The wet heavy snow hasn’t really kicked in yet; the road is clear, the driveway mostly so. I’m just finishing up smoking a leg of lamb for a late dinner, and then I’m going to pack it all up and wait for the snowpocalypse.

The video of the guy on the left seems to show him still badly concussed from the beating(s) that he received.

The guy on the right is the one who the Russian police cut the ear from and shoved it in his mouth. And then posted the video. The Russian who did it appeared to be wearing either a Sonnenrad/Schwarze Sonne patch (Neo-Nazi Black Sun Wheel) or a Kolovrat (Neo-pagan Slavic Nativist equivalent).

I recommend Episode 67 of It’s Complicated, with Asha Rangappa and Renato Mariotti. I listen every week, but there was especially good stuff this week. They go into how off the wall The Loose Cannon’s latest papers are, and it also goes into the details of how hard it would be for Trump to get bonding. For something like this, the bonder (is that a word?) might charge 200% for the expenses and trouble of having to execute the bond. So, that means about a billion! No wonder he is screaming!

She’s fucking nuts.

The article basically claimed that the underlying problem is that she is in over her head. Random assignment of cases does not work out well when a complicated case is assigned to a very inexperienced judge. The author asserted it isn’t that she’s biased but more that she doesn’t know what she’s doing. The ABA evaluation ranked her as qualified for the position. It seems that there should be some weighting of experience in determining who should be assigned a case.

Belafon  Mar 24, 2024 • 4:38:27pm

I suspect a lot of you know this about caramelizing onions, but for the rest of us:

I first learned this tip from Cooks Illustrated, and have been using it regularly since. Typically, you start with a pan, then add butter or oil and your onions and sauté on low heat until they start to cook down, stirring constantly. In this method, you add the onions to a skillet (preferably nonstick) with a little oil and salt and notably, water. About 1/2 cup is good for a big batch of onions. Once the water is boiling or close to it, put a lid on the pan so the onions can steam.

This essentially massively speeds up the process of wilting the onions, which can be the first 15-20 minutes of the sautéing process. And what’s more, the water at the bottom becomes infused with all the sugary onion juices, distributing those sugars evenly through the onions. The resulting onions are softened in a matter of minutes, leading to caramelized onions in a few more.

Is that image real?

Shown: Damaged people.

On full display is what happens when someone has sold their soul for money and did not appreciate that life is about time and that time’s value is centered on with whom we spend it.

Break the Wall Street/Main Street businessmen off, the ones who care more about rational olicies they can make business decisions about. We are seeing those Nikki whale supporters being wooed by Biden with some real success. I htink a lot of these people will be happy with Dem moderates, as boh have similar fiscal views.

This leaves working class whites/rurals. I think the progressive wing of the Dems could peel these off with things like two years of community college/training to give them the skills they need to compete and with WFH initiaitives to give rurals more than extractive industries.

And no one wants the evangelicals. By completing this, we end up with a broken GOP and a super Democraitic party that will likely break into two new parties — a conservative/moderate and a liberal one.

So I hope. But the first thing is to break the GOP and to do it now.

I’m praying that the woman Democratic candidate who has yet to run even one ad drops out of the race so that David Trone can win. He may not be perfect but he’s a Democrat. Hogan’s win could flip the Senate to the Republicans.

Know what you mean. The worst of these transitions can be very traumatic - Civil War, Depression/WW2. Living in the middle of them is horrendous.at the moment we are kinda on the knife edge. What holds me up is that at about this time in 1864, Lincoln was not expected to get the nomination at the convention and was being attacked by multiple candidates. By the convention, however he was the candidate and he did win.

Hope the next 6 months are similar.

I tend to disagree somewhat (though I think your basic premise is more-or-less sound): the MAGA “base” is, IMO wider than *just* the hicks and Jesus-jumpers “working-class whites/rurals” and politicized evangelicals: though pretty much all of them reside fixedly in a RW-media bubble. The latter problem is the worse one, in my estimation: we can snark away about “alternative facts/reality”, but on a political level, an awful lot of folks (I.e. voters) live there full-time…

Yeah, I simplified somewhat since my posts can run long. I mainly focussed on those who might be attracted by rational political approaches. We break those off and the GOP loses all at the national level. The question is how many crazies will be left behind. I hope that with the loss of political power they might simply grumble and stay home. I hope.

