Everyone in the Democratic Party, take note. If our country is going down in flames, let us all be like Beto and simply not sit down and watch it happen as if we can’t do a damn thing about it. There are several things we can do about it.

Get in Republican politician faces. Get right up in there.

General strikes.

Targeted strikes.

Boycotts of the arms Industry and its enablers including businesses owned or BOD controlled by NRA shills.

Mass protests including in front of homes of Texas politicians.

Mass Billboard buys calling for the political heads of Republican Do-nothings.

A lot more other stuff as well.

The way the channels present this later will tell the tale of how effective this will be, unfortunately. Fight is good and necessary, but the media has found ways to turn Dem feistiness into something worth shock and appall that somehow manages to drive everyone away (including the folks who were demanding fight to begin with).

Predictably, all the comments to that Sherman tweet are full of grousing about it being performative or accusing Schumer of trying to hide the vote past the recess or something. Once again, those demanding Republicans be put ‘on the record’ are the first ones to call the vote pointless and attack Dems for it once it actually happens.

If I were running a Galactic empire I would put all star systems whose inhabitants are nearing space flight capability under surveillance.

If those inhabitants bring bad habits with them into space, like trashing the environment of their home planet so badly they need to flee to space, I’d give a shoot to kill order vs. all their space ships.

It would be pest control.

It’s a good thing that space is so vast that it’s unlikely that anyone is watching us.

And if they watching us they are likely machines or mostly machines. Outer space simply wreaks havoc on living organisms and life support would eat up an enormous amount of much-needed energy onboard any spacecraft.

I am assuming FTL is never going to happen which means sub-light speeds and hundreds if not thousands of years between star systems. A theory is that those species that are able to create machines/ robots/androids will be able to conduct interstellar travel. Whether or not consciousness itself can ever be loaded into these machines is still a big question.

After further inspection of the deceased suspect’s clothing, it now appears the suspect was not wearing body armor as previous information had indicated. Instead, Ramos is said to have been wearing only a plate carrier with no ballistic armor inside when he exchanged gun fire with several officers at the school.

Only “forewarning” of event, per Abbott, were three real-time Facebook posts (not really a forewarning given timing):

1) Gunman said he planned to shoot grandmother

2) Gunman said he shot grandmother

3) Gunman said he would shoot elementary school

Except…

The gunman in Tuesday’s elementary school massacre was a lonely 18-year-old who was bullied over a childhood speech impediment, suffered from a fraught home life and lashed out violently against peers and strangers recently and over the years, friends and relatives said…

Valdez said Ramos drove around with another friend at night sometimes and shot at random people with a BB gun. He also egged people’s cars, Valdez said…

“He posted videos on his Instagram where the cops were there and he’d call his mom a b—— and say she wanted to kick him out,” Reyes said. “He’d be screaming and talking to his mom really aggressively…”

As he grew older, problems at home became more acute and more apparent to neighbors, Flores said. He described seeing police at the house and witnessing blowups between Ramos and his mother…

Literally no political action, no demonstration, no protest, no nothing, has an effect without the vote. If someone sympathetic to your pleas isn’t in office to help push your concerns forward, then all it amounts to is screaming in the wind. And if someone isn’t in office that will listen, the point becomes putting someone there who WILL listen and will help give you want you want, or at least tell those in office that those concerns must be heeded or they’ll be out on their ass.

If you do not leverage your vote behind your demonstration, then its pointless. Those who do not understand this are either political naifs or have so bought into accelerationist revolutionary woo that they thing they can just burn it down and build on the ashes. As someone put it well on twitter though, no one renovates a house by demolishing it down to the foundations.

None of these “Amy Browns” seem to think that voting out GOPers might improve the chances that legislation gets enacted. They just think that the onus is entirely on Democrats to do something when the House is essentially split 50/50, and the Senate is 48/2/50, and Manchin/Sinema largely caucus as Democrats while blocking any rule changes that would facilitate passage of legislation.

The only reason that the filibuster has any power is that you can’t find 10 GOPers, let alone 1, who’d support changing the laws that need changing. They’re obstructionists precisely to deny action that would help all Americans.

Hold those responsible for this responsible, instead of throwing up your arms and claiming that the Democrats made me vote GOP. Fuck that.

This seems to counter the claim that the increased overdose deaths were caused by the lockdown causing despair, rather than being its own epidemic.

A grim prediction made half a decade ago by University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health epidemiologists and modelers has come true: More than 100,000 people are now dying from drug overdoses annually in the U.S. The milestone comes as the International Journal of Drug Policy publishes a special section of the June issue reflecting on the exponential growth in drug-related deaths the Pitt team uncovered in 2017.

The special section—based around the Pitt team’s landmark research article in Science that analyzed nearly four decades of U.S. drug overdose data—contains commentary by four teams of epidemiologists, addiction specialists, modelers and drug policy experts, as well as an update from the original authors and an editorial by one of the journal’s senior editors.

