Some More News: Moral Panics and How to Spot Them

Politics • Views: 18,423

Hi. In today’s episode, we look at the similar patterns followed by nearly all moral panics, whether they’re about teenagers eating Tide Pods or nonsense stories about litter boxes in school restrooms. These moral panics may seem silly, but they have very real and dangerous consequences for marginalized groups.

Amazon thought Alexa would be the next iPhone. Turns out it’s a ‘glorified clock radio.’

Amazon’s Alexa was Jeff Bezos’ pet project; now it’s a target for the company’s cost-cutting.

Insider reported the Amazon division that built Alexa is on track to lose $10 billion this year.

Voice assistants were supposed to be revolutionary, but no one’s figured out how to make them profitable.

If you can’t charge for it and you can’t sell ads on it, where are you going to make money.

I do regret that they’re cutting it, even if I don’t use Alexa. It’s R&D, which is not going to be profitable, but it’s where a lot of advancements are made.

I still consider that one of the things that has hurt the US is when AT&T required Bell Labs to make a profit.

They were hoping most of us would routinely use Alexa to order shit off Amazon. Didn’t exactly work out that way.

It’s unfortunate, really. The virtual assistants have many good uses, but pretty much none of those uses are profitable. Apple can keep rolling with Siri because Siri was never meant to be a huge moneymaker.

Mrs. Fish finally gets a long-awaited call… from an unexpected source. A couple of years ago, one of the neighbors up the block was sitting outside with her dogs. We knew these dogs; we’d walked by that house many times, and seen the woman’s husband sitting out there with those same dogs. We had never seen her, though. We asked to approach, and the dogs let us come up, and we started talking to her. Turns out, the old goat was a royal dickwad, and had been abusive to her; so she kicked his ass out, and kept the dogs. Mrs. Fish left her number and told her to ask if she ever needed help with anything. Well, today’s the day. She’s a couple of years older now, since last we spoke, and she’s been having problems with falling when she goes to collect her mail. So she asked Mrs. Fish if she could come and get it for her, and she agreed, since she already leaves the house most days in the afternoons to go and get our son from school. The easiest way to show you love God isn’t to be a sanctimonious asshole to people you don’t know, it’s to be kind to the little old lady on the corner who doesn’t have anyone left to rely on.

The film was inspired by an actual event; in 1985, a 175-pound black bear ate a duffel bag of cocaine that had been tossed out of an airplane. Of course, the unfortunate ursine promptly died. He is, however, on display at the Kentucky Fun Mall in Lexington.

This was an attempt from me.

medium.com

It’s really quite simple: Join any server, set up your profile (say who you are, please), and start looking for folks to follow: search for friends and follow whom they follow, or click on the local (your server) or federated (every server) timeline to see who’s strolling by the front porch, then follow hashtags to interesting conversations and people. A few tips from my vast experience of days: Go to the settings and switch to light mode (really, it makes a difference; it’s not just my dark-mode phobia) and enable the advanced web interface (it’s like Tweetdeck). Boost posts you like (no quote tweets here). Use the verb “to toot” at your option. If it slows down for a bit, just remember Twitter’s Fail Whale of yore, know that your server is run by volunteers (led by the amazing Eugen Rochko), and chill; it’ll speed up speedily.

There are more than 3,000 Mastodon servers, all built on and connected via the ActivityPub protocol. There are also related services you can connect to (e.g., Pixelfed, an Instagram that doesn’t Zuck). You may follow folks from any server, so where you start isn’t all that important. Later, if you want, you can move yourself to another server (you’ll keep your followers but lose your posts).

Here’s the most important thing about this open architecture: No one owns it. Musk can’t buy it (not that he can afford to buy a bagel anymore). I predict this will give censorious and authoritarian governments fits when they realize that a federated, distributed conversation is impossible to control (just as the printing press was; I have a book about that coming out soon). **That immunity from control is a reason to love it — and also to be concerned, for there is no central authority to verify identity or kill bad accounts.**

Unlike with the Holocaust, the question of whether the Holodomor falls under the UN definition of genocide is wide open among the historians specializing in the famine, due to the vagueness of evidence about the Soviet intent (and specific intent plays the key role in whether something is genocide or some other type of mass murder under the official definition; for example, if the aim is to suppress a political or a social group, the number of victims could be in the hundreds of millions and it might still not be a genocide ). Numerous mainstream historians have rejected the idea, including Robert Conquest, who first popularized the topic in the West.

Parliaments playing historians is a bad idea.

