Hi. This week, we’re taking a look at the cruelty and shamelessness of when Ron DeSantis human trafficked a bunch of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. This did not go how the GOP thought it would, so they spent the last few weeks lying and pretending it did.

Liberals not giving immigrants their own homes on Martha’s Vineyard is supposed to expose something hypocritical about liberals to an audience in favor of kidnapping immigrant children to discourage them.

It’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine, so I decided to comment on this secondary point: the origin of the Protocols is still unknown, and there’s no credible evidence connecting them to the Okhranka (the testimonies about Rachkovsky’s participation having been discredited). See M. Hagemeister’s studies on this point.

See M. Hagemeister’s studies on this point.

Indeed, but they probably did originate in Russia and were obviously created in furtherance of Russian policy objectives of the time. My purpose is not to accuse specific government agencies per se, especially considering that most present-day influence operations are not the work of official Russian agencies, but of the regime’s supporters in the oligarchy. It is analogous to the lies pumped out by the Republican National Committee during the Trump administration. Official agencies were not usually involved but the lies were very much in support of Trump and his policies.
To take it further, I have actually had the idea that the American stooge tail wags the Kremlin dog in this. American collaborators are incomparably more skilled and experienced at grifting Americans than Russia’s own assets could ever be. It is they who develop and package the specifics, while the Russians provide overall direction, specific objectives, and assets (like the troll farms) to assist in the spread of disinformation. They also provide the incentive, of course, but I seriously doubt that very much of this involves involves actual money changing hands. Rather, it would be in the form of coordinated propaganda support, confidential information to help in investments and political strategy, and the protection of critical information about the American accomplices (that is, blackmail).

Meanwhile in Pennsylvania Doug Fascist trolls the bottom feeders.

As campaign struggles, Doug Mastriano plans ‘40 days of fasting and prayer’
The Republican gubernatorial candidate is losing some support among GOP allies as his cash-strapped campaign turns to Twitter memes and, apparently, divine intervention

A few more Mastriano and Oz signs have popped up here.
The usual brain dead bozos who were delirious with joy when Trump infected the WH.
If they don’t know by now they never will. All the anti Fetterman ads are just outright lies. He’s going to let all the black criminals out to rape and maim you white peoples.

Fetterman went to Daily Kos to talk about his tattoos: dailykos.com

I have nine dates tattooed on my right forearm. Each one is a day on which someone died violently in Braddock, Pennsylvania, while I was mayor. Gun violence and violent crime might be jokes to someone like Carlson, but they are very real to people in towns like Braddock.

The first one that I tattooed on my arm is “01.16.06.” That’s the date on which Christopher Williams was shot dead while delivering pizzas. This was a man about my age at the time. He had a 12-year-old daughter. I just couldn’t get over the fact that he was never going home to her.

Another tattoo reads “02.03.07,” the date that 23-month-old Nyia Page was found dead after her father sexually assaulted her and left her in the bitter cold. Her tiny footprints in the snow led an officer to her body. And I have “09.16.13,” the date Derrail Roilton, a father of two, was found dead in the yard next to his mother’s home after being shot three times.

Russian soldiers are already going house to house in some villages and writing down the names of male residents, local residents say. They claim soldiers have told them to be ready for a call-up after the referendum.

Federal authorities said earlier this month that Tiffani Shea Gish left three threatening voicemails for Florida Judge Aileen Cannon. In one voicemail, she said to the judge, “I’m also Trump’s hitman, so consider it a bullet to your head from Donald Trump himself.”

In another voicemail, she said, “you’re full of shit, and I’m going to fucking have you shot myself, I’ve already ordered snipers and a bomb to your fucking house.”

In these voicemail messages, Gish referred to herself as “Evelyn Salt” and said she was in “charge of nuclear for the United States Government.”

I’m back briefly. Haven’t had time to catch up with the day’s news. Landline came back up Monday evening, then went down again for a few hours yesterday afternoon, came back up again let’s afternoon and stayed up through the evening until we lost dialtone again thisafternoonsometime between 12:20 and 12:40. It was still down when my son and I left for the library twenty minutes ago.

We’ve had no internet access at home since Saturday afternoon, and a technician is supposed to come out tomorrow.

Early heads up for you folks hanging out in this thread - tomorrow morning I’m putting the site in “maintenance mode” (you’ll only be able to get to the maintenance page), so we can dump the database to an enormous SQL file, send it over to the new server, and import it into MySQL. The first part only takes a few minutes but importing the whole DB will probably take a while; not sure exactly how long because it’s the latest MariaDB and a very fast server, but it could be several hours.

