MY UPCOMING SHOW! 🌟
HAWAIKI: A Musical & Theatrical Odyssey at Hawaii Theatre on August 25th. Whether you’ve been waiting to see me live, or an avid fan, THIS is the show!! 🤩

🎟️ Tickets Available Here:
bit.ly

This presentation is my latest album realized. I’ve been envisioning it for YEARS. It is the biggest & most important presentation of my life because it’s dedicated to my Samoan mama who inspired me to connect with my roots when she passed. I hope you’ll join me in experiencing Hawaiki; my interpretation of Polynesia’s spiritual realm.

“Taimane returns to Hawaii Theatre on Friday, August 25th with an ensemble poised to deliver a feast for the senses and soul with a one-night-only presentation of Hawaiki; a theatrical odyssey written, scored and produced by ‘ukulele star and composer. Music, dance, costume, aerial acrobatics and spoken word will transform Hawaii Theatre’s historic stage into a mystical orb, transporting attendees to Polynesia’s spiritual home through the eyes of Taimane.
Hawaiki is Taimane’s second theatrical concert at Hawaii Theatre. In March 2016, she produced and presented ‘Elemental’ to a full house garnering rave reviews from showgoers and critics alike. This video features highlights from Taimane’s March 2016 presentation, along with clips and music for Taimane’s upcoming show Hawaiki on August 25th.
Attendees of Taimane’s August 25th show will be treated to two sets of entertainment: Set 1 - Taimane performing her ‘greatest hits’ with her band, and Set 2 - Taimane’s presentation of Hawaiki with her entire ensemble.”

Don’t forget the major role that Polynesian music (Hawaiian guitar) played in the devleopment of American country music.

Try that on a small atoll…

OK so this is just “pull up your pants” respectability politics. At best it creates a world where trans people can only be safe to the degree that they’ve already successfully transitioned, are able to hide in plain sight and remain utterly unclockable.

Anti-Abortionism is finding itself at odds with the “Keep Government Out of Our Lives” ideology that is also held near and der by a lot of Conservatives. A real conundrum

And deep down inside, all but the most rabid anti-abortionist Religious Fundamentalists wanna know that there is an option in the event that their daughter gets knocked up by some loser or raped by a relative.

That’s my nefarious doing. The Sidetoolz extension adds that wrench icon; click it and there’s a popup menu of options including “Snapshot,” which I used to grab this screenshot.

I just paid my rent a little early (very unusual) because at midnight tomorrow, they are initiating a fee to pay online using ACH. I believe that is the absolutely cheapest way for them to process payments, and they want to raise my rent if I use it. Their office is a short bike ride away. I’d write a check. I’m keeping ‘cash’ as a backup plan.

So far most of the places that I patronize are happy to accept electronic payments without additional fees.

The two exceptions are the electric and water utilities. Up until now, I have been too busy with other things. But I am thinking that I may look at alternative (fee-less) payment methods shortly. One thing I will _not_ do, however, is give them access to my bank accounts.

That was as obvious to me from the very first. The jebus-loves-da-babbies control freaks were constantly whining about getting the big, bad gub’mint out of their lives only to turn around and start pushing it into women in a way-more-intimate manner than their partners. Also obvious was that they never give a fuck about the fetus or the eventual baby. It is and has always been a matter of control over women. Nothing else. And now that the calvin-ball SCOTUS has basically given them all that they wanted, they’re starting to find out what that means. It is up to all of us to make sure they learn the lesson and never forget it.

Well it is about the kids, to the extent that their position is “kids are our property and therefore we are entitled to filter their existence and impose on their bodies” as a subset of their general agenda of “we are owed everything, your body is not your own.”

why it matters —

if delegates are awarded proportionally, the guy who gets 54% of the primary vote gets 54% of the delegates and other candidates get the rest. If it’s winner-take-all, the guy who gets 54% of the primary vote gets more than 20% of what he’d need to win the nomination on the first ballot.

Except they aren’t awarded proportionally. They’re winner-take-all. So if Biden wins, he get all 54 votes. Since individual votes don’t matter, it’s up to the states voters to insure Biden wins the popular vote there. That is all we can do.