The UN playing a moral gatekeeper to what is a genocide is also a bad idea.

The UN’s definition of genocide from the Genocide Convention, includes mass murder in an intent to destroy national, ethnic, religous, or ethnic groups, but does not include attempts to destroy a “class” group — i.e, Kulak’s, or a “political group”. That was done to get the Soviets on board.

Rafael Lemkin, who authored the UN definition of genocide, himselfn considered the Holodomor to be a genocide.

Of course, if you redefine an ethnic group as a class group, by the narrow definition, several groups of deliberate mass murders (for example the murder of 1 million ethnic-Chinese Indonesians (in the guise of “anti-Communism”) around Suharto’s rise to power, Cambodia’s purge of pretty much anyone who was theoretially an intellectual, the Holodomor against Ukrainians declaring them to be Kulak’s, don’t count as genocide.

Jeez Louise! Is Kevin McCarthy really that big of an imbecile, or does he just like to play one on the Internet?
Leaving railroad wages/benefits/conditions up to the “private sector” to set (preferably unilaterally and unregulated) is why there’s a strike threatened in the first place: In pursuit of “efficiency” (i.e. corporate profits), said “private sector” would be only too willing to force their workers to accept sub-starvation wages, give them no benefits whatsoever, and work them every hour they can wring from them until they drop; and then fire them and toss them out on the street.
Just because railroads are a 19th-Century technology is no excuse to impose 19th-Century labor standards. Unless you’re a Republican, of course….

I mostly agree. Myself, I would prefer the definition to be expanded or to be abandoned in favor of using the term “democide”. I don’t see how mass murdering “peasants” or “gays” is better than mass murdering “Jews” or “Russians”. That said, while the def is as it is, “forcing” historical events to conform to the definition seems like a poor idea to me.

I am currently rereading the Tiffany Aching sub-series of the Prachett Discworld books. And a big key to the services that witches provide there is essentially that. They watch out for those that need that extra bit of help. (There is a lot more to it, but they are essentially an important rural community service in those books.)

Terry Pratchett’s witches are the best. By my lights, between them and Diane Duane’s “Young Wizards” series, we have a complete magic primer for our kids and that neo-Edwardian prep school-plus-magic-wands franchise can go inflict itself on itself. ;)

“First Sight means you can see what really is there, and Second Thoughts mean thinking about what you are thinking. And in Tiffany’s case, there were sometimes Third Thoughts and Fourth Thoughts although these…sometimes led her to walk into doors.”

Twitter’s ad revenue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa is down 15% in 2022, and weekly advertising bookings in the region are down a stunning 49%, according to internal company discussions reviewed by the Platformer newsletter. That would be bad news any time, but it’s disastrous during the Black Friday shopping season, the most profitable time of year for ad companies by far. The lost opportunity is even worse considering the World Cup is on, another factor that should drives up ad sales. One former Twitter executive told Platformer the situation is “catastrophic.”

New reports suggest that Twitter’s mass layoffs and resignations hit critical ad technology teams. Musk wants to change Twitter’s business model through schemes like subscription fees for verified accounts, but any significant revenue from that program is a long way off. In the meantime, advertising is essentially the only way Twitter makes money, and Musk is flailing to turn the company’s ad problems around. So far those efforts have failed, and the layoffs to the metrics teams could make the platform even less appealing to advertisers going forward.

Staffing losses are particularly steep among Twitter’s measurement and analytics teams, according to sources who spoke with Ad Age. These personnel run absolutely essential advertising technology. That includes systems that calculate how well ad campaigns are working and tools that ensure brand safety, the industry term for checking to make sure that ads aren’t running next to offensive or otherwise damaging content. According to Ad Age:

“The Audience Insights unit, which was heavy with technical talent and looked at conversation volume and trends and worked with Twitter sales and marketing teams, lost 70% of its staff,” the source said.

only a bigger fucking idiot would vote for someone that needs a chaperone to not eat dinner with fucking nazis.

edit. added more fucks.

Whenever fucking nazis are mentioned, you simply cannot go overboard with them.

Whenever the fucking TFG is mentioned, again, fuck away.

When you have fucking nazis and fucking TFG together, the number of fucks can achieve astronomical proportions which then collapse into a massive black hole of fucks.

