From Talking Points Memo:

Senate Chaplain Issues Pointed Plea For Action On Guns: Time To Move ‘Beyond Thoughts And Prayers’

Senate Chaplain Rear Admiral Barry Black (Ret.) was unusually pointed in his plea for action after yet another school shooting Monday that left both children and adults dead.

“Lord, when babies die at a church school, it is time for us to move beyond thoughts and prayers,” Black said Tuesday morning to open the Senate session. “Remind our lawmakers of the words of the British statesman Edmund Burke: ‘All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.’”

Because kids getting massacred in a public school is all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Probably didn’t mean it that way, but it’s still a shitty way to frame things.

This. Right here. Same problem with cops. “Well, I don’t murder Black folks in the street, so don’t blame me, but trust me; we’re dealing with it.”

And why is that not a valid statement? Again, to go back to a previous example, are all Muslims terrorists? I think, at some point, we need to start looking past the generalizations of “all X we don’t like are Y” and start looking for the voices in those communities that are combating the problem, and amplify them. Because guess what: From personal experience, it’s hard to be heard when the assholes have a megaphone and millions of parrots, and I’m just one person.

Why should that matter? I can understand that as a criteria for laws against discrimination, but I see no reason why that should matter when it comes to simply not judging all books by one cover. But whatever; I’m clearly wrong here. The next year is going to be nonstop grievance theater from churchgoers talking about “being repressed by the evil ‘woke’ agenda,” and sane and rational people laughing at all of us, whether we agree with those statements or not.

Because cops don’t clean house of the bad actors. They don’t. Fucking lip service while non-whites have to approach every encounter with the police as maybe their last five minutes on this planet is bullshit. If anything, cops get defensive and a bit pissy when that’s pointed out. And we all know how well cops take even the slightest hint of civilian criticism.

Quite frankly, if you’re part of a trigger happy org that’s murdering civilians, based in large part on skin color, you should probably quit if you think that’s bad and there’s nothing you can do to fix the problem.

Sometimes random headlines in the news aren’t as random as you think. Consider these three seemingly unrelated stories, all from Pennsylvania.

The first is the news that everyone around these parts is talking about this week: the roughly 8,100-gallon spill of hazardous chemicals at a plant in lower Bucks County that entered the Delaware River, threatens to enter a main water plant for Philadelphia, and has caused a massive run on bottled water across the region.

Also this weekend, across the state: Officials at Shell’s brand new $6 billion plastics plant on the Ohio River north of Pittsburgh warned residents that maintenance problems would cause another round of elevated flaring — the latest in a string of incidents since the facility’s November opening that have turned the night sky orange while exceeding the expected yearly limit for air pollution in little more than a month.

Meanwhile, nearby in East Palestine, Ohio, the fallout from February’s toxic train wreck of chemical cars on the Norfolk Southern line continued last week as Pennsylvania’s Blackhawk School District, roughly 15 miles away, filed a federal lawsuit claiming that its schoolchildren were endangered after “toxic fires and deadly plumes dumped a lethal cocktail on its buildings, property soil, and water supplies where deposits of the toxic materials have been found.

One of Europe’s largest ammunition manufacturers, Norwegian Nammo, has said it’s unable to expand to meet new quotas and respond to Ukraine’s increased demand because a nearby data center is using up all the electricity in the central Norway region to store TikTok videos

Tik Tok videos are then cumulated to generate cryptocurrency, which is immediately invested in NFTs, which are then featured on more Tik Tok videos: a self-perpetuating cycle that will soon consume all the world’s energy generating capacity.

I remember when that plan was being built and it was hailed as bringing industrial jobs back to Beaver County which never recovered from the Michael Millken engineered collapse of the steel industry in 1984.

The plant was supposedly going to hire thousands of workers but right now has employees only 600 and has made the local pollution far worse than the old J&L coke ovens in Aliquippa ever did.

A federal judge has decided that former Vice President Mike Pence must testify to a grand jury about conversations he had with Donald Trump leading up to January 6, 2021, according to multiple sources familiar with a recent federal court ruling.

But the judge said - in a ruling that remains under seal - that Pence can still decline to answer questions related to his actions on January 6 itself, when he was serving as president of the Senate for the certification of the 2020 presidential election, according to one of the sources.

Pence still has the ability to appeal. Trump has repeatedly lost executive privilege assertions he’s tried to make in the special counsel’s investigation.

Painting contractor has taken over my kitchen, it’s almost 11:30, I’m getting a bit peckish, and outside there’s torrential rain and 30+mph sustained winds - so going to the store is out of the question. Hopefully they’ll take a lunch break and I can sneak a tamale or two into the microwave.

one guess as to who did NOT actually read the bill (answering mtg doesn’t count)

FYI: the bill specifically says the bill imposes sanctions on persons (individuals and entities) involved in forced organ trafficking and authorizes the Department of State to revoke the passports of individuals convicted of certain crimes related to organ trafficking.
(my bold)

Apparently tommy doesn’t know the definition of “adjudication”.

re: #32 Scottish Dragon

I am glad that you posted that. It has been agreed that members of NATO would, as National priorities, significantly increase artillery ammunition manufacture over the next couple of years.

I suspect that the artillery plant got some pushback from the data server facility over power usage. And I suspect that the data server facility’s understanding of National priorities has since been clarified. Unless, of course the data server facility is used by the National Government as a disaster recovery site.

There was wide assumption that mass artillery fires were a thing of the past. That notion has been thoroughly disabused. We are massively ramping up production capacity for 155mm and 105mm over the next two years here in the US.

