1970s.

I still remember Proposition 6 in California; one of the arguments made by its proponents is that gay schoolteachers would use their position to “recruit” straight kids. Fortunately, Prop 6 was defeated.

I grew up in the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” era. It wasn’t gay people that was the problem for our religious wingnuts; it was Satanists. In my high school - a public high school, mind, not a private religious school - my fellow nerds were divided into two groups: Kids whose parents allowed them to play Magic: The Gathering, and kids who were banned from playing because their parents thought it was a gateway to Satanism. Those of us in the latter group played a Star Wars card game instead.

I still recall the moral panic over Dungeons & Dragons. It was tied in to the whole Satanism nonsense.

Yes, it’s a thing. The medallion you describe is called a challenge coin. Such coins are given by military units and associations to people for which they hold great respect.

Dominionist Christianity is now the de facto law of the land, because the court that interprets all the laws says it is, and the Congress that can overrule them won’t, because there are too many states that agree with them.

Indiana GOP legislators were evenly split on whether to ban abortions in the case of rape or incest, 18-18, so that measure failed. The only other exception will be to protect the life of the mother. Rape and incest victims 16 and older will have only 8 weeks to get an abortion; chidren under 16 will have 12 weeks. So if a 10 year old child doesn’t understand what is happening to her quickly enough, and what she needs do about it, tough shit.

But with this Court, it’s not clear that Congress can overrule them. The Court can cavalierly toss out legislation it doesn’t like — as it did with the Citizens United decision and the evisceration of VRA.

Ya gotta wonder if you actually won a billion dollars in the lotto about some basic things, like where to live.

Every relative you never heard of and every legitimate and scam charity will ring your telephone off the hook asking for money.

Is it better to live in a large city like Chicago or New York, where perhaps you can blend in with millions of people, or is it better to live in a tiny village like mine, where your town can’t be found even with a guide and a supply train.

I thought about “what would I do if I actually won the jackpot outright,” and it seemed to me perhaps giving every adult in town a million dollars might be a way to help maintain my privacy. (I do have the problem of my name and address being listed in the telephone directory though.)

I would take the annuity payout. At sometime in the future I am going to die (dammit), and if that happens before my wife does, my VA disability is cut off and she is left without any money coming in. With the annuity, those payouts would likely last for the rest of her life.

My understanding is taxes would be higher, but really, when you have that much money does it matter? Plus I don’t have objections to paying taxes: As it has been noted, taxes are the price of civilisation.

Schumer and Manchin and the D’s did not ‘screw over’ the republicans

they passed and organized two important pieces of legislation that the country wants and needs. they weaved it through whatever process they could given how the current state of the Senate operates. as far as i can tell, they broke no rule and didnt break any promise or tell any lie. as opposed to say mcconnel//garland/barrett

it’s the R’s that are now deliberately ‘screwing over’ vets and marriage - both of which are totally unrelated to the above mentioned two bills. and they’re doing that because for some reason their feelings are hurt that the party in charge of the majority got shit done. and this is the only power they have now - to hold other people’s lives and well being hostage.

Every relative you never heard of and every legitimate and scam charity will ring your telephone off the hook asking for money.

The best part is that those same Republicans already voted for and passed the bill supporting veterans. Literally the only reason they are now opposing it is because their feelings got hurt by the Democrats. If it was worth voting for the first time, why not now? Oh, because you are petty and childish and want to get back at someone because you feel the process was unfair to you? Go fuck yourselves.

re: #10 rhuarc

He’s been pushing that Magic Balance Fairy bullshit since the Rally to Restore Sanity, or whatever it was, back in 2011. The movie he directed a few years ago pushes that narrative as well.

The only thing I can think of is that he’s doing a variation of what the South Park guys do: we can’t be funny if we come down on one side, so both sides must be equally bad.

I also wonder if he’s experiencing his own “When you get older, you get conservative” Dennis Miller moments. Everyone seems to have forgotten his appearance on Colbert’s show. It was the first one after restrictions were lifted and Stewart was the first guest. He went on a mini-rant about basically “Why can’t we it call it the Wuhan flu, since it’s from Wuhan?” Colbert even seemed stunned by it. It was really unclear if Stewart was joking or not.

There’s a science podcast I think I’ve mentioned before that pulls this as well. Their main goal is promote science education and only mention politics when it’s applicable. Which, fine, I understand. The problem is when they deal with stuff that’s clearly a GOP party plank, like banning abortion or out-of-control gun violence due to 2nd Amendment worship, they get all cutesy and complain that “politicians” need to educate themselves better.

And it’s like, “Jesus Fucking Christ, Republicans are the party that most anti-science policy springs from in the US! Just FUCKING NAME THEM!!!” It’s always a hoot to listen to these guys talk about voters need the political will to address things like climate change, because the offing political will is to vote out all the science-denying politicians.

Guess which party those fruitcakes belong to?

My opinion is that starting with The Wall his stuff went from cynical to outright negative. And unfortunately without Gilmour and others from Pink Floyd as leavening or otherwise a limiting factor like it still was on The Wall the output (e.g. The Final Cut as a prime example) sounds like whining and being pissed off his father was killed in WW2. It might be musically complex and interesting as some of the reviewers claim, but to me it’s something I have no interest in listening to a second time.

Would not surprise me at all to see some Christian Nationalist organization bring a “sabbath” case to SCOTUS and have them rule that all Americans must observe the Sabbath to keep it holy and cite not only precedence (Blue Laws) but also Chik-fil-A.

