I just realized that, sadly, instead of the way he was portrayed in Seve7eves, Elon Musk would go to retrieve the comet and then hurtle the chunk of ice at the earth to teach people a lesson about who is really dangerous.

Someone at Fark suggested that Elon had the Flowers for Algernon surgery done on himself years ago, and we’re getting to the end of the story now. It’s as reasonable explanation as any for the existence of a cringelord billionaire.

If I were a GOP political consultant, my winning plan for a debate like this would be to have a “candidate” who made no actual public appearances. Kentucky school district cancels classes less than two weeks into year due to Covid, flu and strep outbreaks

The Lee County School District saw attendance drop to 81% just nine days after the first day of school.

Less than two weeks into the school year, a Kentucky school district has canceled in-person classes for the rest of week after nearly a fifth of the students came down with illnesses including Covid, strep throat and the flu.

The Lee County School district, which has just under 900 students, began classes on Aug. 9 but noticed attendance drop to about 82% on Friday, according to Superintendent Earl Ray Schuler.

By Monday, that rate dipped to 81% and 14 staff members called in sick, Schuler said.

The district canceled classes Tuesday and Wednesday and will shift to remote learning on Thursday and Friday. Extracurricular activities, including sports practices and games, have been canceled through the week to allow for a deep clean of the school, Schuler said.

“We’re sanitizing our buses and our buildings and giving our staff and our students time to heal,” he said.

…until Rand Paul demands they reopen…

Remembering The Board Game Promoting “Soviet America’

In the 1930s, Monopoly was all the rage—presumably because players could imagine being rich and powerful. But there was another contemporary game called Toward Soviet America, where the players’ goal is to get rid of the rich and powerful, end oppression, and seize the means of production.

One board game from the early 1930s was Monopoly’s diametrical opposite. Instead of celebrating capitalism, it aimed to destroy it. The players’ goal is to get rid of the rich and powerful, end oppression, and seize the means of production. Ultimately, their actions will turn the USA into the USSA—the United Soviet States of America.

The game was called Toward Soviet America. As you may have guessed by its absence from your family room, it never caught on. When we take a closer look at the board, the book that inspired it, and the author of that book, we get a glimpse of a now obscure chapter in America’s sociopolitical history—one in which the Communist Party of the USA (CPUSA for short) saw the proletarian revolution in America as imminent and itself as the inevitable vanguard of the toiling masses.

A Trump supporter indicted last week in Fulton County, Ga., for allegedly harassing an election worker was charged earlier this year with attacking an FBI agent working on the Justice Department’s parallel investigation of efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

The arrest of Harrison William Prescott Floyd III, which has not been previously reported, offers new information about the breadth of the federal probe led by special counsel Jack Smith, who has charged former president Donald Trump for allegedly attempting to obstruct Joe Biden’s election victory.

It could also complicate any bail agreement for Floyd in Fulton County, where District Attorney Fani T. Willis (D) has said he and the 18 others indicted on state-level charges last week — a group that includes Trump — must surrender by Friday or risk being arrested.

Floyd, 39, also known as Willie Lewis Floyd III, is a little-known player who helped run Trump’s 2020 campaign outreach to Black voters. An online member profile and Q-and-A posted by the University Club of Washington in November 2021 describes him as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran whose assignments included roles as a machine gunner, combat marksmanship trainer and martial arts instructor.

He has not responded to phone and email requests for comment. Carlos J.R. Salvado, the attorney representing Floyd in Maryland on charges of assaulting a federal officer, declined to comment.

Traditional cable TV is dying. Slowly, for sure, but each year the numbers do not lie.

CNN usually does not get a lot of views unless there is a real crisis.

WBD took on too much debt in their merger. So they have to get more eyes on their networks. Right wing nutjobs love their TV and talk radio, so yes, WBD is going to try for that audience.

It’s all part of the ongoing enemy action by the US political media — this particular example is that of framing Republicans as the only possible source of truth about Trump’s crimes etc. Because criticism of Trump coming from a liberal would be just partisan noise.

As the only possible source of truth acceptable to Republicans.