It looks like the Last of Us Pt 1 PC release is a mess.

Another shoddy port by Iron Galaxy(of Batman Arkham Knight, and UC Collection fame), with absolutely awful HW utilization(more CPU bound than most RTS games), suttery mouse camera movement(same issue from UC Collection), lack of Screen Dirt Effect setting toggle, and general lack of optimization.

Just remember: Sony hired the most infamous PC porting team to handle their two biggest IPs, despite owning Nixxes, the most famous PC porting team.

NOT RECOMMENDED until issues are fixed.

Game is horribly optimised. It takes almost 8GB in VRAM on just medium/low settings and it keeps crashing to desktop every 10-15 minutes from my experience.

Specs:
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
32GB RAM
8GB NVIDIA RTX 2080 SUPER

re: #98 Crush White Nationalism

My first thought would be to see if there are communication issues. Bad connection? Bad port?

My second would be to see if there are problems with the driver/software etc. Anything that might return a recorded system error. That could be viewed in some system log.

Lots of other possibilities, but I would look at things that I can see, fix, replace etc.

Sort of like the joke about the cop who one night comes across a guy crawling about under a street lamp.
The cop asks “What are you doing?”
The guy replies “I’m looking for my wallet.”
The cop asks “You lost your wallet here?”
The guy replies “No, I lost my wallet over there. but it’s too dark to see anything over there.”

File under “know thy enemys M.O.”:
How Stochastic Terrorism Uses Disgust to Incite Violence [Scientific American]
Pundits are weaponizing disgust to fuel violence, and it’s affecting our humanity
A week and a half before the midterm elections, a man broke into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s house, screaming “Where’s Nancy?” and attacked her husband with a hammer. David DePape, charged in the attack, had posted a slew of rants that included references to a sprawling conspiracy theory known as QAnon, which claims that Democratic, Satan-worshipping pedophiles are trying to control the world’s politics and media.
Several hours before, Fox News’s Tucker Carlson interviewed right-wing activist Christopher Rufo, who claimed drag queens participating in book readings were trying to “sexualize children.” The people who support these events, he said, want to create “a sexual connection between adult and child, which has of course long been the kind of final taboo of the sexual revolution.”
With the support of former President Donald Trump, the pedophile conspiracy theory has contributed to a widening spiral of threats and violence, including the deadly January 6 Capitol insurrection. A revival of the “groomer” smear against the LGBTQ community (a reference to a pedophile) has ramped up the aggression. Right-wing media personalities and activists have created or amplified conspiracy theories about Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Bill Gates and others.
Dehumanizing and vilifying a person or group of people can provoke what scholars and law enforcement officials call stochastic terrorism, in which ideologically driven hate speech increases the likelihood that people will violently and unpredictably attack the targets of vicious claims.
At its core, stochastic terrorism exploits one of our strongest and most complicated emotions: disgust.

So it wasn’t connected to your computer?

Do you know if it has it’s own internal wireless and was trying to communicate with a corporate server to update its software and configuration or it was totally internal in its startup?

(Most printers I have seen do not have the computational capability to configure on their own. But I probably lead a very sheltered life these days.)

Guns don’t kill people, neither do cars, or knives or any other object. People kill people

Cars are designed to transport people, not to kill them. Knives are there to prepare food or as a tool, they are not there to kill people.

Guns are there to kill people. AR 15’s are not even viable as hunting weapons; they are TOOLS FOR KILLING MASSES OF PEOPLE.

I doubt Dominion is at all interested in settling.

If I were running Dominion’s strategy, my minimal settlement offer would be to have Fox News ended as a business + enormous personal fines vs. the various high-level offenders.

the illogical, unfounded, paranoia will not budge.
nor will the perverse interpretations of the 2A.

it is for those reasons that i’ve advocated for years that it’s best to not pursue any idea about gun bans, national registrations, databases, etc.

you reduce* the number of gun deaths by setting a standard and enforcing it.
it’s simply “control your weapon at all times.”
hold people responsible for what they do or neglect to do.
take their freedom, finances and future IF they’ve demonstrably fucked up.

you leave everyone else alone.

i’d even consider all-gun-owner juries.
like i said above, i dont think responsible gun owners want the nutters to be the face of all gun owners.

*there is no way to stop every shooting.
there is no way to know who every determined person with a gun is, or what their plans are.

Dozens dead, injured in border fire at migrant detention center in Juárez

JUÁREZ, Mexico - Viangly Infante Padrón watched in fear as the waiting area of a Mexican immigration center where her husband was detained began filling with gray smoke.

Mexican authorities ushered her and other waiting women and outside. Seven hours earlier, she said, Mexican immigration agents began rounding up anyone who appeared to be a migrant, including her Venezuelan husband, Eduard Carabello who was selling roses on a street corner.

As the smoke choked the waiting room, she begged authorities to do something.

“I screamed, ‘Open the door!” she said. “That whatever the case, they are human beings and deserve to live. And they let them burn inside.”

[…]

Infante Padrón said she and her husband and three children have legal permission to be in Mexico, she said.

“All of the migrants they saw on the street, they picked up everyone,” she said. “They didn’t ask if we were legal, if we had papers. They just said, ‘Are you Venezuelan? Let’s go.’”

“It’s illogical, what happened,” she said.

Since Dec. 28, 2022, the family has waited in Juárez for an opportunity to legally enter the United States. They had received an appointment through the U.S. CBP One application for Saturday. [emphasis added]

[…]

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been expelling migrants from Central America and some South American countries to Juárez, sometimes by the hundreds per day.

[…]

US policy made a significant contribution to this.