So many Americans are in an existential crisis, a crisis because modernity in 2024 forces a reevaluation of old beliefs and practices.

People prefer to believe some fantasy, about the America of the past that was better, and so on.

It’s a universal problem, and is at the heart of the ineffective nature of our politics.

You can get better interest in a savings account, I think. That 1.9% is way under the current bank lending and saving rates. Here in the UK I’ve got a building society savings account (ObUS: Savings and Loan) that’s paying 5% annual before tax.

- having cash in the bank and a manageable loan is better than having less cash and no loan
- the last part of a term loan is mostly principal, so the loan has mostly been ‘paid for’ already. this is interest free money.
- already having a loan is better than having to ask for one

if you can afford to pay off the loan, then you dont.
you keep the money and use it to pay the loan each month.

and if something unplanned or unforeseen comes up, you still have that cash available, just in case.

correctly managed debt, like this, is not a vice, or to be feared.

if you don’t have a credit issue (ie need to reduce your outstanding credit to say, better qualify for a mortgage), then there is, imo no benefit to paying of a loan like this early.

one danger’s opinion

First it’s Tennessee pushing a bill to ban chemtrails.

And now GUESS WHO jumped on the bandwagon to ban them?

Well if you guessed it’s none other that Pennsylvania’s State Senator Masterbateriano…hey you’re right!

The bill proposed by Sen. Doug Mastriano would ban the release of substances affecting the state’s temperature, weather, or sunlight into the atmosphere over Pennsylvania by updating a state law passed in 1967 to regulate amateur efforts to tinker with weather modification.

The law was first inspired by “unauthorized attempts to suppress hail in central Pennsylvania,” requiring anyone who wanted to try cloud seeding to obtain a license first, according to the Pennsylvania Capital-Star, which first reported Mastriano’s memo on Friday.

A spokesperson at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture told the newspaper that it had never received a license application and had never investigated unauthorized cloud seeding.

Nevertheless, as Mastriano insisted in a memo to his colleagues this week, “Recent developments and new technology have brought forward the need to modernize the 1967 law.”

Mortgage interest is deductible. Car loans aren’t in less you’re self employed and use it for the business.

The balance on my car is about $18,000 with almost two years to go to paying it off. The interest rate is 1.9%. I have the cash to pay it off and be done with the payment and it wouldn’t hurt me one bit if I did. Should I pay it off now?

No reason to. You can earn more in a money market fund.

On a different note, here’s a poem I wrote I thought many of you would appreciate.

STARS

I looked to the stars tonight
And all I saw was you.
That time we danced by candlelight.
All the wars we battled through.

That summer night I held your hand
Our first quiet autumn trip.
A hundred things I should have said
That never left my lips.

The little pranks you played on me,
The lame, unfunny jokes.
That goofy hat you used to wear,
When we spent time with your folks.

Ours weren’t always easy lives
There were times of guilt and shame.
But if I ever had the chance
I’d go back there just the same.

I remember how you hugged me so,
I remember your sweet touch.
The moments that we shared together,
How I miss them oh so much.

We were two imperfect people.
“Too different”, some might say.
But we always made it work
Because we wanted things that way.

It was worth every dime and penny.
Worth every bead of sweat.
Worth every little, annoying thing.
Worth it all, and yet…

I never knew what it would feel like
If I didn’t have you here.
To calm my ever racing mind.
To loose me from my fears.

There’s a subtle breeze in the evening air,
A few distant, drifting clouds.
No bright lights distract my gaze,
No busy, noisy crowds.

It’s just me and my thoughts out here,
And a future still untold.
I don’t know where the story goes.
I don’t know what’s down that road.

Things are so much different now,
But I suspect somehow you knew
That when I looked at the stars tonight,
All I saw was you.

We have a car loan with Nissan at 2.99%. It’s way more money efficient to have to service that loan than draw upon savings earning around 5%, even after paying tax.