I fully expect Trump to win the early races, but the powers that be will find a legal way to remove him at the convention.

Yes, this will split the GOP.

So the powers ($$$) will push Haley and team her with someone else (a white guy).

For us, the best thing that can happen is a Trump/Ramaswamy third party entry on the ticket.

In some states like California, the American Independent party will gladly nominate Trump to get him on the ballot.

I’m not so sure…. Trump wants to be the center of attention 24/7 and Nikki has this habit of being seen and sometimes speaking the truth inadvertently.

Based on Trump’s past choice, I would suggest Burgum. He’s got zero power base, no passionate principles, doesn’t stand out and likely would simply follow orders, no matter what they are. This allows Trump to bask in all of the attention. He doesn’t calculate political crap like balancing the ticket. He doesn’t need Pence, the evangelicals believe he’s the Chosen One already.

There’s one way that Haley could get the nod, it’s because Trump is such a complete reprobate that he sees her as disposable and a target for additional cruelty.

That actually came up in a discussion with my sister earlier this evening, that a shitload of Western “traditions” started during the Victorian Era. She and Albert are also responsible for the modern idea that Christmas trees be decorated, as they not only sent out dozens to state homes and Army barracks, but had a photo taken of their family decorating one to promote the idea to the British public.

I don’t disagree, but at the speed that the courts work, I want to see it happen first.

If Trump is put in jail for breaking the bail agreement, even that could count for the GOP management to say Trump is not qualified to be nominated.

That is a stricter rule than one that will require Trump to be convicted.

It seems obvious that Trump can no longer help the GOP, he can only hurt it.

And the very rich may not like that.

The very rich can live with four more years of Biden. The very rich have done quite well under Biden. Only the ideologues keep throwing money at the GOP, and the ideologues are not enough to overcome the reality of Trump’s albatross qualities.

If we look at the RCP poll averages:

GOP Presidential candidates RCP polls

… Trump’s numbers go up with his count of indictments.

And DeSantis’ numbers keep going down.

After tonight’s performance I wonder how the race will change, but DeSantis didn’t sound very strong tonight.

Trump will win the nomination unless the powers behind the GOP stop him.

Or he does get convicted and his position on a ballot is challenged in a court and it is ruled that Trump has indeed disqualified himself.

If I were one of the funders of the GOP, I’d simply take the 2024 loss and position younger people (Haley) to run in 2028.

So those who declare they are “Republican” in polls, and thus get counted in the canvases that get included in that RCP chart, are part of a shrinking share of the entire polity.

If we look at the RCP poll averages:

[Embedded content]

… Trump’s numbers go up with his count of indictments.

And DeSantis’ numbers keep going down.

After tonight’s performance I wonder how the race will change, but DeSantis didn’t sound very strong tonight.

Trump will win the nomination unless the powers behind the GOP stop him.

Or he does get convicted and his position on a ballot is challenged in a court and it is ruled that Trump has indeed disqualified himself.

If I were one of the funders of the GOP, I’d simply take the 2024 loss and position younger people (Haley) to run in 2028.

I haven’t even looked at a gag reel of tonight’s shitshow, but everything I’m hearing in passing says that Meatball Ron has hit the “Please Clap” portion of his fall from grace. His whole sales pitch was supposed to be that he was the Trump Lite of the 2024 field, all the hate and bile with half the baggage. Problem is that the party’s voters want Trump Classic and won’t settle for a diet version.

It seems Trump cannot be stopped.

The one state in which he may lose is Florida, but that primary comes too late to save DeSantis.

DeSantis’ performance tonight was “mid”. DeSantis is definitely mid.

I do not beleive they will. Section 5 of the 14th Amendmenrt states “The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.”

This Court, I am sorry ti say, would likely state that Section 5 means ONLY Congress can enforce Secrtion 3. No state can. Congress must make legislation to enforce Section 3. Since it has not, then Trump is safe.

Don’t like this but this is less arcane than some of their recent decisions.

He senses, though, that there is an opportunity. Trump has already shown that.

