So, my turn to be CL’d. From downstairs:

A non-political interlude and a less destructive natural phenomenon — at least if people don’t go crazy:

One minute before totality:

Same shot at totality:

Totality 1 (although wheat-dogg’s is infinitely better):

Totality 2:

Totality almost over:

Same shot, just after totality:

To distract us from all this bad news, I give you Luna Lee, playing the Game of Thrones theme on the Korean gayageum.

Also, she says she will be playing at the Korean Festival in Maryland Sept. 16.

Yes, but hurricanes have their own freaky personalities. Katrina, technically, shouldn’t have had a thirty-foot storm surge. But it did, and it totally destroyed the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

re: #49 whitebeach

Katrina had the time as a Cat 5 to build up the storm surge to bring with it. Those lag behind the intensity fluctuations, because it takes time for the wind to pile up that much water - and time for the piled up water to dissipate if the wind isn’t there to support it. When Katrina weakened shortly before landfall, that took down the winds but there wasn’t enough time for the storm surge to respond in kind.

Likewise, it’s very possible that the rapid intensification of Harvey has prevented the storm surge from building to the levels that would otherwise have been expected for a Cat 4 storm. My guess is a lot of the damage we’ve been seeing is wind-related, not from the surge.

And of course, the big hazard is really yet to come, in terms of the stall and flooding that’s going to happen in the days ahead.

Yes, but I’m not sure even the NHS has figured out why Katrina hit like it did. And of course at New Orleans she was a weak cat 2 at most. The disaster there had other causes.

And certainly you’re right that, if the predictions are anywhere close to correct, the greatest harm and destruction in the next few days will be from rainfall flooding.

I know about colonias because I used to patrol the California version when I was a deputy sheriff. It was like stepping into a South African township or a Brazilian favela. Most law enforcement agencies ignore them but our sheriff insisted that we do what we could. There were few telephones then so even reporting a crime, let alone a dangerous situation, was a challenge.

73
Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines  Aug 25, 2017 • 10:00:27pm

Cheap cell phones have made life safer in the colonias, though it may take a while to get a response. This includes the much disparaged “Obama phones,” (which should probably be called “Reagan phones” since the program originated while he was in office.)

Thanks. I will certainly read it. I remember Camille clearly, because I knew and loved the coast, although I was in San Francisco when she hit. I was working for a temp labor agency and a gang of us were sent to the railyards to load seven boxcars of stuff for the Red Cross for hurricane survivors on the Gulf Coast (San Francisco then and I hope now was a great city for relieving disaster victims elsewhere).

At the end of a long day, our Red Cross supervisor had us load the trunk of his car with what must have been five hundred pounds of canned food intended for hurricane victims—I mean, the car springs were bottomed out. Then he drove away. Since that time I have never given a dime to the Red Cross, right or wrong.

Full disclosure: I stole something too. It was a pure silk hand-painted tie, a pale orchid on a green background. I knew that, unlike the case of several hundred pounds of canned food, nobody whatsoever in the Camille zone needed that tie. I still have it to this day.

As for the Red Cross, I’m sorry to hear that you ran across someone who’s a bad apple. I’m moderately sure that the left image in the damage pictures of Ocean Springs Front Beach is what remained of the apartment complex (two stories, approx. 100 units) where two of my friends lived. They had gone inland, fortunately. There was nothing left of that large U-shaped complex except the slabs and the swimming pool, in which a car rested.

In that scenario, Hatch would simply be a caretaker POTUS until 2020. Then we’d have an open field for candidates; I doubt very highly that he’d make grab for the brass ring himself.

Maugham’s mother, Edith Mary (née Snell), had tuberculosis (TB), a condition for which her physician prescribed childbirth.[6] She had Maugham several years after the last of his three elder brothers was born. His brothers were away at boarding school by the time Maugham was three.

The life of a child used as medical treatment.

hmmm …

Edith’s sixth and final son died on 25 January 1882, one day after his birth, on Maugham’s eighth birthday. Edith died of tuberculosis six days later on 31 January at the age of 41.[7] The early death of his mother left Maugham traumatized. He kept his mother’s photograph at his bedside for the rest of his life.[8] Two years after Edith’s death Maugham’s father died in France of cancer.

W. Somerset was born 1874. Six Pregnancies while suffering from the end stages of TB. Chances are she did feel better during the pregnancy, that is not uncommon. I don’t think pregnancy cured her or extended her life. I hope it is what she wanted to do and she wasn’t coerced into it.