My telephone company rent-seeks from all angles.

When we were in Canada in 2015, we’d somehow missed paying our bill ahead. As such when we found we were behind, I called the telephone company to pay them with a credit card.

CenturyLink told me there would be a $25 fee to accept a credit card over the telephone (which literally costs them nothing to accept). I said “no thanks” and asked for the mailing address so I could mail them a cheque from Canada.

Later, they started charging a fee for paying on-line. (I never paid on-line; I always pay by paper cheque with my paper bill.)

Now they are charging to mail paper bills.

They have literally off-loaded every method of paying them as a charge to you.

In good news in my area, the attempt at rent-seeking by credit card companies (charging you to use a credit card in any business) has ended. However, very few merchants have gone back to accepting credit cards.

That argument was false and contemptible back then, and age has not improved it.

I doubt the police would be willing to arrest anyone for library book napping. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done. If I were the library, though, some one is definitely losing their library card!

Libraries have also largely done away with late fees, at least around here. There is technically no penalty for just keeping a book forever, though I’m reasonably sure that would make you persona non grata at that particular library branch, and the librarian may refuse to lend you any other books until the situation is corrected. (Not that that would matter in this case.)

why it matters —

if delegates are awarded proportionally, the guy who gets 54% of the primary vote gets 54% of the delegates and other candidates get the rest. If it’s winner-take-all, the guy who gets 54% of the primary vote gets more than 20% of what he’d need to win the nomination on the first ballot.

In a winner-take-all primary, the guy who gets a plurality of the vote gets 100% of the delegates and the plurality could be 30% or lower if there are enough candidates running.

IANAL but if someone takes books from a library and refuses to return them, can they be charged with theft? Would the police be willing to take them into custody? How would the justice system handle this attempt at extortion?

It depends on how many books they took. If enough books were stolen by the same person, the library can file a complaint. Books are expensive enough it doesn’t take long to get into felony grand theft territory.

If one rare book is stolen that will be immediately prosecuted.

Some years back I listened to a lecture/podcast on Japanese writing. I do not remember much about it except for one thing…

The complexity and intertwined threads of history, multiple cultures and multiple writing methodologies was, for at least me, mindboggling.

I am deeply grateful of the willingness of so many different cultures and nations, such as the Japanese, to make so much of their linguistic and cultural richness available to to those of us limited to English.

In a perfect world, it would. But the police are stretched too thin and don’t have the time or man-power for low level crimes like this. and the DA wouldn’t prosecute anyway for similar reasons. Besides, they checked out the books. It will be a month before they’re due and the library will send several notices so it could be 6 months before it could even be possible to call it a crime.

It was an idiotic stunt. They were humiliated. In the end, that is the best possible result.

The typhoon’s track has been shifted slightly left. The latest track takes it just off-shore from Okinawa with wind speeds of 115 knots. The Japan Metrological Agency uses different classifications than the National Hurricane Center: 105 knots is classified as a “Violent Typhoon” (the highest classification).

The storm is expected to reach Okinawa on August 1 around at 1800Z (0300 August 2 Okinawa time).

re: #75 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I pay CenturyLink online every month by literally entering my bank’s checking account routing number. I have yet to be charged an additional fee for paying by that method. I haven’t tried paying it with one of my credit cards. If I did it that way, that’s where I suspect a fee for paying online would come into play. (That’s the case with my electricity and gas bills. If I pay online via electronic check, there’s no fee. If I pay via credit card, there’s a processing fee. I’m a cheap bastard, so I don’t use my credit card to pay those bills.)

As for that rent-seeking paper bill fee, according to the breakdown of fees, taxes, and service charges on my CenturyLink bill, it adds a whopping dollar per month to my total bill. It’s supposedly their way of encouraging cheap bastards to switch to paperless billing and go completely online. I may be a cheap bastard, but I refuse to go completely paperless when it comes to bills. For me, piles of bills that need to be paid are hard to ignore. Going completely online would make it too easy for me to adopt an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality.

