Laid down odd and even but double zero played

So I understand that the last two nights of debates have been an utter shitshow, which really should surprise nobody who heard that CNN was treating the choosing of who would appear on which night like the damned NFL draft.

Next time, we’ll have the Democratic hopefuls in a special edition of “The Surreal Life.”

And the debate after that will be in the format of a tribal council from Survivor.

Eventually we’ll just get it down to a fight in the Thunderdome.

Aspiring Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe Does Not Want DOJ’s Mob Experts Exchanging Information with Mob Experts (goes to emptywheel, more at the link):

Last night, President Trump announced that Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats is resigning, effective August 15, and will be replaced by Congressman John Ratcliffe, who is totally unqualified for the job, but who said mean things to Robert Mueller the other day, which makes him the perfect Trump pick.

There will be many controversial steps in installing Ratcliffe (not least that Sue Gordon, currently the Principal Deputy, should take over as Acting DNI when Coats leaves, but Trump seems to have a plan to ignore the law that mandates that).

But I also think Ratcliffe’s confirmation process will be troubled, and not just because he’s totally unqualified for the job. Because he has been one of the key players into the Republican investigation into the Trump investigation, there are a bunch of transcripts of him acting really stupid in depositions, even more stupid than he acted in public in the Mueller hearing. As I noted in this post, in Michael Cohen’s second interview with HPSCI, for example, Ratcliffe got his ass handed to him by Cooley Law graduate Cohen.

VANQUISH THEM, KAMALA. Your 27th-Night-In-A-Row Democratic Debate Liveblog! (Wonkette with minute-by-minute snark on the debate I was spared from watching by not owning a television set)

From near the opening:

7:59: Oh my God the CNN pre-show people are so stupid. “Tulsi Gabbard is one to watch! She’s so anti-war!” NO SHE’S NOT, IDIOTS, READ A BOOK.

We have invented a new motto for the CNN pre-show people, and it is “Betcha Don’t Think Chris Cillizza Is That Stupid Anymore, At Least Compared To These Idiots!” It is a good motto.

Anyway, the opening ceremonies have started, and if last night is any indication, we’ll get opening statements in about 45 minutes once CNN is done jerking itself off.

That won’t save Greenwald. If Bolsonaro had him dragged in tomorrow, Trump would have no idea who he is, nor would he care.

Greenwald is an idiot (tautology) if he stays in Brazil, since he has the means to leave.

It strikes me that the candidates are lining up into three camps, aiming at three bases:

1) the anarchist/revolutionary/burn-it-down (Tulsi, Bernie,…);
2) the traditionalists (Biden, ….);
3) the triangulators (Harris, Booker, Pete, ….).

I’m hoping camp 3 wins.

But the reason why they have to take shots at each other is simply because this is a contest. If all they ever do is rightly critique Trump there is no way to differentiate between them.

Reagan’s Legacy has nothing to do with what he accomplished or failed to do. It is simply a reverse projection, a rose-tinted look back at memories of Morning in America that modern Conservatives hold up in their minds as some sort of ideal.

The cages for kids were built by the Obama Administration in 2014. He had the policy of child separation. I ended it even as I realized that more families would then come to the Border!

So Obama forced your administration to treat people that way, especially helpless children.

items from this AM’s electoral-vote.com re racism in the news
(yep, we’re normalizing it)

Quinnipiac just released a poll in which 51% of respondents agreed with the statement that Trump is a racist. That’s considerably higher than the 41% of Americans in 1968 who felt that George Wallace was a racist. …George Wallace …who stood in the door of the the University of Alabama and announced “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”

This does not mean that Trump actually is more racist than Wallace, of course. Standards were different in 1968… It does mean, however, that Trump is more out of step with his time, on this issue, than Wallace was in his.

and re the vile comments on the nixon / reagan tape:

The lesson is this: Any candidate willing to do some dog whistling is almost certainly revealing something about their own personal mindset. And if a candidate is willing to go far beyond dog whistling, well, you can reach your own conclusions about their mindset

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area no longer under severe storm or sweltering temp alerts. The debate format sucked something fierce, and CNN went all in trying to get every candidate to savage the others, even though the differences in policies are for the most part slight and distinctions in approach and tone.

When one candidate wouldn’t rise to the bait, the moderators would cut them off and try someone else to jump in and bump ugly with the other candidates.

It’s by design, because the debate isn’t about getting exposure on policies and prescriptions, but about getting those soundbites that CNN can sell and package.

The thing is that there’s only one true enemy of the nation here, and it’s Trump. He’s able to sit back and spew his racist claptrap and elevate right wing extremists and conspiracy nuts on Twitter (until Twitter realizes those accounts are TOS violations). Twitter keeps Trump around because he’s a revenue generator, pure and simple. He’s a walking TOS violation, not that Twitter cares. It’s the eyeballs that matter.