That would interfere with making money. Poor people work on weekends, bosses can afford to have Sundays for their leisure.

Ah, what to do if you win the lottery - especially one as big as the $1 billion jackpot.

I’d take the lump sum, which is roughly $648 million, because I probably could manage the money better than a set annuity, but I also have a different intention. After federal and state taxes, that leaves you with… a measly ~$400 million.

I’d probably scoop about $20 million off for family/friends. See that the money goes into trust to heirs (set up will/estate/trust plan). The rest would go to various philanthropic endeavors. No need to buy another house (or houses). I’d buy a new car. I’d retire. Go travel and see the rest of the national parks on my bucket list. Charity work would be my new profession. I’d invest in my community. I’d invest in people.

Even during the past year, my student loan payment has been pulled directly from my checking account, but not this month. Maybe a more full forgiveness on the horizon…???

What happened exactly? Who’s in control of Donetsk? Are the POWs Ukrainian soldiers or are they Russians being held by Ukraine? (I’m just tired enough I can’t quite parse out the details.)

Russian controlled territory in Donetsk. A PoW facility with Ukrainian PoW’s. It got shelled, and Russia is blaming Ukraine and vice versa… Most likely culprits are the Russians…

I’ll admit that I bought a ticket last round and then fell into a funk over how I was going to deal with that much wealth.

I’ve decided that I want to pay of mine and some other people’s bills, have either a small house or apartment or condo near a university where I can walk to everything, and then make a company that does to other learning areas what Duolingo has done for language. I want any person who would like to learn all of physics - or math, or history, or medicine, or whatever - to be able to go to one place and have a structured way to learn a topic, including resources for practicing. While there’s a whole lot of stuff on the internet, it can be daunting finding it.

So Alito is trying to claim that Boris’ downfall was due to his support of women’s rights? Really infuriating that he is confirming that his decisions are guided by his religious views rather than the Constitution but he will face no backlash for that policy.

White supremacist theocracy coming your way now!

Notice how brave Alito was to spout off with that crap in Rome while the Pope is in Canada.

re: #187 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

And civilization is needed to protect the property rights that libertarianish conservatives hold sacred. I’ll hold my breath waiting for them to propose a wealth tax to replace all other taxes…. Nope.

On another note, in some states, you can claim a lottery anonymously.

Trump did tell the truth at least once: When he said he could shoot someone on 5th avenue and the MAGA mob would still vote for him.

And our press would publish reports on what an awful person he shot and how it was not only self-defense, he was removing a clear and present danger to America.

re: #223 Eventual Carrion

I hope it holds. I see way too many Mastriano signs around my area.

I see the Mastriano and Trump signs here and there on the back roads. Usually the places with their acre (or two) or land, the $400,000 house and a couple of pickups and a regular car.

Went by one built up place with an expensive home, nice lawn, etc. and on both sides of it now a development of postage stamp lots and those ugly cookie-cutter $500K houses have sprouted up. I am willing to bet that was not what they planned to see happen to the farmland around them when they built the place, unless they are also said developer and are essentially cashing in on land bought 20-30 years ago.

When my brother bought land back in the 1990s he got a large enough plot with an auction and a separate purchase that if he had built a house* on it he had a location picked out where he essentially owned most of the view and also all the land for at least a few hundred yards in every direction.**

* - I doubt he’ll build one there at this point. I presume the land will go to my niece or be willed to a conservation group. Most of it is currently being farmed for soybeans or corn by a local farmer.

** - He still has issues with the neighbor who got the adjacent plot in the auction. Basically someone who does not understand what a “no trespassing” sign means when they want to ride their horses. Plus the sort of fools who put up fences right *on* the property line without thinking they need access on both sides of the fence for maintenance and mowing.

When that motherfucker finally has the five alarm coronary that’s around the corner for him, you’re gonna start seeing stories about the gargantuan amount of drugs and procedures he was having a daily or weekly basis just to keep him upright.

I mean, like “Darth Vader needing a suit of armor to keep him alive everyday” level of medical care.

No funk for me. After (as mentioned above) contacting an attorney and an accountant, neither of whom I have now, and finding out how to distribute money to my family, I would learn how to set up a PAC to contribute to Democratic candidates. They are harassing me nonstop now — but then I could help them out. Also would give a substantial donation to several charities, including those helping out our canine and feline companions. And I would take it in a single amount, not an annuity.

Now let’s just get the Fascio-McCheddarhead Johnson out of there in November. Baldwin and Barnes from Wisconsin—getting back to progressive state normal.

Average gas price in Texas is 3.761, down better than sixteen cents from last week (3.922). This is the biggest one week drop in several years.
Once again, true blue Webb County (67% Biden in 2020) has the lowest prices in the state, 3.407, while Red gouger-hell Roberts County (97% Trump) has the highest (4.659). The difference between the two counties is an astounding 1.252 per gallon.

I could be any one of about 6 of those, depending on how lazy I’m feeling on any given day.

I am still seeing pump prices in the $4.50 range around here. (Western PA north of Pittsburgh.) No idea how often fresh gasoline supplies are delivered in the area and I guess the price will adjust downward a bit then. Though there are obvious transportation costs since I think the nearest refineries are about 200-300 miles away (Toledo or Philadelphia).

Ours have just started to come down here in the wild north country; I think it came down from a peak of $4.59 to $4.19 within the past week. Notably, we never saw anywhere near the highs other folks elsewhere saw. The only $5 gas I saw was premium stuff.