Hello from Brookings, OR! I thought I would toss out the latest Chetco Bar Fire stats:

- Area consumed by fire: 104,144 acres (up 1,800 acres from yesterday)
- Number of firefighters: 1,612 (up 214 from yesterday)
- Number of people evacuated from fire area: 4,000+
- Number of homes threatened in evacuated area: 1,700+
- Number of homes confirmed destroyed by fire so far: 6
- Number of structures damaged by fire: 30+

Today was forecast to hit 80 degrees here in town but we were lucky and only hit 64. While it remained clear last night a thin marine layer formed in the early AM and held all day until clearing for a short time just after sunset (humidity had dropped to 82% by then). About an hour after sunset a thin marine layer reformed over the area and humidity is back up to 100%, hopefully some fog will follow (not forecast). Winds here today were calm or very light and from the S/SW. While everything has been holding here (weather wise for firefighting) and the forecast Chetco Effect winds did not materialize today, the next 24 hours are going to be critical.

The NWS has changed our forecast to a Red Flag warning and extended the Chetco Effect wind warning until 9PM Saturday night. This might be extended into Sunday due to changing conditions (area temperatures rising over the weekend). I have been monitoring winds in Gold Beach (earlier tonight from NE up to 16 MPH, bad - now W @7 MPH (better), Cave Junction - (earlier tonight from NE @ 12 w/ gusts to 18 MPH, bad - now N/NE @ 7 w/ gusts to 11 (not as bad). Right now our winds are calm here at home and N/NE @ 1 w/ gusts to 2 MPH at the airport at the north end of town. While there is some wind from the NE, it’s not a Chetco Effect wind (warm and 25+ MPH). The weather yesterday and today allowed for aerial water and retardant drops along the lines in preparation for the forecast winds this weekend. Bulldozers are widening lines and tanker trucks are soaking things down for the same reason.

One of the guys who works at the mill said that he is hearing that the lumber company was the one who really put out the Biscuit Fire in 2002, which is bunk. While they helped to contain it, along with many others, Mother Nature put that fire out when the rainy season hit. It was finally declared out on 12/31/2002. Not only that, but the 2002 fire started in an area that had been “salvage logged” in 1987 and left covered in waste that became fuel. I am willing to bet that the 2017 Chetco Bar Fire started in a similar location that was “salvage logged” in 2002. Personally, I think this is the lumber company trying to make some positive press for their industry in a bad situation. I have no problem with salvage logging but not if it leads to fires in our area every 15 years…lol!

Regarding Arpaio, I hope he is asked if in accepting the pardon that he is admitting guilt. I already know the answer but I want to hear the disrespect for the laws of our country coming right from the horse’s ass just so everyone else can do so too.

Note how both the wikipedia article and the Texas SoS office demurely tell us that most colonia dwellings “are built by their owners with available materials” and the units are expanded over time “as materials become available,” that is, the dwellings are shacks and the places are shantytowns.

Only seconds - and meters - away from what might have been the worst disaster in aviation history - worse than the 1977 Tenerife Airport Disaster.

I remember the Tenerife crash very well. My wife met me at the door as I got in from class and said, “There’s been a plane crash, a bad one. Real bad.” I asked where. She said, “Spain, I think.” I got the TV turned on in time to catch Walter Cronkite and the appalling details.
I also remember discussing it with my wife later that night. “That’s why I don’t like you flying” (something I was still doing with the NY National Guard). No amount of logic or statistics would deflect her from that. It was one of the reasons she gave for leaving me a few months later, though a minor one. Now, 40 years later, her replacement husband is dead and I am still here. How about that?

The Tenerife Disaster made quite an impression on me, though I was very young at the time (I was seven at the time). It was easily the biggest news story of the day. I asked my dad (a former WWII USN pilot) how that could happen and he told me that take-off and landing are the most dangerous times in flying; if something’s gonna go horribly wrong, that’s usually when it happens.

Take off and landing…

After I got out of the Active Army, I visited a friend living in Tokyo. I got to listen to Challenger blow up on AFN radio one night. Then later I took a two week side trip to Thailand and flew there on Egypt Air. Cheap but no booze, not even for us heathens. The flight back though… A nice new 757 and we’re coming into Narita airport over Tokyo Bay, coming in like a nearly perfect landing except we’re like 5 km short of the runway. The crew noticed before they gave the landing gear a bath and if you knew you could feel the power come back up, the aircraft attitude change as the stopped the decent and staggered the plane to the runway. I was really ready for a beer after that flight!

