Concerning, to say the least. Brest is only about 10 miles (17 km) from the Polish border with Belarus.
NEW: Russia has assembled troops, armor, artillery, and more than 50 heavy equipment transporters a training area in Brest, near the Polish border.
Russia has also added more equipment at a nearby railyard in Belarus.

Just reading the front page along feels like reading Soviet-era Pravda. Did you know that the Euromaiden revolution was actually a CIA-backed coup to remove the popular pro-Russian government in favor of a pro-US puppet? Or that Vlad had no choice but to invade now, as the US is totally planning to invade Russia by way of forcing Ukraine into NATO membership? Guessing by the posts, apparently his dick also must be more addictive than crack and heroin combined, from how hard they’re slobbering all over it.

so far left that they rationalize their support for right-wing authoritarian dictators as being “anticapitalist”, so “anti-Zionist” that they are more anti-Semitic than the Nazis.
From all accounts, Russia is having a hell of a time executing that plan to just roll over the Ukrainian military and plant their flag. Even if only half the reports are accurate, they’ve lost several aircraft and tanks, they’ve had troops captured or deserted, and they’ve failed to take and hold vital objectives if they wanted a swift end to things. And this is just the invasion portion, we haven’t even begun the long slog that will be the inevitable occupation.
Well now, isn’t this interesting?

I loved my mother dearly, but my dad’s death affected me more mentally, probably because I’d been hanging out with him, looking after him, for quite some time. Here in Czech Republic, there’s a bank run on Sberbank underway, as jittery Czech accountholders are nervous that upcoming sanctions may force Sberbank out of the EU.
The Russo-Ukrainian war forced the Czech clients of Sberbank to act. They are starting to leave her and on Friday she even lost her internet banking.
Private individuals, companies and non-profit organizations have accounts with the Russian-connected Sberbank. Now they are distancing themselves from it due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Clients are cancelling their accounts with Sberbank and transferring to other companies. “We withdraw money from accounts with Sberbank and cancel it,” said the governor of the South Moravian Region, Jan Grolich, on Twitter.
“I am waiting here to transfer the money to another account, because the bank has lost its internet banking today. I’m worried about my money, I’m afraid they’re not safe here, “said one of the bank’s clients.
Another client in the approximately 30-meter queue is waiting to withdraw cash from his savings account. “I’m waiting for a cash withdrawal. I have to transfer it to another bank because I can’t leave it at home under the mattress. The fall of internet banking has not brought me here, I want cash withdrawals because I am worried that no financial orders done through Sberbank will work in the coming days. I no longer trust them”, the client said.
“We are afraid they will have no more cash for us. We’ve been waiting here for over an hour. I was here yesterday and they warned me that cash withdrawals can be a problem”, added another client waiting for cash deposited in the bank.

This is going to sound really cynical, but just be prepared for him to turn out to be the sane one when it comes to probate. I mean, I know movies make it look like people only fight over big stuff, like who’s getting money and how much, but in reality, the thing that caused us immediate tension was that my dad had designated my mom as the personal rep for the estate, and she pre-deceased him by some 20 years, so we had to spend the first month sweating that the son-of-a-bitch rotten lawyer that everyone hated might help himself to 10-15% of the estate in order to fulfill that function. I hated the guy, and he apparently hated me, but for some reason, he just took a real shine to my older sister and he allowed her to be the personal rep. He died an apparently horrible death roughly six months after the estate settled, so, I guess no comment on that one.
I am concerned about what an occupied Ukraine will look like if partisan warfare spreads. It could get really ugly, especially as it will likely attract foreign mercenaries.
When Ukraine became independent, there was discussion of erecting a monument to the partisan leader Stepan Bandera, who fought against both the German and Russian occupiers during and after WW2.
Someone suggested that he be shown holding a crucifix in one and and in the other, a pitchfork with a dead Russian hanging from it. “Yes,” added a commentator, “and every day we change it out for a new dead Russian!”

Putin is much more than a mere genocidal maniac. Based on his rhetoric and now his actions he is a xenophobic threat to the entire world and I’m sure those around him used to wealth and power who thought he could be contained are now convinced the monster is loose and cannot be re-chained again. Putin’s end will come soon. Perhaps not soon enough for the majority of Russians, let alone Ukraine. The longer the invasion of Ukraine goes without a clear Russian win, the worse it gets for Putin and the more likely it becomes that the military sees this as a folly.