AAA has in fact condemned other nations. Specifically, they condemned the United State government for seeking help from them to gather information on Afghan villagers and their way of life to help military operations.

Back in 1947, they submitted to the United Nations their statement on human rights, where they called for unlimited tolerance of all cultures and political systems (in direct opposition to Karl Popper). Pretty much ever since then, they’ve been embarrassed

The actual resolution they adopted does not call for “the destruction of Israel” but there sure are a lot of hot takes all over the Internet claiming they did.

They called for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions (one way, they did not call for Israeli academics from being banned to come to the USA).

They called for this because they view that Israeli academic institutions are violating the rights of Palestinians which provide information to the Israeli Defence Forces and they won’t participate in that.

As to whether Israel qualifies as an “apartheid state” as defined by the United Nations I can’t say.

You can read their actual resolution at their own site and make up your own mind about it.

REFERENDUM ON A PROPOSED RESOLUTION TO BOYCOTT ISRAELI
ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS
(adopted in March 2023 but suddenly becoming an issue now for some reason, two pages PDF)

As for the Boston mapping project, a lot of people are concerned this project is painting a target on Jews and Jewish institutions (without mentioning that Google and Mapquest have long had the same institutions).

Something about all the sudden outrage to me seems Astroturfed.

I had to jump on my landlord for including water/sewage on my rent. I specifically worked my rent agreement out so that I would never have to pay water/sewage, partly because rather than just letting me pay them, they’ve offshored it to some company in Pennsylvania that charged a 3.75 “convenience fee” to handle it. Fuck that. That’s basically a 10% upcharge on my typical month’s rate. The landlord was apologetic, so things are all right now.

I think that’s always on the landlord in Oregon, as it was in New Mexico.

ACH (Automated Clearing House) is is as close to free as can be for these bastards. For a business, it is the cheapest way to handle money. Unlike checks or money orders, you don’t need someone to prepare the deposit and make it (whether manually or using a tool like my employer’s Desktop Deposit). Cash you have to bring down to the bank and deposit anyway. And we know banks charge between 2-3% to use credit cards. It sets a fire inside me to realize that landlords are charging for ACH. They get it as part of their commercial service. Hell, they should be giving you a couple dollar discount for saving them so much time and hassle in preparing your payment.

Bank bill pay is ACH!

Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform could be weaponized to become the former president’s most powerful tool against his enemies, Forbes reported Sunday.

Already hosting almost daily messages from Trump railing against perceived attacks from the Department or Justice, Jack Smith and many, many others, Forbes’ Matt Novak wrote that it wouldn’t take a huge step for him to use it to mobilize his own army of followers to act.

Connecting to my earlier post about my experience, I was a language coordinator in 1999 at Indiana University’s summer intensive language camp when Matthew Hale’s protégé went on a shooting spree that included the murder of a Korean grad student at a church a couple of blocks from the dorm where we held the students on 3rd street in Bloomington. That’s when GG as an odious person appeared on my radar. Even before others seemed to hold GG in high regard, I already knew him as a terrorist supporting asshole in the name of “free speech.”

I doubt the police would be willing to arrest anyone for library book napping. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done. If I were the library, though, some one is definitely losing their library card!

When I worked in a university library the penalties for overdue books* ran like this:
1. Fee per day (usually $0.25 - but this was 40 years ago)
2. Borrowing privileges revoked
3. List was reviewed periodically and I think once the overdue time exceeded 90 days they would bill the person (usually a student) the cost of the book.
4. I believe the senior librarian also had capability to escalate things to Student Affairs which could lead to fun things when graduation came along or trying to get transcripts.

* - Faculty, of course, suffered no penalties whatsoever. And as a result some heavily abused their borrowing privileges.

If you wanted to borrow reserved materials (books or photocopied articles put there for use by a class) you had to leave your university ID at the desk and also could not take the materials out of the library. My biggest kerfluffle while working there was refusing to give a reserved book to a professor who asked to check it out to take it with him.

I am firmly on the side of the dirtbikes and ATVs. I hope they fucking ruined that green.

