White House Steps on Another Rake, Emails Deceptive Ukraine Talking Points to House Democrats

Politics • Views: 26,342

In today’s episode of “Stepping on Rakes,” the Trump White House released a “transcript” of his call to Ukrainian President Zelensky, then promptly emailed a list of deceptive talking points to all their cronies — and by mistake, to the House Democrats.

And among other grotesqueries, they misspelled Zelensky’s name throughout the document.

Even better, they followed up this boneheaded maneuver by emailing again and telling the Democrats they wanted to “recall the message.”

You can already see GOP politicians and right wing media clowns parroting these talking points. They’re good at following orders, if nothing else.

Oh, and that “transcript?” It’s pretty fishy, of course.

UPDATE at 9/25/19 11:14:53 am by Charles Johnson

Since Trump and his flunkies are already trying to claim this exonerates him completely, here’s a very important point to keep in mind:

i didnt read all the talking points. just these two:

nothing was ‘leaked’. a complaint was filed according to procedure

you investigate to see of a claim has merit. whether a conversation is heard first hand or not, filing a complaint doesnt undermine the office of the president

‘You Have Come into My Wheelhouse’

(in its entirety from politicalwire.com)

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Trump were discussing gun violence over the telephone Tuesday morning when the president abruptly changed the topic to an intelligence community whistle-blower complaint that had Democrats talking about impeachment,” the New York Times reports.

“Ms. Pelosi stopped him short.”

Said Pelosi: “Mr. President, you have come into my wheelhouse.”

“The remark was a reference to Ms. Pelosi’s quarter-century of experience with intelligence matters in Congress, an aspect of her biography that played a central role in her decision on Tuesday to open a formal impeachment inquiry into Mr. Trump.”

she played him
has been at least since the pelosi clap at the sotu

and yes, she scared a bunch of us. made us reconsider and wonder.

phillyfaker: “This is why I find Dems frustration with her ridiculous. There is no doubt in my mind that Nancy Pelosi is better at politics than me, or anyone else here.”

“Former President Trump ordered the pilot to head to Russian airspace. He then secured four parachutes from the rear of the aircraft. He used three to secure large duffel bags of US currency and one for himself. Sometime in the next 30 minutes He tossed the three bags out the back door and then jumped himself. It’s not a transcript, but it’s close enough for government work.

To be serious for a moment though, calling it a transcript isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the anti-Trump side. You say “transcript” and people think “this is what they said.” That puts the pro-Trump side in the position of arguing “no, this thing we released wasn’t a transcript and isn’t actually accurate.” Which, given the circumstances, isn’t a great place to be.

Yes, that’s true, Issa did formally repay his debt to society for the crimes he was convicted of decades ago. However, he certainly has not shown a positive change in character in the intervening years, which is why he still gets dragged as being a crook.

This is and always has been about the rule of law, the freedom of our election system from foreign meddling, and holding the president accountable.

Pelosi summed it up correctly:

This system sucks

This system sucks. It starts with our mad method of funding schools with local property taxes, an effective weapon of class war used by the rich to protect their progeny from the onslaught of the un-moneyed masses. Consider Compton City, which is just a 33-minute car-ride away from Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills’ public schools spend $15,886 per student, Compton just $10,237 (and Compton’s property tax rate is far higher than Beverly Hills’). …

its hard to keep track of all the moving parts

there’s a second whistleblower case. about trumps taxes.
it’s quieter because richard neal is handling it differently

The tax whistleblower, meanwhile, went straight to Congress ― specifically to the House Ways and Means Committee, which had sued the Trump administration for refusing to provide copies of the president’s tax returns in response to a formal request. Democrats say they need Trump’s returns to make sure the IRS properly enforces tax laws against the president.

But Ways and Means Chair Richard Neal (D-Mass.) is far less outspoken than Schiff, and his approach to the tax case has been cautious. He decided to stay focused on the lawsuit, using the whistleblower’s material to bolster that case.

The whistleblowers are 1st hand witnesses (they’d have to have been in order to kick off the process with the IG DNI. The IG found it credible. Trump and Barr tried to spike it so that it wouldn’t get transmitted to Congress as required by statute.

That right there is evidence Trump knows the allegations are not only credible, but speak to multiple criminal acts. The coverup is additional criminal acts.

One good thing about the Trump Crime Family is that it is full of swamp creatures who will turn on each other to avoid being sent to jail. Trump will be blowing vast amounts of cash on Mob Lawyers trying every skeevy trick in the book …and still be sent to prison.

Don jr. is the one most likely to cave to prosecutors and turn on the old man for a plea deal if it means saving his own inept skin. Ivanka is the one who will go down with the ship with public support in the hopes of some sort of wealth transfer when the old man is finally gone. All of them acting completely in their own interests and ready to eat each other when the inevitable comes.