This is one of many solid savings offers:

I tend to disagree somewhat (though I think your basic premise is more-or-less sound): the MAGA “base” is, IMO wider than *just* the hicks and Jesus-jumpers “working-class whites/rurals” and politicized evangelicals: though pretty much all of them reside fixedly in a RW-media bubble. The latter problem is the worse one, in my estimation: we can snark away about “alternative facts/reality”, but on a political level, an awful lot of folks (I.e. voters) live there full-time…

The ones of my acquaintance are not evangelicals or working-class whites/rurals, but they all reside in the “alternative reality”. Maybe it’s the white supremacy that has them in its hold or the anti-immigrant fervor. But they are all people living comfortably and financially secure. There is one that I have slight hope that maybe can be brought to see the light — he talked to me about how we are faced with two weak candidates. In the past, he seemed to have bought into the Biden crime family nonsense. But most of our conversations are non-political and, given our ages, very health focused.

re: #149 Dangerman

And if you have sufficient money, you can earn 5% on the funds keeping it in the bank while paying 1.9% interest on the loan.

Dr put me first on Victoza 4 months ago that I had to inject daily then I went on Ozempic. So far I am down 5 pounds but the big fall is the a1c into the low 6 range.

I take Trulicity (lowest dose 0.75 mg). There are doses up to 4.5 mg or 5x what I take now. I did drop about 45 pounds since being on it, but I’ve plateaued and I could probably lose another 30 or 40. I see the doctor tomorrow and I’m wondering whether to ask about it. Thing is, my A1C is in the mid 6s (and would probably be better if I wasn’t so stressed out) and my concern is that if I up the dose, I could be dealing with hypoglycemia, rather than hyperglycemia.

Hey! What you had for dinner sure beat Navarro’s Bean Soup! 😉

But then again I liked how Grandma made her Bean soup from scratch with chicken stock or chicken broth. She chopped a lot of celery, onions and carrots adding them after the chicken broth. She never used a ham hock.

I wish I had Grandma Bacon’s bean soup recipe. Campbell’s or Rao’s don’t come close to how good Gram’s was.

The rest of world is probably watching this unfold like one watches courtroom videos on YT or TikTok of guys with gold-plated watches and blinged-out street racers trying to convince a judge that while they got the money “right now” to get caught up with their house payments and avoid getting tossed out on the street that they can’t use it because they got bills, they got kids to feed, they got other loans they gotta pay back, and begging the judge to “give me more time.”

I like how it’s 2024 and there’s still people saying “Trump would never do that” as though we haven’t watched him repeatedly do stuff they were also confident he’d never do. I’ll call it right now: He’s going to file for bankruptcy to stop James from collecting on the judgement. He’ll be the biggest fucking baby about it and treat every moment as though it is the worst political crime in our nation’s history, BUT he’ll do it because he’s positive that his deal with Beelzebub is still good and some higher court will let him walk free. And before you point out all the details and points of a bankruptcy that he either can’t or won’t abide by, I’ll save you time: It’s just another shell game meant to buy time.

I’ve come closer to seeing this as a real possibility. The thing holding me back is what happens if he wins in the end and does not have to pay? Can he undeclare his bankruptcy? What happens to any properties sold in the meantime?

Any money seized or acquired as a result of property sales would be refunded and any property not sold returned to him if the appeals court rules in his favor. But the sales themselves would effectively be final, he couldn’t just call up the people who bought them from the city and demand their return.

His gamble is that the full panel of appellate judges will either drop the bond to $100m or just grant him a stay on the ruling in full, absent which he’s left choosing between bankruptcy or watching his empire picked apart in the belief that he’ll end up winning oodles of political support for being seen as a “victim.” Personally, I think he’ll just declare bankruptcy and try to pretend to his voters that it was done under duress.

Called that shit, didn’t I? “Oh, I’ve got all this money to campaign on and they’re trying to take it away from me!!!” Everybody was asking why he’d claim to have the money on hand while his lawyers were swearing on a stack of Bibles that he was poor as a church mouse, yet Faux that same night was already starting the “THIS IS ELECTION INTERFERENCE BECAUSE HE NEEDS THAT MONEY TO RUN!!!” talking point.

My prediction is when the appellate court tells him to put up or shut up, he’s gonna squeal even louder that they’re also a part of the “conspiracy” and that’s why he needs the Supreme Court to intervene and save his ass.

Yep, a major party candidate who is not only fighting over $600m in civil judgments against him, but is fighting 88 criminal charges (with the possibility of one or more convictions for such) by the time he washes up at his party’s convention. In any other year, he’d have been considered unelectable before the primaries had even started. Yet not only is he still considered a viable candidate, but the party’s leadership and the bulk of its voters are “ride or die.”

Was this the one where somebody said Trump picked up somebody else’s ball and threw it into a sand trap?