I see the GOP as the victim of its own success in seeking dark money, Mitch McConnell’s singular obsession for the last four decades. The GOP made a deal with the capitalist class that in return for its financial support, the party would deliver massive tax cuts and less regulation, and that bargain has been a spectacular success. The problem is that, as always, the capitalists are looking for future gains for their investment. The pressing need to deliver even more return for its dark money donors leaves the GOP with literally nothing it can offer of substance to 99% of voters, which is a helluva problem when you need the votes of nearly half of them. So that only leaves culture wars, lavishly subsidized by the capitalist class through hate radio, Fox News and an entire astroturfed rightwing establishment to counter mainstream establishments, which could mine the rich vein of white nationalism our nation was founded on. As the white demographic ages and shrinks relative to the nation as a whole, this appeal has become ever more hysterical and explicitly racist even as the share of the voting age population which finds it repulsive becomes a majority. Faced with a future in which the party appeals only to an ever shrinking minority, the GOP has had no choice except to become increasingly anti-democratic and authoritarian, to the point that it is embracing fascism and rejecting the very concept of a multiracial democracy, a goal the nation set for itself in the aftermath of the Civil War, then shelved for nearly a century before the civil rights movement achieved landmark civil and voting rights legislation in the 1960s. As the GOP’s efforts at voter suppression and gerrymandering fall short of its need to maintain control of the government, the GOP will soon have to decide if it’s going to make another attempt to seize and maintain power by force, or turn away from its corrupt bargain and move back towards the political center to remain electorally relevant in a multiracial democracy. Sorry for the length of this post, but like I said this subject is going to spawn a lot of PhD dissertations in the decades to come.

IMO the story of the GOP’s degradation is much too simple to be dissertation-worthy. A political party having no substantive ideas after the Great Depression eventually latched onto the Southern Strategy. The rest is literally history.

The tropics are becoming more concerning for the United States.

Wind Speed Probability for Tropical Storm Franklin

Tropical Storm Franklin is moving north, away from the Dominican Republic. All warnings have been dropped for that country and the Turks & Caicos in The Bahamas.

The storm’s prognostication hasn’t changed from the last run, except the wind speeds at the end are expected to be higher, and the National Hurricane Center has nudged the track of Tropical Storm Franklin to the left (toward the United States).

Franklin is being steered by a complex variety of factors: The strengthening remnants of Tropical Storm Emily to its east, the heat dome over the eastern United States, and a high pressure cell to its north.

As Emily lifts to the north, the high pressure cell is expected to dive down behind Franklin, forcing the storm to move north-west. As the wind prediction chart shows and more hurricane models are coming into agreement, that makes the storm a potential threat to everything from North Carolina to Nova Scotia. Everyone on the Eastern Seaboard should be watching Franklin’s movement. Model runs seem to indicate a path more toward New England and Atlantic Canada over North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states.

By the end of the period, Franklin is expected to be a strengthening Category 2 hurricane (110 mph).

Tropical Storm Franklin Forecast Track

Disturbance One (the Remnants of Emily) are given a 70% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within two days. Emily is in the central Atlantic moving north.

Disturbance Two is well-west of the Cabo Verde Islands and has a 40% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone as it moves north-west.

Disturbance Three has formed off the coast of El Salvador in the Eastern Pacific. The National Hurricane Center predicts the system will move over El Salvador and Honduras and emerge moving north into the Gulf of Mexico. Once there, they give it a 40% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone as it moves over very warm water in the direction of Louisiana to Florida.

Atlantic 7-Day Graphical Tropical Outlook (NHC)

In the Eastern Pacific, Disturbance One has formed off the south coast of Mexico. This system is given an 80% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone as it follows the general path of the late Hurricane Hilary.

Disturbance Two is well out-to-sea, moving WNW. The NHC gives this system a 60% chance of becoming a tropical depression.

Eastern North Pacific 7-Day Graphical Tropical Outlook (NHC)

In the Central Pacific, Disturbance Two from the east is expected to come into it’s area at the end of the seven-day forecast period, moving in the general direction of Hawai’i. That storm will still be a long way away from that state at the time.

These days mugshots are made with digital cameras. The information is stored as metadata for the photograph. If a name is required to be shown, it can be superimposed on the photograph.

