Very interesting article about how the war has developed and Russia’s evolving response. The bad news is that Russia is preparing its people for a long war.

Very interesting article about how the war has developed and Russia’s evolving response. The bad news is that Russia is preparing its people for a long war.

Based on this article, there are several things the West must do. Since Russia is planning on a protracted war, there is time to train Ukrainians in how to use even more advanced western military equipment, because eventually Eastern European NATO members are going to run out of old Soviet shit. We have to vigilantly shut down every avenue we can for Russia to obtain western technology they need for their high tech military equipment. The West, especially Germany, must wean itself off of Russian oil and gas as fast as possible, and we must be diplomatically adept with non-western countries, many of which are dependent on Ukrainian and Russian grain and Russian oil, and will suffer from sanctions on Russia. We also have to prepare westerners, especially Europeans, for the sacrifices they will have to make as their economies are likely to fall into recessions.

Gen. Mark Hertling had an interesting thread on Twitter yesterday about the advantages the Ukrainians would have with the more advanced artillery systems they’re beginning to receive from the U.S.

Exactly.

The newer NATO artillery systems can acquire targets more precisely and faster, deploy much more quickly and then leave, much faster than the Russians can respond.

Some of the new systems, such as the French Ceasar also have an autoloader. They can setup using gps, get a target located by gps, computer calculate the firing solution, configure and load the ammunition, fire multiple rounds and then scoot in a couple of minutes. Long before the Russian counter-battery firing can react.

In the 1980’s that set of activities would have taken my battery a couple of hours. And, because we used human observers without gps as target acquisition, with a lot less accuracy.

Since the Russians are still largely using stuff from that period, and based upon the Soviet WW2 experience, I expect that their current reaction time is closer to my 1980’s experience.

This will also have a very demoralizing effect on the Russian Army survivors.

This was from yesterday. Got to call and adjust fire while in the Army and this level of accuracy impressed the hell out of me.

Re: Germany. A lot of this can be initially laid at the feet of the Greens, as they made “No Nukes!” their rallying cry. But they also pushed for transitioning to renewables. But then Merkel needed the industrialists, and they wanted stability and cheap power, and so the nukes were shut down without spinning up the wind/solar/geothermal.

Result: Germany is well & truly fucked. Utterly dependent upon Russian oil & gas.

There are a whole lot of Russia-sympathizing asshats in Germany who have been allowed to dictate energy policy.

Very hard to tell.

That may have been a drone fired guided missile.

There are also these:

Those are well after my time. So I can’t speak from any personal experience with them.

There were guided shells when I was in. But you needed someone to point a laser designator at the target. And drones were just being developed at the time.

I remember being near the gate at Ft Sill when three fast moving objects flew past. As soon as they went over the gate they all precisely executed a 45 degree turn and continued past.

This was in the same period where Carnegie Mellon University was studying autonomous moving vehicles. They paid a grad student to stand with kill switch next to a library cart filled with computer equipment as it tried to navigate Schenley Park’s Flagstaff Hill. The cart would move a couple of feet then stop for 10-15 minutes while it computed and communicated with the main computer room.

Biased, yes; inaccurate, shouldn’t be:

When consumers see or hear an advertisement, whether it’s on the Internet, radio or television, or anywhere else, federal law says that ad must be truthful, not misleading, and, when appropriate, backed by scientific evidence.

I liked how they computed how the car would sit on it’s suspension system. The Pluto setting practically bounced the car off the pavement, and the sun setting collapsed the car to the ground before it got smushed with the bundle of lumber.

I was totally unprepared for all the British/Irish/Scottish culture when I moved into the Twin Cities decades ago. I think my peak exposure was when one of my former college teammates invited me to watch him throw a caber at some fair at Macalaster College. I do have fond memories of listening to the bagpipes (I believe the Minnesota Police Pipe Band) as the warmup for Boiled in Lead at First Ave during St Patrick’s week.

I knew nothing about this aspect of the Twin Cities. My brother graduated from Macalaster, and I went to visit him a couple of times. I went one other time (all of this in the 1980s) to visit a friend who graduated from St. John’s and was working in Northern Lights record store. For me it was all about the music. I just assumed, for some reason, that most folks descended from Scandinavian stock.

re: #89 stpaulbear

What years were you there & who did you play with? I was playing/hanging out in that scene from about 79 to 83. I sobered up in 1984. The band I was in was called Fine Art.

I never had skill or dedication to play. I just had a lot of free time to see music. I probably was out seeing local bands and First Ave/Seventh Street Entry acts at least three nights a week from like 84 to mid 90s. So, maybe we weren’t in the same places - I just want to believe we were.

re: #108 Backwoods_Sleuth

I’ve been saying that Republican Party minders and political officers will be required amongst all “suspect” companies that don’t toe the line under right wing fascist rule. And here we are with the hard right proudly announcing this part out loud already while the contest is still in play.

The Libertarian “free market” push has always been a sham, a ploy to achieve greater personal power for those in charge of their power structure and to stuff as much poor sucker cash into their bank accounts as possible. ALL of them are Con men, Snake oil salesmen, scoundrels, and often outright criminals.