I’m worried for zelensky and family. I understand the rationale behind staying in the capitol, but the government needs to continue to function, even if it has to be a shadow government from elsewhere. Granted, Zelensky may be calculating that if he’s captured and executed, it might be the only way to force NATO to recover Ukraine from the Russians, but I think it would still work better for Ukraine if he continues to be the head of a government in exile, inspiring fighters and preventing Russia from being able to install a “legitimate” successor.
re: #77 Hecuba’s daughter

There’s long been talk that Beria may have killed Stalin.
Beria would’ve known damn well that another purge was coming (the “Doctor’s Plot”) and he certainly remembered the fate of his predecessors, Yogoda and Yezhov. Beria could’ve easily obtained poison - the most commonly mentioned is warfarin - and he and Stalin would hang out quite frequently.
After the deaths of both Stalin and Beria, there was Kremlin gossip that Beria had a hand in Stalin’s demise. Now to be fair, Stalin was no spring chicken and had been chain-smoking for the better part of six decades. Stalin’s official cause of death was a massive cerebral hemorrhage, as per the autopsy.
Of course, there’s no proof (to the best of my knowledge) that Stalin was poisoned by a fearful Lavrenty Beria, worried that Stalin was gonna purge him next (Stalin’s motto being “stone dead hath no fellow”…another way of saying “dead men tell no tales”). And if proof someday did emerge, given Beria’s monstrous nature, I wouldn’t be at all surprised.

For me, it’s a tough call. Maybe if Russian soldiers started committing mass atrocities against the civilian population, that might be enough to spark a NATO intervention in Ukraine. As for the risk of nuclear war, we’ve been much closer to the brink than this. Hell, the Cuban Missile Crisis, for example. The question is that delicate game of chicken: Say we intervened - how far could we push Russia out of Ukraine before the red balloon goes up?
Personally, I say the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, plus Crimea. That’s Putin’s absolute red line. He would go nuclear rather than lose Crimea.

Just a little update on the Sberbank situation I posted earlier, Sberbank Czech Republic closed all of its branches in the country at 2 pm local time, no reason was given. No word yet either on when they’ll reopen.
There’s also a boycott of all Russian services underway here in Czech Republic as protest against Russia’s illegal war and occupation against Ukraine.

I say help Ukraine as much as we can to fight for themselves. Putin has just shown he isn’t a rational actor, and he has the biggest nuclear weapons arsenal in the world, so we can’t make assumptions for what his red line for the use of nukes would be if NATO forces engaged Russians in Ukraine. As Iraqis showed us, a committed insurgency can keep large regular army units tied up for years to come, and send a lot of Russians home in body bags with crude but effective weapons.

we have ways of avoiding that. biden can have a very private talk with putin, indicating that NATO will play with sandbox rules in Ukraine: everything will be contained in Ukraine, we won’t spill over into Russian territory. Russia can bring as many troops as it wants into the Ukraine conflict and that will be fine. We won’t attack Russian forces outside the Ukraine zone. Hell, we did it in Korea and Vietnam.

And what makes you think Putin is willing to play by rules made in D.C.? If this Ukraine adventure ends in rapid, humiliating defeat for Russia, Putin is as good as dead, and he is entirely likely to be willing to take the entire world with him.

Remember though, the Russian military is notorious for carrying out atrocities against civilian populations. I can all too easily imagine them pulling a modern-day Lidice Massacre as reprisal measures.
Then the question becomes, do we - as NATO - sit back while Russian soldiers gun down entire villages, men, women and children, and wag our finger at Putin, telling him to stop being such a naughty boy?
I have little doubt whatsoever that the Russian military will carry out atrocities against Ukrainian civilians.

Maybe so. But there are very close ties between Ukrainians and Russians, lots of them have relatives in Ukraine, and there is a good chance they will refuse such orders. I thought the Red Army would massacre the protestors in Moscow in 1991, but they didn’t, and the coup failed. In any event, a global nuclear holocaust is too great a risk to take; Biden’s first duty is the defense of the U.S.

yes, finnish consequences would be 1) a whole shit ton of NATO forces would be happy to bolster its defenses; and 2)Russia would cut off political ties, which probably aren’t going to amount to much anyway considering the sanctions on Russia aren’t coming off anytime soon.

Important considerations mitigating against NATO intervention into Ukraine, besides the risk of nuclear war, are that first, I doubt Russia has the capacity to sustain a long term military occupation of Ukraine, so this adventure is likely to fail if we just give it time. Second, a lot of Russians are opposing this war and its possible that domestic opposition could become a serious problem for Putin. If NATO intervenes, it could rally Russians around the flag. Third, most of the world is opposing this blatantly illegal imperialist attack; if we widen the conflict to make it NATO v. Russia, suddenly its Russia that looks like the victim of Western imperialists, at least in some places, such as China. I am very confident that NATO forces are not going to enter Ukraine to fight the Russian army.