I live in a place where there are at least a half dozen private golf courses that demand $100,000 sign up fees with $15,000 annual dues. And that’s on the low end of some of these fucking places. Augusta National in Georgia, their books are completely secret.

I know there are a lot of Lizards who enjoy golf, and that’s fine. Plenty of golf courses built in an environment where their mere presence doesn’t affect the water supply too much (the American southeast, where there are a fuccktonne of golf courses) but where I live it’s just (pardon my french) retarded. And it gets worse when you get to southern Utah and the Las Vegas Valley. Golf courses should not exist in those areas and yet there they are in very high numbers, straining the water supply for a really stupid activity.

Have I said how much I hate golf?

re: #219 teleskiguy

You raise an interesting series of questions!

Beyond the social media issue, which is indeed interesting in itself, the original ‘misdeed’ also raises some other important questions.

In the DC region, there have been a number of cases where dozens to hundreds of non-street legal atv’s/motorized bikes/etc have driven as a group onto major roads, including the Washington Beltway. Where they entangled themselves with general auto and truck traffic. In general, the legal vehicles basically pulled over and waited until the goat rope moved on. As far as I know there were, fortunately, few accidents.

The only fatality that I am aware of is when a cop tried to physically halt one of the drivers. Which resulted in the death of the underage operator and the conviction of the cop for that action.

So, what can and should be done in response to incidents like these? And to incidents (unlike this) that endanger innocent passersby?

It’s a new thing (became, we’ll call it, “endemic” this summer), but these big ATVs (Polaris RZR is the most popular) are everywhere now. It’s so bad in Moab, UT in the summer that these things sometimes outnumber regular automobiles. And they are very loud. And people trick them out with bright strobing lights and American flags and whatever, that’s just what I’ve seen in my town, four hours from Moab where it’s an existential problem for the locals.

We dodged the bullet on the thunderstorm. The severe thunderstorm turned west and merged with the line of thunderstorms moving east, then the line lifted away to the north. We’re getting rain but not much else.

Behind this line it seems to be clear.

The National Weather Service has us scheduled for thunderstorms for the next several days.

Arrest them all. I used to have an article posted at my bike shop about a cyclist who pleaded guilty for killing a pedestrian, in San Francisco IIRC. Pedestrians have right of way everywhere (that I get to make the rules).

“Not a Dr—- aw, fuque it.”

Former Spokesman-Review editor Steve Smith accused of paying girls to provide him sexually explicit videos (Spokane Spokesman-Review, July 21, 2023)

Former Spokesman-Review Editor Steve Smith had a “very large amount” of images depicting child sexual abuse in his possession and was downloading more when investigators searched his home Thursday afternoon, according to court documents filed Friday.

Smith, 73, served as executive editor of The Spokesman-Review from 2002 to 2008 and taught journalism ethics at the University of Idaho for about a decade until 2020.

He was arrested by Washington State Patrol detectives Thursday on 10 counts of first-degree possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Investigators indicated more charges are likely.

He made his first court appearance Friday afternoon in a yellow Spokane County Jail jumpsuit. He was represented by a public defender and was ordered held on $25,000 bond by Spokane County Superior Court Commissioner John Stine.

Homeland Security investigators were looking into children using social media to send sexually explicit photos of themselves in exchange for money sent via CashApp, according to court documents. Smith became tied to the investigation through a CashApp account registered in his name.

In March, a federal search warrant pertaining to child pornography in the Western District of Kentucky helped investigators obtain information on two Instagram accounts used by the children, according to court documents.

A spokesman for Homeland Security Investigations said in an email Friday he could not comment on the status of the Kentucky investigation or whether it resulted in criminal charges elsewhere.

I know it’s fun for some people, but it’s a terrible land use, and worse waste of water.

What is more fun and also sustainable? Disc golf. Any year now there will be more rounds of disc golf played than ball golf. And 90 percent of courses are free. Including my two private disc golf courses on previously tilled land - I have planted more than 16,000 trees to reforest it in the shape of fairways. This year I am focused on transplanting baby black walnut volunteers. (Many older courses are on flood plains where nothing else can exist.)