My youngest brother is both a Mormon and a Trumpster. I have asked him how he can align himself with people who think his religion is a perverted cult, and whose not-too-distant predecessors lynched its founder. His answers are tu quoque (“Liberals hate us too!) and some kind of gibberish about liberalism being a greater threat. I ran down a list of pogroms and religious wars between branches of Christianity, he says that’s all in the past. *sigh*

“liberals hate me so i must vote for x” says all you need to know
it’s nonsensical
because they got nothing logical or substantive - or even arguable

when it comes down to it, I don’t care about your politics or your political affiliations. It’s not your position or who you vote for. I care how you decide who to vote for.

how you develop that position, how you make your evaluations and decisions. The process - the critical thinking, the info gathering, acceptance of what you hear and see, that is more of a window on who you are (and aren’t) than anything else.

If you come to it rationally, with something you can support, then fine. If it’s just ‘your feelings’ then i have no time for you.

Decent people don’t hate Trump for no reason at all (hate for no reason is what you right wing nut jobs do). Decent people despise bigots and criminals, and the criminals should be tried for their crimes and sentenced accordingly if found guilty.

Trump is a bigot and a criminal. I know you believe, sincerely, that it is impossible for a Republican to also be a criminal, but the reality is different, and, in fact, “Republican” and “criminal” are damn near synonyms these days.

QAnon Influencer Sues Newspaper, Gets Exposed as Alleged Child Predator

Phil Godlewski’s lawsuit against a Pennsylvania paper wound up revealing how he groomed a 15-year-old for sex, The Daily Beast reports

QANON LEADER PHIL Godlewski accidentally outed himself as an alleged child predator after filing a defamation lawsuit against a local paper that exposed old court records to public scrutiny, according to a report from The Daily Beast. Despite Godlewski and QAnon’s obsessive fixation with pedophile cabals running the government, it seems in this case the call is coming from inside the house.

In 2010, Godlewski was charged as a result of his relationship with a 15-year-old girl, identified in records as “B.D.” According to police records and testimony from the victim, Godlewski began a sexual relationship with the girl in 2008, when Godlewski was 25 and working as a high school basketball coach near Scranton, Pennsylvania. B.D. reportedly stopped cooperating with law enforcement after Godlewski threatened suicide, and Godlewski ultimately pleaded guilty to charges of “corruption of a minor,” and served three months of house arrest.

By 2021, Godlewski had established himself as a major figure within the QAnon world, and was raking in cash hawking multi-level marketing schemes to his hundreds of thousands of followers. Godlewski reportedly purchased a $1.7 mansion using the funds this year.

I guess the catch here is defining lawful protestors. How many people in a group of protestors have to cross the line into unlawful behavior before the police can use those things to disperse the whole group? And while the city settled, I am willing to bet most of the cops who were there still think they were breaking up unlawful protests.

I’m taking it to mean that there are/can be penalties if a cop is found to be in violation of any of those guidelines after the fact, since there’s nothing stopping a cop from actually arresting a protestor or using a flashbang/foam-tipped bullets at the scene except other cops.

re: #161 Sherlock Hound

Must-read if you’re disabled and on social networks. This is why I won’t join Post.

This (from that article)…

Disabled people need social media platforms that expose politicians, government officials, management in business and non-profit sectors, academics, policymakers, and journalists to disability culture and priorities. Disabled people also want platforms that amplify their individual work beyond the disability community, and effectively boost their creative, business, and career opportunities.

…is not something that any social media system offers, it’s a result of a good social media system that people want to use, which in turn brings in those people mentioned above. And Twitter didn’t become that over night or over months…It took years and years and it took people making Twitter THE preferred system which in turn brought in the journos, politicians, and so on.

I mention this because if this is a Must Have, there will never be a Twitter replacement, at least for the next several years.

I saw a Twitter thread that lined up with my understanding of the process from back when I worked in Apple App development. The gist of it:

Apple probably sent Twitter a notification that an update to their app was rejected. This has probably happened hundreds of times; Twitter has probably been in violation of these policies for a while, but previously, both Apple and Twitter had contacts to work out these violations and get the app manually approved. But Elon probably sacked the person at Twitter who was responsible for this process, so the notification went nowhere. It does have an auto-escalation process, so Elon probably eventually got wind of it, and that’s when he went on the warpath.

Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous protozoan parasite that can infect any warm-blooded species. In lab studies, infection with T. gondii has been shown to increase dopamine and testosterone levels along with risk-taking behaviors in hosts including rodents, chimps, and hyenas. Oh, and humans.

But its effects have not really been studied in the wild, so some researchers decided to assess how infection impacts gray wolves in Yellowstone National Park. They found that “the odds that a seropositive [infected] wolf becomes a pack leader is more than 46 times higher than a seronegative wolf becoming a pack leader.”