Yes, if they have the will to. US resources are essentially limitless, and yet Iraqi and Afghan insurgents eventually rendered our occupation untenable. Russia’s resources are vastly more limited than ours, and this war is already unpopular in Russia.

Ukraine. Russia doesn’t have the capacity to invade any other country while most of its army is tied down in Ukraine. re: #146 No Malarkey!
That is exactly what I think is going to happen, which is why I was frankly surprised that Putin was willing to gamble on a reckless full scale invasion of Ukraine, instead of a limited occupation of the separatist regions.
I wonder if Putin over-estimated how much help his western fifth column would be, that massive pro-Russian demonstrations and political action would force western governments to withdraw their support for Ukraine or even advise immediate surrender. They have certainly paid a lot of attention to Tucker Carlson and similar tools. How could the Russians miscalculate so badly when they have conducted the most successful propaganda and subversion campaign in history during the last few years? I think their efforts succeeded only because they had such a vast supply of willing accomplices in the corrupt Republican party and its European analogs. They are not really especially good at it, as shown by their support for the farcical California and Texas secession movements.

re: #172 Jay C
Kinda what I thought. Is Judge Jackson’s seat senior to the one Childs currently occupies, or would it be a “sideways promotion”?
per wiki:
en.wikipedia.org
In January 2021, U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn sent a letter to President Biden’s transition team encouraging Biden to nominate Childs to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.[27] On December 23, 2021, Biden announced Childs as his nominee for that court,[28] and her nomination was sent to the Senate on January 10. Childs’s nomination is pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.[27] The seat had been vacated by Judge David S. Tatel, who will assume senior status upon confirmation of a successor.[29]
On January 28, 2022, the White House stated that Childs was among those being considered for nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, to fill the seat that will be left vacant after Justice Stephen Breyer’s retirement.[30][31] Two days later, one of her home-state U.S. senators, Republican Lindsey Graham, voiced his support for her potential nomination.[32] Childs’ surprising ascent from district court judge to supreme court finalist can also be attributed to Jim Clyburn, the number 3 Democrat in the house who has been lobbying Biden to nominate Childs notwithstanding concerns over Childs’ conservative record as a judge and trial lawyer.[33]
Labor rights groups have voiced their displeasure with Childs’ consideration for the U.S. Supreme Court given her private sector experience working at a law firm many considered to be an “anti-union” law firm.[34]
ETA: 11th Appellate Circuit is definitely a promotion.from district court judge. Any appellate seat would be, but especially the 11th.

We were dealing with Khrushchev then and not Putin. Khrushchev was a thoroughly rational actor and not a reckless paranoid planning to restore a lost empire.

Minor points: it was May, 1915, and the Lusitania was a British, not an American vessel, and thus somewhat of a vaguely “legitimate” target. Especially as it was suspected (and later confirmed) that she was, indeed, carrying some armaments. Not that most U-boat captains would have cared anyway…

Sorry, you’re right on the date. And yes, while the RMS Lusitania was a British vessel (which I knew), the presence of Americans on board the ship, as well as the secret nature of the armaments it was carrying (by necessity), caused widespread outrage in the States.

Biden: We’re not supplying weapons to Ukraine at this moment. But we are supplying them to Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Estonia.
Biden: And what they do with them, well…you’re gonna have to ask them. We’re not their boss.
Russia done gone and fucked up. The Mrs… who is far more dovish than I am, is calling for hellfire to rain down on Putin’s regime and the Russian military and that the US and NATO should do more than issue platitudes, sanctions, and get into the fight even if it means a wider conflict.
I am the one trying to talk her down from what could turn into a world war because Putin thinks Russian imperialism is his manifest destiny and that Ukraine isn’t a legitimate sovereign nation.

Wounded Russian soldiers needing care on top of an exhausted health care delivery infrastructure ruined by covid.
Yeah, that’ll really work out well for those who are injured in Putin’s quest to build a new Russian empire.

What’s Russia’s break even point on oil production?
keep in mind, 70 dollar oil for Russia isn’t the same as 70 dollar oil for Exxon. Exxon is high-tech and mostly corruption-free, except the bribes I assume they pay in places like Nigeria to keep the workers happy and local governments off their backs. For Russia, they have the issue of what I’d guess is crummy infrastructure in the oil industry, combined with oligarchs raking off their cuts, as well as local governments raking off theirs, and Putin ultimately racking off his. I’d guess that Putin really needs oil at least at 100 to keep everybody swimming. At 70, I’d bet they’re all mostly just breaking even.
And that means any additional jolts at all will tend to do real damage.
CPAC now stands for Cluster of Putin’s Ass Clowns.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) objected to the timing of President Biden’s announcement of a Supreme Court nominee on Friday, the HuffPost reports.Said Blackburn: “President Biden’s announcement just days after an unprovoked full scale invasion by Russia is extremely inappropriate. Once again, Biden is putting the demands of the radical progressive left ahead of what is best for our nation.”

