It's the optics, not the outcome.
Get to the same point (tax rates) but by opposite means. One is the result of the reset and then a deal to cut the rates. The other would have been to allow certain rates to lapse but keep others.
The President understood this, and it works to his benefit too. He gets the hike he wants on the rich, and now gets the GOP to have to defend why the top tax bracket deserves a break, and now the GOP has to explain why everyone should get a tax cut but one that is conditioned on the top bracket getting its cut.

It had its ups and downs.
The ups included finishing grad school and getting a new job. I like what I do and who I work with and things are starting to come together in a way that makes sense to me. I've got an opportunity in the planning stages right now that would be huge if I land it. And the CES thing is flattering. I didn't expect them to go with it when I suggested that someone should go, but they agreed and I'm one of the two people being sent.
The downs, OTOH, included looking for that new job and all the anxiety about money that goes with it. It took me months of searching, including having to move three times in five months -- first at the end of July because my lease ran out and I needed a place to live while I found a job, then to a temporary place in October when I started my job, then three weeks ago when I found a permanent address. I also have to figure out money and how to pay back the student loans and bills that piled up this past year. Oy.
Overall, though, not a bad year. I think 2013 is going to be great year.

Might have been a smart political move for Obama to say a deal is "within sight", even if that's not totally true. Makes the House GOP look even more obstructionist, as they've been the main impediment to compromise all along.
Not surprising that Boehner can't (or won't) hold a vote. If Plan B failed (at 1 million), why would House Repubs go along with a deal at 400-450k?
Next question is whether House GOP is so extreme it will vote against tax cuts for 98% of Americans since the 2% of Americans they really care about won't be getting a cut.

The lead guitarist and bass player are both friends of mine from playing in the live karaoke band I play with in NYC - the guitarist has been with the ROA road show for three years, and the bass player did both the Broadway run and road show of 'American Idiot.' Vegas has assembled a kickass band for that show - I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

Not going out and just finished up dinner. Pan-seared salmon with sesame crust, and a quinona pilaf with pine nuts and basil. Both came out edible and tasty, but not spectacular.
Will probably have a glass or two of wine during the evening.