So, while CNN was hoping Biden and Kamala could duke it out, or that one of the others would savage the other leading candidates on stage, Trump lies nonstop and continues to fund disinformation campaigns (primarily targeting Facebook) and relies on McConnell blocking election security efforts because the GOP knows the only way to remain in power is to deprive minorities the right to vote and to enable foreign powers to undermine election integrity.

re: #54 Belafon

What do we know about the MLK story.

My google-fu is insufficient to dig up the original, but…

a journalist within the last year published a story in which he claimed to have seen an FBI document (which he could not produce) that had scribbled in the margin (scribbled by he wasn’t sure who) that whoever had access to this document to scribble on it claimed to have heard of a wiretap that had MLK in the room commenting while somebody else committed a rape.

Reasons to doubt the story:

1) the FBI was extremely eager to discredit MLK; if they’d had any such tape it would have been released.

2) whatever unknown person scribbled in the margins of the document could have been talking about a rumor he half-overheard, he could have been making it up to please his boss, he could have been decades later defacing archival materials just to troll.

In short — until and unless a tape is released, or a woman comes forward to speak, there’s no reason to think the story has any credibility.

(the part of the story about MLK cheating on his wife — that part’s definitely true, well-documented, but Coretta probably knew and never made any public comment about it)

NOT SO. Mueller reported that he could not prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Trump committed criminal conspiracy. There was evidence of collusion, just not “beyond a reasonable doubt” evidence. Because the extensive obstruction of justice prevented him from getting all the evidence that may exist. There’s lots of people he wanted to interview and didn’t get to.

Russian actor Smolev jailed for drunk policeman comic video

Dmitry Smolev was found guilty of bringing Russian police into disrepute and illegally wearing a police uniform.

He has been performing a major role in the current production of Dyuma at the Sovremennik Theatre.

In the 12-second clip Smolev wobbles and smokes a cigarette. A blogger posted it on the social network TikTok.

In a Russian TV interview, Smolev said the blogger had asked him to perform in the clip as a favour, and had given him the police uniform for the part. Smolev said he did not know where the clip was to appear.

Sovremennik Theatre has issued a statement, saying it “understands that ignorance of the law (which is indeed the case concerning Dmitry Smolev) does not relieve someone of responsibility”.

This is all about intimidation, the theater is shitting bricks that it will be shut down.

while there has to be some attempt to draw distinctions between yourself and the others…

there should be one drumbeat continuous Dem unifying message: trump is everybody’s problem. they can do it two ways

- hitting him directly as an answer to a question
- contrasting indirectly by explaining achievable policy proposals, why they will work, and how they benefit everybody

its easy during their individual campaign schedules

WW1, WW2, and the Great Depression forced white Americans to care quite a lot about how government worked, and what it did. Since a whole lot of people need a clue x 4 in order to understand, and we haven’t had a big one since then, too many start thinking it’s just about them.

Lol you think he plays golf on taxpayers dime? He doesn’t even take s paycheck.

trump does in fact ‘take a paycheck’

whether you ‘donate your paycheck’ or deposit it then write a check to a charity, what’s the difference? it’s money, it’s fungible, as the R’s keep telling us

trump is donating the amount of his ‘net’ after taxes check - appx $78k per quarter, not the gross. it’s not nothing, but it’s only 78% of his salary.

- he will (or should) be reporting the entire 400k on his 1040
- and likely taking whatever charitable deduction the law allows
- though there may be a question if he ‘donates’ his money to government programs, as he has, whether they qualify as tax deductible charitable contributions

ps - over 8 years, obama contributed 1.2 million to charity - about 50% more than his salary

It was the same with Ticketmaster and their scam fee settlement. They offered discounted tickets for concerts, but the demand was such that most folks never got to recover for the damages.

Have you been watching Snowfall? The show seems to take the position that marginal CIA employees/freelancers, took it upon themselves to do the coke part of the story, on their own initiative and with HQ not wanting to know. “If you’re caught we will disavow” sort of thing.

Well I knew Gary Webb and he was a friend of mine. Never will forgive the liars at the New York Times, Washington Post and Lies Angeles Times joining forces to destroy him, blacklist him and drive him to suicide because he uncovered the truth.

Same here. Between the credit monitoring we have, the banks we have our credit cards through as well as personal finances, and my wife’s steadfast monitoring of these things herself nothing will get through unnoticed. So we went for the money. We’ll see what we get.

Too bad, so sad: Roger Stone loses bid to dismiss the indictments against him

The key grafs of the full opinion:

While the Court will require the government to provide the defendant with the bulk of the material redacted from the Report of the Special Counsel that relates to him, it concludes that the defense has not identified any legal grounds that would support dismissing or enjoining this action or authorizing discovery into the prosecutors’ internal deliberations. Indeed, the defendant acknowledged at oral argument that many of his theories for why the indictment is invalid are foreclosed by Supreme Court and D.C. Circuit precedent that this Court is required to follow. Thus, with the limited exception of the motion to compel the production of
the Report of the Special Counsel, which will be granted in part, the motions will be denied.

