Just saw the giant Monkey Ward building(s) while on an architecture tour of downtown Chicago. Frickin’ MASSIVE.

They were the Amazon of their day. Complete, it seems, with a messianic founder filled with steely determination to strip all basic dignity and humanity from his workers.

Monkey Ward and Sears fucked up SO BAD by passing up the chance to go on-line in the early days of the internet. They could have been the Amazon of today. Instead, they’re both footnotes.