“Since 1979, drug overdose deaths in the U.S. have inexorably climbed along a near-perfect exponential curve, despite changes in the popularity of different drugs, new drug control policies, changing demographics, economic upswings and downturns, wars—and now a global pandemic,” said Donald S. Burke, M.D., Distinguished University Professor of Health Science and Policy in Pitt Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology and senior author of the Science publication. “The fact that we’re still seeing this exponential growth in another five years of data—413,000 more young Americans dead—shows that we really don’t understand the deep drivers of the epidemic.”

Nearly 108,000 overdose deaths in 2021 bear out a prediction from five years ago forecasting the devastating toll (Medicalxpress)

First, we absolutely do have to vote for Democrats because the alternative is a nightmare.

But second, it’s not wrong to criticize the Democratic Party for inaction and weak responses to this kind of shit. Beto O’Rourke demonstrated how I’d like Democrats to start acting, and he’s being covered on all the news channels for it. This is how to get media attention, and he isn’t just acting either - you can tell his heart is in this.

Compare to Chuck Schumer saying no, we’re not gonna try to bring any legislation and besides it’s time for our vacation. I understand why people are upset with Democrats; I am too. Maybe I’m expecting too much but I don’t think so.

The problem, Charles, is when folks rush to criticize Dems for inaction that they 1) let Republicans slide because of hyperfocus on Dems’s supposed inaction, and 2) they bash Dems for things that are the exact opposite of what’s happening, because the rush to lay blame at Dem fecklessness overwhelms everything else. Case in point:

But if we shut down valid criticisms of the Democratic Party and make people feel like they shouldn’t do it, that’s a terrible way to deal with it. We can’t affect what the Republican Party does, but we CAN affect the Democratic Party. It’s important to allow and welcome valid criticism.

Yes, Dems shouldn’t be immune to criticism, but so much of what I hear is trying to strangle and shitkick them for either doing things that they aren’t even doing, or for not doing things that they’re already doing. And because the reason we never hear about it, even us in the heavy political junkie circles, is because so much of the ‘real’ media finds ways to twist what’s happening or just refuse to report what’s happening so no one knows what actually is or isn’t being done unless you’re mainlining C-SPAN and the pols’ twitter feeds. Meanwhile, the misinformation about what is or isn’t being done disseminates without any filter because people are so quick to believe anything bad about what Dems are doing that they don’t care if it’s easily disprovable or not. It SOUNDS like them, thus it must be real. The same exact thing buried Hillary, and it’s threatening to bury Biden and the current slate of Dems, because whatever valid missteps they do make are being drowned out by the bullshit pipeline and makes it impossible to actually address the real problems underneath.

Yeah, we need to get past this “the media” excuse-making. It’s become the go-to to explain inaction, that there’s really a whole lotta stuff happening that would totally win voters over, but “the media” are suppressing all of it so the party looks bad. You know what “the media” is paying attention to, which is totally killing party morale at the moment? Joe F’ Manchin and Krysten “Name Your Price” Sinema out there telling the press out loud that the party ain’t gonna do nothin’ because the two of them will squash it flat without any fear of consequences.

“In the elevator, a friend - a pleasant, reasonable, moderate Republican - complained that the votes were politically motivated — …

“Then came the news. He admitted that despite personally supporting the measures, he had no choice but to vote against them. In a heavily polarized House, where districts were increasingly ruby red versus bright blue, any vote for any gun safety would invite a primary opponent and ignite his likely defeat. No issue, he told me, motivated his base more intensely than guns. Moderates would forgive and forget that he voted against background checks; but his base would never forgive him for voting for them.”

But their audience isn’t smaller than the left - Fox News dominates the cable rankings and Tucker Carlson’s show averages more than 3 million viewers nightly. Do they push right wing views? Obviously, because it’s highly profitable. Some of the people who work at Fox are actual right wing ideologues, but the reason this network is so corrosive is precisely because they have no ideals or morality — it’s all about feeding the hate monster they’ve created. Some people just do whatever they want to do with zero thought of consequences.

Deputies from the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office made the oddest of housecalls over the weekend, specifically because the house in question was sitting in the middle of a road in the middle of the night.

“Deputies responded to Berard Road in Loreauville regarding an illegal transport of a house. IPSO deputies arrived to find an abandoned truck, trailer and house blocking the 400 block,” IPSO said.

The illegally-parked domicile was discovered early Sunday morning around 3:30 a.m. blocking both lanes of a residential road in Loreauville, La., a small town that lies to the southeast of Lafayette.

This was either pandering to absolute morons, knowing the courts would never allow this, or a test to see if the courts would fail us all.

A federal appeals court panel has unanimously ruled that a Florida law intended to punish social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter is an unconstitutional violation of the First Amendment, NPR reports. The ruling is a major victory for companies that had been accused by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of discriminating against conservatives for not allowing hate speech on their platforms.