I’ll put up a post about it so everyone can see it. And you can reach me on Twitter if anyone needs me.

Ian Andrew Ziering is an American actor and voice actor best known for his role as Steve Sanders on the television series Beverly Hills, 90210, which he played from 1990 to 2000. He is also the voice of Vinnie on Biker Mice from Mars. From 2013 to 2018, he starred as Fin Shepard in the Sharknado film series.

Hope the new owners come thru with as little damage as possible, and given the property is in a FEMA flood plain, renewing their homeowner’s insurance is gonna be a bitch.

Homeowner’s shouldn’t be a problem, but generally doesn’t cover flood damage, especially in a flood plain. It’s the supplemental flood insurance that is going to be a real bitch.

re: #35 Eclectic Cyborg

Of course Greg Kelly is too stupid to understand a lot of the kids going the African-American museums ARE BLACK.

Greg Kelly is declaring that those blacks kids aren’t American, and that things that happened to black people aren’t American history. He’s further stating that history is a rhetorical exercise in which marginalized and persecuted people are not entitled to participate.

I mean, it’s an explicit statement of what’s implicit in Great Man liberal history: history is the history of the imperial core and the bourgeois individuals of the imperial core, framed as the imperial core dictates: the stigmatized and persecuted may physically be in the country but their experiences are not of the country. The notion that they belong, that their experiences matter and constitute a part of the machinery that create and maintain the society, is in direct opposition to the needs of the state.

It’s not stupidity, it’s the same thing that colonial powers did to their subjects. The marginal people must exist and be marginal—ideally trained to accept that they will always be marginal—and this is achieved curation of culture to omit both their place within the society and their marginal qualities that grant them distinctiveness.

re: #101 The Ghost of a Flea

Remember that “assimilation” exists to be a moving goalpost.

You’re supposed to remove your distinctiveness to be accepted by the hegemony (the people running the imperial core) but since they need you to not have equal rights—you exist to do cheap labor and destroy your body, under threat of state terror—and not have social standing (that culturally gestures at a legal entitlement to rights) they will never accept you without provisions, without compliance checks.

The point of what reactionaries are doing with history is to establish an educational system that demands assimilation—deny both that you have a distinct history, but also deny that your history is reflective of disenfranchisement within the official history—with the full knowledge that it is lose/lose.

They’re especially angry that AA kids are going to AA museums, because what they want is for those kids to try…and fail…to adhere to the hegemonic narrative, precisely because it will reduce the quality of their lives.

Racism isn’t always about hate, but racism always is about making concrete an entirely ephemeral power distinction because that way you can take more from the deemed-inferior party. Racist history exists to make the abuses of the present seem inevitable and necessary: this is ideally achieved by parasitically inserting it into the people most harmed by it.

African American history is thus a kind of trilemma problem for the racist.

If it is presented as authentically American, it suggests that people not subject to racism empathize with those subject to racism…and to see the commonalities between what has been achieved by racism and what has been achieved by, say, class narratives and xenophobia.

If it is presented as one valid subset of American historical experience, that suggests there is no one unifying, top-down-dictated narrative.

If it is presented as exclusively the concern of African Americans distinct from other Americans, then implicitly African Americans are entitled to narrative their own American experience.

None of this is acceptable, so African American history cannot be valid, period.

Homeowner’s shouldn’t be a problem, but generally doesn’t cover flood damage, especially in a flood plain. It’s the supplemental flood insurance that is going to be a real bitch.

Dunno know YMMV.

FL’s ins market is EF’d up with major carriers refusing to write, or to raise rates X3 Fire/non Windstorm in FL.

Personal knowledge, friend on the east coast, house above FEMA food plain, upper middle class subdivision, two miles from Atlantic ocean Fire/non Windstorm will not be renewed by State Farm. He’s willing to pay higher rate - only fire/non windstorm ins available thru State of FL backed Citizens Insurance (insert Twilight Zone theme).

A Bayfront house in FEMA flood plain, having suffered recent storm surge, YMMV.

The Florida real estate insurance situation is already a dire fuck up right now that will explode into cinders and ashes once the cleanup and rebuilding bills start to add up from this catastrophic hurricane. Federal Flood Insurance assistance has been scaling back for years now and with it insurance companies going bankrupt and pulling out of the market entirely.

Traditional Republican ideology is for “free market” forces to magically fix problems out of thin air, but DeSantis is not old GOP. He is a fascist more than willing to use populism and more traditionally “left” ideas involving government intervention in order to further his overall agenda of personal power, cynical cronyism and racism. I expect DeSantis to announce direct government programs to back underwriters and even a Florida State Insurance program …direct Socialism.

