Just a few days ago someone asked me, “So what the heck is this ‘pop’ thing, anyway?”

Now, at last, I feel like I have a solid answer.

If ur dream is to shoot a video in a cemetery, sometimes u just have to do it before u end up there in the ground. Was it cold? Yes. Was it fun? Totally. Did we have to break out when we got locked in when the cemetery closed? Also yes, true story. Another one shot by our drummer @chriseganiii

*THIS IS POP 2 LYRICS*
Pop, this is pop
This is pop, yeah, this is pop

This is pop and it goes in your ears
All that matters is u like it there
This is pop and there’s no defense
It’s silly, it’s stupid, it’s just pretend
It comes in waves, it’s got nothin to say
And if u ask me, it’s better that way
This is pop, it’s so fucking good
This is pop and it’s understood
That there’s nothin to understand
I don’t understand
Anyone who says the can
I don’t understand, do u understand?
This is pop and it feels like summer
This is pop and it’s better off dumber
This is pop and it comes in waves
This is pop, it’s got nothin to say
Turn it up, turn it up, turn it up louder
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme all the power
Pop, this is pop
This is pop, yeah, this is pop

This is pop, not a simple answer
This is pop, it’s a total disaster
Turn it up, turn it up, turn it up louder
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme all your power
Put the needle back, I wanna hear it again
Again, again, again, i wanna hear it again
I wanna sing along to someone else’s song
I wanna sing along and get all the words wrong
There’s nothin to understand
I don’t understand anyone who says they can
I don’t understand, do u understand?

They say it’s false
They say that it’s plastic
It’s got it’s faults
But i look past it
Why would i give it up
When it makes me so ecstatic?
This is pop and it feels like summer
This is pop and it tastes like sugar
This is pop and there’s no defense
It’s silly, it’s stupid, it’s just pretend
This is pop and it comes in waves
This is pop, it’s got nothin to say
Turn it up, turn it up, turn it up, turn it up louder
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme all the power
I don’t understand, do u understand?
This is pop
This is pop
This is pop

Rare bird sighting for piston engine enthusiasts. About ten minutes ago I saw what appeared to be a Lockheed constellation fly overhead—the thrum of four large engines attracted my notice. Laverne, California, about 3,000 ft. AGL, on a northwest heading. Pretty sure it wasn’t a B-24, the verticals at the ends of the horizontal stab were too small, and I thought I caught a glimpse of the center VS. Serendipitous!

Was it this one?

There are only two airworthy Constellations in the world. This one, the Breitling Super-Constellation, is based in Basel Switzerland.
The other one belongs to the Historical Aircraft Association and is based in Australia. Of course, either one could reach any point in the world in about 48 hours. The Australian aircraft is painted in red and white Qantas colors and has wingtip fuel tanks while the Swiss one does not.

I know most think of the Constellation as the prettier bird, but I always preferred the DC-6 and there are still a number of them working in the world:

That’s my idea of beautiful.

Meanwhile, Paris is currently curled up next to my shoulder, touching me gently with her feet and looking soulfully at me. Earlier, I asked “do you want your hair done?” And she wandered over for grooming with the cat brush, flipping herself on the other side when I made a little twirly gesture at her. Godamnit, I do not want to have to spend vet money just because cats tend to fall in love with me.

When you name them, feed them, brush them, the next strategy you need is keeping her singular. With an open door policy, Paris will either have friends, or kittens, or both.

I suppose it’s possible. The sun was high and behind it, not too far from the flight path, but I’m certain that I saw twin verticals at the ends of the Horizontal stab as it moved further away. The DC-6 fuselage is closer in shape to what I saw, although from underneath the Connie’s sexy curved profile isn’t visible. When I came out to Southern California in 1958, age four and a half, it was on a DC-6. All I really remember is…LOUD.

I also prefer the DC-6 partly for its nearly unmatched operating economics, which is the big reason so many have survived (DC-6 census at Old Props). I crossed the Pacific, from Yokota Japan to Travis AFB California, on a DC-6. Had stops at Wake Island and Honolulu. Took 29 hours because we had to change an engine at Wake.

It took me nearly that long to travel from Istanbul to Los Angeles in 2006 in modern jets. However, that included an hour out return to Istanbul due to a popped oil hose in #2 (A-340), a wait while a replacement plane was prepped, a layover in New York, and arriving at LAX at one in the morning.

Now I feel like a contemporary of the Wright Brothers: my first flight was on a DC-6, but I most vividly recall my second and third: I accompanied my father on a business trip to San Francisco (from L.A.): we flew up on a DC-7, but came back on the then-new DC-8 jet. Travel of the future!!!