158
VegasGolfer  Aug 26, 2017 • 3:02:20am

I’m pretty sure the investigation is not complete on the Air Canada incident, but I’m pretty sure that ATC will have a lower level of responsibility than the pilots, and that is a shame. I did that job for 26 yrs, and you gain a sort of sixth sense of where all aircraft should be under your control at all times even though you are not looking directly at a certain specific aircraft. The controller should have been aware of where Air Canada was and verified his position with the radar display, which wouldve showed the pilot was lined up on the taxiway. Plus, if SFO is like any other major airport, there is another controller next to the controller in charge of the runway who monitors all communications.
We always used to get trained on how to plug the hole, how when all factors line up to create a potential conflict, we use redundancy and training to fix and prevent that situation. And we would take pride in doing that every day. I hope that the controller involved takes this incident very seriously and uses it to make himself a better controller in the future. If not, that would be the most disappointing outcome for me in this incident.
On the pilots end (and I am not a pilot, so I am not an expert), they also have redundancy for the approach they were on, and it appears they did not follow it. Maybe there are people on here that could give a perspective on how a commercial pilot would fly a similar approach in that incident.

re: #142 Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines

Perfectly illustrates the contrast between conservative and liberal values. Rich was allegedly a scammer and a tax cheat, someone who abused money and property. Arpaio abused people in all kinds of horrible ways. No wonder the cons are horrified by the Rich pardon.

The Rich pardon also had bipartisan criticism too. Only McCain has criticized this so far from what I’ve seen. Wilson has defended it. Agree with Ski, we can’t forget the Never Trumpers are assholes independently of Trump.

A beer?

More like a few shots of scotch.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump’s already up and roaring on Twitter. He’s wishing Brock Long luck as Harvey slams the Gulf Coast and is still a category 1 storm hours after making landfall.

That’s right - he’s more concerned about how his admin will appear to be doing their jobs than caring about what happens to Texans.

They’re going to see catastrophic flooding because the rains will persist through the entire weekend (and perhaps longer).

There’s a reason that the spaghetti models aren’t in agreement about the storm’s track from here going a few days out. The storm is essentially stalling out over Texas and will stick around; there aren’t steering winds to push it away. Once scenario is that it kicks back out over the Gulf in a couple of days, where it could then make another landfall elsewhere up the coast.

A saving grace is that Harvey intensified so quickly and so close to shore that the truly devastating storm surge didn’t have time to form (you need a fetch to generate the truly dangerous surge).

Tomorrow is not looking too good for the south Oregon coast. Most of the west coast is heating up over the next few days, including Grants Pass and Medford, OR. Earlier yesterday the low for tonight was forecast as 56 and was later changed to a low of 62, not good. A couple of hours ago it was again revised to a low of 64 for tonight and Saturday’s high was changed from 70 to 81, really not good! Winds are forecast to be from the NE at 6 MPH in the AM (really not good) and later changing to light and variable (a bit better). Current winds here are E @ 1 w/ gusts to 2 (airport reading). Winds in Gold Beach to the north are from the west at 5 MPH. Winds in the valley were initially N/NE up to 18 MPH last night but they tapered off and it’s been calm for the last few hours. Humidity at Cave Junction to the east of us is 71%, recovering from a low of 28% yesterday. Grants Pass and Medford are similar so hopefully that inland indication combined with our own humidity here on the coast means good humidity recovery in the the area of the fire.

The good news is that we’re still at 100% humidity here in town, everything is covered in condensation, the thin marine layer is still in place (and extends out over the ocean for about 60 miles) and the temp is 53, not 64. Although the inland heating worries me, one hope I have is that the cool marine layer over us meets up with warm air inland in the AM and we end up fogged in solid for the day. We were socked in solid fog during the last big inland heat wave earlier this summer, as is typical for our area. If that happens, air movement along the coast is pretty much dead for the day.

Here’s hoping things are as usual for the area! If not, it’s going to be a tense day for everyone.

Morning!

So it appears there was some DC activity after I logged off late yesterday afternoon.

No more Seb Gorka…another bozo out the door. I note it was done to him after Trump was most likely already in Maryland at Camp David.

Seems like Trump always dumps someone from a bit of distance. Mr. tough guy, eh?

I guess he can only do the “you’re fired” thing on a reality TV show.

And many Americans voted for that guy. The guy that in reality is a chicken shit.

And then he did what everyone thought he would do…pardon Sheriff Joe. Way to show everyone in America you are the law and order President.

More activity of an asshole. Our President is an asshole.

