Read the Heavily Redacted Affidavit for the Mar-a-Lago Search Warrant

Politics • Views: 17,219

Well, here it is; if you plan on printing this out, make sure you have plenty of black ink left.

For the reasons explained below, the materials the government marked for redaction in the attached document must remain sealed to protect the safety and privacy of a significant number of civilian witnesses, in addition to law enforcement personnel, as well as to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and to avoid disclosure of grand jury material in violation of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.

It’s so wild that all of these protections are necessary because the former president would target witnesses for harassment and violence.

UPDATE at 8/26/22 10:16:12 am by Charles Johnson

And because he just can’t stop babbling and ranting, here’s Trump on his scam social media site responding in his usual deranged fashion.

So I had to run some errands and the car radio was tuned to MSNBC Reports on SiriusXM. And the talkers were talking about Biden calling the GOP “semi-fascists” and the @WhiteHouse making fun of the GOP reps whose PPP loans were forgiven, asking “will this damage the Democrats in the midterms the way Hillary’s comment about ‘a basket of deplorables’ hurt her in 2016?”

SiriusXM is my default when the music pod doesn’t connect right away. I may have to change that to the local traffic & weather station.

and to that

lawhawk  Aug 26, 2022 • 10:11:49am

There two main reasons that there are all these redactions in the file.

1) the national security means and measures that are compromised by Trump’s illegal possession. We don’t want others to know what was actually taken, and how that could compromise sigint and humint gathering around the world.

2) Trump and his fascist goon squads threatening law enforcement and judges working on this case.

Take your pick which is worse, because together it shows Trump should never be anywhere near a position of power, and yet the GOP continues to go all in on Trump.

w/r/t #2 do you / does anyone know whether the DOJ specifically mentioned Trump was the cause of many of those threats

13
lawhawk  Aug 26, 2022 • 10:15:07am

Trump mishandled classified information repeatedly before and after leaving office.

We know this to be the case - among the documents recovered in January before the warrant was executed showed nearly 200 documents ranging up to top secret that should never have been anywhere but a secure location, and Trump had them in unsecured locations around MAL, including his personal quarters, office, etc.

That’s why there was reason to believe other documents were present throughout the golf business.

Add to that the news that a woman was able to gain essentially unfettered access to the club and Trump and other key people in Trump’s inner circle despite faking her FL driver’s license, and that means anyone could get in and did.

MAL was always a security risk - the USSS warned about that before Trump entered the WH. Security there never improved. It was always a shit show.

It’s still a shit show.

A big problem with putting Trump on trial is that these documents are so sensitive, prosecutors won’t even be able to describe them to the jury, much less show the documents to them.

Of course the redaction doesn’t mention nuclear. That would allow our enemies know what was involved and compromise our methods/means/sigint/humint.

Why would we want people to know specific information about what Trump illegally possessed.

All of these were illegal possession of classified info. It was mishandling classified info.

They will eventually spell out broadly what was involved, and Trump will be fucked, no matter how much time Fox spends on Hunter’s laptop.

Nothing about Hunter Biden ever involved mishandling classified info - a felony of up to 5 years in prison per charge. Trump’s facing a bunch of charges just on this one thing alone.

2) if he loses, he is unlikely to go to prison anyway. He’ll just be on probation for the rest of his life, meanwhile he’ll be able to raise even more money.

He’s not getting probation for some of the most serious crimes in American history.
Best case for him, he gets house arrest, which does not allow him to fundraise on the Internet or talk to his co-conspirators.

Seriously though, I could be impartial juror. I’d take the evidence as it comes, weigh it, and consider a verdict solely on the evidence proffered at trial. I can shut out the news/social media too.

That said, I’m not sure I could spend that much time away from my job or family if we’re to be sequestered.

A Jim Crow-era provision of the Mississippi constitution designed to intentionally disenfranchise Black voters is constitutional, a federal appellate court ruled on Wednesday.

The case deals with a provision of the Mississippi constitution, Section 241, that lays out specific crimes that cause its citizens to permanently lose the right to vote. Mississippi officials initially adopted the provision at a constitutional convention in 1890, choosing crimes such as theft, arson, embezzlement and bigamy that they believed African Americans were more likely to commit. “We came here to exclude the Negro,” said the convention’s president. “Nothing short of this will answer.”

A majority of judges on the US court of appeals for the fifth circuit did not dispute that the original provision was racist and unconstitutional. But they said Mississippi had since “cleansed” the provision of its “discriminatory taint” by tweaking the provision twice in the 20th century. Voters removed burglary from the list of disenfranchising crimes in 1950 and added murder and rape to the list in 1968.

Mississippi’s Jim Crow-era felony voting law is constitutional, federal court rules (TheGuardian)

This is the Looking Glass point of no return for this country. This is as big as WW2. I would even argue this is the biggest except for the Civil War. What we have is proof positive that a former President stole the most classified documents available for his own personal benefit and refused to return them when asked several times. Now we have an unsure and most definitely loose extended custodial environment on top of it. For all we know, Bannon could have already sold this info to the highest bidder already.

If we as a country fail to prosecute this to the fullest extent the law allows, we do not deserve to exist as a country as future criminals like Trump will continue to pillage and cause direct harm to our national security. We simply cannot allow this to continue.

The short theatrical version or the Director’s cut? Either way, it’s a great film. The only German war film that beats it, to me, was Die Brücke (“The Bridge” in English) from 1956. It’s about 7 teenaged boys who think they have to defend their town’s bridge from the Americans on April 27, 1945. It’s as sad and grim as it sounds.

I had to use InPrivate/Incognito mode to access this article.

“There certainly existed probable cause to believe that the former president retained classified documents in violation of the applicable statute in a place that was not secure according to the regulations,” David Weinstein, a former federal prosecutor from the Southern District of Florida, told Insider.