News media outlets are aware of this, so they can identify a suspect in a news article.

Essentially, the placard is obsolete except in small jurisdictions which might not have the relevant equipment.

The 14th Amendment has never been tested in court, but as you point out, many scholars believe a plain reading of the text does not require conviction for the person being disqualified. All that has to be shown is:

1) An insurrection happened (check);
2) The individual under consideration for disqualification participated.

Besides this interpretation battle over whether conviction is required for disqualification, the second point is going to be hotly debated. His being indicted by the grand jury in DC lends a lot of weight to the “he participated” side of things, but it is by no means certain that it can be proven to a court’s satisfaction that he participated enough in the seditious acts to be disqualified as a candidate for office. For the most part, on the day itself, it was his inaction, more than anything, that marked his participation in the coup attempt.

This bunch of seditious treasonweasels are in the FO part of FA. All of their motions to remove to federal court are getting thrown out by the federal courts, on multiple grounds, including failure to state any relevant caselaw, facts, or evidence that requires removal to federal court.

Clark’s motion was denied.
Meadows’ motion was denied.

It’s a sign of things to come. They’re going to find that they don’t have any defense, and that their best chance of avoiding a lengthy stay in prison is to cooperate. But at this point, DA Willis has the goods on Trump without anyone cooperating. Even Smith’s case doesn’t need cooperation from these fuckers.

Which is why I think conviction is needed. The current USSC will not disqualify Trump unless they have to, and I suspect that 5 of the justices will not be pressured unless Trump is convicted.

And even then the USSC may simply decide that the 14th Amendment puts the onus on Congress to make that decision via law.

I disagree. Alito’s Calvinball Court is focused primarily on two things:

1) Creating the right for white Christians to do as they please, at the expense of everyone else;
2) Ensuring the perpetual supremacy of the judicial branch by neutering the executive and legislative branches. (Dismantling the administrative state)

They have shown zero willingness to carry water for the former President in his efforts to seize power. I’m not ruling anything out; it is the Calvinball Court, after all. But out of all the judges the former guy appointed, Barrett and Kavanaugh, specifically, have been the most reticent to go to bat for him personally.

Exactly. They are not participants in his power grab; they’re on a power grab of their own. In fact, it might be argued that helping him might jeopardize their goal, because it would draw the ire of the majority of the country, and undue attention from the Department of Justice.

Trump’s gone ahead and replaced his lead counsel in Georgia. His new lawyer is apparently a good one, but his line about how Trump should never have been indicted is going to run full tilt into facts and reality, when all the evidence shows Trump knowingly engaged in a criminal conspiracy to invalidate the results, interfere in the election certification process, and should be on alert that his client will not pay.

The 14th Amendment has never been tested in court, but as you point out, many scholars believe a plain reading of the text does not require conviction for the person being disqualified. All that has to be shown is:

1) An insurrection happened (check);

I would respectfully disagree. It was his incitement of the mob he deliberately assembled and then directed at the Capitol once he had inflamed them, that more than anything marked his participation in the coup attempt, after which he had Rudy attempting to delay the certification further with the time the assault bought him.

I would agree with you, but that’s what the legal fight would be about, if the interpretation is established that a conviction is not necessary to disqualify. That’s where his being indicted for conspiracy to do a coup matters. With those charges on the books, it becomes a lot easier to make the case that he actively participated in a way that gained the notice of the DOJ.

It has been tested in court, in the case of the Otoe County, New Mexico county commissioner Couy Griffin (Cowboys for Trump guy) who participated in the insurrection. State courts there ordered him immediately removed from the county commission and barred him from running for reëlection.

Although the wording of section three says Congress shall implement by appropriate legislation, “Congress” has always been interpreted as “any level of government.” On top of that, other than the bare requirements set out to run for office in the Constitution, states set eligibility requirements.

It would certainly be a shyteshow if a state disqualified Trump, but unless the Supreme Court wants to rule the federal government can take voting law away from the states (I don’t see that happening because that would take away power from state GOP legislatures), states can choose to allow him or ban him under their laws.