People wind up in urgent care getting expensive operations that could have been avoided with some treatment or medications that might cost a few hundred dollars.

Instead they get operations that cost thousands.

Those costs are passed on to the already insured.

So why not help pay for them to get the basic care they need so that EVERYBODY SAVES MONEY?

This is too much complex math for them to understand, they just cannot stand the thought of “giving it away” when in fact our Emergency Care Act requires just that

Considering we pay for medical care for undocumented immigrants via higher insurance rates, we will want to consider it as part of the plan. But, if we don’t, a comprehensive health system for the rest of us will make it cheaper for them, as long as we make negotiated prices available to people outside of a plan.

You mean like lettuce pickers, or the guys who bag it up at the wholesalers? If they had something contagious, that’s why all the recalls.

Or the guy who works at that restaurant you like. Or some guy on the bus. If he’s got something contagious, if he goes untreated it’s not just him who’ll suffer the consequences.

I don’t have any major health issues.

BUT I do:

- Have mild asthma (that I need an inhaler for, though I don’t necessarily need to use it every day).

- Have ADD which I sometimes treat and sometimes don’t.

- Have a heart murmur I was born with that that is for all intents and purposes harmless so long as I take care of myself (which I do)

One or more of these issues could easily disqualify me from an individual insurance plan despite the fact I am a relatively healthy person.

Way back in the 1980’s when I was young and strapping, I had a “basic” health care policy with a $5,000 deductible for $50 per month.

It was not health insurance so much as bankruptcy insurance in the event I got hit by a truck

Even as a family assigned to a US base in Italy, we were eligible to join their healthcare system for the then cost of USD 700 per year. (The system was “mixed”, guaranteeing a marketbasket of critical services to everyone, with the option to go outside the basket through supplemental private insurance.) This was some time ago, and Italy is doing a neofascist dance with the Lega Nord bozos. At that, I’ve not heard of them letting the half-million Marocchini die in the streets.

May I play devil’s advocate. If it is so practical why don’t any of the other western countries with single payer or some other form of universal coverage offer coverage for undocumented immigrants? In Canada even if you migrate legally with a preexisting condition they are likely to deny you access to the national healthcare if the cost for your care is going to be more than $20000 a year.

The question is whether undocumented workers can purchase health insurance. Given how this country has long relied on these workers to pick our crops, care for the elderly and disabled and children, provide housekeeping services, maintain our lawns, work in our restaurants, etc, it seems unfair not to allow them to purchase the same insurance that should be available to our citizens.

Well, let me tell you folks about my visit to Kaiser yesterday.

Monday I went to lunch, sat down and all of a sudden there was a sharp pain in my lower right leg. I know I have a DVT there I thought maybe I pulled something.

Went back to work and the pain started to spread. Put some IcyHot on the leg and it countered the pain. Decided to not go to the gym and just go straight home.

Tuesday morning the leg pain increased, still thought I could bomb it with Tiger Balm and let it work out. Pain got steadily worse at work. Went home, more Tiger Balm and went to bed.

2AM Wednesday Morning very sharp pains. Can’t go to work now. Called Kaiser they have my medical records available to the bookers and I was given priority to come in. Afraid because Trump fucked us with new rules making those who use services more have to pay a higher amount of copays. Took a taxi to go to Kaiser in Hollywood.

Dr. brought me in right away did a real through exam. Said Blood tests, ultrasound and MRI on the leg NOW! Went downstairs to the lab, blood draws, over to the hospital for MRI and ultrasound. they rushed me from one department to the other. Done within an hour and info sent to Dr. Went back to see him, Coumadin isn’t working on me anymore and I have to go on Pradaxa. Dreading the cost.

Expecting to pay $100 for Pradaxa like a coworker did on SCREW CROSS. Relieved when copay was $40.

Oh and for all of the services yesterday, copay $15.

Every Kaiser employee I met yesterday showed a lot of concern for me. I thanked all of them for being a big help.

Well I am off for a couple days to let the Pradaxa kick in. Following up with my main Dr next week

BOTTOM LINE—IF I CAN GET THIS LEVEL OF HEALTH CARE, WHY CAN’T EVERYONE ELSE HAVE IT TOO?

I understand your demonic advocacy, but we cannot compare our system (if you can call it that) of immigration and our laws, procedures and policies for dealing with him in any kind of comparable terms with most any other nation.

They do not have long, open borders, most of them have a registration system that makes it difficult for undocumented immigrants to get established, as it is illegal for them to enroll their children in schools, open a bank account or even sign a lease without establishing legal residence.
