Pastor of Obama’s Easter Church Receives Racist Threats After Sean Hannity Show

The pastor of the Shiloh Baptist Church (visited by the Obama family on Easter) says he’s received more than 100 threatening phone calls and emails since Sean Hannity’s Monday night show on Fox News: Shiloh Baptist Church receives threats after comments from Sean Hannity.

The Rev. Wallace Charles Smith said the church has received more than 100 threats since Fox News channel’s Sean Hannity aired a tape Monday of a speech Smith gave in January 2010 at Eastern University in Saint Davids, Pa.

“We received a fax that had the image of a monkey with a target across is face,” Smith said. “My secretary has received telephone calls that have been so vulgar until she has had to hang up.” …

On Sunday, Obama and the first family visited the church, founded in the 1860s by former slaves. On Monday, Hannity aired a clip of a speech Smith gave when he served as president of Palmer Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

“It may not be Jim Crow anymore,” Smith says in the videotape. “Now, Jim Crow wears blue pinstripes, goes to law school and carries fancy briefs in cases. And now, Jim Crow has become James Crow, esquire. And he doesn’t have to wear white robes anymore because now he can wear the protective cover of talk radio or can get a regular news program on Fox.”

The reaction from Sean Hannity’s knuckle-dragging audience absolutely verifies Rev. Smith’s point, I’d say.

The President has said in past interviews, as to why his family hasn't settled on a singular church to join and attend, that one of his main concerns is how disruptive his association would be (folks stealing church bulletins, combing through sermon archives, recording sermons in church, harassing partitioners, etc). This episode demonstrates that the Hannitys of this world won't even allow a single holiday attendance to go by without it provoking a guilt-by-association witch-hunt.

I suppose it probably also demonstrates the consequences of any academic records release. Hounding classmates, quote-mining college proffessors' writings, digging through dissertations -- it would be a deep wellspring for a opening up a new front of idiocy.

Looks like O'Reilly went after the Pastor angle as well:

[Link: www.mediaite.com...]
[Link: mediamatters.org...]

O'REILLY: Finally, as you may know, Mr. and Mrs. Obama attended Easter services at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington. Here's the problem: The pastor's a guy named Wallace Smith, who is a race activist. Here's what he said in a speech last year.

SMITH [video clip]: When you look at what's going on, it may not be Jim Crow anymore. Now Jim Crow wears blue pinstripes, goes to law school, and carries fancy briefs and cases. And now Jim Crow has become James Crow, Esquire. And he doesn't have to wear white robes anymore because now he can wear the protective cover of talk radio or can get a regular news program on Fox.

O'REILLY: Wow. Pastor Smith apparently believing the American establishment, including some media outlets like FNC, is racist, designed to keep black Americans down. That's an outrageous charge, unless you can prove it. Pastor Smith cannot prove it. He's bloviating -- stirring up alleged bias for absolutely no reason.

So the question becomes: Why would the president of the United States sit in a church run by a guy named Wallace Smith? I can't answer the question, but I'm offended by the pastor's statement about Fox News. I've been here 15 years; I don't know anybody in this organization who's racist. And if Pastor Smith wants to debate it, he's welcome here anytime. But I predict he will not show up on the Factor because he can't back up his racially charged statements. Again, does the pastor deserve being legitimized by the president of the United States?

---

Monica Crowley joined other conservative criticism of the pastor and Obama, but Crowley took it a step further, labeling Obama’s behavior to be “un-American.” Colmes responded that such a statement was “reprehensible.” O’Reilly didn’t want to go as far as Crowley though, and suggested this was just evidence of Obama displaying bad judgment

Yep. Any church he attends now will be the target of a bunch of zealots looking for anything to be turned into another Jeremiah Wright moment, just like Hannity did here.

I don't remember any other POTUS having his church scrutinized to that level. Ever. Gee, I wonder what the motivation is. ///

This episode demonstrates that the Hannitys of this world won't even allow a single holiday attendance to go by without it provoking a guilt-by-association witch-hunt.

Wait...are you trying to say that this pastor deserves to be called out on nation wide TV for a social comment he made in the past in his church?

What he said is fairly mild, and it is true that Rush, Beck, Savage and others on talk radio do say very racist things. The white robes may be over the top but it certainly hits close to home.

Since when is it OK to go into every church a president attends and scrutinize all their sermons?

It wasn't even said in the church. It wasn't said in a sermon. It was said at a lecture that he was INVITED to give at a conference on RACISM at a university in Pennsylvania. Obama wasn't there. Bush wasn't there. The bloody ghost of Ronald Reagan wasn't there.

So if Obama ever listens to anybody who has ever said a single word about racism, even if he listens to them in some completely different context talking about, say, the Risen Christ, he is demonstrating his own racism.

“The president himself has hoped Republicans would continue to talk about it, thereby damaging their own credibility,” said Republican strategist Karl Rove. “It was a useful diversion.
“But take a look at recent polls,” Rove added. “The problem was the view was taking hold among independents. He got worried it was about to spin out of control.”

The Republican suggested it was cynical of Obama to wait until now to disclose the long-form.

“He had the ability to release it last year and end the issue, but he wanted to play rope-a-dope with Republicans,” Rove said.

“He had the ability to release it last year and end the issue, but he wanted to play rope-a-dope with Republicans,” Rove said.

I think he was playing rerp-a-derp with them.

They had the ability to put a lid on it in 2008, remember?

“He had the ability to release it last year and end the issue, but he wanted to play rope-a-dope with Republicans,” Rove said.

