In other words, typical billionaire-class hubris.

Maybe it is genius to manage to live a lifestyle that costs millions each year without paying any taxes. Or maybe it is brilliant to lie year after year on your tax returns and escape all scrutiny. His lifestyle is financed by a Ponzi scheme? Or maybe this reflects the rotten core of our tax system and its handling of those who are powerful, especially when they have complicated returns.

Circling back to a twitter thread from several days ago …

After looking more carefully at the Wiki entry for Elon Musk and its statement about his educational credentials, I’m not sure whether it is untruthful. It says simply: he completed studies for a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics and a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the Wharton School in 1995. The inference is that he
graduated with those degrees, but it does not explicitly make that assertion.

We know that most of the giants of the software industry dropped out of college and never received degrees. So the problem here is not whether he received these degrees but whether he repeatedly lied about his background.

48
EPR-radar  Nov 22, 2022 • 6:28:56pm

re: #47 Hecuba’s daughter

That tweet leads to at least one official statement including the lie “Mr. Musk received a B.S. in Physics”

It turns out that pissing off half the planet is a good way for a billionaire to get his lies exposed.

Given what we now know of the man, that seems rather unsurprising. “Look at me, I’m married to this incredibly hot* Kardashian chick, here’s what she looks like under all those clothes, I get to hit this whenever I want” is a very Kanye attitude, and kind of a patriarchal male attitude in general.

Catching up:

On Mike Pompeo: I was at DC National Airport and saw Senator Elizabeth Warren at my gate. She was talking to an aide but our eyes briefly met and I gave the live long and prosper salute from 15 feet away. She gave me a knowing smile. Later that week I saw then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Ours eyes met and I gave him the same live long and prosper salute. He glared and put me on a mental shit list. Screw him and his sanctimonious claptrap

On Southern California: Today was the nicest day of the fall. There was a moderately entertaining car chase on TV followed by weather from the incredibly beautiful, Melissa Magee. Other cities may have stodgy old guys saying the weather but in LA it’s usually a very good looking lady in a tight skirt with really nice map backdrop graphics. The weather girls who stand to the left of the LA landmass map usually cover where I live with their boobs. Alas😎

On animals: see photo

It seems to be a bit of a theme with celebrity men who marry trophy wives. I don’t get it. It would do my wife a great disservice if I went around showing my buddies nudie pics of her. He may think he’s giving Kim K. a compliment by showing her off, but it’s a violation of her privacy and her right to decide who gets to see her naughty bits. It’s akin to rape, in a sense.

First of all, welcome back. Second of all, sorry you have to come back to this. Third of all, I’m REALLY sorry, but it’s not just you. This is their new target. They believe that LGBTQ people are sinners, and that they - and they alone - have the right to adjudge them as such and to have them summarily executed. I included three different types of images in the post to give you an idea of what catches my when I am wandering the trails. I have learned (LGF is great for that!) to try and take different types. At one point I was shooting only closeups - like the person wandering around with a hammer - everything looked like a nail. Seeing what the other LGF photographers here do with a camera has opened me up to a lot more variety. I still have a fetish for closeup highly detailed images of tiny flowers and bees. I am weird in the same way that so many lizards are - weird and knowledgeable about what interests them!

She’s actually not dumb. California, for being regulated in so many other areas, has a rather open approach to the practice of law. Why yes, you can go to an ABA-accredited law school and qualify to sit the California bar. Or you can go to the half-dozen (or more) not ABA accredited law schools in California, pass the “baby bar” after your first year, finish up, graduate with your not ABA accredited JD and be qualified to sit the California bar. Or, you could be Kim Kardashian, who is doing law the old fashioned way, studying under a licensed California attorney. She passed the “baby bar” on her third try (most people just fail) and is continuing on. I will not be surprised if, a few years down the road, we learn that Kardashian passed the CA bar, one of the toughest in the nation.

It’s a sign of horrible insecurity to have to brag that way. To justify your “relationship” to the outside world

Nicest snek in the world. Likes to appear dangerous.

But. Flattens its neck like a cobra.

Doesn’t work? Twists, turns, hisses, and strikes (but doesn’t bite).

Doesn’t work? Rolls over on its back and plays dead, emits nasty musk whiff from its anal gland.

Doesn’t work and you roll it right side up?

Rolls back over and plays dead some more.

Hey, a_b, what do hognose sneks eat? Toads. Almost exclusively toads. The Gack fluid that toads excrete from their warty bits? Doesn’t affect hognose sneks at all.