I remember a little about the flight (commercial airline) from Ohio to California when I was about three. I’m not sure it was my first, since we were returning, but I don’t remember how we travelled to Ohio. Prop plane, if memory serves — they gave me chewing gum for pressure changes.

Knowing Turdo those “coins” are just gold painted.

Well, that coin in that ad does appear to be a genuine “American Eagle” bullion coin (or at least a picture of one): even assuming that any pitch relating to Donald Trump isn’t just a fraudulent scam/grift from the get-go, the smallest of those coins (they all have the same design) is the “$5” piece: 1/10 oz. of gold, which seems to retail for about $250 or so.
So maybe a “qualifying order” of multiple thousands of dollars (presumably as some sort of campaign contribution [??]) might justify their giving the sucker valued donor a cheap-ish token as a “thank-you”.
Maybe, but it’s Trump, so scam is more likely….

Saw this article on the Constellation -

First flight of Constellation ‘Bataan’

After eight years of restoration Lockheed C-121A Constellation N422NA (c/n 2605) made its first flight on 21 June 2023. The Connie is named ‘Bataan’, which dates from the time that the propliner was flown as USAF 48-613 and was used as a VC-121A personal transport by General Douglas MacArthur. He flew ‘Bataan’ during the days that he was the Supreme Commander Allied Powers during the Korean War.

The restoration by Fighter Rebuilders in Chino (CA) was carried out for Lewis Air Legends of San Antonio (TX). The owner Rod Lewis acquired ownership in April 2015. He bought the Connie from the Planes of Fame (POF) Air Museum in Chino (CA) with the idea of bringing the plane into the warbird circuit. After a temporary fix, N422NA was flown from the POF storage in Valle (AZ) to Chino in January 2016. Then the actual restoration was taken up.

As USAF 48-613 the C-121A was taken on charge in January 1949, and became one of the 4-engined transport taking part in the Berlin Airlift. Conversion into VC-121A, as mentioned before, took place in 1950. It served as a VIP plane until 1965 when it was withdrawn from use. But not for long as it became NASA N422NA and served in the Apollo space program until 1969. The plane was then flown to the US Army Aviation Museum at Fort Rucker but it obviously did not fit in the collection. And so N422NA ‘Bataan’ was sold to the Planes of Fame Museum in May 1993.

First flight of Constellation ‘Bataan’

By the way -

The Constellation was designed in 1939 by Lockheed Aircraft Company as a high speed, transcontinental passenger aircraft for Howard Hughes’ TWA (Trans World Airlines). The first aircraft flew in 1943, but WW11 meant all aircraft production was used by the US Army Air Force for transport purposes. There were a number of variants and a total of 856 were built.

One variant was the Super Constellation which first flew in 1951. A total of 579 were built of which QANTAS took 16.

*snip*

Connie is now the only flying L-1049 Super Constellation in the world. Until recently, the other was the Breitling Super Constellation in Switzerland. Amazingly both aircraft were built next to each other in the factory. Connie is #4176 and Breitling Constellation is #4177. An L-1649A Super Star (the last model of the Constellation line) is currently in the USA being restored to flight by the Lufthansa Museum.

Just thinking about Facebook running a Mastodon instance, and if they out a lot of resources behind it, it really could thwart the model. My biggest complaint with the model is the whole issue of having to copy a link from a different server to mine just so that I can like it. That goes away if everyone decides to be on one server.

He was my third. The hard thing with him was that he was my middle son’s dog. The only “good” thing about his passing now is that we’d been expecting it, we just didn’t know exactly when. The other two were quite sudden.

Edited because he was a great dog. There’s just not quite the right word for describing what I feel having to make this decision.

Thanks everyone. In the span of two days I had great news with my oldest getting his PhD and then the sadness of letting my doggy go.

In our marriage, we’ve had German Shepherds, a bloodhound, a pit bull rescue, and other assorted rescue dogs. Our practice is to eventually get another dog (my wife will say I found a dog and ask me what do I think).

Since I have had dog companionship since I was in diapers, another dog is always good.

We currently have two, one getting short in tooth and grey on the muzzle.

Our inclination has been to get another and pass the love on.

re: #97 Belafon

I have yet to make a Mastodon account.

First off, the servers with the cool kids won’t let me make an account.

Secondly, I still am put off by not having a Fediverse-wide username coordination.

Thirdly, I’ve yet to see why it will succeed in the long run. Unless a private entity thinks they can turn something into a profitable venture, why would a company put millions of dollars into making a Mastodon instance?

And it’s that latter issue which Meta is thinking of addressing, of course.

Facebook as it exists is clunky to use to quickly make and add to threads.

Instagram is Meta’s hot product but it’s about posting an image for comments. And right now my Facebook timeline is increasingly “friends” who post images at Instagram and then Facebook just timeline-manifests them on my Facebook feed.