Guess what, Karl? He won. They played right into it perfectly, what with all the birther bills across the country and Trump taking the lead in the GOP polls.

It's not Barack Obama's fault the GOP is filled with a bunch of racist morans who can't accept that a black man is in the White House. Nor is it his fault that they've spent the last three goddamn years making the long-form birth certificate an issue. That's the GOP's fault, for letting it fester and take hold in the party.

You the let the racists and xenophobes take over your party and shit in your bed, and now you have the nerve to complain about the smell? You should have thought of that back in 2008, pal.

The only difference between Obama, Reagan, Clinton, Bush etc... is the obvious. The one thing Fox News, the birthers, the Repub hypocrites et al will not admit. He's black, period. Not white, period. The more journos who come out like Matthews did and just state the obvious, the better. Stop tap dancing around it and make them admit it or deny it, but make them confront it.

President Obama obviously believes in reaching out to all kinds of people. Apparently the Shiloh Baptist Church is considered to be hostile to Israel, but it's not clear to me HOW hostile. I'm a friend of Israel and maybe I wouldn't be welcomed in the church. But I admire Obama for reaching out to many different people. He can have conversations with Benjamin Netanyahu and Jeremiah Wright in the same day. This may not be my personal style, but so what? I still think it's admirable of Obama. What I'm trying to say is, I deplore Sean Hannity's approach, which is only to add to whatever hatred is already there. Yitzhak Rabin said that you don't make peace with friends; you make peace with enemies. There's more than enough hatred to go around. If Obama wants to reach out to the Shiloh Church, THAT'S FINE. It should not be a cause for more hatred, or in Sean Hannity's case, more racist provocations.

Kate is going to get compared to Princess Diana for the next several years, and eventually she's going to find her own Dodi al Fayed. The question is, are we patient enough to wait for that inevitability? Or will we lose interest in time for her to have a normal (as much as possible) life with William?

Bigots don't like being called bigots either. Making them face it isn't the goal, it's making everyone else see it. The right is howling because they know better than anybody that if you say something over and over again people will start to believe it. And they do this about shit that isn't true. They know full well if people who are sick of this stuff get over their fear of being accuses of playing the "race card" and tell truth about what all if this is, it will resonate. Late March of 2000. My Battalion had just done a beach run at Camp Lejeune and we were sitting in the buses waiting to head back to the barracks. We were waiting to leave because one of the senior NCOs had locked his keys in his truck when this song came on:

As a musical amputee, I began singing along at once, exchanging volume and exuberance for musical talent. At the 1:35 mark, my 3 buddies joined in. By the time the crescendo occurred at 2:30 mark, we had the entire busload of around 40 Marines all singing along.

Amos Brown: Well I say again Bill, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton both went to Shiloh Baptist church.

O'Reilly: Yeah, but it was different though. It was different.

Amos Brown: Still it was the same church with the same pastor who has the same views, Bill. It's no different.

O'Reilly: But it was different in the sense that neither Reagan nor Clinton were under fire for not thinking the country was noble. That's what I'm trying to get at.

Translation: He's a black man with a foreign sounding name, therefore he has to be 3X more patriotic than a white guy in order to prove he's worthy.

Hey Bill? Looking for racists at FNC? Try the mirror.

that neither Reagan nor Clinton were under fire for not thinking the country was noble.

This is a fucking completely made up view, based on race.

Really? Really? Obama doesn't love America?

Fucking assholes. Gah, I'm pissed.

It's a chick thing. Even though we in the US don't have the same affinity for aristocracy (aside from celebrities) we still raise girls with the prince charming tales. The regular wedding ceremony is just a princess for a day passion play. To chicks the royal wedding is like watching someone win the Superbowl.

I wanna be princess for a day *__*

You heard it here first, Hannity is the new Beck. (Give it six months and he will be as crazy).

I'm not interested at all, and I do like the Brits in general. Especially their sense of humor. But I finds Will and Kate to be about the most dull couple ever. Celeb weddings in general are also dull. If someone starts doing the Electric Slide, I might be impressed.

You're in luck!! T-Mobile has filmed just such a royal wedding.

Reminds me of the endless Clinton investigations.

Speaking as a woman that was raised in the US, the Royal Wedding has nothing to do with politics. It's those damn Disney movies. Every girl was raised on the theme song "Someday me prince will come." It's a little girl thing and no matter how old we are, we are fond observers. Good night!

Camilla was Charles' true love, even before Diana, but she was not acceptable because she was not *gasp* a virgin.

I was pleased to see that Kate was spared the royal prodding rubber- gloved finger to establish her virginity.

And as long as she produces viable male offspring to continue the dynastic line as Diana did, she will be well loved by the British people.

Hi you...I have beer being chilled.. The NFL draft starts in 10 minutes, There are 3 NBA games on tonight and I'm wondering what sounds good for dinner...
/I'm thinking the snooze button will be well used in the morning
//Do you thing the royal marriage will produce a sex video on the Internet this summer? 3 to 1

I've been in a cooking phase again. This morning, it was Honey bread made in my clay oven (oh man, is that good bread!) Tomorrow, when my Lodge enameled dutch oven gets here, I think I'll break it in with some apple chicken sausage stewed for an afternoon over a bed of sauerkraut, with some new potatoes thrown in, just to make sure I'm not missing a carbohydrate anywhere. Then tonight, it's homemade ice-cream, courtesy of the Kitchenaid ice-cream maker attachment!
