latest Quinnipiac poll shows Bernie at 15% among Dems, +5 over any current candidate among Republicans.
Sure that’ll change among Repubs once the clown car population thins, but speaks to the idea that Bernie isn’t being taken seriously by the same media that follows Cruz, Rand, Fiorina, et. al. around.

It is quite amazing that one man that subscribes to a politics that has been tried and tested successfully in Europe is basically referred to as a kook, while right-libertarians like Rand Paul, who have yet to have a single nation on earth actually be willing to take on the experiment, and full on falangists like Santorum who’s politics(right wing Catholicism) have been tested in Europe and South America to variously disastrous results receive nothing but respect from our “liberal media”.
End run-on sentence.
Well at least Santorum is willing to speak of the plight of labor in the United States. At least he isn’t a market and “free-trade” fanatic.

I really take issue with the one hack who called him “the most unusual candidate in a long time.” The guy’s been a mayor, House member, and now Senator. It’s true he’s a self described socialist but he doesn’t believe in cuckoo conspiracy shit. He’s just an unabashed lefty. That doesn’t make him any different from the many “true conservatives” who constantly vie for the Republican nomination. I like Sanders quite a bit. I really hope he can positively influence the debate and I think he will.
7 | Targetpractice May 30, 2015 11:46:48am |
While I think Jon has a great point about how we’ve gotten used to the idea of focus-tested and polished politicians, I think he sorta missed the bigger picture, which is the media’s effort to portray Sanders as a “loony” for the purposes of treating the things he has to talk about as “out there.” In the same week as the press was downplaying Sanders and acting like he was the second-coming of Vladimir Lenin, you had David Brooks on air sporting wood over George Pataki joining the race as a “moderate” Republican and calling Scott Walker and Marco Rubio “working class politicians.”
The “liberal media” seems to be settling on a narrative: If you like what Sanders has to say, you’re a socialist nutjob. But if you like what Scott Walker has to say, then you’re a good, well-balanced centrist who’s focused on what matters to the workin’ man.

On the other hand, a real primary tends to pull a candidate in the direction of their party base, which is leftwards for Democrats. Which means Hillary will likely have to do a “Race to the Center” in the spring of 2016. Her husband ran that race well, though no one watching him as he did it; Ross Perot being all the rage in the late spring of 1992.

Damned good post. But yeah the media is a big part of the problem here. They like to create labels. It’s how Santorum even though he mocked the president for wanting higher education for all American children is made out to be a populist champion of working class people. How the aforementioned Walker who is nothing but a puppet of the Kochs is made out to be a champion of the working class. And I’m sure if it ever came down to Bush and Sanders in a GE, the media would try to paint Bush as a more regular guy even though Bernie’s upbringing has much more in common with the average American than Jeb whose political pedigree is amazing. But because Bernie’s an open socialist with a thick Brooklyn accent, he’s made out to be some oddity.

Shrug, your party’s candidates have been doing that for some time now. Hillary won’t have to be repudiating herself the way Romney and to a smaller extent McCain did. And be well to be aware she’s going to have an opponent from the right if Webb runs too. Not sure if he’s still considering a run though.

Thing is, the center is not where it was in 1992. Socially, Hillary can take a pretty far lean into the “left” and still be close enough to the center to comfortably make the trip back. The GOP, meanwhile, is so far over the right edge that any run back to the center is obvious pandering.

I like a lot of what BS (heh) is saying, but most of his appeal appears so far to be to the white hip crowd.
You can’t conflate the concerns of the white, educated middle class with those of poverty, of Black concerns, Immigrants, and the problems therein. It’s a different level of discourse. Not saying that the latter groups are not concerned with the issues he’s raising, but jobs and income concerns are very real when you’re trying to just survive.
It’s the economy, stupid, and specifically for working families who really are struggling now.

I think you’re being unfair to him. I think he focuses on income inequality and poverty more than Clinton or O’Malley have. It’s true that the white educated middle class will probably be where he gets much of his support from but I really strongly disagree with you that he doesn’t speak to the concerns of racial minorities and poor people. I think he’s a much more credible voice on that subject given that he himself grew up a poor son of immigrants.