That one is an anecdote going back to before 2016. There was an article about Trump’s golf antics that included it. Plus the fact that pros would play with him simply to watch how outrageously he cheated.

I played golf casually in the late 80s and 90s. Lots of public courses with cheap greens fees back then just outside of Pittsburgh. Messing with another player’s golf ball was well outside the decorum of the game.* Even when playing with some people with very competitive personalities.

* - About the only exception to this I ever saw was someone I was playing with knock a ball over into the rough. This was after people behind us on the tee drove balls into our group without yelling “Fore” or essentially giving us time to get clear.

In comparison I once reached a par 5 in two with a really good fairway shot. Yelled “Fore” in case and then when I got to the green apologized to the group ahead who was still putting out. One of them asked me “Was that in two?”. I said “Yes”. He said “No apology required.”

In a lot of ways, it was. I’m still of the opinion that Trump’s original plan that day was for a sizable group of counter-protestors to show up that he’d direct the MAGAts anger towards and declare that “they” were the ones that he’d talked about when he spoke of the need to “fight” for the country. The violence would have been limited the grounds outside the Capital Building, he’d have felt comfortable calling in the National Guard while Congress was evacuated, and then had plenty of excuse to lock down the building from reentry until it could be “secured.” Thus while it was up in the air if Congress would have time before midnight to finish the count, the effort to get the SCOTUS bench to weigh in would have had time to make an “emergency appeal.”

Jan 6 was a sloppy riot in scale, but it was designed to give cover to at least one disciplined, well-planned, paramilitary attack. That’s obvious in the “stack” of uniformed goons pushing up the steps to the breached doors.

As a lot of folks have commented, it’s not so much about making the ruling go away as it is about preventing James from picking his bones clean and then cracking them for the marrow. All the talk is about how he expects to gain political capital by portraying each seizure and sale as an attack on his campaign, but Tia James is going to go for the low-hanging fruit first which will be his bank accounts and slapping liens on his properties. It could be days or weeks before she actually gets around to slapping locks on anything.

I mean, as I would say as a D&D DM, he can certainly try. (I have to admit, I didn’t have “fining me hundreds of millions of dollars is ILLEGAL ELECTION INTERFERENCE because I need that money to campaign” on my bingo card.) It isn’t going to work, though. He’s not going to be penniless today. He won’t be penniless tomorrow. It’s going to be years, probably, before all appeals are exhausted, all avenues of delay explored, and the final hammer falls on the Trump Criminal Empire. However, today marks the beginning of the end, the slow, inexorable march of justice.

243
Targetpractice  Mar 25, 2024 • 4:27:58am

If anything, I expect that Tia James will probably end up getting all sorts of criticism before the day is over because after weeks of playing up today and the financial ruin that Trump faces, it will likely be mostly paper being pushed for the first few days. We’ll hear reports about banks getting served with paperwork to freeze his assets, others being notified about liens being placed upon his properties, and (perhaps) a few having city workers showing up to assess for value. But there’s not going to be locks slapped on the doors of 40 Wall St or Trump Tower. We’re not going to see Don Poorleone outside, chaining himself to the doors and screaming that they can’t have his property.

Guy came into the lobby without any issue, took time to grab himself some coffee and a cup of instant oatmeal, walked into the vestibule only to realize his card didn’t work…and then knocked on the lobby door and motioned for me to come let him in.

Some people truly have the memory recall of a goldfish.

I’ve done similar when my brain is running on autopilot in the morning. Nagging feeling at the back of my head but I’m out the door and in trouble by the time I realize what I forgot to do or bring. In a hotel I guess not having the key card is probable since it’s not an item that is in my usual morning routine. (Which is why I usually put the key card on top of an item I will definitely grab as a reminder to take it.)

She does realize that cancer patients only lose their hair because of radiotherapy, right? It’s not actually a side effect of cancer? Ugh… Never mind, she’s a Faux News bimbo, of course she doesn’t know.

Even then, radiotherapy isn’t always going to cause hair loss. Some of the chemotherapies can cause hair loss, but not always. Mom avoided doing chemo, and doing just enough radiotherapy to ease pain (and lived with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer for almost 7 years after getting a 6 month prognosis - she was a tough bitch). She did what she wanted, ignoring all the expert advice, and outlived all of the prognosis, despite the constant pain and the cancer hitting her spine and other bones.