Yep, and I think he wasn’t expecting this. He probably figured it’d be another Crimea cakewalk, where the world shakes their heads in disappointment, but other than that, it’s business as usual.
Now he’s getting sanctioned up the wazoo, it’s looking like Ukraine may end up being a tougher nut to crack then he’d anticipated, and if Finland (at least) did end up throwing in their lot with NATO, all he will have succeeded in doing is….getting a lot of soldiers killed, expending God knows how much money on a ridiculous military adventure and - ironically - expanded NATO by one country.
Good job, Putin.

Look, as soon as he made that speech about the Ukraine’s political and historical viability, it was clear that he was going to go whole hog. He is not finessing, he falling back on intimidation and threat.
He also made it clear that all the former Soviet Republics were Russia’s sphere of influence and that he saw any western involvement in them as a provocation - and now he is done being provoked.

What’s Russia’s break even point on oil production?
Their production costs are in the low to high $40 range, depending on whether on or offshore. I think that they need oil at around 70 to not run deficits.

Dammit, I wish we could pressure the Saudis and their pals to get oil down to about $15/barrel. Keep that price there for the next 12 to 18 months.
Not enough oil in the world for that. OPEC doesn’t have much excess capacity left. If we allowed Iran to pump and sell all they can then we’d make a dent. But, if Russia decided to take half their production offline, there just wouldn’t be enough oil left to meet supply.

It’s not just the ability to pump oil out of the ground, but to refine it into gasoline and other fuels. There’s some additional capacity there, but not enough to truly dent the price of oil. OPEC has cut production precisely to keep prices artificially high. This maximizes profits and the markets spiked above that thanks to the Russian invasion. US continues with record production and is essentially energy independent, but the price of oil doesn’t budge because the market is global.
Want to fundamentally change the price of oil and its effect on the global economy? Get off fossil fuels as a cornerstone of energy production, transport, and product manufacturing.

Russia’s Assault on Ukraine Has a Crusader Element
A religious historian breaks down the Orthodox Christian aspect to Putin’s calculations.
esquire.com
Butler Bass goes on to an account of the historic role that Ukraine played in the formation both of the Russian state and the effect that the split between Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox churches have played in that history. And this is not ancient history, either.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, Ukraine had several different Orthodox churches, only one of which was in close relationship to Moscow. In 2018, two of those Ukrainian churches and some of the Moscow-leaning Orthodox parishes joined in a union and created a newly unified Orthodox Church of Ukraine, a fully independent national ecclesial body under no control from Moscow, with its head in the ancient seat of Orthodoxy in Kyiv.
Putin and the Moscow Russian Orthodox church authorities protested. They’ve been claiming the 1,000 years of Kyiv Christianity as its own — basically appropriating Ukraine’s church history — to the point of erecting a gigantic (and controversial) statue of St. Vladimir outside of the Kremlin.…
Just what this nightmare needs: the influence of a 13th-century religious conflict.
re: #316 Rightwingconspirator

For sure. A lot of US production will come back online. But it’ll still amount to under 1m barrels per day extra. Nigeria and Angola are actually not meeting their OPEC quota, probably due to decaying infrastructure.
Maybe Putin is seeing the writing on the wall with the electric car revolution. By far the largest use of petroleum products is for transportation. As the world goes more electric, Russia and OPEC will be done.
Anyway Newsweek used to publish good work and it’s sad to see it descend to Fascist Highlights.

The same oil companies are sitting on tons of oil leases without developing them precisely because the costs are far higher than it takes to develop and extract the oil and gas from them.
The breakeven point isn’t there - and may never be there. But these same energy companies are more than happy to rack up record profits because global oil prices remain high because OPEC cuts supply and keeps oil artificially high during the pandemic, and then keeps them high as the demand bounces back.
So of course Pence is trying to show that he remains a know nothing with no clue how anything actually works.
Gas prices have risen across the Country because of this Administration’s war on energy—shutting down the Keystone Pipeline, shutting down oil and gas leases in this Country—while they were incomprehensibly green-lighting the Nord Stream 2 deal for the Russians. pic.twitter.com/gMxrnnLf19
— Mike Pence (@Mike_Pence) February 25, 2022
Oil companies are sitting on thousands of leases for which they are doing nothing because oil prices aren’t high enough to warrant taking action. The cost to develop those leases is higher than what it takes to extract oil/gas.

These were super-hardcore pro-Kremlin disinformation websites, all primary sources of the vast majority of Russian disinfo circulating in the country.