I’ve handled dozens of of hognoses. I’ve been bit exactly once- after handling a toad. The Gack fluid is like “Eat here!”

Thank you!

I really appreciate the insect and flower close-ups since I try to get that sort of shot with my Nikon. But I can also be walking around and simply want a picture of something larger or part of a landscape simply because there is a color or shape composition there that caught my eye. Perhaps what one would consider mundane, but there is still beauty there.

Emo Phillips was the opening act and he took the breath out of some in the audience with a couple of his jokes. I sat right on the front row, Al and his guitarist could spit on me with little effort. US shooting: Man kills ‘up to 10’ in Virginia Walmart store

A gunman has killed up to 10 people in a Walmart superstore in Chesapeake, in the US state of Virginia, police say.

Reports say the man, a store manager, opened fire then turned the gun on himself and is now dead.

The City of Chesapeake tweeted “police confirm an active shooter incident with fatalities at the Walmart”.

There are few details, but a police officer spoke of “less than 10” killed and multiple injured. No motive has emerged yet in the US east coast city.

Probably need several hours for reliable information. Maybe it was the store manager, but haven’t seen that report elsewhere, only that the shooter was not killed by the police; it may have been self-inflicted.

This month I saw my very first Red Rocks show in the month of November. The weather was actually quite balmy, tshirt weather if you’re moving around a lot like you’re dancing. The band was King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. They’re from Melbourne, Australia and they’ve made huge waves in the last couple of years with folks in the States who love weird music. I loved the concert! They played almost three hours and the stylistic changes and seamless changes between them were masterful. They rapped, they played a lot of death metal, they played blues. They were weird. In front of a sold out crowd at Red Rocks in November.

Here’s an easy King Gizz song. They did not play this when I saw them at Red Rocks.

Presumptuous

Bolsonaro pulling a Trump.

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — More than three weeks after losing a reelection bid, President Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday blamed a software bug and demanded the electoral authority annul votes cast on most of Brazil’s nation’s electronic voting machines, though independent experts say the bug doesn’t affect the reliability of results.

Such an action would leave Bolsonaro with 51% of the remaining valid votes — and a reelection victory, Marcelo de Bessa, the lawyer who filed the 33-page request on behalf of the president and his Liberal Party, told reporters.

The electoral authority has already declared victory for Bolsonaro’s nemesis, leftist former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and even many of the president’s allies have accepted the results. Protesters in cities across the country have steadfastly refused to do the same, particularly with Bolsonaro declining to concede.

Liberal Party leader Valdemar Costa and an auditor hired by the party told reporters in Brasilia that their evaluation found all machines dating from before 2020 — nearly 280,000 of them, or about 59% of the total used in the Oct. 30 runoff — lacked individual identification numbers in internal logs.

Neither explained how that might have affected election results, but said they were asking the electoral authority to invalidate all votes cast on those machines.

The complaint characterized the bug as “irreparable non-compliance due to malfunction” that called into question the authenticity of the results.

Immediately afterward, the head of the electoral authority issued a ruling that implicitly raised the possibility that Bolsonaro’s own party could suffer from such a challenge.

Alexandre de Moraes said the court would not consider the complaint unless the party offers an amended report within 24 hours that would include results from the first electoral round on Oct. 2, in which the Liberal Party won more seats in both congressional houses than any other.

The problem I foresee is that the Brexiting Nationalists don’t care.

NOLs… and any income that he did declare could be offset by NOLs for up to 20 years.

Trump was long known to have partaken in one of the largest NOLs by an individual taxpayer (as opposed to a corporate NOL). Massive losses get to offset any income declared for up to 20 years following the year in which the NOL is declared.

All of that is legit, but it shows that far from being a business wizard, he was running a money hemorrhaging business for years. In real estate, let alone NY real estate, that’s just nuts, since you have consistent revenue and unless you’ve made such awful deals , you should be able to eke out a consistent profit.

the only way to even get close to those numbers without bleeding actual cash is in the non-cash: super-overdeducting depreciation/amortization or accruing a shit-ton of liabilities

these are tricks that generally cant be sustained unless, as in this case, no one scrutinizes the returns. if no one’s watching, you can literally just make up numbers.

In addition those tax returns probably show enough information for some people to better figure out the shell games he was constantly carrying out with funds to defraud or cheat others since tax returns also include documentation information on where the money gained or lost was.