And I don’t think this speaks specifically to those, either. There are 10s of millions of people in this country who by any indicator would not be considered “middle class”.
He should elaborate on this, for instance: “…children go hungry, veterans sleep out on the streets and senior citizens cannot afford their prescription drugs…”
Other than that, nothing about what I mentioned on his website.

Do not forget that FOX has dragged the Overton window so far to the right that Hillary can race to the Left drastically and _Still_ be more right wing than Nixon was economically and Eisenhower was socially.
Only with Bernie in will we have any chance to hear real ideas about how to combat the oligarchy and falangist darlings of the radically reactionary far far far right who run as “conservatives”. Burke would laugh in the face of Walker - someone who couldn’t even manage what Palin did in graduating from college - who does nothing but what he’s told to by his bosses in Kansas and lies like a rug every day of the week. Bernie, at least, presents the hope of a new day rising out of the ongoing disaster for the middle class that has been happening since 1980 with the election of the worst President in American History.

I did look at his presidential candidacy website and I agree he could elaborate more on this but he did just launch his candidacy and I found plenty on his Senate website of him talking about these issues. On his front page no less is a video of him talking about making tuition affordable to all students. Now I agree with you he could work on communicating himself better but I really disagree that he’s only standing for issues that aren’t a concern to working class, racial minorities, and immigrants. Sanctity of Marriage rally today drew vocal supporters of biblically-defined marriage

Dr. Tom Ford, a spokesperson for Alabama For Marriage, traveled from Montgomery with members of his family.
“Marriage is between a man and a woman,” said Ford. “To call it anything else is to call a circle a square.”
He said one problem was that Christians themselves have been desecrating the institution of marriage and turning away from traditional gender roles and gender identity.
“We’re equal, but we’re not the same,” he said.
“If we want to see our nation blessed, we have to obey God and do what’s right in his eyes,” said Ford’s daughter, Maggie, 17, who attended the rally.

Me? I’m leaning toward The Conversation - it’s certainly Francis Ford Coppola’s best film. But Hackman’s performance in that film was a tour de force performance, a masterpiece of restraint, with a strong supporting cast including the late John Cazale (who left us too soon) and Harrison Ford.

The Godfather I/II are extraordinary films, no doubt about it, but I’d rank The Conversation as their equal. It’s very underrated, and I can’t help but think that such a film would likely not be made today.
Not enough explosions, boobs, CGI sharks with chainsaws or something like that. Just a quiet little film about guilt and paranoia.

Public health officials and researchers have paid considerable attention to the specific health issues of women and minorities, and justifiably so.
I believe, howver, that President Obama should now order the CDC to initiate a crash, Manhattan Project style program to investigate and eradicate two deadly but apparently related epidemics that have raged unchecked through large segments of the white population in recent years:
-The catastrophic decline in penis size that has caused millions of confused, humiliated, suffering men to seek compensation in firearms, giant 4x4 pickups, and American Sniper dress-up games.
-The outbreak of national amnesia that has caused a similar, indeed closely congruent, segment to forget that presidential executive orders, military exercises, and government ammunition purchases all occurred under previous presidents and do not necessarily represent anything new and sinister.
Some preliminary research suggests that these ghastly afflictions may be behavior-driven, since they seem to be much less common among better educated and more stable elements of the affected demographic.

There seems to be the infinitely growing strain in America that literally believes that there is absolutely no safety without guns, and if someplace or someone doesn’t have a gun present at all times, it’s asking for murderous intentions descending upon them at any moment. That’s what you see when you have gun-nuts proclaim gun-free zones as ‘death zones’ and act like they’re the absolute proof that anyone who supports gun-control just wants people culled and killed because they hate god and America and all things good.
The problem is that these people are WINNING, and it’s not even close. Gun Control is a dead issue for at least a generation, and it fucking depresses me. It feels like any attempt to bring up the insanity of our gun culture and even tepid suggestions for regulation simply ends up with the NRA and gun nuts winning more and more and even more because America doesn’t want to hear it, that most of America seems to literally believe the slippery slope far as gun control and HOLY SHIT, IT”S THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP THE DIRTY LIBBY LIBS FROM SLAUGHTERING US WITH THEIR THUG PATROLS.