The concept of “legal entities” goes over some people’s heads, but it’s pretty straightforward when viewed in this context. In order to do business in Europe, Twitter has to have some way of complying with European law. That is by means of a legal entity, without which Twitter is not allowed to operate in Europe.

Huh.

You know, where I come from there is this thing called “Due diligence”. This is what someone does before buying a property they want to turn into a subdivision, because it might once have been a landfill that accepted waste from chemical and oil refineries. You know, that whole Love Canal thing that resulted in CERCLA and the Superfund Acts.

Surely, the Genius Elon Musk’s crack legal team were told to check out the EU’s rules and regs before the The Boss opened his Cakehole and offered to buy Twitter for $44 b-b-b-billion, right?

Right? Surely.

Dear Ted Cruz:

Decent people don’t hate Trump for no reason at all (hate for no reason is what you right wing nut jobs do). Decent people despise bigots and criminals, and the criminals should be tried for their crimes and sentenced accordingly if found guilty.

Trump is a bigot and a criminal. I know you believe, sincerely, that it is impossible for a Republican to also be a criminal, but the reality is different, and, in fact, “Republican” and “criminal” are damn near synonyms these days.

With high hopes that this note finds you in the process of slowly and painfully disappearing up your own rectum,

Sincerely,

a target of your hatred.

PS: Decent people don’t hate you for no reason at all either.

In extremely local news, the plumber just left after extracting $280 from us for repairs. $130 of that is the charge to come all the way the hell out here.

My brother just had a water heater break, which required a new tank to be installed. The tank was under warranty and thus the tank cost was $0. The labor for installation and a few fitting parts were not covered by the warranty and came to about $900.

I saw our very own @jaunte retweet this, and just had to post it here. A big legal victory here in Minnesota, as the George Floyd protesters prevail in their civil suit against the Minneapolis Police Department for their heavy-handed tactics in the summer of 2020. Part of their punishment:

Watch the rules of what constitutes a “lawful protest” change rapidly.

The loss of content and community when Musk ratfucked twitter is being mourned by a lot of content creators and their communities.

I have not had much chance yet to look at other social media platforms, but I do see noticeably less posting by useful content creators on twitter. From what I can see, many creators are retreating to their own websites or things like substack. I do wonder if some billionaire will try and grab that material as well.

Definitely a tragedy of the commons.

As I said downstairs, if this holds, it is very bad. This case disenfranchises their voters. But if it worked, the next time the strategy would be used to disenfranchise “those people”. They don’t want Democrats to have a chance to win in a purple (or red state) and they will engage in any dishonest ploy to stop these votes from being included, as Trump repeatedly tried to do in the 2020 election.

The democrats are suing so republican voters are not being disenfranchised. Hobbs is leading that lawsuit.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it enough to simply submit something as a part of the record?

They can, but how many people actually read the Congressional Record?

On of the big whinges the GOP has over the January 6 committee is it’s being broadcast publicly. They know if the committee did its work and simply published it in the Record, no one would read it.

Why would this “work”?
Maybe I’m missing something here, but AFAIK, the Cochise County vote totals - the ones these idiots seem so hellbent reluctant to certify - would give the victory (and the House seat) to the Republican. I can sorta understand these fascists trying to disenfranchise opposition votes, but it seems a Special Kind Of Stupid to blank votes for your own side….

re: #289 Jay C

and the other point not mentioned, is that is the federal offices and state offices are affected (and they are) think about all of the down the ballot items, including the state propositions and each and every local election, from county supervisors to local town mayors and selectmen, county constables and law enforcement.

and I would be hard pressed to believe that any judge, state or federal would allow them to pull this kabuki and condone all of the potential reverberations, especially when their “arguments” are so well grounded in legal niceties, like “feelings”.

The other consideration is that these aren’t rational people and they’ve had plenty of time to call into question how the process and validation are done and if anything, it’s been improved since 2020 when Hobbs took over as Sec of State and she won a close race because the previous GOP office holder fucked up so egregiously, that she was denied re-election.

while these asshats are dangerous people, they are NOT serious people in that they have about as much understanding of civics as they do quantum theory.

How we go about disabusing them of continued asshattery is an interesting concept, short of exposing them as being incredulously misguided and shaming them as being unworthy of holding a public office.

Is that a precedent we want? Imagine if the people in charge of certifying Harris Co or Fulton Co become a GQP majority and decide to pull this sort of stunt on purpose to overturn a Democrat winning?