Under New Mexico law, any private citizen of the state may file a lawsuit to remove a disqualified county official from office. A group of New Mexico residents were represented in this case by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the New Mexico-based law firms of Freedman Boyd Hollander and Goldberg P.A, Dodd Law Office, LLC, and the Law Office of Amber Fayerberg, LLC, as well as by Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC.

The New York Times is at it again, uncritically publishing a discredited source.

NYT Treats Key Source’s Many Lies as an Aside in Latest Anti-Trans Smear (Assigned Media, August 23, 2023)

In the New York Times this morning, August 23, 2023, reporter Azeen Ghorayshi writes credulously about the wild, unproven allegations surrounding a St. Louis clinic that specializes in treating gender dysphoric youth. These are the allegations of Jamie Reed, a former clinic employee who has become an activist opposing all medical treatment for gender dysphoria in children (with some statements suggesting she even opposes treatments for adults).

Ghorayshi manages the seemingly impossible, combining examples of her main source’s repeated lies and no evidence of wrongdoing on the part clinic into an article structured to heavily imply Reed’s concerns were genuine, and warranted, in spite of the Times’ own reporting on the case. An early paragraph, which hints at corroboration for some of Reed’s allegations the article never produces, sets this bizarre tone:

the argument seems to be:

Overall, it seems to us to be quite clear that the specific series of events leading up to and culminating in the January 6, 2021 attack qualifies as an insurrection within the meaning of Section Three: “concerted, forcible resistance to the authority of government to execute the laws in at least some significant respect.” The large group of people who descended upon, entered, and occupied the U.S. Capitol building used force to prevent a key step in the constitutional transfer of power. The group was in part coordinated, not merely a riot.

Well, it did, because they had a chance to buy tickets 10 days ago and to do an orderly booking, but instead have to get last minute seats, which cost far more.

Then again, they could get a private jet to fly them, like Rudy did (who was also crying poverty at the same exact fucking time).

BTW, I get it that you can get a private jet flight for about $8-10k from NYC to ATL. That’s still a chunk of change Rudy claims not to have.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Harold are moving into my area. Heavy rain and lots of thunderstorms on tap.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Cheyenne WY
518 AM MDT Thu Aug 24 2023

.SHORT TERM…(Today through Friday night)
Issued at 355 AM MDT Thu Aug 24 2023

Main forecast concerns with the short term period focus on
increasing moisture over the area with chances for numerous
showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, and especially Friday
with heavy rainfall possible.

Latest GOES WV imagery shows the remnants of Harold over northern NM
moving north around the western edge of the upper level high
centered over the southern plains. This disturbance will approach
south-central WY leading to showers and thunderstorms initially
developing in the higher terrain over Carbon and Albany Co this
afternoon. Coverage will become more numerous headed into this
evening with better upper level support as PW climb 2 sigma above
the normal for late August around 1”. Main hazards with storms will
be heavy rainfall as CAMs have indicated lingering showers could
continue overnight.

The Washington Post is still trying to sell their readers on the idea there is a “normal” Republican.

7 ways MAGA Republicans differ from other Republicans (Aaron Blake, August 22, 2023)

He starts by fudging some data on a poll question “Did Pence do the right thing?” More MAGAs said no than “regular” Republicans, but the so-called regular ones only 48% say he did the right thing and 15% say he didn’t (the remainder didn’t have an opinion or didn’t know).

He also tries to unskew statistics showing just how many GOP supporters are MAGA Republicans.

To start with, polls generally show that 4 to 5 in 10 Republican-leaning voters identify as MAGA. A Grinnell College poll late last year pegged the number at 42 percent. And the Monmouth poll last month showed that 31 percent identify as “strong” MAGA supporters, 21 percent identify as “somewhat” MAGA supporters, and 38 percent don’t support MAGA.