If Meta can make a Mastodon instance with 100 million users it will take over the Fediverse.

Problems for many of us, though, are:
1) it’s still Meta (Facebook) and they are no more a moral high ground than Twitter;
2) if a Meta Mastodon system uses one’s Facebook username, then anonymity goes out the window.
3) If Meta Mastodon allows anonymity, then that decreases the ability of Meta to leverage Facebook and Instagram accounts to make Meta Mastodon instantaneously the dominant Mastodon instantiation.

I’m on mastodon.online. There are dozens of servers…it doesn’t matter which you get on. you click on ‘Federated’ and you get the firehose of toots from everywhere. Follow hashtags you are interested in to start, and befriend/follow people who aren’t idiots, and after a short time you’ll feel like you’re in a pretty cool community of people. Also, I highly recommend #SilentSunday as a hashtag to follow. It’ll flood your TL weekly, but with images from around the globe.

Wagner wasn’t contributing to defense very much: it’s not their thing, but they are/were in occupied Ukraine obviously. “Loyal” forces are supposed to be incorporated into the Russian forces, but that’s been a shitshow already.

Normie Russians are convinced this is some sort of maskirovka fake conflict. The ones who just listen to government propaganda of course never heard of any tension between the armed forces and Wagner, so this completely came out of nowhere. According to them this was supposed to cover for Putin signing new edicts to allow people to be arrested without charge for a month, or something like that.

You can try telling them that Putin wouldn’t have any problem with passing any new edits whatever the situation, and this fake conflict actually resulted in military targets being blown up in Russia, with Wagner shooting down multiple Russian helicopters and killing their pilots. They just shrug.

I can only guess, but my speculation is that Prigozhin cast around for support among the oligarchs/mafia bosses of Russia, found none, and realised that holding Moscow no more makes him Tsar than it did Napoleon. So I think Putin is good for now; we’ll see what happens if the Russian position in Ukraine collapses as I hope it will soon.

hi

It’s nice to have quiet weather for a change. Moony (clear) and 50°F / 10°Commie. The temperature will be in the upper seventies today, with only a slight chance of thunderstorms for my trip to Cheyenne later. (Then tomorrow I can finally get this tooth fixed.)

In today’s non-sequitur of apologetics, this one comes up a lot in real life. It is unfortunate pastors take advantage of their parishioners and arm them with bad arguments intentionally, so when the argument gets disassembled they go running back to the same church about the “mean atheists.” That is by design, to stop rational thinking about the question and keep the amateur apologist in the fold.

So this poor woman goes after a Christopher Hitchens quote. Hitchens was a lot of things (most notably a war-mongering neo-con ass) but his observations about bad arguments were such that he even has a logical razor named after him.

So the rebuttal she presents to this observation is a motte-and-bailey fallacy. No one denies faith exists, so she can’t argue against that at all. Instead she’ll strawman a position he didn’t take.

(I’ve had evangelists make this argument in person.)

Even if her unspoken position is correct (a god exists and it’s my particular version of a god), her answer doesn’t support that conclusion. No person’s faith in anything can ever be evidence for their audience.

I’m not on Twitter, but I know what would happen if I did respond: She would block me rather than evaluate in good faith [I did that on purpose] the illogic of her statement and quit using it. Apologists don’t give up their bad arguments because they aren’t arguing in good faith [I did that on purpose too], they are looking for someone who can’t evaluate the apologetic presented.

1980 Libertarian Party VP candidate David Koch (that guy) did the same thing as a campaign stunt, except in support of the Libertarian Party’s “sound money” plank he gave out privately-minted “gold dimes” to large campaign donors.

Those dimes today are actually worth something beyond the inclusion of gold as collector items.

El Niño May Break a Record and Reshape Weather around the Globe

Seven years ago an exceptionally strong El Niño took hold in the Pacific Ocean, triggering a cascade of damaging changes to the world’s weather. Indonesia was plunged into a deep drought that fueled exceptional wildfires, while heavy rains inundated villages and farmers’ fields in parts of the Horn of Africa. The event also helped make 2016 the planet’s hottest year on record.

Now El Niño is back. The odds are decent that this one will be another strong event, raising concerns of extreme weather in the coming months. And a strong El Niño is very likely to set another global heat record.

#Baptist
(WAPT-TV, Jackson, Miss., June 22, 2023)

Husband and wife hospitalized after hotel shooting in McComb

He posted a photograph of himself and his wife on Facebork along with their three children two days before, saying he might not be perfect but he’s a family man.

Both he and his wife are in the hospital. The children are in the custody of family services; they were not injured.

He is the pastor of Bright Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. He frequently posts on Faceborg, most often about personal growth, for example:

“People with small minds will keep you locked up into what can fit into their heads. The God I serve doesn’t have a limit, and I’m staying faithful because I know my cup shall run over.”