Cancer therapy now can involve narrow beam 3d targeting that minimizes exposure to tissues beyond the isolated tumors. Chemotherapies are also specifically targeted to the kinds of cancer involved. Immunotherapies and other measures means you can treat cancer and still have your hair.

These people are lunatics.

re: #234 Nerdy Fish

re: Trump and bankruptcy: It is important to note that this judgment cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. The court will bend over backwards to find ways to help him pay, because overall, that is the point; but similar to Steve Carell in The Office, just yelling, “I declare… BANKRUPTCY!!!” is not a magic bullet that solves all your financial problems. He may well file for bankruptcy, but it’s going to be everybody else who owes him money who is going to be screwed over. The State of New York is going to get their due, in this life or the next.

Not only that, but the spectacle of Trump having to declare bankruptcy is going to be the worst insult of all. Trump has spent years boasting he’s the best businessman ever, and convinced the rubes he knows more than everyone else, and yet he’s had 6 bankruptcies and a string of failed businesses. He’s bankrupted casinos. He’s failed at football. He’s failed airlines, steaks, and vodka.

All of that is secondary to the fact that he’s a criminal who faces nearly $500 million in fines and prison for the rest of his life. But his perceived wealth and identity is inexorably linked to his ego and he is in a death spiral as all of his wealth is questioned and his business empire is nothing but a house of cards where everything is highly/over-leveraged, and he can’t scrape together $500 million in cash or bond to cover his judgment. That’s not something a billionaire would have a problem coming up with unless they were in significant financial difficulty to begin with - and that he can’t secure the bond shows that financial companies recognize that Trump is in real trouble and doesn’t have the assets to cover.

Alternatively - fuck you, I got mine. We’ve already got a Trump legal filing where he’s claimed that he can’t get a financial company (going to 30 of them) to front the $500 million.

They’re not going to lend to a high risk like Trump, where they’re likely to never recoup the outlay.

Speaking of finances, I’ve been working through a bunch of math this morning, preparing for the replacement of our air conditioner and furnace. Based on other advice seen here, I think I am going to let the existing loan (for the roof and siding, which is set to be paid off in a mere 3 months) run its course, and use the saved cash from my annual bonus in conjunction with a smaller new loan to pay for the new projects. With all the high finance completed, all that remains is for this blasted snow to clear outta here so that we can get started with the work.

Trump is holding a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago on April 6. The fine print on the invitation states that the first $6,600 of all donations will go to Trump’s campaign. The next $5,000 will go to the misnamed Save America PAC, which actually is a Save Trump PAC since it pays Trump’s legal bills. Anything over that will go to the RNC. However, donors will also be given an opportunity to also toss some money at the Trump 47 Committee, which also shovels a goodly piece of its money to the Save America PAC.

Awww… Tammy Murphy calls it quits and backs Andy Kim for the general.

The NJ Senate race to replace Menendez has come into sharp focus after Gov Murphy’s wife quits the race. Murphy must have thought all the NJ Democrats and county bosses would just show fealty to Murphy and anoint her as their chosen one.

Turns out that Kim overproduced and showed that he had popular support in a way Murphy didn’t. She would have needed to spend a lot to overcome Kim’s advantages, and that would have been a bruising fight. NJ county bosses have oversized weight in choosing candidates and their ballot positions, and that’s got to change too.

Those fights need to happen to reduce the power of the party bosses here in NJ.

Disc golf is my sport. Whenever I can I leverage Trump’s cheating a golf to make points within our community. I think there is more power to be put on that theme. Over time it resonates. Nobody really likes a cheater.

Pressed on whether she is considering becoming an independent, Murkowski replied, “I’m very independent-minded,” adding, “I just regret that our party is seemingly becoming a party of Donald Trump.”

Murkowski demurred when asked whether she would be open to being an independent who caucuses with Republicans.

“I am navigating my way through some very interesting political times. Let’s just leave it at that,” she said in an interview that aired on CNN Sunday.