1) Creating the right for white Christians to do as they please, at the expense of everyone else;

And if the Federalist Society is willing to sit back and play a long game for a while then letting the 14th Amendment stuff push Trump off the ballot might be the way to go.

a. It puts the 14th Amendment disqualification argument into the quiver in case they ever want to push a state SoS or later Congressional majority into pushing a (Democratic) candidate they don’t like or fear off of a ballot or two in ensure an electoral victory.

b. Trump off the ballot will roil up the base. And then they spread the word for the base to turn out, vote GOP ticket, and then write in Trump’s name for President. GOP gets the votes for the down ticket elections and “oh, so sorry Trump lost (again)” for the Presidential race is something they accept. Especially if they get control of the Senate and/or keep control of the House since that will handcuff Biden effectively from doing much of anything.

Republicans are entirely lawless now. Any Republican that cared about anything of value was called a RINO and driven out by lunatics. It’s a criminal lunatic party now.

Ron DeSantis’s next step on the road to permanent minority rule in Florida is to change the size of the circuit courts (there are currently twenty) by “consolidating them.” (That means add rural red counties to bluer-leaning circuits.)

The goal of that is to make it harder to elect more liberal judges. The Florida Supreme Court was asked to create a commission to “study demographic changes.” Since the court is captured by the Federalist Society, they’re more than happy to help out the gerrymandered state legislature.

re: Meadows and Jeff “Insurrection Act” Clark trying to remove their cases to federal court, from electoral-vote.com:

Meadows and Clark are attempting to move their case to federal court because they want to raise immunity challenges, claiming “these were official actions as part of my job duties.” Public employees receive various degrees of immunity from criminal and civil charges for actions taken in official capacity. I teach about this very topic in my Administrative Law and Public Sector HR courses. If they were to successfully move the case, it could potentially narrow the actions the prosecutors could use as evidence of furtherance of the conspiracy. That said, their appeals are likely to fail because actions that violate laws typically fall outside the scope of one’s job duties. None of the actions/accusations outlined in the indictment are common job duties of a White House Chief of Staff or environmental attorney for DOJ.

As far as getting a more favorable jury, that’s probably a motivation, but I don’t see it as an equally good one. Fulton County, while certainly Democratic, does have plenty of rural Trumpy areas. Moving it to the Northern Federal District for Georgia would likely net a few more favorable jurors, but the defense should be able to find at least a handful of Republican jurors in Fulton County. It’s certainly not as bad as Washington, DC, for Trump and his conspirators.

The Bolded part is exactly what I think the USSC will do. Section 5 says Congress shall enforce the amendment with legislation. It would be a very easy point for the conservative Supremes to say ONLY Congress can regulate this point.

It’s already been tested in a state court, and a county commissioner was removed from his office and banned from running again.

For the Supreme Court to remove the power of states to set election laws means they would be consolidated in the federal government. That might be controlled by Democrats some day.

On top of that, if states can’t control their own election laws, Republicans can’t keep gerrymandering and suppressing themselves into minority rule governance.

Additionally, “Congress” has always been interpreted to mean any level of governance (which is why states or cities can’t write laws abrogating your V Amendment rights for example).

re: #332 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

My bold. While I completely agree with you and recognize that precedent should give the states control, the conservatives of the Supreme Court play Calvinball with precedent, as we know. They may simply say Congress means Congress.

So I think it is very likely the conservatives will invalidate any state level exercise of the 14th amendment unless Congress gives them that ability. Hope I am wrong

I’ve had a lot of people tell me front derailleurs are too difficult to make operational. I think riders are trying to treat them like rear derailleurs, which have become very forgiving of operator lack of finesse. When the big one in back looks like a pie plate, the rear derailleur gets weird.

I think some of it is also just the geometry of newer bikes with the much wider rear frame spacing. The chain angle gets too extreme, for instance the small to small combination (always a bad idea) is totally locked out by the electronic shifting system on my road bike, so even though it’s a 2x12 it really only has 23 gear combinations.

What a terrible idea. I’m glad that it didn’t work out.

General Motors developed the Titan in response to the need for more efficient haul trucks by open pit mine operators. GM believed that a general decrease in mineral ore quality combined with a projected need to mine tar shale and tar sands would increase the quantity of ore hauled by surface mine operators’ trucks, worldwide.[1] The Titan was the largest in the Terex 33 series of off-road haul trucks, which also included the 33-03, 33-05, 33-07, 33-09, 33-11 and the 33-15. The 33-19 and the 33-15 both used diesel/AC electric powertrains, while the other, smaller members of the 33 series of haul trucks used mechanical powertrains.

