Jimmy Fallon did a fun Taylor Swift bit a few weeks ago — he sent a camera crew out to the street to find tourist pairs of middle-aged fathers with teenage daughters, asked the fathers Taylor Swift questions and the daughters Travis Kelce questions. (spoiler — the daughters got more answers right. And they were all so cute rolling their eyes at how wrong their dads were.)

“It’s not the business of anyone but Kate Cox whether she’s pregnant or not, and it’s unbelievable how many non-medical people have now inserted themselves in her medical decisions including the indicted and impeached Attorney General of Texas and the Texas Supreme Court.

I don’t know if she can safely travel out of state, but I hope so. I hope she is able to get the care she needs elsewhere since it’s being denied to her by Texas officials who don’t care about her life.”

The problem is the many women who don’t have the resources to leave the state on a timely basis before their situation deteriorates. And of course, the women whose health prevents them from traveling but according to the state rules, they are not yet ill enough to qualify for whatever “exemption” the law has.

Because you can never be ill enough to satisfy a Evangelical pencil neck who is convinced that your health is the purview of a higher power. A pregnant woman can be discharging blood and green pus from every orifice, running a fever of 105.9, suffering organ failure, and hooked up to so many IVs that she’s inflated like a balloon…and there will some peckerhead who finished last in his law class who will tell the doctors that she’s not sick enough to qualify and if they touch her hoohahs then they’re all gonna fry.

Paxton let it slip the other day when firing off his little screed in response to the TRO being granted, that it’s all about precedent and the authoritarian principle that if you allow a single exception to their rules then the rules become invalid. They genuinely do believe that there is a conspiracy among the medical community to undermine their rule, that doctors will lie on the stand to gut the abortion ban by coming up with all sorts of excuses for why a woman has a medical need for an abortion. And so they have to break this woman and every one like her to scare doctors into enforcing their will.

Yeah, that’s the bit that’s so hilarious about the “Biden Crime Family,” that even if you believe the GQP are telling the truth about how much was made, it’s a pittance when spread across the years that it supposedly was taking place. Such as Comer’s latest “bombshell,” which works out to less than $10,000 but is being spun as a “stipend” by some Chinese conspiracy to influence Joe to do…what?

The whole BS argument is that Hunter was “influence-peddling,” that he was making money convincing foreign businesses and governments that he could get Joe to do things for them. But when you corner a Repub and ask them to name a single thing Joe did that can be connected to money he received from James or Hunter, you get a blank look and mumbling about how they can’t really name anything but they know the money was paid to Joe and that’s all that matters.

Actually good to have a drenching. After recoding 50 inches of rain through August, we’ve had only around 2 inches from September until today. Meanwhile, my alma mater hit the end of the line in the Division II playoffs - falling to Harding University. Still, finishing as one of the top 4 teams in that classification is a great run.

The war of attrition continues in Ukraine. I hope we don’t start sending “advisers.”

As Ukraine approaches its third year of war, those men are needed more than ever. The leaders are still pleading for more weapons and ammunition from the United States and Europe — even as signs of flagging support among those allies suggest that Ukraine may have to do more to arm itself. But even more than bullets, Ukraine needs fighters, leading to a search for new ways to mobilize the population and stronger measures against draft dodgers.

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion, men ages 18 to 60 were forbidden from leaving the country. Many bypass military service through the equivalent of medical disabilities, college deferments or family obligations. A father with three or more children is exempt, as are those who have family members already serving in the military.

Some of those seeking to escape hire guides to lead them through the mountains. Others make the risky trip alone. One of them, a 46-year-old man who lost his way last month, suffered severe frostbite and died soon after he was found. At least 25 men have drowned while crossing the Tysa River separating Ukraine from Moldova and Romania.

It’s been my belief all along that Putin is just planning on going at this forever, knowing that attrition will occur, and that the US will eventually give up.

The Trumpian Republicans have already sided with Putin.

No matter the losses by Russia, Putin doesn’t care. The conquest of Ukraine is so tied into the idea of Russian-ness for a segment of the Russian population, that Putin knows he can continue.