The law, called the Stop Social Media Censorship Act, was proposed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in January 2021. The measure was passed by the state legislature passed last year, and was the first of its kind to be signed.

But the three-judge panel of the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals concluded that it was overreach for DeSantis and the Republican-led Florida Legislature to tell the social media companies how to conduct their work under the Constitution’s free speech guarantee.

“Put simply, with minor exceptions, the government can’t tell a private person or entity what to say or how to say it. We hold that it is substantially likely that social media companies — even the biggest ones — are private actors whose rights the First Amendment protects,” said Circuit Judge Kevin Newsom, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, in the opinion.

New Zealand gun laws.
It is holy writ among NRA dupes that New Zealand has banned guns entirely and the population is defenseless against rampaging hordes of someone or another. Muslims? Chinese? Crazed transgender cannibals?
In fact, New Zealand has taken effective action but they have hardly banned guns. Currently, some 300,000 New Zealanders (6% of the population) own about 1.5 million firearms. A license is required, as is insurance and good storage. Semi-auto guns are banned, with the exception of rimfires holding less than 10 rounds and shotguns with permanent magazines for 5 rounds or less. There are no restrictions on manual action rifles that hold 10 rounds or less.
Pistols must be less than 400 mm long, have a barrel at least 101 mm long and a muzzle velocity no greater than 1600 fps. This was designed to rule things like the AK and AR pistols.
Hardly seems draconian to me. All 7 of my guns would qualify.

If I ever get subpoenaed I’m gonna opt for the Jordan treatment please.

Lay it all out then I’ll tell you if I care to comply.

I am allowed to do that, right?

re: #227 nines09

I wonder when Alex Jones tries to monetize this?
I had my second booster on Monday and as I suspected I felt like crap. Not as bad as before, but sweaty, achy and tired for all day Tuesday.
A lost day. Cooper was my companion and sensed I was under. Snug bug Coop.
And even though it is a witches brew, Nyquil works for me when I feel like that.
So I had to buy another bottle since I finished that 3 dose left bottle.
And when you buy Nyquil, well it’s on that list of THINGS that need ID and a sign off for and I almost said to the clerk “Be easier to buy a gun and shoot kids, wouldn’t it?”
Almost.
It will never end until you and me and America remove Republicans from any lever of power.

Indiana was mostly covered by Blue laws when I lived there—no alcohol sales except for restaurants on Sunday. One Sunday night I went to get some Nyquil and the checkout person gave me serious stinkeye. Later I learned it’s something alcoholics use in a pinch.

I know it’s not a requirement. He wants any lunatic with a gun to start shooting, potentially hitting innocent people, or being killed by police when they arrive.
He’s an antisocial fool who has no business being anywhere near government.

So like when tfg speaks at NRA this weekend.

Cause right now it’s deemed “gun-free”

re: #264 Decatur Deb

The gap between rhetoric and reality:

President Obama did not take anyone’s guns.
President Biden does not intend to take your guns.

If you can get to Camp Perry OH early tomorrow morning, President Biden will sell you a highly-prized ex-military M1 rifle. (Expect customer purchase limits, so bring the wife.)
thecmp.org

$1100 for a “curated” M1 Garand? Prices have really gone up.

Back in the late 1990s and early 2000’s it was primarily used to get rid of thousands of 40-50 year old WW2 rifles that the US had provided to Allies and occupied countries at the aftermath of WW2. At the time a lot of militaries and police organizations were upgrading from those firearms. Various Italian, West German, and Israeli police organizations were sending their old M1-Carbines back to the US. Korea, Greek and others were returning their M1 Garands. You could mail order a 50 year old worn out M1 carbine or M1 Garand made by Underwood Typewriter corp, GM’s auto parts division, or IBM for, maybe, $400.

They were also selling the returned ammunition as well. Cans of 50 year old 30-06 in machine gun links that had been stored and handled in who knows how. At least until the powers that be realized that every 5th round in the machine gun belt was armor piercing, which was illegal. The cartridges that were corroded were okay to sell, though.

re: #311 Crush White Nationalism

This was either pandering to absolute morons, knowing the courts would never allow this, or a test to see if the courts would fail us all.

Federal Appeals Court Blocks Florida’s Free Speech Law For Violating Free Speech (Daily Boulder)

I’m gonna go with the “pandering to morons” interpretation- with a sidebar of “fundraising exploitation”. Pure Legislation Theater true to the stock GOP script: get the GOPer Lege to pass some BS law, with a well-publicized signing ceremony replete with tough-talk rhetoric. If the courts uphold it, WIN!: if they knock it down, no BFD: just another opportunity to campaign and fundraise on whatever horseshit grievance they passed the bad law over. With an extra helping of “activist judges” whine on the side

Some people just do whatever they want to do with zero thought of consequences.

Check the bedrooms. They may have had a couple too many and needed to sleep it off.