The Alaska Republican also reiterated her stance against voting for Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

Mountain lions are highly territorial and usually don’t suffer having any competition in their area. If the animal was found in the same area as the location of the attack, it’s a good bet that it is the same one. the weekend’s doings - only got rained out for part of saturday so we ended up having a mostly productive weekend

urethaned the trough - two coats over two days. no pix. looks the same. just darker

the solar distribution panel is mostly done (story still to come). and we already buried the new feed wire from the barn to the sub panel.

so i started cleaning up the wiring at the sub panel that’s behind the filter at the pond - 40 feet from the barn. in a week or so, i’ll rewire the panel with heavier busses and circuit breakers for each pump. then we can connect the new feed wire and see if we’ve cut the voltage drop.

six months ago our waterfall pump died. couldnt figure out why. ended up having to replace the wire from the subpanel to the waterfall. but i didnt bury it as this was the ‘old’ style probably too thin wire.

yesterday i found the break in the original wire. now there are two feeds to the falls. this might come in handy. instead of running a new beefy wire we can use both of the old feeds, one for pos, one for neg, and double the gauge. a quick test will tell.

recently found out about Chip Drop. today we’re getting our first delivery

“ChipDrop finds local tree companies working in your area and notifies them that you would like some wood chips or logs (or both). The next time their truck is full they can pull up your information through our service and deliver the wood chips straight to your driveway, even if you’re at work”

what a great idea. they dont have to pay to dump the stuff and we get free stuff. win /win.

I despise those prosperity gospel types. The only prosperity they’re interested in is their own and they’ll gleefully fleece their flock to buy that vacation villa in the Seychelles - and, of course, the private jet to get them there.

Trump’s in Criminal Courthouse today on that pretrial hearing regarding the discovery issue Trump claims should end the case in his favor, but which does no such thing. It was a delaying tactic, and DA Bragg is going to argue that the trial is on schedule for April 15 and no further delays are necessary or warranted as Trump fails to state a case or cause of action for such delay, let alone dismissal.

Even someone as inept as him could doubtless close a deal on a few properties in the span of 6 months, enough to get him most of the way there, or even all the way. He was living in denial, because men like him Just Don’t Face Consequences. As someone else said, he misjudged what he was up against - and badly. It all goes back to the one thing we’ve been hammering home since the later hours of 1/6/2021: If he’d just laid low, kept things quiet, none of this would’ve happened. He only started getting in trouble once he started drawing attention to his various misdeeds, compounding the wrongdoing in a spectacular fashion by trying to overthrow the government in order to avoid accountability for all the other stuff. He effectively Streisand Effect-ed himself into losing his real estate empire and his freedom.

Actors at the state level may well consider it worthwhile to do so as part of their ongoing political aspirations. The next person of influence they approach in the future can be reassured that even when things go west and he or she is no longer an asset to them they will be looked after. Getting a rep as a deadbeat (like, say, Donald J. Trump) who will abandon useful idiots immediately after they cease to be of use means making future deals more difficult.

ashtray and tugbar suggest that may well be a ‘54 Precision. As I recall, the ‘54 was the last of those that had the one-piece straight-across pickup, and thus the last that technically needed the cover to help offset some of the extraneous noise the straight pickup tended to accentuate. After that, Leo invented the one-piece where the pickups are staggered into the two rows. No idea why that improved the dampening of extraneous sounds, but hey, it worked!

lawhawk  Mar 25, 2024 • 8:45:11am

I think I posted here a few weeks back that the appellate division could reduce the bond, but all this does is stave off the inevitable. He’s still got to win the case in chief on appeal, and that’s a very hard bar to overcome - Trump’s lacking facts and evidence to support overturning the decisions on appeal.

The bond is a sideshow compared to the verdict.

The appeals court could reduce the final verdict. This doesn’t change the verdict, and the wording of the bond amount reduction was designed to mitigate against business interruptions at this stage. It delays the inevitable.

Last August, notoriously thin-skinned billionaire Elon Musk announced on the Social Media Site Still Known As Twitter To Anyone Who Isn’t A Fascist that he would pay the legal bills of anyone “unfairly treated by [their] employer due to posting or liking something on this platform,” with “no limit.”

This is not because he is any kind of big fan of workers’ rights — in fact, it is the quite the opposite — but rather because he wants to make it more socially acceptable to, say, use racial slurs or get misogynistic or spread harmful conspiracy theories.

Musk announced on Sunday morning that he will be paying the legal bills of one Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill, a Canadian doctor who said a bunch of very stupid things about COVID and the vaccine on Twitter during the pandemic.

TheNewRepublic: Elon Musk Loses Pathetic Defamation Case Against Hate Speech Watchdog

Musk sued the Center for Countering Digital Hate in August, accusing the research group of conducting “a scare campaign to drive away advertisers.” The group had shared research that hate speech had flourished on X (formerly Twitter) after Musk took over in the fall of 2022.