Respectfully disagree, the GQP and Russia are using each other to achieve their own goals. Russia’s initial goal was to take and hold Kyiv long enough that the civilian government went into exile and the West all but surrendered the whole of the country to Moscow. As they’ve failed to achieve that goal, they’ve downgraded to forcing the Westto sign off on their annexation of 1/3 of the country while backing away from Kyiv for fear of “provoking” further violence. Meanwhile, the GQP’s goal is largely the same as it was when the war began, which is to deal Biden a major foreign policy “loss” that they can campaign upon next year by accusing him of getting the US involved in a hopeless fight.

The union of nationalism with religion is part of the Putin doctrine.

That is also the doctrine of the Trumpian GOP.

Don’t underestimate just how similar Trump (and his cohorts) is to Putin, in worldviews at least.

They have always loved him: authoritarian, homophobic, kleptocratic, theocratic, xenophobic, militaristic, all the things they want to see in America.

Yes, I know it was restored, which is how I am reporting it!

No reason given for the outage.

Our electric lines are underground, mostly, in this area, so a pole going down in this neighborhood is not a thing.

re: #95 Patricia Kayden

Do the Russian people have a choice in this matter? Those who tried to protest have been jailed. Russia is not a democracy so Russians can’t be anything but apathetic.

It’s very difficult. The Soviet Union and Russia have spent a lot of energy making sure that uprisings don’t happen, by stifling any sort of organization outside of government control. So people can bitch and whine to a certain extent, but there’s very little place to go to organize anything more, because society is very atomized.

There’s also very cultivated and nasty nationalism and authoritarianism that is really pervasive, so the complaints about the war aren’t “the war is wrong” but “the war is being fought wrong”, and many useless appeals to Putin to fix it when he’s the cause of all of it.

The apathy goes both ways, however. When Wagner literally invaded and took over a good size and militarily important city (Rostov-na-Donu), the good people and soldiers from the area didn’t grab their guns and shovels and force the invaders out. They just shrugged, took some selfies, and sat on their hands waiting to see how things would shake out. So they don’t look like they’re ready to overthrow Putin any time soon, but are unlikely to give a shit if someone else does.

This sort of apathy didn’t occur in Ukraine, when Ukrainians fought to the death against their own invaders. That came as a shock to the Russians.

‘I could provide a list’: Jake Tapper busts JD Vance on GOP’s contraception opposition

CNN host Jake Tapper called out Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) on Sunday after he claimed that Republicans do not want to curb birth control rights for women.

“I also think we have to win the trust back of the American people, and one of the ways to do that is to be the truly pro-family party,” Vance told Tapper during a discussion about abortion.

“Is birth control part of that policy, empowering women to be able to make those decisions before they get pregnant?” Tapper asked.

“I don’t think that I know any Republican, at least not a Republican with a brain that’s trying to take those rights away from people, but I think it goes deeper than that,” Vance replied.

Tapper interrupted.

“I mean, I could provide a list for you if you wanted,” the CNN host said.

Well, okay,” Vance said, insisting he did not talk to those Republicans.

Palestinians are at a severe risk of starvation in Gaza due to lack of access to food, fuel and price gouging as Israel continues to bombard the territory, multiple aid groups warn.

Numerous aid groups are sounding the alarm at the hunger crisis in Gaza, just days after the United States used its veto power in the United Nations Security Council to block the passage of a resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire. The passage would have required Israel to halt its war against militant group Hamas in Gaza, which has also left thousands of Palestinians dead.

In addition to the frequent bombardments, there is a lack of food in the territory. The available food is also susceptible to price gouging in the territory, where some aid groups have reported one bag of flour costing up to $140.

The United Nations World Food Programme put out a report this month outlining the food situation in Gaza, finding that 97 percent of households in northern Gaza and 83 percent in southern Gaza have inadequate food consumption. Nine out of 10 people in northern Gaza and two in three people in southern Gaza reported spending at least one full day and night without food.

Overall, nearly 50 percent of people in northern Gaza are experiencing severe levels of hunger and nearly 40 percent in southern Gaza are reporting the same.