As bad as things are here, my heart goes out to those in the path of Harvey and who will be dealing with the aftermath in the days ahead. The one advantage we have here with our disaster is that we can try to stop the fire and limit the damage. We might not be able to do it but we sure as hell can try. There’s no stopping a hurricane and flooding, all you can do is either hunker down and hope for the best or get out of the way. Then after the puzzle of life that you have assembled has been scattered in the winds and floods, you get to try and put it all back together again.

While missing pieces.

Good morning from Corpus Christi! We survived the night relatively intact. Still no power here at the senior living community, but the husband was able to make it to the house and we have power!!! We lost 2 fences but that wasn’t really a surprise. 2 trees down in neighbors’ yards but both missed hitting houses. Roof seems to be intact but the next 48 hours may test that.

Friends who live in Rockport fear their house is gone. The live a block from the school that collapsed so they are bracing for the worst possible news on that front. Bad thing is they evacuated to New Braunfels which is now being lashed by Harvey, so they are stuck there. Maybe that’s better as the news will have time to sink in.

I’m off to deliver cinnamon rolls, fruit and bottled water to our residents, just wanted to check in and give y’all an update.

So glad I got my roof done 10 days ago! Great timing, huh? Keeping us all cozy and dry thus far in the 2017 hurricane from hell.

After a couple of days of watching and indecision of whether to stay home or pack up the kids and go to a friend’s home for possibly 5 or more days, I got good trust-worthy info, i.e. not the Weather channel, and decided to stay. (Though Blossom the cockatoo is visiting elsewhere in case conditions required us to move quickly.) We have, of course, had some heavy rains here in SW Houston and a few pretty good wind gusts but nothing dangerous. We actually got a good night’s sleep until my phone weather alert thing went off at 5:45ish warning of possible flash flooding. Yeah, duh.

Now we wait to see what Harvey does next.

It was on Facebook this week that a cousin notified the world that she has been disinherited. I posted a sympathetic comment, hoping all will be well. But a subsequent post of hers made me realize what might have been the cause: her Hillary for Prison 2016 poster. Haven’t seen her in years but am friends with her mother, who, like me, is a staunch Hillary supporter. I can’t stand him any longer, but if he can help hold off the damage Trump is creating and maybe even hasten getting him out of DC, then I’ll give him an attaboy.

But in so many ways he started this bullshit with Little Ms. Palin. It opened the door for the no-nothings that seem to be in so many political positions.

You know, if McCain really has no more fucks to give, he could get up and apologize to this country that he had Palin on his ticket and say it was the worse mistake and why. Maybe he could split the Tea Partiers (Freedom Caucus) from the Republicans forever and drive them into Independence where they can wither away.

That might win me over a bit. Might.

Perfectly illustrates the contrast between conservative and liberal values. Rich was allegedly a scammer and a tax cheat, someone who abused money and property. Arpaio abused people in all kinds of horrible ways. No wonder the cons are horrified by the Rich pardon.

Arpaio was endorsed by a Presidential candidate last year… but not the one who won.

That is Katie, a rescue that was shuttled from Tulsa to Mrs J’s shelter, we took her in. She has some issues with trust, very shy still after four years with us. Anyway, three or four days after we brought her home she skittered out a door I was holding open to let in a cat. She was loose for several months, never could get close to catch her but she stuck close around. She bedded down at night under a neighbor’s porch and would come down to ours for food. That’s me trying to lure her with treats.

Czechs have a tendency to be fairly Islamophobic. One time, I was chatting with some students and pointed out to them that groups like ISIS are, when all is said and done, nothing more than right-wing extremist terrorists when seen in their own cultural context.

They have their own distorted vision of Islam, much as some right-wing extremists in the USA have “Christian Identity”.

Some of my Cornell classmates did not believe me when I told them there were actual shantytowns in the California desert.
“You mean like cardboard shacks. The Grapes of Wrath?”
“Cardboard shacks, Grapes of Wrath, yes”
“No running water or sewer service?”
“No water or sewer.”
“God help us. How is that possible in this day and age?”
This was 35 years ago. Most of the California colonias are gone but they abound in Texas.

Thanks for making me look. I live in a colonia. Everydamnthing with a name in my county is a colonia. I thought it was just certain neighborhoods. You know, the historic district. Although I should have known. The part of town I live in was not within the original boundaries, so we call it ‘the Prehistoric District’. I roll downhill to work in the Historic District.

*Blink*
NASA Just Ordered 53 Nikon D5 DSLRs

NASA just placed a hefty order for 53 unmodified Nikon D5 DSLRs. The cameras currently cost about $6,500 each, so if NASA paid full retail price for each camera, they just spent at least $344,500 on this purchase.