The Titan was assembled at the General Motors Diesel Division’s assembly plant in London, Ontario, Canada, in 1973.[2][3] The Titan was first shown to the public in October 1974 at the American Mining Congress in Las Vegas, NV.[4]

GM predicted that when the Titan entered regular production, it would cost approximately US$1.5 million in 1976 (or $8 million today).[5][6] However, the Titan never entered regular production. The worldwide coal market softened in the late 1970s, causing coal mines to decrease production and economize by rebuilding existing equipment or purchasing smaller haul trucks with proven operational records. The projected market for the 33-19 “Titan” never materialized and the prototype was the only unit ever assembled.[2]

I used to say 3x8 was best, because the chains hadn’t gone narrow yet, but a guy from Shimano told me their 10 spd. chain was the most durable (this was when 11 was the latest and greatest). Now, when I’m shopping for used bikes, nine in the back is what I hope for. Partly for the prevalence of compatible components. Three in the front is mandatory.

Nine is a good sweet spot because its the same rear frame spacing as 8 speed so there’s less chance of rubbing your heels on the chain stays. I’m about to send my old 1998 Ibis Spanky to be repaired, I crashed it a long time ago and want to rebuild as a nostalgia project. Drivetrain is a 2x9 Campy group. I had to wait eleven months for a new WoundUp fork to arrive, was supposed to take four months max when I ordered it. Whole thing feels a bit stupid but I can’t help myself.

We’re too soft on political crime. Republicans aren’t afraid to tie themselves to a hardcore criminal, but they should be.

Goes back to Nixon and Ford’s pardon.

Goes back to DOJ memo.

This ties in with a story here in Czech media.

The story here is that the flight attendant on this ill-fated flight, Kristina Raspopová, complained to family members about the delay of the flight “due to unplanned maintenance or repair”; Apparently, there was a one-hour departure delay while some kind of “work” was being done by ground crews to the plane.

Wagner put the entire top of their organization on a plane and didn’t inspect it? That’s doubly stupid. They knew that they were a problem for Putin. It is better than death by polonium. I did not know until today that all the commercially produced polonium in the world is made in Russia.

Heard on NPR:

Prigozhin died when his plane went down.

Out of context, but the passivity there was not justified by context.

Lights, camera, Carpenter! If you’re a fan of horror—heck, if you’re a fan of cinema in general—you can’t help but bow down at the altar of John Carpenter. This legendary filmmaker is to horror what Spielberg is to adventure or what Scorsese is to crime dramas. We’re talking about the man behind enduring classics like Halloween, The Thing, and Escape from New York, films that didn’t just set the bar but ripped it out of the ground and swung it around like a madman. Two of his lesser talked-about classics are returning to theaters this spooky season, and I am thrilled for a new generation to get the opportunity to experience these must-see horror movies.

The Fog filmmaker has a unique gift for blending real-world issues with pure horror. He transforms everyday items into terrifying subjects, tapping into our deepest fears. Now a new generation that may only know the self-deprecating chain smoking filmmaker through pop culture references can experience his genius first-hand. Fathom Events is bringing back They Live and Christine for special anniversary screenings this September.

Mark Elias:

“…The one common theme in each of Trump’s indictments is the central role that lawyers play in facilitating, excusing or covering up his malfeasance. They are his enablers, co-conspirators and now co-defendants.

Something has gone tragically wrong in the GOP and in the legal profession. At this pace, CPAC will need to hold its next convention in a prison yard. The Federalist Society may soon have to create a category of membership for the disbarred and criminally convicted.”

“State bar associations need to review how existing rules failed to stop so many lawyers from saying and doing so many things to undermine our democracy. Rules need to make clear that undermining democracy, inside or outside of the courtroom, is prohibited. The federal rules of procedure must be revised to provide for swift, mandatory sanctions against lawyers who bring frivolous election-related claims.”