Socialism here in Florida will be needed to even buy a home here now or allow for flood insurance. And Republican voters will end up cheering for it. …Because it furthers a racist power hungry despot.

Or he’s scared of a nuclear exchange.

You know, the coercive force that’s the reason that a tiny number of national operators could play proxy war games on the rest of the world?

Like, the actual lesson of the Cold War is that nuclear weapons threaten simply by existing, by being the bottom floor of what is possible in any international crisis. They’re terror weapons and always have been: either using them is an atrocity or the user has adopted an understanding of total war so broad that atrocity does not exist.

I’m not surprised that people are individually, or collectively, terrified, and coming to conclusions I disagree with.

After 3 weeks, I finally tested negative today so am hoping I am finally done with COVID but that will depend on whether tomorrow will confirm today’s results.

I am disappointed in Chris; his suggestion that we stop arming Ukraine seems designed to lead them into defeat. re: #142 EPR-radar

Being scared is no excuse for objectively stupid thinking that can only increase the risk.

And the point of a terror weapon is to put people into a mental place where compliance seems safer.

I’m not agreeing with Hayes, but I don’t think the tweet merits the intensity.

I’m also being a two very specific kinds of dickhead:

On one hand I’m gesturing towards the fact that Americans are suddenly having to negotiate the kind of fear they used to inflict on others. I find it interesting because it appears to be yet another demonstration that fascism is the violence of the imperial periphery returning to the core. Cold War fear of annihilation was textured by MAD; we’re now in a different era where limited nuclear exchange is feasible, the hegemonies aren’t clear. The whole strikes me as half a sigma from the bell curve of “well, I didn’t expect the face-eating leopards to eat my face.”

On the other I’m pointing out that social media is built to create endless chains of reaction, and does so via the twin engines of (1) being a shitty media in which it’s easy to misread, decontexualize a statement, or attribute the quality of truth to something said casually because everyone’s responding fast in what’s effectively a room of shouting attention-seekers, (2) specifically providing people with shit to be upset about.

The tweet Hayes is responding to is doing some tedious moralizing about another response to something else that amounts to boomer griping: “look at these tweeting kids how indifferent they are to nuclear war, aren’t they dumb and can’t solve all our problems.” Hayes is going a personal vector of “I guess the only thing we could do is…” in response to that initial thought-smear; it’s not a smart response (the smart response being to delete Twitter) but it’s pertinent to the constrained hypothetical moralized the boor has stated: this is a possible “do something” the US could do.

His next tweet is the qualifier that it’s not a good idea.

It’s just…not worth the energy to condemn because it’s just parsing one tweet—and that tweet reveals something far more interesting since it’s actually an unintentionally revelatory response demonstrating how nuclear terror functions and how Americans just kind of haven’t digested the reality that somebody could get nuked for, like, piddly little nothing. The boomer-brain he’s responding to is still thinking in Cold War terms where the it’s all grand ideological motives and the bad guy gives a shit about their nation and also assumes they’ll be second strike; we’re in a brave new world of Dudes with Nukes Who Say They’ll Do First Strike and people are not going to react well.

Mind you, none of that is interesting as the other Americans who are really excited by the idea of showing naked dominance through nukes and thus still like and “understand” Putin…

I’m not agreeing with Hayes, but I don’t think the tweet merits the intensity.

His next tweet is the qualifier that it’s not a good idea.

Hayes next tweet was:

I think there are also some pretty thorny long term arms control issues around that course, independent of what it would mean for Ukrainians. You don’t *really* want to incentive threatening nukes as a means of winning conflicts or annexing territory more broadly.

I think he should have also said that he was retracting his suggestion that American stop arming Ukraine.

It sure looks that way. So Hayes is a natural born appeaser or is paid to be that way.

If you’re going to define public figures, people who produce hours of speech every week, by one tweet lifted out of all they’ve said in the last six months, why not this one for Chris Hayes: “Putin is a monster.”

I posted that for the immortal words of our friend, Goddamned Frank. Not to get us all to hate on Chris Hayes. But here we are anyway.

It’s not like Chris Hayes hasn’t spouted off with some not-so-acceptable opinion in the past.

Martha’s Vineyard is not especially affluent. A lot of well-off people have vacation homes there, but the people who live there have incomes below the state average — and have to deal with high housing costs.

Ron DeSantis dumped on working class people. But that’s what Fascists Republicans do.