“This hurts him more than this helps him,” he added.

Norm Eisen, the ethics czar under former President Barack Obama, wrote after going through the affidavit that “even redacted it is absolutely damning.”

“People are likely going to jail for this conduct,” he said.

Some national security veterans went a step further, directly calling out the 45th president and suggesting there may be a first-ever criminal case against a former chief executive.

‘Trump will be indicted’: Mar-a-Lago affidavit spells trouble for the former president and decimates his main defense (Business Insider)

So what Republicans are really seeking with all their whining is formal ratification of their farcical view that Trump (and Republicans in general) are above the law.

DeSantis should be arrested for his abuse, but the best we can probably hope for is civil suits. Maybe a GoFundMe could finance it.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Several people who were arrested last week as part of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ voter fraud crackdown were notified by official government entities they were eligible to vote, according to court documents and interviews.

The defendants told authorities they had no intention of committing voter fraud, according to affidavits, and in some cases were baffled by their arrests because counties had sent them voter registration cards and approved them to vote.

The defendants were vilified by the governor during a high profile press conference last week, where DeSantis announced the arrest of 20 people — convicted murderers and sex offenders — who allegedly cast votes in the 2020 election when they weren’t eligible to. The defendants, because of their convictions, weren’t permitted to vote.

Defendants targeted in DeSantis’ voter fraud crackdown were told they could vote (Politico)

Was it a thing to show them at parties to demonstrate just how connected he was? Or was it means to accumulate the documents and sell them to interested parties? Could he have been blackmailed, having videos or recordings held over his head to be released, unless he gave up the documents? Possibly, the man was a hoarder, unable to return things he was given, regardless of whether or not they were gifts? Maybe he was like a pack rat, collecting shiny things and stuffing them down his hole? Of one thing, though, can we be certain. He sure as fuck wasn’t reading them so as to do his job better.

Okay. I am going to let all of them completely defrost and then refreeze them.

Testing Ice Packs

To see if any of the cooling mediums were objectively better at chilling than the rest, we weighed out 75 grams of each, put them in identical containers, and froze them. We also included an equal amount of frozen water as a control. The next day, we took the containers out of the freezer and tracked their temperatures as they thawed to room temperature. The result? The liquids stayed pretty close in temperature as they thawed. While we noticed that gels consistently stayed a few degrees colder than liquids, it wasn’t enough to make a marked difference in overall performance. It also came with a trade-off: Air bubbles were often trapped in the slower-moving gels, which formed bulges in the plastic as they froze. Packs with large bumps were unsteady in coolers—no good if you’re transporting something delicate, such as a pie or a tray of deviled eggs.

re: #287 PhillyPretzel

I have a question for those who use those reusable ice packs in coolers. Do any of you have a refrozen ice pack with a bulge? I have quite a few of them and while they are not exposed to food if they “explode” it will be very messy. Should I toss them? And what should I replace them with?

I’m not sure we’re talking about the same thing, but I have leftover frozen cooler packs for prescription medications that had to stay cold on the trip home, and they’ve thawed and been refrozen repeatedly without ill effect.

Decades ago, North Dakota had billboards that said something to the effect of “Stay here awhile - Custer was alive when he left”.

Fort Lincoln SP, south of Mandan, has a rebuilt Custer House from when he commanded the 7th Calvary from there. They have period actors who act as though Little Bighorn hasn’t happened yet. The SP also has rebuilt Mandan earth lodges and rebuilt blockhouses and some occasional good fishing where the Heart enters the Missouri.

Could be. Our Costco is said to be the smallest (sq. ft. wise) in the company. We get a lot of good deals but we don’t have all the varieties of merchandise that the lower 48 stores carry. The only take out food is hot dogs. No pizza or cooked chickens. We do have many food sampling carts in the store.

After reading the affidavit I’m beginning to think it might actually be possible that Trump will be indicted and convicted.

On balance I still think it’s more likely he’ll never face consequences for any of his crimes, but this is looking really bad for him.

I’m pretty cynical about him doing any actual time. I think the worst case for him for stealing, carelessly storing, and obstructing the recovery of, [just typing that raises my blood pressure], the documents is a permanent and total voiding of his security clearance. That would prevent him from holding any job requiring one including federal elected office.

The only way he does any time is if one or more of the documents show up in someone else’s hands. If a copy of a document at MAR shows up in Riyadh, Beijing, or Moscow then all bets are off. Even with no proof that he was directly involved in its transfer, until we have proof that something leaked somehow I don’t think he gets fitted for the stylish orange jumpsuit. [For the record, this makes me angry but its the way I see it]

I find it unbelievable that there has been no leak of this classified material from Trump’s FL shithole since he left office. To do that is to assume all hostile intelligence agencies in the world are as incompetent as Trumpworld.

Plus, US institutions so favor Republicans and ex-presidents that the predicate for Trump’s FL shithole getting searched cannot possibly have been Trump’s intransigence over giving the hundreds stolen documents back.

That shit wast getting into enemy hands.

2022: NW Ventura County California looking NW

Picture from today’s drive along CA 33. We had grabbed a bag of organic pistachios up the road in Ventucopa, and were headed towards Pine Mountain Summit when I stopped for this view into Ventura and Santa Barbara County

This shot is 1.5 hours drive north of where I live. 1.5 hours south is downtown LA

Spectacular day in Las Padres Forest. It’s a very rugged and beautiful part of Southern California

re: #311 Patricia Kayden

Goddammit, no-one seems to understand that the numbers quoted for the search warrant were from the original 15 boxes recovered back in February and first viewed by the FBI in June and not the evidence recovered two weeks ago.

Why is this so hard?