A high end lifestyle plus personally losing hundreds of millions of dollars in business does make one ask where all the money was coming into his personal accounts as well. Forensic accountants will be able to suss out what happened between the tax returns and all the financials provided to banks, creditors, and investors.

We have all kinds of evidence that Trump essentially ran his businesses with at least two sets of books - one delivered to the IRS lowballing income and maximizing losses, and the other to highlight revenues and income to the creditors and investors and members.

Self-righteous slime with a great attachment to wanting to power for its own sake (for petty abuse) and a great sense of entitlement based on inherited position instead of merit. Pile onto that his total lack of character and real conviction. (Well, I think he had firm conviction the world was persecuting him.)

I think the TV series gave him a lot more depth than the movie did. But the former needed him as a constant foil as well.

I just read he had two middle names:

Major Franklin Delano Marion Burns

It’s on a fandom site but I don’t recall ever hearing it before

In addition those tax returns probably show enough information for some people to better figure out the shell games he was constantly carrying out with funds to defraud or cheat others since tax returns also include documentation information on where the money gained or lost was.

A high end lifestyle plus personally losing hundreds of millions of dollars in business does make one ask where all the money was coming into his personal accounts as well. (Answer: Investors or other grift victims for the most part I guess. Plus presumably there is some money laundering going on there with Don skimming some off for himself. Bankrupting multiple casinos in Atlantic City almost sounds like a The Producers-level scheme.)

Also Mary Trump’s book shows that Donald inherited a massive money making empire from his father (and that he and his siblings cheated his late brother’s children out of their share) which Trump has been squandering for decades.

Trump and his lawyers will contend that he is not capable of receiving a fair trial as a jury could not be seated.

The J6 defendants have been trying that defense as well, and it has uniformly failed. It won’t work for Trump either. Assuming the coup he attempts after the 2024 election fails, he will face trial for at least some of his crimes.

GOP in disarray.

McCarthy wishes that things will be as chaotic and his extremist caucus as genteel as they were under Ryan (and they were already rabble rousing extremists back then too).

McCarthy has no clue what to do, and even less ability to manage it. He is awful at the job of counting - which is a core competency of the job of Speaker.

All the other dumbasses and seditionists in the possible running for Speaker have even less skill and competency to do the job.

But that’s the fucking point for them. They’re obstructionists and saboteurs who will do everything in their power to destroy government functionality, because they see it as their mission to destroy govt to claim that they’re helping working Americans when all they’re doing is burden shifting from the rich to everyone else.

The 11th Circuit is probably about to pave the way for Trump’s indictment for stealing government documents, a case that is such a slam dunk that the risible defenses he has fed the media will only be admissible as evidence of his consciousness of guilt.

Just going to point out that there is no such thing as a “slam dunk” in American law. Now, in Trump’s case, if he doesn’t get himself the best attorneys to take his case and demonstrate how he’s different from everyone else that came along, then it *might* be a slam dunk. *Might*.

People who knew Anderson Lee Aldrich - the alleged Club Q shooter who has been arrested in connection with the mass shooting at the LGBTQ bar that left five people dead - say that he frequently used anti-gay slurs.

Twenty-two-year-old Aldrich has been arrested and charged with five counts of murder and five hate crimes charges in connection to the shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs, Colorado this past Saturday night. Xavier Kraus, 23, said that he used to be friends with Aldrich and they lived in the same building near the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

“There would be times where he and his mom would get into fights, arguments, because he would be saying hateful things about whoever he was angry with,” Kraus told The Daily Beast. “He said things sometimes that probably should have been alarming to me. He used the term ‘fa***t’ a lot. Most of the time it came from a place of anger.”

(Because self group loathing doesn’t exist)

It was revealed late Tuesday night that the suspect is nonbinary. That’s according to standard court filings submitted by the suspect’s defense attorneys, who refer to the suspect as “Mx. Aldrich,” noting in footnotes that Aldrich is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. The motions deal with issues like unsealing documents and evidence gathering, not Aldrich’s identity and there was no elaboration about it.

A non-binary person targeted and killed LGBTQ+ people. Which means they would be homophobic and transphobic. This wouldn’t be a “get out of jail free” card for those pushing deadly bigotry. It would still be a terrorist hate crime incited by violent rhetoric popularized by Republicans.

Gay people can still be homophobic. Transgender people can still be transphobic. Jewish people can still be antisemitic. Muslim people can still be Islamophobic. Immigrants can still be xenophobic. Black people can still be anti-Black. Women can still be misogynistic. Betraying your own on behalf of an oppressor is as ancient as oppression itself.