NASA’s 2017 budget is $19.5 billion, so the agency just dropped about 1/56,604th of that on these cameras.

Nikon says that the D5 cameras will be delivered to the space agency without any special hardware modifications — they’ll be exactly like the camera found in camera stores. NASA previously purchased a batch of unmodified D3S DSLRs from Nikon in 2009.

NASA’s choice of camera “confirm[s] the incredible reliability of Nikon products, as well as their ability to withstand even the harshest of environments,” Nikon writes.

My Nikon buddies are not going to let this Canon guy live this down anytime soon. ;-)

Today is the big fight day.

If you’re going to bet, the problem is making money on a Mayweather victory.

However, the bet for under 4.99 million buys (yes, there is betting on the size of the PPV) is probably a decent one.

Boxing* is primeval, and prime evil. It will go away faster than football because there is less money involved, but not fast enough, because it’s still a lot of money.

*edited, because today’s event may not qualify as ‘boxing’. I don’t know.

Boxing has been dying for many years. One reason this gimmick fight is so big is because Mayweather is one of the last few mega-stars in the field, and he’s over 40 now.

MMA has pretty much replaced boxing in popularity among the youngsters.

I edited, but perhaps not for clarity. Hits to the head on purpose are evil.

Ugh. Logged on to Facebook just now and already have two “friends” of mine saying that pardoning Shurff Joe was, and I quote, “the right thing to do.” I would like to figure out where my Christian “friends” get their sense of morality, because it certainly isn’t from the Bible. And now I want to go crawl in a hole right now and deny I know any of them. How are things among the lizardfolk on this cool rainy Saturday?

Regarding tonight’s bout, I know McGregor is an MMA champ, but IMO, he’s at something of a disadvantage. This is straight-up boxing - he can’t use his MMA skills to their fullest and he’s going up against an undefeated professional boxer, and a damned good one at that.

Who’s screwy idea was this anyway?

McGregor’s.

He likes notoriety. He’s guaranteed $3 million minimum, but that is small compared to Mayweather’s minimum. For McGregor it’s mostly about setting up the fight of the century.

Ah……..publicity.

I’d read elsewhere that Mayweather gets a cool $100 million out of this; if he loses, yeah, he’ll be crying all the way to the bank after stopping off at the Bentley dealership and booking a month-long vacation in the Maldives or something.

Mayweather was basically done with his career. He probably agreed to this as his massive payday gives him one last hurrah, though boxing purists will sneer at his victory.

If they tell me I get a $3 million minimum to get hit…well, I’m a scrawny weak person…I won’t be standing for much of a beating, but $3 million would be like $1 million per hit.

I’m cool with that.

LOL years ago, a friend said to me, “Yeah, I’d step in the ring with Mike Tyson for a million bucks” to which I replied, “You’ll be spending that one million on facial reconstruction surgery after Tyson lands his first punch.”

NASA Just Ordered 53 Nikon D5 DSLRs

My Nikon buddies are not going to let this Canon guy live this down anytime soon. ;-)

Backwards compatibility I’d guess or else they’d buy something better like the Hasselblad X1D. Or really any mirrorless, they’re pretty much all superior to DSLRs now.

Younger days I did a lot of various martial arts. 15 solid years scattered after then. Sparring and fights were a big part of the training, the adrenaline rush and occasional medical breaks from training. I hurt people a couple times and I regret it. Doing all that for spectacle and fame and of course the MONEY, most of which goes places other then the fighters… Is not for me. Against the rules they taught us. I won’t pay or try to see it through.
I do have a guilty technical interest. Tough for a mixed style guy to prevail against a champion specialist. Two styles really own the “hands” aspect of a fight imho. Boxing and Wing Chun. Boxing gloves take away some of the tools in martial styles.

Just ask your friends how Joe’s Concentration Camp (his description - phoenixnewtimes.com) can be squared with Matthew 25:31-46.

Or ask if you can tell them about the good news since it’s obvious they’ve never heard of Jesus… < whistles innocently >

It’s cool how WH stays open (and It’s good to know I can still get my hashbrowns scatters, peppered and capped after a major storm), but they whole reason they can is that any given WH restaurant is a relatively simple operation. You only need about 5 people to operate and the food is simple to prepare. Most retail stores are more complicated.

I’ll stick to HEMA (historical european martial arts) for my martial arts exercise these days. A waster & a buckler are easier on my fat old body ;) while getting me moving and exercising.