Link to ruling: documentcloud.org

“Sometimes it is unclear what is driving a litigation, and only by reading between the lines of a complaint can one attempt to surmise a plaintiff’s true purpose,” Breyer noted. “Other times, a complaint is so unabashedly and vociferously about one thing that there can be no mistaking that purpose. This case represents the latter circumstance. This case is about punishing the Defendants for their speech.”

NYS judges, so Trump’s not involved at all.

The 2d Department of the Appellate Division covers NYC, so it’s not a conservative bastion in the slightest. They’re appointed by the governor (who in recent years has been Hochul (D), Cuomo (D), etc.).

Why the appellate division ruled this way is impossible to know since they didn’t give a reason. Putting the amount up is designed to insure that frivolous appeals are not undertaken. I know, it’s likely that Trump loses all of his appeals here, but I don’t think he’s going to put forth a frivolous matter (sanctions against the lawyers is a possibility too). He may still end up owing the full amount in disgorgement plus interest. He may be banned from serving on any board in NY. And all the rest of the verdict could get sustained.

This is procedural, and while it would have been fun watching him squirm to pay up the appeal/bond - and it’s been fun watching him admit that he can’t get the money together despite being a self-proclaimed billionaire, he’s still got 10 days to get the lower but still significant amount together.

The federal judiciary is being openly bribed, and there seems to be nothing anyone can do about it.

The federal judiciary now answers to only one person—Leonard Leo and he doesn’t give a fuck about anything else except turning the US into a right wing Opus Dei Theocracy.

He’s got another 10 days to figure that out.

White fucking privilege. No one else gets that many chances, and he has always failed upwards.

And it gives Letitia James’s office 10 more days to to scour through all of Diaper Donnie’s rusty empire to find the gems.

Solid acting by Tom Hardy, BTW. His take on Bane was fantastic.

Donald Trump, billionaire is turning to a group of wealthy fundraisers who have been loyal to him for years to help raise money for his campaign and assist in paying his legal bills

What is with these idiots??

Because their goal is to get him reelected and have a further reduction in their taxes. Totally sensible financial arrangement — if you are the typical billionaire or multi-millionaire with no ethics or morals and a focused desire to increase your bottom-line.

That’s a bit beside the point. Do you think that Donald Trump wouldn’t have gotten favorable treatment if he had been unable to pay bail in his criminal indictments? He’s (ostensibly) rich, (ostensibly) powerful, and a white man. The system is designed to let men like him skate. He’s only in as much trouble as he is because he pushed the boundaries too far, and the powers that be had to make an example of him.

Letitia James

Donald Trump is still facing accountability for his staggering fraud. The court has already found that he engaged in years of fraud to falsely inflate his net worth and unjustly enrich himself, his family, and his organization. The $464 million judgment - plus interest - against Donald Trump and the other defendants still stands,” James said in a statement.

Rando

Maybe this is the best outcome for the dems.
He still has to pay ton of money, which he likely doesn’t have.
The clock keeps running
And he can’t play his victim card now
he still looks bad and looks like he is lying about his wealth.

This is a win, win for Biden.

The Guardian’s header/subhead says it all:

The next Clarence Thomas? Abortion pill case spotlights rightwing judge and his wife’s shadowy connections
Judge James Ho ruled to restrict mifepristone. His wife Allyson is linked to the anti-abortion group that brought the case

When the former president Donald Trump appointed the Texas attorney James Ho to the fifth circuit court of appeals in 2017, lawyers at the prominent law firm Gibson Dunn - where Ho worked before his appointment - had a problem: how to replace the politically connected Ho. Turns out, they didn’t even need to change the home address for his replacement. Ho’s wife, Allyson, moved into her husband’s position and his old office.

re: #473 lawhawk

This is procedural, and while it would have been fun watching him squirm to pay up the appeal/bond - and it’s been fun watching him admit that he can’t get the money together despite being a self-proclaimed billionaire, he’s still got 10 days to get the lower but still significant amount together.

it’s also possible the justices are having a bit of fun with Trump, keeping the amount high enough to where he likely can’t put it up without significantly busting his own balls, but low enough to where he once again has to come up with an excuse for why a billionare can’t come up with an “easy” 200 mill.