Got up, turned on the shitshow from Qatar. Germany vs Japan- Germany 1 , Japan 0 on an Ilkay Gundogan Penalty Kick on 33’.

Next thing I know, Japan tie it up, on 75’, then go ahead on 83’ with two beautiful strikes. The first was a rebound after a great save from the German goalkeeper, Neuer (all world ‘keeper), the second was a free kick from the Japanese half, expertly controlled by the Japanese winger, Takuma Asana, who fended off a German fullback, got to the six-yard box and roofed a *screamer* past Neuer for the win.

Frantic, fantastic stuff. More, please!

Next up, the other half of the group, Spain vs. Costa Rica. I’ll be rooting for the Ticos. Gotta love the underdogs in the Group Stage.

I am very happy with this given the shenanigans the PA House were doing during Covid. Basically throwing roadblocks in front of the PA governor (Wolfe) simply to be conservative obstructionists.

I think, however, this missed the window for setting the post-census US Rep districts for the next decade to undo a bunch of GQP gerrymandering. Though I think the court cases over the past few years did undo a bunch of it. As of right now, the GOP got 50.8% of the popular House vote to 47.7% for the Democrats, a 3.1% margin of victory, which will only earn them at most a 9 seat majority, so the GOP didn’t earn itself a massive advantage through gerrymandering, despite their best efforts.

The unethical part of me is very tempted to tell them “No, I’ve looked all over, and I don’t see a large box outside the front. Maybe you could just send another, this time maybe in the cobalt blue.” But then the superego chimes in and ruins the whole thing.

Nope, Cats love carbs. At least, mine do.

Every Black man isn’t a Democrat so I don’t understand his point. Y’all who are still on Twitter need to tell that fool that all Black people aren’t members of the Democratic party, i.e., Hershel Walker, Clarence Thomas, Kanye West. I wonder why he doesn’t know that.

Moreover, every member of the LGBTQ community is not a Democrat, e.g., Peter Thiel, SMOTI, Matt Drudge, Liz Mary Cheney, Lindsey Graham, Log Cabin Republicans, etc.,

They have to be made to feel real pain. It is their own choice that they will not be swayed by reason, decency, or mutual benefit, and their choice that force is the only option left. They revel in inflicting pain, their every response invokes the alleged superiority of brute force over reason in human affairs. They should be made to understand that reason is not helpless, nor is decency weak. This does not mean shooting up Repug gatherings or flinging a Molotov cocktail at Fast Eddy’s Secondhand Furniture. Far from it. Serious losses of specific income producing assets could be arranged though. These assets are more sacred to them than their Houses of Superstition or their families, both of which are mere props, while their “businesses” (by which they actually mean the physical assets of their businesses) are sacred, the symbol and source of all power.

They look important in a suit, but never let them near the actual machinery that makes it work.

once again, in a large enterprise, a ceo’s job is to manage and direct the scarce resources that sales, ops and finance are constantly fighting over

that’s it.

a ceo should not be doing the job of VP of ops. nor anyone else in ops. nor should they ever step in and literally or even figuratively tweak a knob. first, it usually effs up something literally. and it effs up everybody’s understanding of who’s in charge of what.

the best ceo (imo) like the best boards of directors, don’t (and shouldnt) have intimate or in depth knowledge about how stuff works in any of the three departments. that’s what allows them to act with dispassion and without bias.

Donald Trump ripped the Supreme Court on Wednesday, a day after it rejected his emergency appeal seeking to shield his tax returns from House Democrats.

Said Trump: “Why would anybody be surprised that the Supreme Court has ruled against me, they always do! It is unprecedented to be handing over Tax Returns, & it creates terrible precedent for future Presidents. Has Joe Biden paid taxes on all of the money he made illegally from Hunter & beyond.”

He added: “The Supreme Court has lost its honor, prestige, and standing, & has become nothing more than a political body, with our Country paying the price. They refused to even look at the Election Hoax of 2020. Shame on them!”

He’s a spineless craven coward who sucks up to anyone who exhibits more power than he has. He adores bullies and thinks that associating with bullies somehow inures benefits to him.

All it does is reveal his incoherent positions and inability to take principled stands on anything. It’s all party all the time, and he never holds GOPers to account for their own wrongdoing.

In the process, he’s engaged in misconduct on behalf of Trump and likely broke state and federal election laws.

They do not buy things the way lower income voters do. They do not buy the products that lower income people do. They do not scrimp and adapt the way lower income people do.