And the week prior to that, Danny posted on his wife’s birthday calling her “my queen” and “the woman that I love and owe my life to.”

He shot his wife and himself at the Hampton Inn (the same place he took the selfie of his family two days prior).

It says presidential records belong to the United States; Trump is only allowed to take his personal records. Tom Fitton fed Trump a false interpretation of the Judicial Watch v. NARA case, which held that no-one had standing to force NARA to seek custody of personal records of President Clinton.

Which Trump twisted in his mind into declaring that any document that came across his desk during his 4 years in office automatically became “his” and thus the NARA cannot request it back.

They’ll hear a variation of it, as his lawyers seem convinced that their best defense is arguing that the PRA only applies to documents of certain classification levels or contents, and that all other documents can be considered “personal” and thus his to keep as long as he likes.

Oh, and they also think that “WE NEEDED MORE TIME!” is also a viable part to that defense.

As if we didn’t know that already, Maggie…

A slight change in the small print in Donald Trump’s online disclosures reveals an increase in the money contributors have been donating to help him win the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential nomination is being shifted to help to pay his legal bills.

According to a report from the New York Times, the diversion of funds raises questions about the cash crunch the former president is facing with multiple indictments at the state and federal level with more expected to come.

As the Times’ Maggie Haberman and Shane Goldmacher wrote, the “diversion” of campaign cash to his Save America PAC — which is helping to pay his legal bills among other expenses — was done with little fanfare.

The report states, “When Mr. Trump kicked off his 2024 campaign in November, for every dollar raised online, 99 cents went to his campaign, and a penny went to Save America,” before adding, “But internet archival records show that sometime in February or March, he adjusted that split. Now his campaign’s share has been reduced to 90 percent of donations, and 10 percent goes to Save America.”

According to the report, that has meant that approximately $1.5 million was skimmed off to help with his legal woes that could have been used to boost his election prospects.

NTSB: Airline worker ‘ingested into’ plane engine at Texas airport

National Transportation Safety Board says Delta Air Lines flight 1111 was taxiing to its gate around 10:25 p.m. Friday night when an airline ground crew member somehow went into the plane’s engine.

This was unusual in that the plane was moving when the victim somehow got in front of the engine. Photos show a tarp over one engine and a Hazmat crew (not EMTs) from an environmental cleanup company arriving in a green truck. Later on, mechanics will open the engine and check for damage and further evidence. They will apparently just bag whatever they find and turn it over to the medical examiner.

That means he’s got a mistress on the side and when she has one of them OOPSIES he makes sure she can get an abortion.

And then he goes right back on the No Abortion, No Contraception No Siree ‘cause life’s too precious can’t you see?

And when some strange fruit is hanging from a tree?

Well..Chucky like a true radical Xtian ignores that…

It’s happened again.
NTSB: Airline worker ‘ingested into’ plane engine at Texas airport

This was unusual in that the plane was moving when the victim somehow got in front of the engine. Photos show a tarp over one engine and a Hazmat crew (not EMTs) from an environmental cleanup company arriving in a green truck. Later on, mechanics will open the engine and check for damage and further evidence. They will apparently just bag whatever they find and turn it over to the medical examiner.

Extraction crew members tend to have a macabre sense of humor.

Nancy Mace: ‘Obscene’ Democrats support a man who ‘lied’ and ‘betrayed his oath of office’

Guess who that is…

alternet.org

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) called Democrats “shameful” because they continue to support Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) after Republicans censured him.

During a Sunday interview on Fox News (WHERE ELSE?), Mace recalled how Democrats protested by chanting “shame” on the House floor after Schiff was censured for his role in the Russia election interference investigation.

Don’t forget folks that our Corporate Controlled Conservative Press repeatedly says that Nancy Mace is a “Moderate Republican”!

President Vladimir Putin looked into the abyss Saturday and blinked. After vowing revenge for what he called an ‘armed mutiny,’ he settled for a compromise.”

He didn’t really blink; the only thing Prigozhin got was a temporary extension to his life and nothing else. Putin can arrange Prigozhin’s demise at his leisure — and sooner rather than later. In a week, no one will be talking about this.

This is a horrible thing to say. You’re basically wishing that good and honest cancer doctors would have to spend extended time with Ralph. There are far more fitting ends such as getting ingested into a jet engine (see above)

Yes, it’s like a football sized semi-sourdough loaf. Made croutons for Caesar salad out of part of it, gave half the loaf to the neighbors. Still have enough for more croutons or good bread crumbs after it dries.

re: #141 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

[Embedded content]

So I made that simple argument (he doesn’t say faith doesn’t exist) for you. And all of the other responses were similar. No one found it convincing. She doesn’t have enough followers!