A whole lot of people are assuming the Senate would not vote to convict Trump in an impeachment trial if it came to that, but, given the GOP’s going to want to keep all of that power they’ve gotten with Trump in the WH and McConnell running the Senate, I fully expect there will be backroom dealings to shield Pence from his complictness in order to propel him to POTUS.

That’s exactly what happened. She knew that eventually Trump would get her those votes. Besides it’s been just 9 months as Speaker. Before moving, she had to at least get to know her crowd, get them to support her as speaker, let them get used to legislating, and then do the big ask. She could do that because she knows politics and psychology.

Adulthood and maturity is a spectrum. Which is why 30 states have the age of consent set at 16 (to some degree). And why you can get a drivers license at 16, vote at 18, drink and gamble at 21 (some places it’s 18), and be tried as an adult at like 13.

Nothing magically changes between 17 years 364 days and 18 years and 1 day.

Maybe, but someone on the PBS Newshour said that now the whistleblower’s report is out, there is apparently a possibility that the House is going to drop their other investigations to concentrate on this issue. Which means (to me, a total non-professional) that there must be more explicit stuff in there. Apparently this is the big, unambiguous lawbreaking they needed.

Honestly, I think it was more the realization after the op-ed was published Monday that if she allowed this scandal to pass, if she continued to stay opposed to impeachment, then she was fast facing a possible leadership challenge. My point is, if they don’t think they can get to 67 on any one charge, then they should force Republicans to vote on a couple dozen charges.

That said, I do see the potential for Republicans getting together and splintering their votes so there’s 60-65 votes to convict on each charge but not enough to remove on a single charge.

In the end, I hope Trump ends up like Henry Hill at the end of Goodfellas (though Hill’s life after the fictionalized events of the movies was, at times, just as interesting):

See, the hardest thing for me was leaving the life. I still love the life. And we were treated like movie stars with muscle. We had it all, just for the asking. Our wives, mothers, kids, everybody rode along. I had paper bags filled with jewelry stashed in the kitchen. I had a sugar bowl full of coke next to the bed. Anything I wanted was a phone call away. Free cars. The keys to a dozen hideout flats all over the city. I’d bet twenty, thirty grand over a weekend and then I’d either blow the winnings in a week or go to the sharks to pay back the bookies. Didn’t matter. It didn’t mean anything. When I was broke I would go out and rob some more. We ran everything. We paid off cops. We paid off lawyers. We paid off judges. Everybody had their hands out. Everything was for the taking. And now it’s all over. And that’s the hardest part. Today, everything is different. There’s no action. I have to wait around like everyone else. Can’t even get decent food. Right after I got here, I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup. I’m an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook.

Possibly joining Amash as an independent?

Ratcliffe is from one of the most conservative districts in the country. He isn’t going independent.

What’s the filing deadline in Iowa and New Hampshire?

Hypothetically, let’s say this goes down the best way possible - Trump is impeached, the Senate convicts, removes, and bars him from public office. Pence becomes president (I know, but I said best way possible, not perfect). Obviously he has to get on ballots ASAP, but how many other Republicans immediate announce? Talk about a complete clusterfuck of a primary…

I”m thinking those states that cancelled their primaries might look pretty silly.

Especially since several States are not having a Republican primary.

Good job, GOP.

The calculus was ALWAYS that Pelosi had to be SEEN as being dragged kicking and screaming to impeachment. She could NEVER be seen as too eager to resort to it.

I realize that, but Pelosi cut it damn close, as evidenced by the frustrations being voiced by Charles and others here as recently as this weekend.

I only meant “independent” in the sense that he’d resign from the GOP caucus. Amash had to give up his committee assignments when he left the caucus. Not like the House rules allow the minority to do much on the committees beyond grandstanding.

Good job, GOP.

So far, only Alaska, Arizona, Kansas, Nevada, and South Carolina have cancelled their primaries/caucuses.

Granted, the spectacle of a brokered convention after a president has been impeached/removed would be fucking magical. I’m rooting for the biggest shitshow we’ve ever seen on the GOP side, let it all burn.

I”m thinking those states that cancelled their primaries might look pretty silly.

I read an analysis somewhere that, absent a primary, the delegates go to the convention essentially unbound from any candidate by a popular vote- they can nominate anyone they want.

So, it might actually be *better* for those states- they can turn on Trump whenever, for any reason, and throw their lot behind Pence. If he’s still around, that is.

Ayep.

Ratcliffe’s nomination to replace Coates was solely because he pushed the Trumpist line during the Mueller hearing. He’s been spewing Trumpist talking points for months, but the timing of this is highly curious.

Interesting — here Ratcliffe was ranting and defending the President; he must have had first hand knowledge of Trump’s attitude on Ukraine. If so, that would just confirm our widespread belief here that every Republican in the House is either totally corrupt or a coward (or both).
